Proprietary Blends: Secrets and Lies
Whenever I look at the nutritional labels on diet supplements - there is often an anomalous ingredient called a "proprietary blend". The blend lists it's ingredients but without the amounts. Independent researcher Will Brink has written some interesting notes on this:
A supplement that lists a “proprietary blend” on the bottle can be there for one of two reasons:(a) to prevent the competition from knowing exactly what ratios and amounts of each ingredient present in the formula to prevent the competition from copying their formula exactly (commonly referred to as a ‘knock off’) or
(b) to hide the fact the formula contains very little of the active ingredients listed on the bottle in an attempt to fool consumers.
Sadly, the latter use is far more common then the former. They see a long list of seemingly impressive ingredients listed in the “proprietary blend” none of which are there is amounts that will have any effects. This is commonly referred to as “label decoration” by industry insiders. The former use of the term is a legitimate way for a company of a quality formula from having the competition copy or “knock off” their formula and the latter use of the term is to scam people.

Nutritional Label of Xenadrine EFX
A mix of vitamins, minerals, and a mystical blend
...most people have neither the time or inclination to research all that info just to decide if they want to use a product and thus the many “proprietary blends” on the market that are no more then a long list of under-dosed ingredients.Xenadrine EFX is a good example. The nutritional label lists something called "Proprietary Thermodyne Complex". Which in turn contains three more proprietary blends:
Ingredients for Proprietary Thermodyne™ Complex: Tyroplex™ (proprietary blend of l-tyrosine and acetyl-l-tyrosine), Green Tea Extract (standardized for epigallocatechin gallate, caffeine and polyphenols), Seropo™ (proprietary cocoa extract standardized for PEA[phenylethylamine], tyramine and theobromine), Yerba Mate (standardized for caffeine and methylxanthines), dl-Methionine, Ginger Root (standardized for gingerols), Isotherm™ (proprietary blend of 3,3',4',5-7 pentahydroxyflavone and 3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone), DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol), Grape Seed Extract (standardized for catechins).
I have used the extra strength solo slim for 3 months and have lost 2 pounds, within a week of discontinuing the use I have put on 8 pounds plus 2 that I did not have before. I slept fine when I used this product but as soon as I stop using it the weight comes right back. anybody out there stopped using this stuff yet???
Reply3 months and I have lost 2 pounds... as soon as I stopped taking this pill I DID GAIN BACK 8 MORE Pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyI did and did not gain and the 10 people that recommended it to me all had the same results as I did. 30 lbs in 3 months and it stayed off.
You have to do your part, the pill helps you stay on your diet and promote the loss. It wont do it for you. If you return to "overeating" or poor food choices etc you will gain it back and more.
The pill helps you control your appetite and cravings. But if you eat McDonalds for lunch everyday you will not have the results. It helps fight the fatigue dieters have when they drop their caloric intake, so you continue to be active and burn calories. It supports cardiovascular effects in the way aerobic exercise does and enhances your bodies chemical processes to utilize the stores first rather than adding to them.
You have to drink the water, your body needs the added hydration to flush the toxins and byproducts of fat metabolism. You have to eat protein so you do not lose lean muscle tissue and exercise (even fast walking or swim bicycle etc)somewhat so you maintain that tissues health.
Complex carbs and stay away from fats etc. These carbs are endurance carbs and promote constant energy over the day rather than hype you up and crash.
Perhaps you could look at the way you participated in using the pills as the reason for your experience.
ReplyIf you look at the ingredients in Solo Slim, it contains, Synephrine or Citrus Aurantium. If you are not aware, Synephrine is very similar to Ephedra. So, if you are jittery or can't sleep, that's why. It's a strong stimulant. That's why they don't use caffeine. As for Ephedra, it's illegal to use, so no supplement in the US contains it.
