Brazilian Diet Pills Causing Stir

Imagine failing a pre-employment drug test after taking a diet pill. It seems that a number of popular Brazilian "herbal" diet pills have shown traces of amphetamines, and other substances (via Miami Herald):

Most users aren't aware of the pills' possible dangers. Four women seeking jobs at Baptist Health South Florida in the past six months have failed drug tests, said Thomas Moore, who works in the hospital system's employment program.

All said they were taking nothing more than over-counter diet pills and were stunned to hear their urine was laced with controlled substances. "This one woman was crying, saying this hospital job was what she wanted to spend her life doing," Moore said.

She brought Moore her Brazilian diet pills -- yellow pills to take in the morning, orange pills to take at night. Moore sent them to Robert White of the federally certified DSI Laboratories in Fort Myers.

White told The Herald the yellow pills contained amphetamines. The orange pills contained tranquilizers and a generic Prozac, apparently to bring users down from the jitters caused by amphetamines and allow them to sleep at night.

Dodgy Diet PillsThe main culprit is a pill called Emagrece Sim - supposedly an "all-natural" pill. It seems that no one can be sure exactly what's in these pills. The claims are of 20-30 pound per month weight loss.

Let the buyer beware! I'll leave the final word to one poor user of these Brazilian pills:

After she learned what the pills contained, she stopped taking them. "I felt very bad. I slept for a week."
Most versions of the pills come in five levels, depending on how much weight a person wants to lose. One woman who lost almost 20 pounds in a month said that after she went from Level 4 to Level 5,

"I was really hyper," but when she took the nighttime pill, she couldn't stay awake and fell into a deep sleep at 8:30.

Suspicious, she had the pills tested and discovered the amphetamine-tranquilizer combination.

"This is really big," the woman said. "People in medical institutions, police officers. Everybody is taking these pills and nobody knows what's in them."

Wow, that is pretty crazy. I knew pharmaceuticals weren't as regulated in other countries, but I had no idea that controlled substancees were being put into diet pills. I guess it's a combination of lack of security on the part of US Customs and also the fact that supplements are almost completely unregulated. Kinda scares me!

It is not uncommon for unscrupulous supplement manufacturers to spike their products with cheap pharmaceuticals to produce an effect that will create repeat business.

While this case does seem extreme, it's not like things of this nature don't happen in America... The only thing is that here - when someone finds out about a problem with any form of medication thay usually announce it out of fear... overseas the lax regulation mean that they have less to lose iby keeping thier mouths shut until the public notices for themselves.

Can someone tell me where I can buy some of these pills. Also, is there anyone who is significantly overweight (50+ lbs) who has taken them. If so, how did they affect you. Please help!!!!

I have been using a diet pill called Body Slim that is also a Brazilian diet pill. However I purchased the pills before reading a story similar to the one posted above. After I read the story in my paper I contacted the supplier and they assured me their products have nothing in common with the emagrece products in question. They don't even contain the same ingredients they said. On a side note, so far I am very happy with the pills. Its been 2 weeks and I have lost 5 pounds.

Uh, Brazilian pill fan, the reason you have all that energy is because you were on SPEED. Hello! Illegal drugs WILL make you lose weight...but they're illegal and have horrific side effects. That's why there's rehab...for people that get addicted to speed/cocaine/heroin, etc. The only safe way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Pure and simple.

I took this pill 5 1/2 years ago. The first couple weeks, I lost about 10 pounds. But I aslo lost a few years of my life after that. I got really sick one day, fainted and had to go to the hospital by ambulance. I developed a seizure disorder, that just now after all these years, I was able to stop taking meds to control seizures. Able to drive a car without a problem.

My mother decided to give them a try in September of this year. She also got very sick with the pills. Her potassium level was very elevated and she had heart palpitation.

The labels in the pills are NOT true. They send them to the USA as vitamins and you are right, when I was sick, the found high levels of amphetamines on my blood.

