The End of the Hourglass Figure
If you thought that body shapes had changed over the last 50 years - you'd be correct. A new study has researched the body shapes of 6000 women and concluded that the fashion industry is woefully out of sync with reality.
The research found that although only 8 per cent of women now had the sort of hourglass figure flaunted by curvaceous 1950s film stars such as Sophia Loren, designers and manufacturers continued to make clothes to fit a slim-line version of that figure.

The changing figure size is a source of consternation for many fashion designers. Should they design clothes that fit the people - or rail on about how women are too big?

Sophia Loren (1955)
The quintessential hourglass
Welsh fashion commentator Jayne Blight said many women found difficulty in finding the right size clothes to wear. But she called on people to be more careful with their diet and to watch their figures.She said, "In my opinion people should be more health and weight conscious.
"We have such high obesity rates in this country we are catching up with the US. I know that the retailers should make bigger sizes but also people should be more health conscious and try and stay within the structures that have been made over the years.(via icWales)

ReplyIt's interesting to see what people consider to be an hourglass figure. Personally, I LOOK like an hourglass figure even though I used to be a mixture of the rectangle/triangle. Over the last 4 months, I lost a lot of body fat and weight (about 15 pounds) and I now look like an hourglass figure (37-27-34). Obviously my measurements would put me in the triangle section but people have been commenting me on my figure. So I think it depends on what you wear and how it makes you look.
My clothes are for my broad shoulders so most people have a hard time seeing that I've lost weight, so I've looked A LOT for fitted clothes that would accentuate my hard work (it was really hard to lose weight). I have tailored my old clothes to slim slighty in the waist, or I've added some decorative organza to use as a tie in the back around my waist (I sewed it on the sides, real easy).
To be honest, I think that the only way people could really judge what your body type was is if you were in fitted clothes or a swimsuit. And keep in mind-- a lot of people are overweight in the US, so weight gain AND loss can contribute to how you look.
ReplyHey
ReplyMy name is Rachael and i worry about my figure all the time I'm 17 and never seem to feel comfortable in anything i wear I use to suffer from an eating disorder so my figure is closely watched (by myself obviously) My measurements are 34 D 26/27 depending on the time of the month and 34 hips, this may sound ok but below my smallish waste i have a bloated belly which im realy self concious about can anyone reccomend clothes or exercises etc to make me feel alot better about myself thankyou xx
Rachael,
Can you give us some idea of what your diet looks like?
ReplyAnd by the way about the most women being rectangular part...maybe because a lot of women nowadays strive for the "athletic" body, so instead of wanting fat around the hips and stomach for curves, they opt for muscular traverse and abs. Notice how if you were to look at pictures or women with very washboard stomachs, they don't have curves the way women do when they don't have washboard stomachs. The only exception that I know of is Beyonce Knowles, aside from her it seems that if you are really muscular, out go the curves. You get ANGLES instead.
ReplyOkay. Being an athlete and African American... I am more muscular than over half the ppl writing to this blog. (160 lbs-- but I don't look it). I think it's funny, because I am EXTREMELY short waisted (short torso), 5'4", with a 33-34 inch inseam in the pants (that's TALL). My spine is not as long, it is petite. There is only 1-2 inches between my ribs and pelvic bone.
I have always had a problem, because I need LONGER jeans, the rise in regular tall jeans is 5-6 inches too high.
Jeans from the gap I do O.k., but I have such an ample behind, some pairs don't cover all of my butt. To buy "normal" rise, they gap in the behind, and droop lower.. because my waist is still smaller than my bust and hips.
I am just a WIDER hourglass/ rectangle body-type. I have angular hips, and broad shoulders. (rectangle = I have a pudgier middle due to such a short torso-- and having no "room" for my internal organs: my stomach sticks out). Needless to say, I don't wear mid-drift tops LOL!
My limbs are extended, so depending on the shirt I can wear a x-L Petite, or a regular women's large. Tiny tank tops are not an option. (since I am soo large busted, the large sized, dressy-cute tank tops, don't cover all of my 38 DD's.)
