Ear Stapling for Weight Loss?

I thought I had heard of every single weight loss gimmick there is - but I was wrong. Ear stapling for weight loss involves inserting a staple in the ear (apparently a stomach acupuncture point).

In September, Robin Gibson, RN rented a booth at the state fair where lines of ladies waited their turn for the latest weight loss rage.

“It's cool, hey, I like this," said one person who got the staple.

“Dieting just doesn't work, so I'm hoping that this helps," said another. via KFOR.com

The practice has led to back-alley operators illegally? stapling willing suspects. One poor person shares their story:

"When I pushed on it, stuff would come out the holes. It came out of the top hole and the bottom hole where the staple was. It was real hard for me to open my mouth; it was hard for me to chew and stuff like that. It was just unbearable; I couldn't sleep on it or anything."
Perhaps there is the weight loss secret - it's hard to overeat when you can't open your mouth properly!

UPDATE (Apr 2006):
The Mississippi Medical Board has ordered a number of weight loss businesses to stop offering the staple procedure. Many states require a license to practice acupuncture.

This has been around before. I remember my older sister falling for this scam several years ago. Got a nice infection for her money!

Unless you eat by sticking food in your ears instead of your mouth, this is not likely to work.

It may however become a fashionable body piercing statement, so you could be the first one on your block to have one, or two.

Ugh, gross. Nothing like a massive infection in your head to make you lose your appetite. I really hope no one falls for this one.

I think that all of you are fake. Someone actually made up all that and they are just mad because the "weight-loss-staple" works better than their product. Or maybe it's effecting their income. Sounds pretty right, huh? Well, that's just my opinion and we are all titled to our own. So thank you for you time.

This 'idea' is NOT new....it's like a thousand years old...it's called acupuncture!!! IF its done by a professional who knows exactly what they are doing - properly set up & has sanitary work conditions, then I can see it as a good thing. It doesn't eliminate the hunger, it helps to control it. Most of all, it makes one AWARE of the body & the signals it's sending to your brain. Use it as a tool, not a cure....only proper balanced diet & healthy exercise will "cure" it!

In reply, I am not a fake anything - inappropriate at times perhaps, but not fake. I am also not trying to get clients from posting on this blog - I just like to post here because it is fun and I like the back-links.

I do really hate to see people waste money on weight loss schemes though. There are really no shortcuts to getting and staying healthy and I think people kid themselves about this while they gain the American 5 – 10 pounds per year until they are obese and have real health issues.

The food industry and the companies that make these products should be ashamed of themselves, of course they are not – they are just making money off of those of us willing to believe their lies.

I suppose if the correct accupuncture points are activated there may be some benefit - most accupunture treatments that I am familiar with however are done by a trained clinician in an office for a period of an hour or so - and you don't walk out with the needles still stuck in your body.

I’m sorry, but if you eat the wrong things and don’t exercise you are going to get fat whether you ears are stapled or not.

The "stuff" coming out of the holes was probably pus. Accupuncture is different, since it uses sterile needles and is done by a licensed practitioner. This, however, sounds like a huge scam.

It has been around for a while, but I had certainly never heard of it before.

Hi I found this site last night and have been reading and reading, I too am in hopes of finding help to shed about 45 pounds! BUT I went through having had the ghastric bypass, so don't let any one tell you , that you willnever gain weight after having it!

I am responding to the ear thing! I do know for a fact if done proplery it will work! Thing is it is hard to find the propeery people to doit! My friends grandma had to have surgery and they told her she could not unless she lost 70 pounds first, her doctor refered her to an oriental man that did this procedure. She lost the 70 pounds plus 4 more a total of 74pounds! Had the surgery and never did regain the weight! So it does work if done correctly, it is like an art form, not every one can do it! I have called many places that do not do it and no of know where that does. This has been several years back that granny had it done, and the doctor then was nearing or past retirement, so he is unable to be found!

I have been reading about Metabo Speed XXX, I am going to guess that it is unworth getting, all in hopes that it will help! Has anyone heard of this or tried it?

Please let me know!

I would love to find a support group in this form.

I must admit, I was ear-stapling's biggest skeptic. My wife is a nurse with 2 associate degrees in science, has studied acupuncture for years and has always held a special interest for holistic medicine. This being said I usually trust her judgement when it comes to things of that nature. However, when her and her mother Dr.Hoover started providing the ear-stapling procedure through their Independent Diet Management firm, I about flipped. "You want me to do what?" was my response to her wanting to staple my ear. Reluctantly I let her (you know, gotta support the wife thing) But am I glad I did. I lost 13 pounds the first 2 1/2 weeks and it has now been 6weeks and I have lost a total of 23 pounds.. Almost to my pre-married weight. (That just made me sound like a girl didn't it...pre-married weight...LOL)My wife has had tremendous success with her clients and offers a very informative website for people to learn about the procedure prior to having it. I just thought I would put it out there for anyone interested.. go to www.dietstaple.com .. There is a lot to learn.