To all of you that are thinking about this pill, please... don't. I only wanted to loose a few pounds and had to go thru a lot because of these pills. And yes, they are illegal drugs. Take this info from two brasilians that are very unhappy with this drug.

cynthia, where did you get those pills you are talking about? there are so many with the same brand name. what vendor did you use? btw, did you mean low levels of potassium? a lack of potassium is what causes heart failure and cardiac arrest in people who diet excessively.

Reply
Cynthia

I got the pills directly from Brazil. At the time, no one in the USA had heard of them. I had to call this doctor over there and he would send them to the USA. They were pretty much the same as the ones around now. The diferent pills thruought the day, I think after breakfast for the first week, then you'd increasse the dosage. After you loose so much weight, you'd go to the next level... etc.
And my mother had a very HIGH level of potassium. The pill has potassium in it. She also had a few other problems, specially after she stoped taking them. She slept for a couple of days, and just looked very down. With the help of a doctor here in the USA, she had to go thru all kinds of tests and detoxication.
Well, don't get me wrong, they do work. You will loose a ton of weight on these pills. There are so many people taking them now. And the are all loosing all the weight. But there are consequencies.

How about just telling us the various sites that sell this product? There are several, including myself, who would like to know. Those who have used this product would be appreciated for saying where you ordered or purchased this product from.

Holy cow. You people can find a diet pill blog but can't google "Brazilian Pill"?! There are dozens of vendors Online. I was looking for “the controversy” when I found this site. But the first sites on my search list were vendors.
And to "Spectra," diet and exercise does not work like magic. Some Americans live under so much stress that they cannot lose weight no matter what they try and chemicals seem to be the cure they are looking for. A little compassion instead of judgment is in order.

I have not taken nor will I ever take another pill for weightloss again. I took [a diet drug] in 1996. It was actually approved by the FDA and I'd heard all about it on 60 Minutes, so I figured I was safe to take it. I had tried everything else because I had a vision condition that was worsening partly due to my weight (260 lbs. and 5'2"). I went to a doctor. I took [a diet drug] for nearly a year. I had some weird symptoms; water retention, heart palpitations, light headedness, etc. but they were all attributed to the weather, too much coffee, low blood sugar. The doctor didn't get anxious about it because he was never told the truth about the drugs. I lost 70 pounds.

I didn't get any heart valve damage like all those people in the class action suit. I got a terminal disease called pulmonary hypertension instead. It causes the tissues of the lungs to thicken and solidify and prevent the transfer of oxygen to the blood. As this happens, the heart is challenged to beat harder against the lungs to try to force the issue and it becomes stressed and enlarged. If not treated, the heart usually just gives out and the patient dies. I was lucky; there was a new orphan drug on the market that kept me alive for 4 years until I received a double lung transplant 2 years ago.

So far the lungs are doing fine. Unfortunately for me, the drugs I'll have to take for the rest of my life have some challenging side effects. I'm now diabetic and have osteoporosis. I've had several compression fractures in my spine so my back is in constant pain. I need to build some muscle but the insulin I must inject slows that process to a crawl. The list of what I have to deal with goes on and on.... worst of which is that the steroids and insulin make me gain weight.

Now, instead of being the size 10 I should be, I'm a size 18 except for my waistline. That's a 24 because my heart's ability to rid me of excess water still doesn't work well and my stomach looks like I'm 8 months pregnant with a very big baby. In an effort to reduce my weight now, I graze. For you who don't know, that means I eat several small meals a day. They are usually 2 or 3 hours apart. This is the method I used to lose enough weight to qualify for my lung transplant and it works well for me. I deny myself nothing, watch my carbs because of the diabetes, and make sure I get balanced nutrition over the couse of the day. I also do physical therapy in a pool 3 times a week and maintain a positive talk to myself that this is working. I have confidence it will since it has before.