38 DD-34-41 yeesh.
~~~
I had a friend in college, who is the same height of me, and was jealous I had such a curvier, and larger bust. I was jealous, that she had such a longer torso (shirts would fit her better). But in fact, the reality was: she was build opposite of me. LONG torso, short arms, short muscular legs and a pear shape.
(Both of us 5'4"):
Petite pants were too long for her... where I have to resort to Tall jeans (and pants not covering my behind).
Shirts were too short for her (due to her long torso).. I have trouble fitting tops over my bust, and my broader shoulders.
She had awesome muscular legs... BUT she liked my arms and long legs.
Yeeesh... and so on, and so on..
The moral of the story is, be happy with what you got.
We always want what someone else has.. BUT if you got it, you would want something else...
I've ranted enough. Peace.
ReplyI have a typical proportional & tight hourglass body, at height 5'2 cm.. but sometimes I face a difficulty finding a suitable fine-cut top or blouse.. usually it's either smallar & very tight or larger than my actual size!! i wonder why?!
ReplyAlso, waist is a problem too but not as problematic as finding tops.
To Kristine,and to all the pear shaped women out there, I may be wrong but I'm sure the teasing you got was from women. And let me tell you secretly they are jealous. I am not pear shaped and wish I was cause this is the shape men prefer( well at least it's more sexually appealing).
To be more hourglass shaped you should work out with weights to even out the top half of your body.
First however do a lot of cardio to lose maximum fat and you should do your squats and lunges to firm up and tone your hips and but. This will not increase their size significantly, only weight lifting will do that.
But you can work out with weights for your chest shoulders and arms to bring your body into balance. In this way you maintain balanced muscles, anything less will lead to muscle imbalance and will cause you bodily injury.
If you have any questions you can email me Kristine. take care now and all the best in your endeavour.
Replyfirst of all it doesnt matter what type shape people have, as longest your not fat. im sorry to say but fat people will never look attractive in anything they wear. you can be in shape and wear most things out there. Reality check! if your roles stick out it means your faat. alot of fat girls out there think that they can pull cute little outfits, BUt ya cant believe me, when a heavy set women walks by wearing tight clothes, people look, cause ya look funny and scary in most cases, NOT casue your sexy.
i myself used to be fat, (5'5 tall, and 176Ib) now im (130Ib hourglass) when i was big i wore clothes that was fit to my body, i didnt wear anything that will draw attention to my fat.
so those of you who are hourglass, pear,recnagle, and ... you can look sexy, hot, and pretty if your not fat.
those of you who are strong enough to admit that your fat, either eat away more, cause ya depressed , or put down them fries down and go wrok out!! and yes one more thing. yall wish ya have hourglass figuer. peace!
ReplyDesigners do not make hourglass figured clothing its all for rectangle shapped people. i have a 39.5 inch bust 29 inch waist and 39.5 inch hips and i cant find any clothes that fit me outside of the urban stores and i cant wear that to work. most of it i wouldnt be caught dead wearing to the club. I wish i could find clothes that fit. real clothes. nice clothes. :(
ReplyI'm 13 years old and weigh a surprising amount of 10st. I was blessed with the hourglass figure, with a 42" bust, 25" waist and 39" hips...I'm normally a size 12 on top and bottom, only 5ft 5"... But I hate my school uniform, with them horrible fitting blazers, shapeless grey trousers, flat shoes and straight white shirts, I've had to make a few alterations to it, now I wear skinny style dark grey trousers, great fitting shirts that really come in at the waist, thus flatten my stomach even more and a fitted blazer, I've never felt more beautiful in my school uniform... But the boys still think it's fun to call me fat. Bummer. I can't wait to finish school, I could never get away with wearing sky-high heels around my friends now, as they all still have the figure of 8-year old girls, which I think is a shame.
I rate all you hourglass girls/women you've been blessed even if it is hard to find clothes you work around your body, everyone has to!!!!!