I have had benefits from acupuncture (placebo effect or not), and there is a form of acupuncture where you do walk out with tiny needles in your ear, with a piece of tape over them. They are supposed to fall off naturally in a couple of weeks. I never had it done for weight loss, but I was trying to fight off inflammation (mostly on the lymph nodes) and felt an improvement while they were on. So take that as you will.

I've heard of this stapling for weight loss scam, and also of stapling to stop smoking. If it sounds too good to be true, it must be.

Well of course many of you are skeptics because of this...I had it done and it has been great. I had the procedure in my chiropractors office who he is licensed to do it,he explains all pros there isnt many cons just if you dont keep your ears clean you can get an infection. But for 20% it is aggressive weightloss around 8 pounds a week 60% experience moderate weightloss around 1 pound a week and 20% experience nothing at all. My doc used a probe to find my pressure points and marked it then he stapled it in...it felt like an earpiercing...I was scared because I thought the worst, but it was great. My appetite has gone from a 10 to a 4 instantly. I am eating 25% than before. I can stop and get coffee at Starbucks a small cup will do and 1/4 of muffin i give the rest to my son. Lunch i can eat a grilled chicken sand no fries no coke(because i dont crave it) and dinner maybe some nuts and water.....Before I would go to Mickey D's and get a breakfast combo and for lunch chick fil a combo and a full dinner...No more I have noticed a diffrence and its like its not even there. cleanliness is key and you should be fine....The procedure runs 50-60.00 and that covers consultation staple and follow-up so what do you have to lose. I feel great and love it.

My sister has had this done and with absolutely no problems. The weight is coming off and her blood pressure is coming back down to normal. My elderly parents both recently had ear stapling done and are seeing amazing results. Sugar craving is gone, so my dad's diabetes is more under control. Mom has suffered from overeating for years. Now the constant craving of food is gone and her blood pressure is better. I am looking to have ear stapling done as soon as I can locate a reputable person qualified to do it.

I recently had the ear staple procedure done in both ears, I was a skeptic but knew of a few people with success. I learned quickly that you still have to have some sort of willpower. So far I have lost 4 pounds the first week and my snacking inbetween meals has stopped. But I sometimes eat because I SEE it not because I'm hungry. My stomach does feel full and that allows you the chance to make better choices of food. If you don't make better choices, I think you have just added another hole in your head. You also have to clean and doctor your ear twice a day or more so you will have to take care of your ears so you won't get an infection. I tried this procedure because I can't take any medications that will alter my heart condition and I figured it was close to being natural. Overall, I don't eat as much and I don't want as much so, I guess I would consider it a success for me but the doctor did tell us that there is a percentage that it would not have any effect on, and I heard that this will wear off so if you don't have some sort of lifestyle changes in place by that time, I bet the weight will come back.

I am a RN and one of the nurses at the hospital where I work (who is actually APN who teaches nursing) had it done. She has lost 29 lbs in one month. She has had absolutely no problem at all.

Input only: I am a doctor of 15 years. Acupuncture is a side hobby of mine. I have a fellowship and diplomate in acupuncture education in addition to doc degree. I practice weight loss reduction using auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture w/needles). I follow with a needle patch (covered very small needle used for this purpose as approved by FDA). I never have had a problem and rate of loss is around 75% overall. Again, with highest honor of acupuncture post graduate studies...never learned the staple technique, was not taught as standard accepted ACUPUNCTURE procedure. It is NOT acupuncture, it is a staple in your ear. It is not new that psychological factors play a part in any health care related entity. I am sure that there are people that would lose weight if you told them to spin around three times per day in a counterclock wise rotation and twist their right ear while doing it (just kidding, dont try this) A large puncture hole in the ear, next to the skull bone, not covered, creating ...can kill you.
THIS IS NOT ACUPUNTURE!!!!!
sorry, getting on soap box... thanks!

I had this procedure done about 3 months ago. My mother in law had it done at the same time. I don't know if we just had a bad experience or what, but she had to have hers taken out a few weeks ago because of infection. She is a very clean woman and followed all the direction for keeping it clean with the alcohol and the neosporin. She lost maybe 3 pounds in the 2 weeks she had it in. I have not seen any results, and in fact i think it's making me hungrier. The only thing my staples do is make my ear bleed and it's sore where she put it in. I too have followed the cleaning procedures to a T. When I first got mine in I found it a bit painful to open my mouth, even just to talk. To me, the whole thing was a big scam. I need to have them taken out but where I got them put in, they charge $15 for removal. It was $30 to put in and now they want to charge me for giving them back. Unfortunately I have to wait a couple more weeks because we are going out of town. Does anyone know how I can take these stupid things out on my own by any chance???