ReplyI've been taking Solo Slim for 3 months and lost 15lbs. I do get the dry mouth and constipation. I have increased my water intake and eat about 5 prunes or include fiber in the morning which helps keep me regular. I have not experienced insomnia because I wake up early anyway, I'm usually up by 4 or 5am. I have never felt chest pressure, but I'm starting to get concerned now that i have read your testimonials. I do keep track of my blood pressure and it's been stable. I have asked several doctors at my work ( I'm an RN ) about the pills and so far they have only recommended that I eat 5 times a day in small portions, I also take multivitamins. I also started following the Weight Watchers way of eating. The only thing that I can say is that you should always consult your primary physician before starting any diet regime.
ReplyI am 30 years old and have only been taking Solo Slim for 6 days and I have lost 4 pounds exactly. I started at 175.8 and today weighed in at 171.8. I have been also doing a low carb diet while taking the pills which I think helps. The last couple days I did 2 miles on the treadmill, not a lot but something hoping it might help speed up the weight loss and tone up. I have experienced dry mouth, a little trouble sleeping and constipation. With the sleeping thing, I'm never exhausted I feel like I can just get up and be fine for the day. I would like to get down to 130's or so which I haven't been since high school! We'll see, it's worth a try :) With the holidays coming up it gives me a little inspiration to stay clear of over indulging! 11/16/08
Replyi have been taking solo slim for 5 weeks and have lost 25lbs. I love it it kills my appitite, and I used to be a very big eater. I have not noticed any side effects in fact i have been sleeping much better since taking it. I take the xtra strenght
ReplyI've been taking it for 2 months now. I've lost right at 30lbs pounds. The weight is coming off much slower now. It came off very quickly the first 3 to 4 weeks. I haven't experienced the dry mouth, which is interesting because some many have. As far as CONSTIPATION is concerned. Wouldn't it make sense, if your eating half to a third of what you used to...you will have less bowel movements. If your haveing trouble going it's probably for dietary reasons...not enought fiber, fruits and vegetables etc.
ReplyAfter reading all the comments, I wonder why anyone would further risk their health by playing "Russian Rulette" with these diet pills! I need to loose a good bit of weight, and would love to find a healthy way to get some help, but I don't think this stuff is it. I will stick to the portion control, walks, and give myself a weekly chocolate reward.
ReplyI took Solo Slim Regular Strength for a month in September 2008. I didn't have any of the above mentioned side effects. It made me urinate ALOT, which made me lose water weight. I lost about 6lbs over the course of a month. Then I started the Extra Strength, and I couldn't tell that it suppressed my appetite at all. The owner of the health store where I bought it said that the Extra Strength worked best for "A" blood types. I stopped taking it and have started the regular again just this week. This time I have experienced side effects. The very day I started it, I had to leave work with an intense migraine, and also I have had the insomnia.I have noticed a feeling of bloat in my stomach and heartburn/chest pain. And, oddly I have a metal-like taste in my mouth and am constantly smelling a very bad burnt odor.....Anyone else have any of this??!!
Replywhat are you eating while taking this ?
you are describing a metal toxicity; remember it contains a sea kelp product and other herbals which are FOODS that already have alot of the elementals you need. Are you eating alot of green? Alot of cholciferous (broccoli, cauliflower)?
Also, examine if you have coincidentally have potential mercury exposure; eating alot of tuna?
Replydangerous, some people experience a metal-like taste in their mouth, smell something odd, or see aura's right before a seizure. stay hydrated! eat something.
ReplyI started Soloslim today. My boss has been taking it and has lost 40 lbs. I really want to lose about 25 lbs and I hope and pray this works for me. I took my first pill today about 20 minutes before breakfast and I havent noticed a whole lot of anything. I know it is only day one, but I honestly am still hungry and having cravings. When I read these posts, it seems like a lot of people noticed not being hungry right from day one.
Has anyone else not felt the effects until after a few days of being on it?
I made sure to drink plenty of water today...which is good for me cause I like soft drinks wayyy too much!
Just wondering if anyone has any advice?
