The End of the Hourglass Figure
If you thought that body shapes had changed over the last 50 years - you'd be correct. A new study has researched the body shapes of 6000 women and concluded that the fashion industry is woefully out of sync with reality.
The research found that although only 8 per cent of women now had the sort of hourglass figure flaunted by curvaceous 1950s film stars such as Sophia Loren, designers and manufacturers continued to make clothes to fit a slim-line version of that figure.

The changing figure size is a source of consternation for many fashion designers. Should they design clothes that fit the people - or rail on about how women are too big?

Sophia Loren (1955)
The quintessential hourglass
Welsh fashion commentator Jayne Blight said many women found difficulty in finding the right size clothes to wear. But she called on people to be more careful with their diet and to watch their figures. She said, "In my opinion people should be more health and weight conscious.
"We have such high obesity rates in this country we are catching up with the US. I know that the retailers should make bigger sizes but also people should be more health conscious and try and stay within the structures that have been made over the years.(via icWales)

I have an hourglass figure, but so does my mom and so do my grandmas. The shape of your figure depends mostly on your bone structure, not on your weight. Height has nothing to do with your body shape either, because I am petite and still have an hourglass shape. Everyone needs to stop being so judgemental. You were born with a beautiful body and you need to love it and nurture it.
ReplyFirst, shouldn't the difference between bust and waist be a ratio rather than a fixed measurement? Also, an annoyance that no clothing manufacturer ever seems to address: do you measure while breathing in, or out?
ReplyIf I mearure while breathing out, I'm a spoon. If I measure while breathing in, I'm lost between the spoon and hourglass descriptions. 35"-25"-38", or 33"-27"-38"...why doesn't anyone address the breathing when it makes two inches difference in the fit?
Well... I contantly have my one friend saying how I have a "perfict hourglass figure" but accourding to this I have that spoon figure... -_-;; With my height it's very difficult for me to find jeans that fit. Typically they dont fit in the length... I honestly wear a size zero, and sometimes 1. Which is really hard to find... and no I'm not anerexic... or belemic... I can't help it, and I sit at the computer all day basically. They really need to start designing clothes for different shapes, and heights. It's just stupid that I can't get the right length in jeans.
Replyits funny how everybody here claim they have a hourglass figure, when only about 9% have this shape!! i guess we have some positive thinkers here!
Replywell let's see... from my bust to my waist its a 14 inch difference and a 15 inch difference from my waist to my hips... and finding clothes is hell I think I'd rather go naked sometimes ... it's not easy and what would be really nice is for a store to cater to the main shapes of women like the ones they have listed on the website up above maybe that would solve a few problems... oh and by the way myself being curvy and not fat, not aiming at any women on here... but I'm really sick and tired of all the pressures they have pressed upon us women to be a damn certain size! we should all learn to love the shape we are!! and to hell with being a size zero! marilyn monroe was considered the sexiest woman alive of the century , so why are women all around striving to be so thin?
ReplyBy the way I'm usually always 41 27 41 ... these damn hips decided to be 42 :( ... but I'm not letting them stay that way for long :)
ReplyIm 13, and im a pear shape. my hips are bigger than my bust and the top thighs stick out more than my hips because my bottom is big and goes outward aswell so it stand out badly, so i cant wear skinny jeans, or long tops/short dresses that people are wearing, its so hard. i cant wear normal tops with jeans because my legs stick out and it looks hidious, i have real trouble finding clothes and at the end of the day its only going to get worse and i cant think of anything to do about it, its eating me inside and im really hating the way i look at the moment.
ReplyI'm 36(32D)-24.5-36 and 5'8'' and my shoulders are even to my hips. I have a fairly long torso and long legs. I turned fifteen recently and am pleased with my figure (hourglass) cos I bike and am fairly active to maintain a toned look. I eat large amounts of food (mostly healthy) unlike my friends who are obsessed with dieting and skip meal after meal to later eat ice creams and crisps. Strangely enough they endlessly complain about their flat chests and lack of waists. I'm wondering. At what age does one stop growing in terms of my figure i.e my hip bone, my bust? I would love to be even more voluptous as long as the weight stays away from my waist which seems to be natural occuring for me.