ReplyHey everyone,
ReplyLook seriously can everyone please stop complaining about their shape weight or anything else like that. As women we are supposed to have curves and fat bits, no matter what ANYBODY says we are very beautiful with all our imperfections and flaws. In our society today there is too much emphasis placed onm image, designers make us believe that to be skinny or emaciated is to be beautiful but I ask you, when looking at paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance have you ever seen a stick thin woman? No. Because women in those times with curves were and still are considered extremely beautiful. And speaking from the point of view of an artist and a woman with an hourglass figure, people with flaws like wrinkles and curves are so much more interesting to draw and paint then these tiny women. There is no such thing as the perfect body, because there is no such thing as perfection.
Jo,
ReplyI'm 5 feet, 10 inches and I weigh 49 kg and I have a rectangular figure. I don't scarf fast food or anything like that, and if people do, well... that's their own business and it's not for you to comment on.
But I guess you're perfect and have never had the occasional junk food splurge. If you hate it so much that people can make their own choices without asking your permission... go and see a psychiatrist.
I have been reading all of your comments, and I have to ask:- " All of you who say that you have an hourglass figure, what is your definition of the hourglass?"
ReplyMe personally if you want a classic example of the hourglass then look at Kate Winslet. Thats an hourglass shape.All of you who say that you are, does your body shape look like Kate's?
societies definition of the hourglass, is wayyy off. I've looked at some pictures of some women that some man has said have the hourglass shape, and I'm sorry to say that he has no idea. those women weren't anywhere near the vicinity of being an hourglass. In my opinion if you have a body shape like kate winslet or mae west then you can say that you have an hourglass figure. Think about an actual hourglass, how it curves in the middle. when you look in the mirror, look at your hips do they curve in then flare out?
ReplyAll I have to say is...
I love you all! *hugs all the variations of woman there is in the world and would not change a one*
I'm a 37C-28-40 after two kids.
I've worked hard to get this...I tend to have a pear? As I've quite the shapley bum and hips. I love it tho...with a nice corset I can play up my shape. I wish I was this and that about my body but really....if you have that then you lose what you do like. Thing that keeps me happy is that I love pilates/yoga. Not only does it keep me limber but helps my back...carried her spawn low and in her hips so caused lower back labor. *winces* Joy! But really I was just wanting to comment that women are just that....like men we come in a variety of sizes and shapes that morph and change many times over your life. Enjoy what you have, embrace it and make it your own cause when you pass on do you want to look back and think....god those jeans look like shit on me or do you want to smile and recall the bliss you had?
Just saying...*gives love*
ReplyHaving an hourglass figure has nothing to do with body measurements. It's the shape of your body. I'm 5 ft 7, I can't really explain how my hips curve, but if you look at an hourglass. You'll see how the sides of it curve in well thats how my hips are curved. I believe that the so called measurements that say your an hourglass figure are total bullshit. It's the shape of your body!!!!
ReplyJust because your body measurements match these measurements doesn't neccessarily make you an hour glass.
I don't know I could be wrong, but that's what I believe.
I have a strong hourglass shape - more than Sophia Loren, more like Anna Held. Hips and bust the same size and waist 12"-14" smaller. I'm 5'4", and this is true whether I weigh 110 (dancing career and eating disorder) or 210 (after a car accident when I was disabled for 3 years). The problem is that I wear a 32H bra, and these are absolutely impossible to find - even online they're rare, expensive, and ugly. I have actually started wearing corsets just because my shoulders hurt so much at the end of a day. I cannot find a shirt that fits to save my life, so I have to have clothes custom made. I can't always afford that though, so right now I'm wearing maternity clothes. I've never been pregnant, but they're the only things that fit my small shoulders and enormous chest. I don't own a pair of jeans or dress slacks because none fit both my waist and my hips.
I like being curvy, I just hate how much it *hurts.* I hate the headaches and the red marks on my shoulders and the skirts that ride up on my chest and leave welts and enormous pain in the pocketbook from having to have custom clothes. Someday I'd like to go into a store and buy a shirt.
ReplyHi Mara, I'd just like to know. Who is Anna Held?
Replyhey mara, I've just seen pictures of Anna Held. Their wasn't any of her without a corset on, so its impossible to tell whether or not she actually had an hourglass figure as the corset when worn was designed to cinch the waist in like the shape of an hourglass.