Lisa in North Carolina
ReplyHey Lisa,I'm in NC too, anyways,I felt results the 1st day..I couldn't eat.and when I did I could only eat 1/2 of it.It's been about a month now and I haven't weighed, but I know I've lost,I see it in my clothes fitting loose and everyone says I'm loosing, now if people who see you everyday can tell, you know the product works,I have had some side effects though, the dry mouth, restlessness at night and I tend to feel anxious.Did your boss experience these effects?Did they go away?Good luck!
ReplyI started SoloSlim back in March so I have been taking it for sometime now. I lost a load of weight and actually stopped taking it for a little while because I felt that I had reached my ideal weight. I started back on them because of a little gained weight. I have noticed that I get more irratable while I'm on the pills. I also have a hard time sleeping. On top of those I have began to grind my teeth at night as well. Just curious if anyone with the length of time similar to mine is having any issues like this?
ReplyI have been on SoloSlim for a week now..I have lost 10 lbs. I started this after my husband came home from work and told me about a co-worker who had her baby around the same time as I had mine had already lost 40lbs. I have always struggled with my weight, especially after giving birth. When I was younger I was extremly athletic but with having a family I find it difficult to get out and get exercise. When I turned 18 I started to take the easy way out by taking any diet pill out there. None of them have worked. So the day my hubby came home and told me about Soloslim I told him "yeah yeah sure..." but to my surprise they work! The first day of taking them I barely ate. It could have been because we had many errands and chores though. With all diet pills people can feel jittery, get headaches, heart palpatations etc.. but they do go away after awhile. Don't let someone elses "BAD side effects" ruin a potentially good thing for you. Not everyone are made alike.
ReplySince starting these pills I had been to my OBGYN 2 times. My blood pressure has remained the same, AND perfect...and she even commented on my weight loss.
I still am truly shocked that theres actually a pill that works. It's great for people that don't have much time during the day to exercise or that are always on the go. (Don't get me wrong- exercise is a GREAT thing and it will even help you shed that weight quicker!)
So to anyone looking to take these pills: what do you have to lose? Maybe $50 or...50lbs?
And to those already taking it...congrats! =)
I too...have had difficulty getting the lbs off since having children.I been taking it for a little over a mo now,and everyone sees the results..my jeans are almost falling off!I plan on having a tummy tuck in June ,the doc told me to loose 20-30 lbs. So,I was motivated to loose..a friend told me about the pill,I am also a skeptic.I cannot believe that I cannot eat!I have to make myself eat I stopped eating out, cause I'm wasting money. The only down sides are the dry mouth, restlessness and I've been anxious...I hope these effects go away, because I'm loving the results.I'm wondering if I should take a nite time pm?Thanks for the info!
ReplyHello,
ReplyI'm new to this blog, and I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me what they know about "SOLO SLIM" and another one called "ADVANCED ACAI"?
I'm new to the diet stuff. I'm 6'3" and around 235 lbs and would like to be down around 210lbs.
I know a woman who has been taking the SOLO SLIM since sept of 08 and she has lost 16 lbs, and say's she has experienced "0" side effects.
She said that she was told that if you still have your galbladder that you need to make sure you keep a reasonable amount of fat intake in your diet. Other than that she said there were now side effetcts at all.
As for the "ADVANCED ACAI", I have absolutely no idea.
Thx everyone.
OOPS,
Replythat should read "no side effects"...lol
I began Solo Slim about a month ago. I have lost a total of 10 pounds (my goal is 20). My husband has a degree in health and fitness, and he says that I'm losing my weight at a healthy rate. I do get the dry mouth, but that makes me drink more of the water my body needs. I've had no other side effects. I have also changed my eating habits as well as incorporating more physical activity. People can not expect overnight miracles with ANY product; a successful weight program has to include exercise and a healthy diet. My sister has lost 17 pounds in 2 months, and I have other family members just that successful who have not suffered any bad side-effects. We really like the results we have gotten from Solo Slim.
