Good Vibrations
NBC5i.com has an (advertising?) feature titled "Good Vibrations Help Tone Muscle, Melt Fat".
"Power Plates" vibration machines move your body in three different directions as you stand on a vibrating platform and hold a vibrating handle. The result is muscle strength, flexibility and bone loss prevention.By holding poses for up to a minute, '"You can get a total workout in 15 to 30 minutes," personal trainer Kay Smith said.

Power Plate my5
Vibrate your way to fitness?
The article links to a study showing the benefits of the machine. However upon reading the abstract of this study - the actual health improvements are improved gait and body balance in elderly people.
So what's the point of this post?
There are many machines and gadgets that do offer some kind of health benefit for some people - however these benefits are grossly exaggerated. I find it difficult to believe that standing on vibrating exercise machine will "melt fat". I find it even more difficult to believe that it can be compared to an 800 pound squat.
Important note...
ReplyDr. Zilahy is a chiropractor NOT a MD or Medical Doctor.
I believe an appropriate analogy for this is a Chiiropractic practitioner can and will call themselves a doctor....just as a Scientologist...says they're a member of a "religion".
CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!
Dear Lloyd,
Your credibility has just been seriously questioned by your comments using an analogy of Chiropractic and Scientology. Indeed CAVEAT EMPTOR to your advice!!!
I would like to know what makes an MD more qualified to comment on whole body vibration?
Personally, I have a mechanical engineering background, I am qualified to testify in the Connecticut judicial system as an expert in biomechanics and have privileges at St. Mary’s Hospital which is affiliated with Yale.
I think readers should know Chiropractic is the largest, most regulated, and best recognized of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) professions. (Meeker, Haldeman; 2002; Annals of Internal Medicine)
There are more than 60,000 active chiropractic licenses in the United States. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands officially recognize chiropractic as a health care profession.
In 2002, approximately 7.4 percent of the population used chiropractic care – a higher percentage than yoga, massage, acupuncture or other diet-based therapies. (Tindle HA, Davis RB, Phillips RS, Eisenberg DM. Trends in use of complementary and alternative medicine by US adults: 1997-2002. Altern Ther Health Med. 2005 Jan-Feb;11(1):42-9.)
Doctors of Chiropractic undergo at least four years of professional study at one of 16 chiropractic colleges accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic must pass national board examinations and become state-licensed prior to practicing.
In national surveys, patients patients routinely rate Doctors of Chiropractic highly in skill, manner, and explanation of treatment.
Doctors of Chiropractic provide care in hospitals and other multidisciplinary health care facilities.
Chiropractic is the third largest doctoral-level health care profession after medicine and dentistry.
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is concerned with human health and disease processes. Doctors of Chiropractic are physicians who consider man as an integrated being and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, psychological, nutritional, visceral, emotional and environmental relationships and are trained in diagnosis so they may treat patients effectively and make timely referral to appropriate health care providers.
Having said that, you still haven't answered my questions of the previous blog.
ReplyHere's support for the chiropractor! Mine has helped me more than my MD!
ReplyDr ?? Z it wasn't Lloyd Shaw who made those comments.
ReplyI apologize. This is the first time I ever used a blog. I am so sorry! I now know how to reference.
ReplyWhat exactly Dr. Z has'nt Lloyd responded to regarding your previous post?
ReplyI've been skeptical of this whole WBV thing and Lloyd has given me and other board users some very practical hands-on advice. Surely he isn't responsible for you to make sure your turbo thing works, or how to build it. Geeze.
While KG can be a blowhard...
I think he brought up some points to consider. Chiropractic is alternative medicine...my hunch is alternative to real medicine. I'm sure it works in many cases, just like traditional shamanic rituals will also work on occasion.
And shame on you KG for linking Chiropactic with Scientology. I LOVE Tom Cruise(:
Dr.Z....
No problem. I understand a mistake like that can be made easily on a Furum. I can assure you i will NEVER use a seudonym.
I will also never put down a medical proffesional. After all I am a Mortician. Who am I to speak ?
KG's presence on this blog is a mystery. He has never offered any answers or real questions.
My comment was not just directed to this blog. And was to stop such behaviour getting out of hand. Alot of people are using this blog as a reference fot WBV, so we should take that on board and act accordingly.
To explain the full 9 parts I would need to write a book. This is not the place.
I have also given away knowledge in the past, with it being used incorrectly , to quickly , all in the name of the marketing dollar.
One particular individual stole a partial plan and proceeded to manufacture it. Of coarse it didnt work very well , but more importantly his lack of knowledge was just plain dangerous.
