Ear Stapling for Weight Loss?

I thought I had heard of every single weight loss gimmick there is - but I was wrong. Ear stapling for weight loss involves inserting a staple in the ear (apparently a stomach acupuncture point).

In September, Robin Gibson, RN rented a booth at the state fair where lines of ladies waited their turn for the latest weight loss rage.

“It's cool, hey, I like this," said one person who got the staple.

“Dieting just doesn't work, so I'm hoping that this helps," said another. via KFOR.com

The practice has led to back-alley operators illegally? stapling willing suspects. One poor person shares their story:

"When I pushed on it, stuff would come out the holes. It came out of the top hole and the bottom hole where the staple was. It was real hard for me to open my mouth; it was hard for me to chew and stuff like that. It was just unbearable; I couldn't sleep on it or anything."
Perhaps there is the weight loss secret - it's hard to overeat when you can't open your mouth properly!

UPDATE (Apr 2006):
The Mississippi Medical Board has ordered a number of weight loss businesses to stop offering the staple procedure. Many states require a license to practice acupuncture.

It is interesting that so many people who know nothing about acupuncture have such strong opinions about how it could "never" work. Auriculotherapy (in some forms)has been used for hundreds, maybe even thousands, of years just as Acupuncture has. It works on many conditions but please realize that Eastern medicine works on the energy in the body whether Acupuncture or Herbal remedies are used it is energy they are trying to affect and the result is different depending on what your body is trying to heal itself of. Whether I use needles, electro therapy without needles, ear seed pellets, ear tacks with tape, tiny needles with surgical body glue or a surgical staple that can stay in your ear for months it is just different ways to attack the same problem. In the years I've done Acupuncture I've treated around 1000 people with this technique along with nutritional recomendations and the strong warning that nothing will change if you don't change it - that means quit eating junk and feed your body good food, not to much of it then walk every day, work up to walking a lot (4-7 miles). Don't expect anything to magically take your weight off you have to work at it but Acupuncture for appetite suppression, headache relief, smoking cessation works! None of the patients I have treated have become infected. I agree with those skeptic of acupuncture when you see someone put staples in someones ears with no consultation or other follow up it would make me skeptical of the whole idea as well.
Live well,
Dr Charles

I am going to go have this done in two weeks. I am going to have this done in a Dr.'s office. Anyway, I am not extremely overweight, but just can't seem to lose the 20 lbs that I have put about 11 years ago. I have gotten off the couch and going to a gym and am trying to change my diet habits. I figure baby steps..lol...I am working on my diet habits slowly and if this really works, it will help me accomplish my goals. I am the type of person that has to see results to keep on going. anyway, i'll report back if this doesn't work or i get some horrible infection. I will check out that website that Randy has suggested. See ya in about a month.

I have vaguely heard about this before, but through reading this I may be "misinformed". I have been seeing an ACCUPUNCTURIST for the past month. When I went in to see her initially I explained to her that I was interested in accupuncture for Weight Loss. To date the only thing I have "lost" is $75 x 3 (USD) per session. Don't get me wrong I really like and trust my doctor. I intend to reiterate what I am saying in my letter on our next appointment. If someone can, please respond to this and advise me if I need to be seeing someone elso for "ear stapling", or is this something she can do in her office...

im only 15 years old but i am majorly over weight. ever since i can remember i've been over weight. i've been constantly teased and made fun of at school and such. i heard about the ear staple a couple of days ago in my 3rd period art class. at first i thought that it was a bunch of bologna. and that my classmate was full of it. i went home and asked my mom if she had heard of such a thing as staping your ear to loose weight. later that night my mom saw an add in the paper for a place in town that does such a procedure. i did some research online and have found that it works for the most part. i have found very few cases where it didnt. and all of those say they had it done by someone who wasnt a doctor, nurse...etc. what would you expect? i plan on going to have my ears stapled on saturday. i also plan to go on a diet (altough not that extreme) and i have started planning an exercise routine.
i hope my results are as good as the ones i've read about online.

I just got both my ears stapled yesterday, along with a co-worker of mine. Another co-worker we spoke to yesterday said she had gotten hers stapled before she got married last week. She said it really worked for her. So after we heard the good news, we went together after work. It hurt. My co-worker said that hers didn't hurt that bad. I spoke to her this morning to see if she had any affects. She said she ate breakfast this morning and felt full after eating half of her breakfast. I unfortunately have experienced nothing but slight pain and discomfort. The instructions that we recieved at the clinic said that some experience immediate results with in a matter of minutes and some a few days. So I'm not giving up yet. Now another co-worker is wanting to get hers done. So I will probably go with her Monday and give her moral support.