ReplyThe reason majority here claim to have an hourglass here is:
ReplyThe measurements are incorrect.Women have a strong tendency to adjust reality to make them feel better. i.e. sucking in stomach, indenting skin when measuring by pulling the tape too tight. Similar story in Vanity sizing. It's very important to NOT round your measurements down or do any of the above.
Be honest!
my figure is the rare one...HOURGLASS...:-) which makes me much happier with it then i am!!
ReplyWow, Joe. You say that you only want to date a girl who has a perfect hourglass figure, but judging by your personality, it seems you're gonna have one hard time attracting ANY type of girl due to your attitude problem. Why don't you quit your whining and try not being such a vain butthole for a change. Might want to tone down the swearing too, that's more unattractive than "DISGUSTING RECTANGULAR SHAPED WOMEN" will EVER be. No wonder you're still single :D
Ooh, just got burned by a 17 year old. You KNOW you're a loser when....
ReplyWait...I posted waaaay too late to that Joe guy from earlier. Whoops.
Anyways, I have a problem with jean shopping as well. I don't know exactly what my figure is, but I'm only 5'2" with thicker thighs, so jeans are always too long, huge around the hips, but tight in the thighs. It's such a pain. I'm not fat at all, but going jean shopping and walking out of the store after nothing fits you right can really drag down your self-esteem.
ReplyTry wide leg pants in a darker color preferably with a bit of viscose to fit your hips while skimming over your thighs. You should NOT buy trousers/jeans that are tight at the bottom part of your leg cos it creates the drumstick effect. Or buy dark jeans that flare at the end. Use the length of the trousers to your advantage the best length is to reach the heel of your foot paired with some heels to elongate you. If to long try getting a tailor to adjust.
Replyi'm a teenager and i weigh 100 lbs. i'm 5'4" and my measurements are 32B-23-34. i'm such a stick. i'm flat chested and have no body even if i try.
ReplyHourglass figures are musculer and bigboned. There is at least a six inch difference between the waist, hips and bust.
It is not too difficult to find clothes for your body shape you just need to know what looks good.
When it comes to jeans, hourglass figures can wear straight legs jeans and skinny jeans (If you are short, I don't recommend skinny jeans), long shirts are best with a thin belt around the waist to emphasize your skinny waist.
Pear body shapes are best in straight leg jeans or bootcut jeans, and I recommend flared shirts.
Apple body shapes are best in straight legs jeans and bootleg jeans with a shirt that has has a scoop neckline.
The ruler or banana body shape can wear flared jeans or skinny jeans and shirts witha tie waist.

ReplyHi everyone,
Im a hourglass figure size 12 in most and I cant believe how many others women find it a problem finding clothes...My biggest problem is actually finding bras that fit!!!
I got my chest measure a couple of months ago since my bras werent sitting right and I came out to find that my measurement was a 32FF!!!
What I normally find is that tops never seems to sit right... they always end up looking baggy and making me seem bigger than I am OOOORR tops too short which make my chest looks ridiculous!!
Replyhas anyone go any advice?
What is my body type? I have a 40 bust 33 waist 40 hips. What does this body type sound like to you? Oh, and my shoulders are a 42. I am thinking inverted triangle. Also, whenever I lose or gain weight, my bust and hips always change together.
Reply@Shuntae you are a rectangle
ReplyI'm 13 and my body measurements are 35-26-35.The hourglass figure runs in my family.Plus,I'm not done developing yet,so my bust and hips are going to get bigger, especially since every other women in my family has big hips/breast.Is there any way to predict how those measurements will be when youre done developing?
I hate how "curvy" has come to mean "fat". I'm the exact hourglass figure--34,21,34--and yet I'm a size zero! Zero has come to mean "really really scarily thin" and so anything in a size zero is made for those anorexic, flat models on the runway that look like prepubescent boys, not for women with real curves. I NEED SOME CLOTHES THAT FIT!