I will not repeat that mistake. The knowledge I choose to part with can only be grasped by those who are already have sufficnt knowledge.
Your credentials are impessive and you have a better background to be involved in this process ( developing safe WBV protocols ) we have all started.
ReplyHi everyone,
Sorry to interrupt such an interesting discussion, but I'm announcing my resignation from Hypergravity.
I'm not going to discuss the circumstances surrounding my decision to leave, but suffice it to say I left of my own free will for reasons of conscience.
From now on when I post on this board it will be under my own name.
Best regards,
Christopher
ReplyThank you Lloyd for your comments. When I became involved with WBV I went to Univ. of Connecticut's Medical Library and downloaded the worlds peered reviewed liturature. After exhaustive research I found that the Turbosonic was the only device that delivered frequencies that could be controlled in the 8- 11 Hertz range. By EMG studies those frequencies stimulate the majority of the trunk and leg muscles.
ReplyBy training one osteoporotic individual for 6 months, using low frequencies I have scientifically demonstrated a 12 % improvement in bone density. According to the head of OB/GYN at St. Mary's Hospital "that is off the Richter scale" We are now in the process of doing a formal study.
You can read more at http://www.healthyvibration.com/WBV%20web/osteoporosis.htm. As compared to taking medications, the side effect of low frequency training resulted in stronger legs, improved balance and an increase of wellbeing!
Christopher,
ReplyLeaving for "reasons of conscience." I recently purchased a Hypergravity from you. I posed some specific questions to you regarding your claims on your web site. Please explain yourself.
Christopher,
ReplyYou are well aware that I am in the middle of buying a machine from Hypergravity and you were in touch with me. I also want to know more about your "reasons of conscience" as you put it. If somehting's badly wrong with the business or the product, then you should say so openly.
Regards, Laura
Well, Well, Well...
Looks like Lloyd's endorsement of the Hypergravity unit was the kiss of death for that outfit.
Nothing like a mortician's endorsement for a wellness product to get the good times rolling eh?
I actually looked into their units and saw a lot of value. It's a pity. Their unit was built like a tank and was the oft overlooked gem of a find in the industry.
Lloyd...please endorse lousy units. If the Hypergravity is going to go by the wayside, your chirping about it could'nt have helped matters.
BTW...I've never worked for PowerPlate...just worked out on them. I like PowerPlate because they are'nt going away, and there is a lot to be said for that.
From what I hear....their new unit is to be released early 07'.
ReplyKG
Until you really come clean on who you are, what your motives are, and answer the specific questions that have been posed to you that you reply with defensive, personal attacks, nobody will take you seriously.
ReplyKG, I have heard privately from Christopher about his reasons to leave Hypergravity. I will not divulge his explanation as he obviously wishhes to keep it private, but it appears to have nothing to do with their products. And if I may say, you seem to have a rather malicious view of pretty much everyone.
ReplyThere we go, just to set the record straight. So I shall be looking forward to getting my Hypergravity machine and get lots of good results off it! A good night to every one from London.
KG.....
Power-Plates "new" unit is just a "mini me" copy of its present machine. And they are still desperatly trying out new isolation systems for their present unit. After having lots of resonace problems.
I still have good contacts within Power-Plate Int. And non of them are impressed.
TO ALL...
Hypergravity has lost a salesperson , not a machine. His reasons for leaving was nothing to do with the present product.
But here is a warning shot across everbodies bow , my endorsements are not blanket endorsements. So keep it safe and reliable . Or else.
ReplyI'm glad Hypergravity is still around. I believe they make a great product that will last a lifetime...a little bit on the loud side, but hey so is a Stones concert.
This is a great forum because those involved and interested in WBV can find out this sort of information and make informed purchasing/use/technique decisions. Can it ruffle feathers at times? Of course as will any lively debate; but the information to be gleaned from such discussions is valuable and cuts through all the marketing mumbo jumbo. It's all about a free exchange of ideas and comments.
In regards to the PowerPlate new model Lloyd...why not wait to see when it is released before you put it down? I'm looking forward to see what the new model will bring.
ReplyKG....
Dont fool yourself. Your "comments" and "free exchange or ideas" in this forum has had no positive consequence to the forwarding and understanding of WBV that I can see.
Instead your constant support of PowerPlate despite their lack of integrity does nothing but help other conmen and PowerPlate salespeople.
So your support of Hypergravity should be taken as an insult.
I have viewed the new MY5 Powerplate. And on the outside it looks ok. But so did the PP Next Generation. And look what happened there.
ReplyTRIX....