ReplyI have been taking solo slim for almost a month now. The only side effect Ive had is dry mouth. I eat healthy and exercise 3 times a week. So far I have lost about 6 pounds. You can prevent headaches by eating small amounts of food every three hours or so. Just because you are taking the pill, you should not stop eating. Remind yourself to eat even if you are not hungry. Drink plenty of water. As for the constipation...of course you arent going to need to go to the bathroom very much because you are not eating as much as you used to.
ReplyI have been taking solo slim extra strength for 2 weeks now and have lost 5 pounds. It does make you drink lots of water which is a good thing. I needed to drink more water. It does eliminate the appetite even when my stomach growls at regular meal times I do not feel hungry. I eat something healthy to keep my energy up. I have only had some of the above mentioned side effects, dizzy, feeling out of my body, buzzy feeling and irritable when I drank, took anything that had Caffeine in it.Don't drink Caffeine with this, like diet coke, coffee, tea.Do not take antihistamines with it, do not take any headache medicines that contain Caffeine with this.Do not take benedryl or sudaphed with this.If you do it will make you experience some of the side effects I have seen listed above. I do not take it everyday I take one every 3 days and it provides the same appetite suppressing for me.Drink LOTS of water.
ReplyI was so hopeful after friends lost weight with no side effects. I took it for 10 days and lost no weight. I was starting to feel nausea more and more. On the 10th day I developed a rash all over my body, which got worse and became prickly and itchy. I was up all night because I had such a stomach ache, racing thoughts and insomnia as well. I feel stupid for jumping in without doing any research. At this point I dont know if I need to see my doc (48 hours after last pill and feel no better). I've been trying to drink a lot of water to flush my system. I have to wonder, if this is what its done to my outside, what has it done to my insides?
Replyyou are likely allergic to one of the ingredients
ReplyI have been on solo slim for about a couple of weeks now,the first 4 days I lost 2 pounds..I havent checked since then how much I have lost..But I have a side affect,I have been getting realy bad hives!!!Im taking allergy meds with y solo slim so I dont have break outs? Is that ok? My doc told me maybe I should stop yaking them BUT dame I am losing weigt so I really dont want to yet! What to u think??
ReplyI have been on Solo Slim for almost one month. I have noticed an increase in thirst but nothing a little water didn't help. I am 5'7 and started at 140lbs. I was hoping to lose the extra 15 lbs of baby weight I couldn't lose. I am currently 130. So, 10 lbs down in 30 days. I have noticed a little diziness, which usually resulted from me needing food. I have found that I am eating MUCH healthier on this. Healthier portions and healthier snacks. I eat a lot of fruit, veggies, and rice cakes throughout the day and in between meals to keep my body fueled. I have had a little constipation, but with a little added fiber it went right away. I really like this product. I ordered another bottle and will probably just take one every other day for the next month and be done. Not only have I lost weight, but I have lost inches as well. 2 inches off my belly *which is really where I needed it after having my second child.
Let m know if you have any questions.
ReplyHey,I started on my 2nd bottle of Solo Slim Extra Strength.I too have the horrible dry mouth, all I do is drink.I feel jittery and anxiuos too.I have lost weight, love the results. Will these side effects subside? Thanks for the info on the flax seed,I been having a problem w/constipation since taking them too.
Replyi started Solo SLIM about two weeks ago and have lost 12 lbs. i have had some effects like dry mouth exc. but nothing that i cant deal with. However i have had some mood swings and i dont know why. it all started when i started taking this pill. it may just be because i eat alot less now ( no more then 700 cal a day) but i dont know. i also forget to eat. anyone else have this problem> other then that i think solo slim really works 15lbs in two weeks!!!!! 10 more to go!!!!
ReplyHas anyone stopped taking Solo Slim and gain the weight back while regulating diet and increasing exersise?