ReplyHi, just a question, 'cause some people look at me and say that I'm fat, I am 24 yrs. old, and only 5'0", I weigh 100 - 102 lbs. and my measurements are 34 - 26 - 34. I need to know if my body is just at the right size and if it is healthy for my height. thanks.
Replyam i a hourglass my mesherments are 39-29-39
ReplyWell I am 5'8 and a size 8 hourglass figure with a 10.5 diff between my bust and hips and I do not eat greasy fast food, sugar or anything processed and i have 1 child and I have to tell you that the shape of women now has to do with genetics as well as evolution and that is why you will find that the women overseas tend to have hourglass shapes. The closer you get to the origin the more authentic of a product you will get-and by the way I also think you are a pig Joe.All you hourglass figured ladies remember that the most beautiful women in the world have almost always been hourglass figures(Marilyn Monroe,Jane Mansfield,Ava Gardener,Sophia Loren just to name a few) and thier timeless beauty still influences hollywood and fashion today,so be pround and embrace the most feminine of all figures.

I wish I had more of an hourglass shape, but I also think height has a little bit to do with things. If you're short, your torso is going to be a little smaller and you have to still fit the same amount of intestines and internal organs into that space. Therefore, your waist is going to be a little bigger in comparison to your hips. I'm pretty short, 5'3" and I weigh 100 lbs. My measurements are 32-23-33, so I'm not quite an hourglass, but I think I'd probably be one if I were a bit taller :)
ReplyWell I am 5'3 and a size 3 Prominent Hourglass figure and I am VERY grateful for that. But YES I have YET to find any clothing especially JEANS/ PANTS That fit my body shape. I am very curvy ( Very big in the butt and hips and very slim in the thighs and waist) All of the jeans i have ever tried flatten my but, are too big in the wait, too big in the thighs and they just completely hide my shape. I heard the SEVENS JEANS ( 7 of all mankind) are good for hourglass fiures, I haven't tried them yet.. I am tired of getting all of my clothing tailored just to STILL have it not even come out right. I have to get everything tailored usually because I am so short ( even though I wear high heels with everything.. I'm on the hunt ! Lol
Replymy appologies, I should've reread what I typed before posting for spelling errors. I meant to say "Waist" not wait and Butt not but
ReplyWell, just for the heck of it, I asked Mrs J about her finding clothes. She is very fit and trim, and even though she is short, her figure is very symetrical. Well to my surprise she said;" I can't ever find pants that fit!." HaHa!! Who knew! Now I'm wondering, do they make pants/jeans that fit anybody??
ReplyI think you could probaby find jeans that fit if you go to a tailor and have some custom made for your figure. Otherwise, I think we're pretty much out of luck. This is why men have an easy time buying jeans. My husband just came back with some...they just have to fit around the waist and not be too terribly huge in the butt region.
ReplyI never knew that hourglass was the most rare figure, but I also hate how "curvy" has been the euphemism for FAT now a days, because I am VERY curvy but i'm thin, I just have huge hips, but and breasts, And my shape curves like an hourglass.. and what is UP With jeans and pants being so damn long ?! The petite ones are usually proportioned wrong so there's no way they would fit me and too are too short for me to wear with high heels, because with heels i'm about 5'7
ReplyHow about Hudspn jeans? IThey looked like they fit the hourglass figure pretty well when I saw them on a website. But i was told sevens fit hourglass the best. It's a lot harder to find the right fitting jeans when you're skinny and curvy, like thin thighs but huge hips and butt and tiny waist, Ughhhh :(
oops I meant HUDSON jeans..
ReplyI am a true hourglass figure (37 c-cup/26/37...which supposedly gives me the "ideal" Waist to hip ratio of .7. I can't figure out why that is considered Ideal. I have big hips)and I can COMPLETELY empathize with sarah (the 5'3" Sarah). I am only one inch taller than you and finding jeans is a bitch. I finally found a couple Gap jeans and H&M ones that looked somewhat pleasing. Finding tops that are not stretchy is a pain in the ass too. Buttons always seem to want to "pop" right about the bust....It pisses me off so mych that I HATE shopping for clothes. Dresses.....FORGET IT!!! It seems as if you are not at least 5'7", with a rectangle shape and NO hips you are lucky.