I don't whine about it. I have a very good outlook and know that, with work, I'll get where I need to go as my life goes on. I'm only writing this here because some of you obviously need a wake up call. If I could I'd shout my story from every rooftop in this country. There IS no easy way to lose weight. You CANNOT just take a pill to make it all go away. The only way to do it is to change your relationships with food, water, and exercise. That's what Oprah finally did, fyi, and it's clearly working.

Grow a brain, have some sense, honor your body. Cherish yourself enough to do what's healthy rather than just what's quick. And, just to help others out there who are fighting the same fight, smile at someone who is overweight. Our culture tends to see those people (you and me) as invisible, lazy, or worthless. Maybe if you changed your attitude about fat people, others would too and we wouldn't have young girls starving themselves to look "good".

Brazilian pill fan:
My friend, 37 yrs old, who lives in Miami, had been on the emagrece sim pills for almost 6 weeks when she lost consciousness & fainted. She had lost weight and felt good, as you stated, nobody would guess what would happen next. This happened about a month ago, she had 3 cardiac arrests, luckily, survived,as the paramedics got there fast enough, but she had to have heart surgery and her lungs are very affected too. Doctors have not said that it was because of these pills, but we all assume that this was the cause, too much coincidence. So, I please ask you all to reconsider before taking these pills. I know that dieting is not easy, I have been there myself, but your health comes first.

As for the regulation, let me speak as a Brazilian: these pills come from back alley "doctors" (who either never graduated, or lost their licenses already) and from direct sales, as in, pyramid scheme, like Herbalife.

Amphetamines cannot be purchased over the counter here. They are still used for weight loss, like in the rest of the world, but you get them through a real endocrinologist, and they do the usual checkups etc. A GP and other kinds of doctors are not allowed to prescribe amphetamines for weight loss. I had a friend who took prescription diet pills for a month, and when she went back to the doctor, she hadn't lost almost any weight (a sign she hadn't been dieting and exercising, just taking the pills) and she was not allowed a refill. So we do have lots and lots of regulations, and they work. But that doesn't mean you still can't get totally illegal stuff. I mean, narcotics aren't legal in the US either and how many people are on them?

Another thing: a real doctor will prescribe either amphetamines or antidepressives for weight loss (in case the person has compulsive overeating), but they will *never* mix both. They'd lose their licenses immediately.

Back when regular, ephedra-containing Xenadrine was still aproved in the US, ephedra had been a prescription only substance here for over 6 years. Xenadrine was sold here through the same dealers that sell illegal steroids, and Americans were still allowed to buy it legally.

I have took diet pills for years - lost/gained over the years. I have had them precribed by Drs. and over the Net - they all worked. But, everything in moderation was the key for me. I will try the Brazilian Diet Pill also - I believe taking the "down" pill in the evening is the best thing to do. as long as you can tolerate the ingredients.

ARE YOU PEOPLE READING THIS AT ALL? Sorry for the caps, but people are getting seriously ill on these pills! They are completely unregulated, back alley things. They caught a gang here in Brazil that was putting rat poison in counterfeit Herbalife a couple of years ago. Rat poison. Killed a bunch of people. The idea was, if you poison someone they'll get so sick they won't eat, and then they'll lose weight.

Also read Survivor's post. After reading all that, you want to know where to buy them? What is wrong with you?

susan, thanks for the info, but on that website the bottle dosn't say emagrece slim and that is the original, right?

jan and all others who don't understand why we want to try this product--are you fat? do you feel bad about the way you look? have you ever looked in a magizine or on tv or anywhere? the world screams BE THIN. Maybe it isn't right but after time it starts to work on you and you stop feeling like it's ok to have a few extra pounds on. My husband's friends send him pics on his phone of naked women, they aren't fat. No one wants to look at fat people. It is sad, but until people change the way they think about weight it will not change the fact that the majority of people will do anything to lose weight, even risk their lives.

