How Protein Aids Weight Loss

Most diets that advocate higher levels of protein make the claim that protein "fills you up". Scientists have finally come up with a reason why:

The INSERM team found that feeding rats a high protein diet significantly increased the activity of genes involved in glucose production in the animal's small intestine.
This led to increased glucose production, which was sensed by the liver, and relayed to the brain, causing the animals to cut their food intake.

The researchers claim the weight loss from low-carb diets (such as Atkins) has "nothing to do with the metabolic processing of protein, but because people following these diets simply eat less."

Note that like most studies - this was tested on rats... Hardly conclusive evidence of what happens in humans.

The media may have decided that Atkins is finished - but studies like this will continue to come out, showing that higher protein, lower carbohydrate diets have their place in the pursuit of fat loss.

This is exactly my own experience actually. When I eat more lean protein I am less hungry for total amounts of food. I dont need any rats to tell me :)

Great post - keep em coming :)

This is nothing new – Dr. Barry Sears has been talking about this for at least ten years in his “Zone” books. By balancing protein and carbohydrates in a 30:40 ratio the hormones insulin and glucagon are balanced thereby maintaining better blood sugar stability. The other 30 percent of the calories in the Zone coming from healthy fat also improves satiety.

While the Atkins approach has some of these satiety benefits it also risks throwing your acid-base balance off toward the acidic side resulting in a less efficient metabolism and excessive calcium and other bone mineral loss.