ReplyHey Melissa,I haven't stopped alltogether..I go 3 days on and 3 days off.I noticed that my eating habits remain the same as when I'm on the pills and I work out at least 4 days,I'm still losing, although I feel that my body is imune to the pills,I don't even get dry mouth anymore.I suggest that if you start taking ss take reg 1st then upgrade to ultra..so the body doen't get used to them.Good luck!
ReplyI lost 20 lbs. on star slim extra strength.New formula with carb blocker hasn't suppresed my appetite at all Im gaining weight quickliy.Hungry all the time. Why the change and why isnt it working anymore?I spent a lot of money and got no results very disappointed.Im looking for something else to suppress my appetite!!!!
Replyhas anyone had any problems with thier hand cramping while taking solo slim,
ReplyI took solo slim diet pill for three days. Before taking the pill, i did the research to see what were the side effects from it. The only negetive side effects i found was nausea and insomnia for first couple days. The first day i took it thats exactly what i felt... along with irregular heart rate and rapid heart rate. I have never had any problems with my heart before. As soon as i would start moving around it felt like my heart was about to jump out of my chest. I developed chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath high blood pressure and my suger dropped from lack of food even though i was not forgetting to eat. I stopped usage just after three days and i was still experiencing chest pain. My sister on the other hand, took the pill for two weeks and didnt have any side effects like mine, but she did develope difficultly swallowing. She lost a good amount of weight without exercise but i dont reccomend it to anyone with blood pressure problems or history in the family with heart problems. Good luck on the weigh loss!
ReplyI have been taking Solo Slim extra strength for three days now. My first day I noticed I was never hungry and forgot to eat. The second day I noticed the dry mouth and I wasn't constipated at all, in fact as soon as I ate anything it went right through me. I noticed I was really tired throughout the day though. I have expirienced the insomnia really bad, I feel like I don't sleep at all, but today on the third day I feel energized somehow. I took my pill with water this morning and got really nausiated until I ate, then I felt just fine. I have already lost 3 lbs...I think I'll stick with it for a wk and see if the insomnia disapates...
ReplyI went ahead and ordered Solo Slim even after reading about its side effects, some potentially serious. I was so intent on losing weight that I figured those side effects wouldn't happen to me. Day l -- I experienced a tightness in my chest, and had difficulty breathing. I happened to be visiting my doctor that day for another reason and mentioned what I was feeling. I didn't mention the diet pills. He took a breathing test, and I rated high on the scale. I had Solo Slim in my system, but only for a few hours. On day 3, I was experiencing increasing chest constriction and very labored breathing. My breathing test revealed I was at the low end of the breathing test--less than half of what I was on Day 1. After checking the ingredients in Solo Slim, citrus aurantium synephrine was targeted as the potential culprit. Please take the time to read about synephrine at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synephrine. Two adverse effects noted are cadiovascular and respiratory difficulties. I know many folks blogged and mentioned the same difficulties. It's more than likely the synephrine. Remember..this is not an FDA-approved product. PLEASE take this seriously--don't risk your health to lose weight. My Solo Slim bottle of 27 remaining pills is now in the trash. Please don't do what I did and ignore the warnings from others on this site.
ReplyI am on my seventh month of taking Solo Slim. I have lost 64 pounds without changing the content of my diet or exercising. Side effects, dry mouth and drank more water to overcome it and still do. Constipation, and drank prune juice when necessary to combat it. I have lowered my blood pressure by loosing the amount of weight that I have. I have better cognitive function and recall then I did when I was over 270lbs. I am 5'11" and 47 years old. I cycled off and on the solo slim taking a week off after being on for 60 days. On my third 60 day cycle, I did a bottle of the extra strength and then went back to the regular strength.
Everyone is different in how their body will work or not work with the product. Seek medical advice and check up before starting any supplement, nutritional or exercise program. The only FDA approved Diet pill I am aware of is Alli, I may be wrong. I tried it and did not like it. I like hydroxy cut (Sp?) but I got too jittery for my liking.