Well, my husband and I just got our ears stapled about 2 hours ago. One for weight loss and one for smoking. It did not hurt and I am very sensitive to pain. There was a bit of discomfort for about a second. My mouth was very dry afterwards. I did eat afterwards as it was lunchtime and did notice that although I was hungry, I wasn't quite able to eat as much as I normally would. I am also very hyper feeling, I guess it is all those endorphins......hope this works...I'll keep you informed.

I have heard of this procedure and would love to try it for losing weight and for quitting smoking. Does anyone know of an acupuncture clinic close or around Hattiesburg Mississippi?

I had the ear stapling procedure done yesterday! I was introducted to it by a friend that had it done. She lost 13lbs in 2 1/2 weeks. Her sister has the stop-smoking staples done and it's working for her. I think that unless you are seriously considering doing, you know someone that has! Don't rely on the negative comments to scare you away from doing something that could improve your life. Mine were done by a certified medical doctor. If you let just anyone doctor on you...anything can happen or NOT happen to you.

The ear stapling procedure is done around where I live. I have several friends who have done it and my mother has done it. I plan to have it done within the next couple of weeks. Everyone I know is having lots of success. Many losing 3-5 lbs. per week. I know there are many skeptics....I was one of them. I thought it was absurd. Now I see...IT WORKS. There is a small percentage of people who it doesn't work for, but why not give it a shot. The clinic that offers it here in Conway, Arkansas charges $45 for one ear, and $55 for both. The cost to remove is included in the initial fee. If it is not working for you within a couple of weeks, they will reposition it for free one time. Here's the kicker...one of my friends that had it done lost 70 lbs within 6 months! You just can't say that it doesn't work. It supressed her appetite and helped her with portion control. She also did light exercise a few times a week. I recommend that everyone try it! I know I am!

To all those skeptical:
I just got this done about a week ago. My mom talked me into it even though I was reluctant. I had been having severe migraines and wanted to lose a few pounds for summer time. So I got two different points done, one ear for hunger, and one ear for stress and migraines. It hasn't really been long enough to see if the migraines will go away-but I haven't had one since. AND in 3 days I have already lost 5 pounds! I absolutely love food, and often have the stray animal syndrome (eat everything on the plate as if I were not going to be fed again). My mind realizes it's full much sooner than before, so I never clear the plate, there is always about 1/2 of the food left. It may be the "placebo" effect, but if it is- WHO CARES! It's working!

Well I'm gonna try it. I'm 41yo, 5'10" tall and weigh 290lbs. I can't take many of the pills on the market due to high blood pressure meds, but I do go to the gym at least once a week and most weeks twice. I've always been big. 56" chest and 46" waist, but now I eat smarter and exercise. I'll let you know.

Hi,
Well I am in Australia and I am morbidly obese. I began my weightloss journey May 2005 when I tipped the scales at 205kg. I now weigh 171.4kg (about 350lbs I think). I have been doing the Weight Watchers system and it had been working until I lost motivation and plateaued for the last 4 months.

Yesterday I got an ear seed put in by my doctor who also does accupuncture on me. Yes it did give a bit of a sting, and I cant sleep on that side but I have been feeling pretty good. I have had the dry mouth like some of you have said about the staple.

The doctor wants it to stay in for about 1 and a half weeks. I guess he will then put another in. I actually have 3 ear seeds in one ear.

This may be something due to Pavlovs Dog theory, but I am willing to try.

Congrats to all of you who have lost weight using the staple.

I also had a headache last night and felt very sleepy. Normally I dont sleep much and awake until the wee hours but last night I wanted to go to bed at a more respectable hour. My hubby is impressed lol.

I will try and remember to come back next week to report my loss. Wouldnt it be wonderful to have a huge weightloss!!