Replywait a minute I think I just found a photo of Anna Held without a corset, and it looks as if she does have an hour glass figure.
ReplyI'm a teen. I am 5 ft tall, 34c, 29, 34, am slightly overweight and wear size 5 junior jeans, but i have a large butt and slim hips. i have broad shoulders and my shirts are junior medium or womens small. often strain across the bust and occasionally in the shoulders. what body shape am I and what brands might fit my shape? i have a lot of trouble finding suff that fits just right.
Replyalso, all of u with short legs, i understand how you feel. have to roll my pants or buy short size. but if any of you run, be happy you have short legs. anyway, all of you with hourglass figures, i am jealous. just letting you know.
ReplyHello. I have a dilemma. first off, i used to think i had a terrible figure. I used to all the time be mistaken for a boy. right now, i am fat. I am about 165. but i am only 5'2. here are my measurements: 39 1/2, 33, 39 1/2- 40. what does that sound like to you guys? when i was thinner, i had most of the same problems as described with the hourglass figure. I wouldn't have a problem admitting to having an hourglass figure, except for the fact that my shoulders are wider than my hips. way wider. i read somewhere that i am a "cone" or "triangle". it's really discouraging not being able to put a definite label on it. I am looking for answers. my sister says that i am an hourglass, but it just doesn't look like it to me. So your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ladies.
Reply-Shuntae
Shuntae, you're an hourglass. I used to hate having broad shoulders too, and I'm also only 5'2", but hey, they are in right now. All the small shouldered girls are trying to build them up so they don't look like pear shapes.
ReplyDo the measures have to be so specific? Like Shuntae has a 6 inch difference, but the diagram at the beginning says something like a 9 inch difference. Is it always by measurement?
ReplyIm a teen also
By looking at the comments to this artical. i have indicated that alot of ladys are very very passionate about their issue and alot are concerned.
This whole fashion mo jo has gotten so out of control its discusting. Really, i think its sad that the fashion industry is now telling US what is healthy looking or not. Do they have a medical deploma? i think not.
i think it depends on how healthy u are on the inside.
Every body's shape is beutiful in it's own way and also very differnt. Every shape has its bonus and weak points.
I also am a strong beliver that looks are not always everything..personality is the key. I think in today's stone age people should be paying more attention to improving whats on the inside first then concentrate on the outside if weight is a huge issue. It even comes down to if u act confident it reflects on people around you.
Replythank you for ur time.. sorry about any spelling mistakes
Ladies, I feel sorry for you, the fasion industry doesn't take into consideration the reality in which you are. They are all geared toward skeletons, put a dress on em and call em beautiful, it doesn't matter if they have a face like Parrot Hilton, I mean Paris* Hilton. Me personaly I like curvy women, a few extra pounds doesn't bother me either, neither sex is attracted to abnormally thin or morbidly obese, I was big at one time, now I'm not. Don't pay attention to men that love that bone rack look(they are sectretly gay because they like the girls with the shape of a boy) and don't pay attention to the media either, they are influenced by money, and all the designers have money. Just pay attention to yourself and keep your confidence up, we like confident women but not arrogant, if you are too big,lay off the twinkies, if you are too little,eat a pizza. I have the right to say that, I've been through it. Sadly to say some men/boys/male humans, (all a matter of maturity) never grow out of the 18 year old mind set of letting the TV control what you want in every aspect of life, food, music, women, men lol Genetics to play a role in things too, but they can be overcome, some may work harder than others though. I live in Kentucky, fried chicken, fried catfish, fried okra, fried taters, you get the idea, its especially hard because I love food:) Y'all take care!
ReplyMy website has my measurements going back to 1980, 2 months before my 13th birthday. My earliest measurements, on 2/21/1980 were 75.34-70.51-80.64 cm.
ReplyOn 4/25/1983, on my 16th birthday, I was 91-89-100.
At 17 98-95-104.2. At my heaviest, on 5/7/1998, I was up to 115.3-113.5-127 cm. On 1/10/1983, I decided to use metric for my measurements.