I am not able to discount what other have reported of severe medical issues they claim to be caused by Solo Slim but be informed and ask for proof showing medical findings that any product facing blame for a medical issue is the culprit. No, not from the poster, get it from an actual medical organization or the FDA and not what someone posts as being from one. Educate yourself anything in excess is dangerous to include the consumption of water.

ReplyOne thing to remember when browsing so called review sites is every supplement has things wrong with them but one they recommend or is their choice of 2009 you are on a deceptive advertising site for that particular product.
For what its worth.
ReplyI was reading all comments about solo slim. I'm 36 years old and I weight 162 lbs. I would like to loose weight. I'm seriously thinking about take solo slim, but after all I read I'm not sure at all.
Replymy friend and I started taking Solo Slim extra strength 2 months ago. we walk 5 miles every other day, watch what we eat, and we have both lost 40 pounds each and we feel great. only side effects we've had was the dry mouth which causes us to drink more water, which is a good thing anyhow. I talked to a few neutritionist? (spelling?) and was told extra strength was for those needing to lose 50 or more pounds, which my friend and I clearly needed and I have 30 pounds more I need to loose, she has 80 more to go. I've not felt dizzy or weird from the Solo Slim at all. it may just depend on the individual and how their system takes it.
Replyoh and if those of you who take solo slim get constipated? take Flax Seed oil... the two go hand in hand.. I take the flax seed oil capsules cause the straight oil would make me gag otherwise... I take about 4-5 capsules a day, which you can take alot more cause flax seed oil is the healthiest thing on the planet...our bodies need it.
ReplyI have been taking Solo Slim for 1 1/2 months now, and I have lost 35 lbs, I am a recovered drug addict, I have been clean for about 4 years, I was addicted to meth. I have been doing exactly what the directions say, take one pill in the morning and eat a healthy breakfast 20 minutes afterwards, I have been eating breakfast lunch and dinner-all healthy! And drinking lots of water! After stopping my meth use, I swelled up huge, and didnt have the energy, or strenght to drop the weight, I am 31, I am now down to the size I feel comfortable at, so I plan on not buying another bottle of Solo Slim, and trying to keep my eating habbits the same, I have started taking one pill on monday and one on Tuesday, skiping wednesday, and a pill on thursday and friday, and skiping Saturday and sunday! I will ween myself of this pill, because alls it is, is leagal meth, and there are long term effects on everything we take, down to carrots help your eyesight, remember you are what you eat! It can be a great kickstart, but to depend on it would be an addiction, and you would be co-dependent! I have had some kidney pain and throat irratation, along with fast heart rate, and similar symtoms as everyone else, these are the symptoms of speed, I know the feeling all to well! I wouldnt make it a life long habbit, in fact I would not recommend anyone take this product longer than 3 months! That's how similar it is to meth, its just legal! Like (heroin and oxy's or methodone)theres (Solo-slim and Meth! Drugs are where the money is at, everything is legal in discuise don't be fooled by the distributers, the drug dealers on the street care more about there consumers than the manufacters, and distributers of legal supplements! It's barrowed time useing any substance, make sure you don't depend on anything to feel better about your self!
ReplyBeen taking solo slim for about a week. I have to say this is a PRO review. This is the only diet pill I've taken that has not made me feel dizzy or have my heart race. Because of this I avoided diet pills for a number of years but a friend's pro review made me reconsider.
I think this stuff is amazing! In fact, I have to say the opposite of those who complained of insomnia, this pill has finally got me on a regular sleeping schedule and I'm up at 6 a.m. on the weekends refreshed rather than lying in bed half awake til 10.
The appetite suppressant also works wonders. I'm never hungry. Still, I'm forcing myself to eat every 4-5 hours (small healthy snacks) even though I'm not hungry and I drink a ton of water a day to help the pills process. I also limit myself to one can of diet cola a day (I used to drink a lot more!).