Yes, you can get a medical staple remover. Do not use anything but a "medical staple remover" otherwise you could really hurt yourself. I am in the ear stapling business myself, (and I am currently writing under my husband's name, because I was checking this out and came across your question). Where are you located at? If you are anywhere near the Enid area, my website is www.dietstaple.com and I have my contact info on the site. I will remove them free of charge if you are visiting the area. It is such a simple procedure to remove them and it is silly for people to charge.. I have always thrown it in with the initial price of the stapling. It sounds as though yours needs to be repositioned, and in reference to your mother in law.. sometimes it just happens. Things like hair spray can effect your stapling and also some are just more sensitive than others. She may experience better luck next time, many do. I hope this helps.. What a scam! Sticking a needle in your ear will really do a whole lot to stop you from eating. Unless you get an infection that either makes it painful to eat or so sick you vomit it all back up, it doesn't do anything to really help you loose weight. The whole accupuncture thing is a a load of BS! It might make you more alert about certain things in your body, or make you focus on the pain of the needles rather than the pain you went in for, but it doesn't cure anything, or help anything. It just leaves you with a bunch of puncture marks!

I was skeptical like a lot of people until I visited with my brother on Christmas day. He had his ears stapled and has lost 18 lbs so far. He has not had any problems at all. I will be getting mine done in the next couple of weeks.

GOOD LUCK ANG... I am sure you will do fine. and "L" my suggestion would be to do a little research on the effects of acupunture and auricular therapy prior to labeling a procedure BS... Ear stapling is based on the study of "ear acupunture" and utilizes the body's micro system to treat various parts and ailments. Upon research you will find that this procedure has a logical and scientifically proven explaination. If you would like further information on the effects of acupunture and in turn the effects that we are able to provide through ear-stapling contact us at www.dietstaple.com ...

Well I got it done. And it wasn't bad at all. Athough I have had a slite headache since I've had it done. I don't know what that is all about. Does anyone know?
It seems to be helping. We will see. I hope it helps me because nothing else seems to.
Thanks Randy I checked out your web page lastnight. It was helpful. I'll keep you informed on how things are going.

My sister and mother both got their ears stapled. I don't see how people get infections. The stapled didn't even puncture the skin. They're just sort of clamped on there. And they haven't eaten nearly as much. It may be the placebo effect... But whatever it is... it is working

Wow, I have never heard of such! If it's working for your mother and sister, then more power to them! As for me, I"m looking for a natural substance to help me control my sweet tooth as well as my appetite.

I just got the ear staple yesterday, and I am only 17 years old. I have already seen improvement in my eating behaviors. I eat way less than I used to. I crave sweets less than I used to. Even if I dont lose any weight, its great that my appetite has changed!

I have the ear staples and they DO WORK, and hurts no more than having your ears peirced. If your pushing on them then you didn't read your instructions..Keep them clean and do as they tell you and they will not get infected. AND yes I have lost weight and they do curve your hunger. Everyone has an opinion, but unless you have done it don't knock it

I am interested in getting this ear stapling procedure done. I heard about it on my local news station. However, I didn't catch a local person in my area that does this type of procedure. If anyone knows of a professional and sanitary place in the North Carolina area (preferably Raleigh, NC) let me know. Thanks.

Ang - did the same staple apply for weight loss and smoking? I am curious to know if they are two different points or if one staple will suffice for both - anyone?

Jamie: to find a qualified person, look for an actual acupuncturist, not for an "ear stapling for weight loss" place.

I've had good results from acupuncture, but it is exactly because I believe in it that I don't think unqualified people should be stapling people's ears. If they get the wrong spot...

I am a family nurse practioner. I treat patients that are obese and I do not treat obesity unless with an alternative method such as the ear stapling or dietary management with exercise. I am 25-30 pounds overweight and my first born son will be married on April 15, 2006. I run 3 days a week and exercise 2 days a week but over the years my exercise regime has not prevented me from gaining weight. I would live to lose 20 pounds before April 15, 2006 and I had both ears stapled tonight. Perhaps the stapling with add a placebo effect that will curb my appetite and perhaps the procedure really affects the hunger center. I will send my result via this email site.
God's graces to us all that are striving to lose weight and be healthy emotionally and physically.