ReplyPilates should NOT be simulated on a Vibration Platform. This is the domain of "fad" trainers who are trying to mix up disciplines to make up for lack of knowledge in this area.
COMMENT ABOUT DOING PILATES ON VIBRATION PLATFORMS.
ReplyTRAINERS WITH LACK OF KNOWLEDGE COME ON THATS NOT NICE LOOK AT BOXERISE THAT MADE SOMONE MILLIONS.
I AM A VIBRATION TRAINER AND I USE PILATES, FREE WEIGHTS, YOGA, BOXING, KICKBOXING, AND MORE ON THE VIBROGYM.
AS FOR THE NEW POWERPLATE ITS THE SHAPE THAT PUTS ME OFF AND THE WIDTH, SO ALL MY PYLOMETRICS ARE FAR EASIER WHEN THEY NEED TO BE HARD. STEPPING FROM LEFT/RIGHT TO KICKBOX, PEOPLE ARE MORE AWARE OF SLIPPING OFF.
Peter.....
do you understand involuntary reflexes cannot be activated during a voluntary reflex.
Essentially you turn the machine off while you are moving. Why would you want to do that ?
Also the error rating goes up with movement on the plates , which puts your customers at undue risk of joint injury.
The pressure must remain at the girth of the muscle at all times for the machines to work at their peak and at its safest. Every inch away from this angle takes energy from the equation .
( apart from "Physio" and "Peak " programs , which are both short term )
Remember....Marketing and Zoology are also two distinctive disciplines .
ReplyIf anyone has specific questions about WBV, I'll still be happy to chime in from time to time. However, I am really not at liberty to discuss any aspect of my former relationship with Hypergravity.
Regards,
Christopher
ReplyChristopher,
ReplyWhat exactly occured with Hypergravity?
I went to their website at wholebodyvibes.com
and it is down. After some looking around I found Hypergravity.net and information on their regarding the company that looked like a retard put together with a "Webpages for Dummies" book. I've heard much of the product, but with a public presentation like that...I can't help but wonder as to the well being of their organization. I'm considering the Hypergravity home unit or that new Power Plate My5 someone above spoke of.
Thanks and all the best..
Raj
You can still go to hypergravity.net.
ReplyOh, sorry ... see now that you did that.
ReplyChristopher,
ReplyHi! Are you still in SoCal? Are you still interested in being professionally involved in the WBV world? Would love to meet up if you are.
Drop me an email: nickolachi@gmail.com with your best contact number & time to ring.
I'm based in Santa Monica
Have a perfect day
Raj,
ReplyWhat specifically are you looking to achieve on a WBV unit.
I am shortly launching a new technology that will have 6 initial models all with specific applications.
I look forward to speaking.
Hallo to the Forum and especially Lloyd .
1.I checked out the my5 machine and i believe that is the old domestic powerplate but more elegant. I believe that technicaly nothing got better.
2.At the pivital vibration section i tried Maxuvibe but it was not such good as Galileo Sport
3.At the linear vibration section i tried the Fit-X machine and my opinion is the worst for training. So i agree with Lloyd that this machine is only for therapy.
If anyone used Galileo for training please share the experience .
ReplyThanks Nick.
ReplyBut I will be purchasing either a Hypergravity or PowerPlate.
I want an all round workout unit. As far as having 6 choices each with a specific application...best of luck.
But with all the kak offerings in this field (ahem, Dr. Z. Turbo-whatever) I just need to purchase a unit from a solid player with more than an email address currently.
Thank You for caring and sharing...
Raj
Agreed Raj.
Most folks can't go backn'forth straining to decide if they want soup or salad with their entre' let alone 6 choices of WBV machines. Love to see that sales process((:
I think the success PowerPlate has achieved thus far in leading the field of also rans is largely due to their simplicity of offerings and crisp marketing. Which leads me to the MY5...just a reskinned Personal unit. Beautifully reskinned-so it is sure to be a big seller..but still same ol'-same ol'. You'd be well served with the Hypergravity home unit...they could sell it for quite more actually.
But this MY5 thing aside...PowerPlate does have the new Next G coming....and I for one...am very interested in seeing what new twists they bring to the already best selling professional unit in the world.
Yours in WBV,
ReplyKG
Kg...
Considering Power-Plate are just a marketing company , I would expect their image to be everything and more.
And Power-Plates sales are only matched by their breakdown rate.
Not what I would exactly call "Professional".
ReplyKG - Do you eat Italian food at a Steak restaurant? As is the case in many 'moderate' restaurants - there is a full range of offerings to help satisfy all tastes... Some Pasta, seafood, poultry...