I took these pills years ago...about ten, I had never looked or felt better. I lost the weight quickly, evenly and painlessly it was absolutely awesome. I didn't have any side effects and like I said, I never looked better. I used to get them at a local pharmacy here in Miami for about $50 for a month's supply...incredible right? Until the media got involved and they closed down the pharmacy and even people went to jail. I had never heard of them again up until a couple of months ago. If a weight loss pill really works, why on earth the controversy???

WOW. I was thinking about trying these pills. But I have read all of these posts, and watched the Today Show, and why would I want to take even a chance of irreversable damage to my health. It is not worth it. Sure there will be some people who can tollerate it, but it sounds like a dangerous crap shoot. I hope you all will think very hard about your family's and children, before you cause lifelong problems for THEM.
Thanks for the helpful info it the posts that helped me to just say no.

JAM: Yes, I have been fat. Really really fat. Not what teenage girls or tv think is fat, I'm talking morbidly obese, qualifying for gastric bypass and stomach stapling. So no, my lack of understanding of why you people want to risk your lives taking completely unregulated black market diet pills is not because I'm skinny and never needed to lose weight. I used to weigh 230lb at 5'2". If that is not fat, I don't know what is!

Survivor's story shows the risk that people taking LEGAL diet pills prescribed by a doctor are still facing. All of you people are facing a risk a million times bigger.

I think you should consider trying other paths: diet and exercise worked for me, and no, I didn't spend 4h a day in the gym with a personal trainer and starve to death. I work for a living and have limited time, and money is an issue too, and I eat plenty - I just changed what I eat. If that is not working, try professional help. EDiets, a counseling group like Overeaters Anonymous, following a book like Body For Life, or even seeing an endocrinologist or dietitian. If all these options are still not helping you, a doctor can prescribe an antidepressant for compulsive overeating. Because short of a psychological reason to overeat, I don't see a reason why a person cannot follow a diet, sorry.

As for feeling bad for the way I look: all the freaking time. I was obese and now I'm left with sagging *everything* (people who complain about sagging boobs don't know how lucky they are that it is just the boobs!), folds of loose skin, varicose veins from how taxing it was to be overweight, stretch marks all over from having gained weight so fast. The people on tv and magazines don't look like people on tv and magazines either, but I don't even look like most people on the street. Am I happy with the way I look? No. Was I happy when I was morbidly obese? No. But that wasn't a reason for me to risk my life just to lose weight.

I'm not criticizing people who do wanna buy these pills or other pills, just saying I don't understand. I don't understand how self-esteem can get so low that you don't even care if you live or die anymore. Cause no matter how disgusting I thought I looked, I always thought that I'm an individual who deserves to live for who I am, and not for what I look like.

I totally agree Jan. I see the posts of people who are effected for life, with problems, from taking these pills, and amazed that someone would want to take that risk. I too am 60lbs overweight. Last year I had a severe back (disk) problem and my surgeon..(jerk) put me on OXYCONTON. I had not even heard of these before. He said it was a timed release potent pain pill. Yep. I slept for 3 days, then built up, slowly a bit of a tolerance to them, but still was in a severe fog. They completely killed my appetite. I had to force myself to eat just to be able to have the energy to get out of bed. I was on these horrible pills for 2 months. I lost 45lbs. Went from a size 18 to a 10. I liked the weight loss, but the pills were doing damage to my nerves in my arms and legs. I almost loss all of the feeling in both. So I quit taking them, and got the feeling back, (thank god). And guess what? When I resumed eating normally again, I gained it all back...FAST. I could say it was a great pill to take to lose weight too. I had great results. But I would NEVER take Oxycontin again. I almost ruined my life. It is easy to pop something to lose weight, but almost always there are side effects, sometimes life altering.

Its a great thought that "Its what inside the person that matters" and although this should be the way things are its not. As long as i can remember i have been dieting and all the diets Ive done have worked. However,as soon as I stop the weight comes back. Im at the gaining stage right now and Im terrified because I just dont have the will power to stay on a diet. I know I need to make better food choices but I If could do that I would not go through this time and time again. If these dist pills work please let me know where I can order them from. Im desperate.
