Everybody's Getting Fat?

A number of media outlets are reporting the results of a new study into obesity trends:

In a lengthy study, many people who had a normal body mass index (BMI) in middle age eventually became overweight, and some became obese.

Consider these before-and-after results:
Between a tenth and a quarter became overweight in just four years.
More than half became overweight in 30 years.

Without getting into the details here - the trend is that people are getting heavier as they get older. The study measured only white people, and used BMI as an indicator of weight problems. In all likelihood, these people also lost muscle tone as they aged (unless engaged in strength training) - making the situation even worse. BMI would still measure the same, but body fat percentage would have grown.

What can we learn from this?

It's very easy to gain weight in a society that is sedentary and that overeats foods high in sugar and fat. Without doubt - a lifestyle of exercise and eating in moderation must occur if you are to maintain weight during (and beyond) middle age.

i totally agree with this. even though it's not at all a pleasant information.. well for me.. coz it means that we have to work our butt to stay healthy and fit or else we'll be obese and eventually die early.. its just soo hard for me to do this excercise, most people are too busy to even think of what they are eating for their own health... =_=

Yeah, it takes a lot of effort to stay fit and at the proper weight in our society. Not to mention the fact that as you get older you have more against you...slower metabolism, less muscle tone, arthritis, etc. I think it happens most often to those people that can eat "whatever they want" when they are younger and think they can continue to do so when they are older. You just have to be careful, that's all.

For all your problems such as obesity and other "diseases",prevention is defenitly the key. Now there might be some of you actually taking the time to read what I have to say that already might be in a jam with health problems. I thank you for that and my grammatical error. Yea I'm not perfect. So what? LOL WEll anyways. Maybe, just maybe, you could take this into consideration. What are we? We are adults...I think..lol Our children do what we do, and there children will do what they do. We need to stop this cycle of not making our health our first priority. Yes society has changed. Yes its hard for us to take care of ourselves, with our schedules, with work and what not. Well if we don't start, who will? We need to show an example. I am. How about you? "Everyone's getting fat?" Everyone? I don't think so. Saying that everyone is this, or doing that, would make people believe its ok. NO, this is not ok, not normal, and is preventable. Go ahead and look at the rest of the world, and compare their health to our health. Way way way I'll say it again I swear! WAYYYY! I told you so!,better than ours. Deny the I. Remember this too.. "If something's broke, fix it. If you don't know how, learn. If you're not willing to learn, don't complain about it. If it can't be fixed, then accept it, and move on."

'This week's new miracle diet' One definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things over and over again and expect different results.

Obesity, as well as eating no more than we need, choosing foods that help keep the blood sugar even, backed by an optimal intake of nutrients that help to stabilise blood sugar, along with exercise will assist to lose weight by stabilizing the appetite and burning fat.

We ourselves the consumers must share blame for a nation of ever expanding waistlines we demand instant service, perfect fruit, ready made meals and the supermarket chains are only supplying our demand!

Ya know, often when I start feeling like a failure because I have gained 10 lbs(ok, maybe 20) I do find that to make myself feel better I look at the majority of the people I see out and about. Especially teenage girls, who seem to be getting larger by the momemt, and I tell myself, Im not that bad, look at how big they are! Then I remember weight loss isnt just about looking better, it's a matter of healthiness and taking care of our bodies so we can live a long life. I think we forget that.

I read somewhere that supposedly "everyone" will be fat by 2025 or something like that. I doubt that will happen, as there will always be a percentage of the population that DOES take care of themselves. Americans want everything to be so effortless. Losing weight isn't effortless, so a lot of people just do what's easy and eat like crap and don't work out. It's the same way with debt in our society...a LOT more people are in debt than ever before. Same principle...it's not easy to save money and credit cards are everywhere. Pretty soon only a very few people will be rich or thin, and those will be the people that put some discipline into their lives and delay some instant gratifications.

It is sad but true that this obesity pandemic will only get worse. I project that we will see obesity rates of 30-40% by 2025. Our government and healthcare system is not prepared or interested in helping, and the solution to the problem is too costly to initiate. Exercise is the only possible way to curb the growth and most people simply hate it. I fight the good fight every day in my training centers in Los Angeles. If you don't exercise, your not living.

Nicki: No, 101 pounds is not overweight for 5'2". It is UNDERweight. Your BMI is 18.6. The recommended weights are between 20-25 BMI, so between 109lb and 136lb.

I’ve managed to save up roughly $72567 in my bank account, but I’m not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot

Remember when Coca-cola changed their recipe for a short time? Then, they changed it back? It was then that they touched on stem cells.