I do know one thing thopugh.....EVERY man I know, my husband included LIKES a curvy girl. Whether you are 100 pounds and thin or 180 pounds and a bit on the heavy side, it is the hourglass shap[e that men seem to STILL enjoy. Lucky us....I guess...

Replyyes I know I see my typing errors. Im tired. AND i meant if you are not those proportions you are UNlucky. my bad. :)
Replyam i an hourglass? 34C-25-34
Replyit seems that everybody here is an hourglass! I will talk for the 46% of rectangles out there! I am thin (120 pounds for 5foot6) and I am a rectangle (35-30-35). I think that the most beautiful shape is the hourglass so for all of you complaining of being hourglasses... it is even harder to find clothes when you are a rectangle. I have to shop in the men's department for pants because waist are always to small and thighs are always too big in women's clothes. I have really small thighs which is rare on a women so it looks good with shorts but it is almost impossible to find pants where I dont have a lot of excess fabric at the legs.
ReplySince I want to become a fashion stylist in the future, what advice would you give me to make women feel better about themselves? I would like to know about all advices and ideas you've got, so I can in the future style women in clothes that-: fit their bodys; NO MATTER WHAT SHAPE OR SIZE,and make them feel good about themselves! I'M SICK OF SEEING WOMEN SUFFERING BECAUSE OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO DON'T APPRECIATE THE FEMALE BODY THAT IS REALISTIC AND H E A L T H Y!!!!!
ReplyTo be honest, I'm a borderline hourglass/spoon/rectangle. But I consider myself to be an hourglass and would like to have a proportionally smaller waist (and slightly smaller boobs) as that is what I consider attractive. I would not say that designers put importance in or make clothes for an hourglass figure. All of the models look like rectangles to me.
I must say that clothes often don't look right on me because I do have fairly large breasts and it makes me look top-heavy (although my hips are actually an inch or two bigger) or pulls some tops open at the front (unadjustable "wrap" tops in particular), and I've gotten used to having my trousers loose around the waist. I'm also short (5 foot or so) and have to have trousers turned up, and tops are often too long. (I live in tank tops and some go too low because the straps are too long for me.) When I'm buying tops and dresses I've found I best suit 'Victorian' (Corsets or similar with thinner waists) or 50s style, rather than the clothes commonly found in highstreet shops.
Replyi am just fat i think i am a hourglass and i exercise and diet all the time and lost some weight but i need to get tone please help get me some advices.
ReplyI'm 18 years old and although all my friends say they envy me for my curvy hourglass figure - it's always been more of a curse. My figure was always much more defined than that of other girls as a teenager, and I received countless taunts for my C cup boobs at 13. By 15 I had DD boobs and received too much unwanted male attention from men who thought me older than I was, and now I hate going shopping because I feel fat. I am forced to wear size 16tops and size 14 trousers to accomodate my boobs and hips, and my clothes then gape around my waist. It drives me mad, all clothes at the moment are skinny leg jeans - totally unflattering to anything but a beanpole. In response to Joe's comment the fashion industry seems to be reflecting not a rise in obesity but designing clothes only for the skinniest of rectangles, whilst we hour glasses are forced to hide our beautiful figures in poorly fitting clothes.
Replyi just read a comment above saying that hourglass figured can read skinny leg or straight leg jeans! NO! Don't! skinny legs make you look fat! They make you look like a goat, with huge bulging hips and butt going down to ankles that look like they shouldnt support you. far more flattering is a pair of good bootcut or skinny flare jeans... the slight kick out at the bottom will balance out your hips and shoulders
Replyim also not sure whether i fit into the hourglass or pear shaped category.
my shoulders are quite wide:37 inches
34-25.5-36
is it possible to be an hourglass and just be a b-cup?
since my bust measures 2 inches less than the hips i always presume that im pear shaped. but because of my shoulders i often look like an hourglass.
can someone enlighten me? thank you!
