Losing Weight the iPod Way
Ever since the Sony Walkman appeared in the 1980s, exercising has never been the same. The song "Headphones" by Icelandic singer Bjork captures the feeling well: "My headphones. They saved my life".

How times have changed
It's not just about music
Virtually every gym has some kind of sound system, pounding out everything from 90s aerobic-style beats to hard rock. However with your own iPod (or player of choice) - it doesn't just have to be about music. I have found that listening to instructional/motivational talks (or interviews) to be the among the most inspiring of all. You could try and browse the bewildering array of podcasts available - but here are a few other options:
PodFitness (free trial) - A unique service that combines a new workout - but has your own music playing in the background! PodFitness have also recruited a number of world-class personal trainers.
iAmplify - This is an intriguing new commercial service that offers audio coaching on most health issues - weight loss, nutrition, strength building, and even Mari Winsor doing a few sessions on Pilates.

I definitely LOVE my mp3 player. I can fit so many songs on there and it fits in my hand. I almost can't work out without it now...it's THAT crucial. :D
ReplyThanks for the links to the podcasts!
My iPod has definitely changed the way I work out! I have to say that Audiobooks are the way to go. Podcasts are okay too but it is nice to get caught up on essential reading and work out at the same time. I just read (listened to) Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner. It was so adorable and the main character is very funny. Considering it took about 5 hours to listen to, that was about 5 workouts out of the way!
ReplyDo you think we will ever get back to the time when people actually speak to each other at health clubs? Next, it will be staff wearing headphones!
ReplyThese devices are great – they can really help keep your energy up and combat boredom on the cardio-machines. Plus I think I am the first guy at the gym with an MP3 player and an AARP card.

ReplyI find it very distracting when people talk to me at the gym so I hope it doesn't go back to that.
Replyi love my ipod shuffle. weighs next to nothing and i don't have to worry about it breaking b/c t has no moving parts.
ReplyI want an ipod but I can't afford it yet...I'm saving up. My cd player is too big to take to work out with. And yeah, I guess I am one who doesn't want to talk to people at the gym, but I am shy. I don't talk to strangers easily. I'd rather just work out and get out!:)
ReplyNicole, you could look into another brand of player. They are much cheaper. I started out with a 256 KB player by a no-name brand and eventually purchased a Nomad Jukebox (cause it also works as back up drive for all the music I have), but my cheap little 256 KB player still works fine. It cost me only $18 on Ebay, and that was ages ago. You could probably get a 1 GB one for around that nowadays.
Replyi use free mp3 workouts i downloaded from www.marinaspodcast.com

Reply"Headphones" is my favorite song on her Post album! :D My heroine...