I'm a college student around 19. I have a natural hourglass figure, and didn't really get it until my hips started broadening. I have a rib cage that tilts inward causing my waist to appear slimmer and then it curves out into my hips. Fraternal twins run in my family so wide hips is common amongst the women in my family. I enjoy having this figure because many of my friends usually say how jealous they are of it. Finding pants can be rather hard, but I go to The Limited or Express for their curvy pants.
ReplyI hear all of you ladies loud and clear and I am taking notes. I am a commerical stylist and costume designer and I am currently writing a book on wardrobe. I will be addressing alot of these issues and interviewing both fashion and costume designers for commentary on alot of these issues.
ReplyLadies, love yourself and take care of yourself. No fast food, no sugar and no red meat, period. Preserve, Preserve. These things deterioate not only your bodies but your health and your mind. Accept your shapes BUT take care of yourself. The real question is, "What are you saying about who you are when you dress?" For the lawyer-to-be who wears jeans, she can still look smart by adding a blazer or smart accessory. For the apple shaped grandma, you can still attract my senses and spirit with color or an exotic accessory. Ladies, universal standardized clothing is reality but not a total loss and alterations ARE necessary for perfect fit. The real education is in knowing your fabrics, colors and the art of BALANCE. Be on the lookout for my book and feel free to visit my site www.previewportfolio.com Email me with any suggestions. I would appreciate your opinions. Love to all. Estée Ochoa
i thought i was an hourglass but your bust has to be the same size as your hips, and i have a small bust, but bigger hips so i must be a spoon one. i'm really quite thin too though, and when i was younger, only like 11 or 12 this girl said i was anorexic lol, because i was thin..but i've been thin my whole life, and both my sets of parents are thin, so its just in my genetics, and yeah, i really hate the sterotype, especially how it stems from Hollywood. Though, it's really dicusting their look! i mean, a lot of thin people get called anorexic by insecure people or jealous or whatever, and theres really quite a difference between slender person and a person with their clavicals, hip bones, and ribs sticking out! There was a TV show on last night, about skinny celbs, and Posh, Nicole, Teri..they're all ones who ARE anorexic, or heading that way, they never looked like that in the past.. i just don't get Hollywoods obsession with looking like skin and bones. it's NOT attractive! Men DO want something to hold on to.
Anyway, yah i'm slim, the spoon type i think, but my hips are defined more they stand out a lot because the rest of me is so slim then i have these defined hips.
I think the hourglass figure is the most attractive, but Hollywood's gone crazy :o lol, woman have a womanly figure, hips, boobs, bums..should have some flesh on them! They're just isn't anything sexy or attractive about a walking skeleton. EWWWWWWWWW!.
Reply"The rectangular figure is disgusting and I would NEVER date a woman, much less marry a woman, who has a rectangular figure. It's disgusting and unfeminine.
Wanna get a desireable hourglass figure?
GIVE UP ALL THE F*CKING FAST FOOD, FRENCH FRIES, CARBS AND SODA POP!!!!
WORD!!!"
Lol im sorry but you're a f****n retard! The type of figure you are, is namley based on bone structure. If your hip bones are larger than your bust, you are a spoon! so no, ditching fast food doesn't change that. Haven't you realized people can be slim and have these different body types!? ITS ALL TO DO WITH GENETICS YOU F****N RETARD! your genetic make-up also determines your body! for example, my friend is large, she has two large parents. I am slim, and have two slim parents. I eat more than her, and she doesn't eat hardly anything. I can eat whatever i want and my weight never changes from 50kg, she weighs a lot more, and yet she continues to be large, and no matter what she does in life, she will always be large, because its in her genetics.
Even scinetists agree with this, its something like 70% of your body is determined by genetics?
And what's more JOE, is do you know how "discusting" you sound? you make it sound like, actually you said, that have a rectangle body was discusting. Just because the rectangle body's, waist is smaller than the bust? There's nothing discusting about that..
You say you'd never date a rectangle (HAHAHA well thats sad because 46.12% of people are rectangles...) Well many woman wouldn't date someone with an attitude likes yours.