I have a trusted chirpractor that suggested I try it only if I was going to work on it in addition. He told me it usually only works for 60 %, but he gave me two weeks to think about it and suggested a diet plan to follow. I've tried everything else, and we were contemplating a stomach banding. Considering how expensive and somewhat invasive that is, the staple was easier to accept. It did hurt a little...still aches now and then I just got it in yesterday, but it's not something I can't stand, and I'm sure it will go away. He said he'd never had any problems with infection, or anything like that, so I'm excited. So many people are close minded when it comes to the body helping itself. So many times we just need something to give us that extra push. I wish all of you luck and myself as well! ;)

What is the name of the place in Conway, AR. I have looked under everything I can possible look under and cannot find this place. I am getting married in a couple of months and need to lose a few pounds. I have heard a lot about this place, and really want to try it, but have not been able to find out where to go. If anyone could tell me, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Wow. You guys have given me a lot to think about. I heard of this ear staple for the first time yesterday getting my hair done. One of the stylist did it. Swears it works and many of her clients have done it and say it is working. The infection stuff sounds gross and scary. Could it be that these people aren't being as clean as they should? Any piercing can get infected if not taken care of properly. I am an RN, so with my background, I'm a little sceptical, but I'd sure love to try it.

I have been really thinking of getting my ear stapled in order to shed a few unwanted pounds and for tension problems. However, I haven't been able to find anyone in Houston, Texas that does the procedure. Does anyone know of a good place to get this done in Houston?

Thanks

pc, thank you for the info. I finally found the place in Conway and it is linked to the one in Benton. I went Sat. afternoon and had both ears stapled. It was not bad at all, but I have a high pain tolerence and also quite a few peircings and tatoos, so this was nothing to me. I think it all depends on your body. Everyone is different.
The infections that people are getting are from not caring for the staples properly. As a nurse, you know that if there is any type of puncture to the skin, in order for it to heal and not get infected, you MUST keep it clean. It should be common sense, but some people feel that when they do something like this, it should just take care of itself. WRONG! You asked for it, now take the proper care to maintain it.

The effects so far for me:
-None noticed the first day.
-The Second day: I found that I did eat less. I still felt as hungry as I did before, but when I started to eat I got full off of much, much less. I have no need to order a whole sandwich anymore or it will just be wasted. 1/2 will do the trick. Whereas before I ate a whole sandwich and a bag of chips and was still hungry. I also have noticed that I don't crave sweets. In fact I decided to try a piece of chocolate today to just see if I liked it. It was good, but it made me a little nauseous. I have not noticed a weight loss yet, but did not expect to quite this soon. I know people have said that they noticed weight loss as soon as 3 days, but I refuse to weigh myself before 10 days because I don't want to set myself up for a disappointment. Everyone loses weight at different rates. I have been exercising and will continue to do so 5 days a week. I hope that I lose wieght, but if not at least my food consumption is under control and more healthy now. My main purpose is really not to gain anymore weight before the wedding or I will not be able to fit in the dress that has already been purchased. (I am a terrible stress eater and this is probably the most stress I have been under in a long time.) However, with Jamaica as the honeymoon spot, I would love to shed a few pounds. I will let you know more in a week or so.

Amanda, Thank you for your comments. I am still undecided, but will be in Little Rock tomorrow. (I don't live in AR) I guess I'll make up my mind when I get there. I excercise too, so I'm hoping this will do the trick to just shed 15 pounds. I am also under more stress than normal and can't seem to get off the extra weight. I'll look for your progress and wish you the best.

I am thinking about getting this done along with my mom. My question is once you have it done do you have to keep getting it done? I really want to lose weight. I am in college and feel that my weight holds me back. I have a very skinny sister and can't stand it. She eats more than me but doesn't gain any weight. Also, this stapling thing curves your appetite...so it's up to me to eat healthier though right? Please let me know. I am gonna call the two places in Arkansas that ya'll have mentioned this week.

Well, I did it. What's $45? If it works great, if it doesn't, I haven't lost much (no pun intended!) It was no big deal. Only a pinch and that's all. I was in there about 15 minutes. I'll report in a week how things are going. Our dinner last night didn't even seem good to me so I just drank water instead and later had a bowl of cereal. But I don't know if I would blame that on the staple. Time will tell.

Thank you, Dan! I have been looking for the number to that one in Madison, MS. Now that I have it, I will call them tomorrow and see how soon they can work me in. I've heard far more positive remarks than negative about this procedure. My cousin is a RN and she's done some checking into it too, and can't find any cons that would remotely come close to outweighing the pros. I hope this works! I have bad high BP and diabetes, so a whole lot of the OTC and prescription stuff is off-limits to me. Thanks! I'm glad I found this site.