ReplyI cannot tell you how sad I have been reading through all these comments...and you all that wrote them probably don't even realize what is going on. "...blessed with the hourglass figure...." I guess means that I'VE been cursed with an apple shape? Gee, thanks for letting me know that God made a mistake with me.
You are completely defining yourselves by what size you wear, how big your bust is, how small your butt is, and what type of inanimate object your body looks like. You've got numbers for this measurement, numbers for this size, numbers for how much you weigh.
OMG, please go back and re-read what you wrote, and see how much importance you are putting on how much you want to look like, and be shaped like, everyone else.....how much you want to look like a certain standard...how close you can get to what your eyes tell you is the "perfect body." Are you unable to be satisfied with what you were born with? Are you unable to rip yourself away from the wide-eyed, worshiping trance you get into when you see models or actresses or whoever looks like what you want to look like, and celebrate your uniqueness?
There is a book/movie out there....The Stepford Wives....
ReplyI am currently a rectangle under the definition listed (current measurements = 41-33.75-41.25) but am in the process of losing weight. My original measurements when I started to lose were 44+ - 39.5 - 44.5+ and at this rate (losing more inches in the waist rather than hips/bust) I hope to become an hourglass when I achieve my goal weight. My estimated measurements will be 37.5-28.5-37.5, therefore putting me at a 9" difference between both bust-waist and hips-waist. I will surely be happy to get there! (have lost 42lbs so far)
I do think diet can affect your ultimate shape, although you can't reshape your bone structure. For example, I have a relatively thick rib cage, one thing that affects the taper down from my bust to my waist. I can't change that unless I were to have a rib removed. However it means I have larger lung capacity I guess, more able to perform exercise (which is how I lost all this weight!)
ReplyUmm Joe calm down, please do not post your opinions on this site because your not being very helpful. it's like what Danielle has said. I doubt that any one here wants to be considered desirable in your eyes.
Replyanyway ladies help me out. I cannot find a waist that fits. every time I sit down you can see my underwear or I wear a belt and it feels really bunchy. Doesn't matter what the size is, they all do this. there doesn't seem like there is enough room for my butt, which isn't even that big (compared to the rest of me).
Eden, there are some jeans that fit and don't do that, and they aren't all stretch jeans either. I think you need to find a natural waist. The low-waisted pants that look good from the front (not so low it is risque) tend to do that when you sit down, show the underwear. The reason is that it fits better when it either sits on the hipbones (the risque type) or when it fits higher than your regular hipster jeans. I'm not advocating high waist or mom jeans here, just something like this:
http://www.us.levi.com/media/spr06a/levi/prod/pr/l_PR155050_6bc45.jpg
instead of something like this:
http://www.us.levi.com/media/spr06a/levi/prod/pr/l_PR116571_6bc23.jpg
In my experience the second kind is the worst offender when it comes to showing undies. It is a pity cause sometimes we find jeans that we love the color and the fit everywhere else, but they only come with the 2nd kind of waist. Oh well.
ReplyI am a 4-6 hourglass figure, 38-26-38, big chest, big ass, and slim everywhere else... and i find that Anthropologie has the best stuff! Alot of their clothes use retro-patterns with new fabrics and look great!
ReplyWhat am I? Hourglass? Rectangle? Triangle? Spoon? I have a hard time getting clothes to fit and it would be nice if I knew more what to look for. When I look straight into the mirror, and suck my stomach in (which doesn't change the outline at all) I'm 35-25-36. But I do have some fat around my tummy which makes my waist 29" when I'm relaxing. Umm, my chest is the same width as my hips and my shoulders are pretty wide.
So, it seems I don't really fit into any of the categories. According to measurements, I could be a spoon but that doesn't seem to fit because of my wide shoulders so triangle doesn't fit either. I'm not at all narrow up top, just not well endowed. I could then be an hourglass but, again, I'm not busty and my waist isn't that small even though it appears small. The tighter my clothes, the smaller my waist looks. So, am I a rectangle even though it looks like I have curves?
Well, any input would be greatly appreciated as I'd really like to get this figured out!