If you want the best you go to a speciality outfit, ie you go to an Italian restaurant for the best Italian food.
Or KG do you use a 5-iron to drive off the tee on a par-5?
WBV is only just at the start of its true development and pathway to realize its potential. There is a need for continued research, and development of the most appropriate frequencies, amplitudes to ensure the most beneficial response in the huge target populations that can receive massive benefit through WBV training and therapy.
Hence there is an enormous need for differing equiptment appropriate to the specific needs of that target group, and their exact requirements. Of course, only if you want to get the best results.
(Golf originated with one club, and matured to specialist 'woods' and 'irons' in response to the demands for more accurate results.
Let's keep at the head of the curve!
This forum is designed to progress WBV forward. No-one person has all the answers. Positively we look to share experience and uncover further knowledge to progress this field forward to ensure better and better results for more and more people. Doing our little bit to make they world a healthier, happier planet.
KG - I look forward to seeing you galvanize yourself with a more positive and inclusive attitude. You have excellent experience with WBV - shine with your knowledge and invigorating comment.
ReplyHi Everyone, this is indeed a very interesting discussion, glad i found it!
Lloyd, you are obviously very well-versed in Vibration Technology and your studio seems to be doing very well! I really do not understand your endless bashing of Power Plate. No matter what you say, they must be doing something right to be the undisputed market leader in this field. If their breakdown rate is as high as you said, IMHO, it would have gone bust by now.
Anyway, I just feel if you are really concern about the future of this industry, go on prove to everyone that what you are doing is the right thing, there is no need for you to worry about Power Plate. If they are as unethical as you made them out to be, sooner or later they will be out of business, with or without your bashing.
FYI, I am just a consumer very keen to purchase one of these machine.
Pete
ReplyPete Nik....
I am standing up for my industry and those of us who are NOT just marketers. If that means I appair to be "bashing" Power-Plate. Then so be it. I was not expecting a Christmas card from them anyway.
True they are not the only company hurting our reputation, but they ARE the worst. And hense the best to make an example of.
If you think ethics dont count in todays market place you must be very sheltered or you have not been burnt by.
As I told Power-Plate in my injunction, that if they explained their actions, or put out a public apology it will cease.
My companies success in no way changes my position on this.
At any time they can take me up on my offer. I believe this is fair.
ReplyWho is an undisputed market leader? Any company can make this kind of claim.
Because of this blog I have been doing some looking around and I do have a couple of questions:
1. Why do powerplate have awards on their website older than the release of the PowerPlate New Generation?
2. Why do powerplate have research on their website from another machine (vibro-gym)and yet claim it to be from PowerPlate New Generation?
I am wading through mountains of information but these issues did stand out to me personally. I don't buy on looks alone.
KG - sorry but so far you haven't offered any answers to any questions posted on the blog. It would seem that the only reason you are on this blog is the same reason all of us are on... to actually "learn" about vibration training. How about you start answering some of the questions posted on this blog instead of just these other guys?
ReplyHi,
Glad I found this site... I have been looking at WBV since 1999 when I was studying sportsmed in my physyotherapist education. After beeing recomended some litterature from my instructor I have followed the development of this training, reading all of the medical litterature of it and testing some of the machines. Had the opportunity to test Powerplate and Xrsize for six months beside each other in my job. The PP working twodimensional as I see it not 3 as the unbalanced engines placed becide one another cannot put energy worth naming 3 dimensional... The Xrsize works linear (strikt) and with an amplitude of 3mm with more powerfull engines. The results were wery interresting as the Powerplate i lowmode was wery "nice" giving good massageeffekt but in high mode not giving the higher training effekt but a feeling appering that the joints could not cope to the lateral vibrations. The Xrsize fokusing on vertikal effekt gave an extreem trainingeffekt but was not as comfortable in the massagefeelingaspekt (long word). Wery good results in balance, functional strenght and "wellbeeing" (excuse my english)with the linear vertikal machine. The PP gave good trainingeffekt but when you compare and must pick one for training the choice is simple. For a beautycenter that want the training too feel nice and smooth the choice is PowerPlate or any other machine that works like a washingmachine but then I would not recommend the highmode amplitude in PP or a machine that has a high amplitude and powerfull engines. But WBV training needs power to be WBV. Some machines should be named CMV CalfMuscle Vibration or FV Foot Vibration and they feel nice in those areas but you don´t get what they talk about in the litterature. You get what you pay for. This is gravitytraining and we use vertikal vibrations to stimulate muskles and tendons by reflexes. The same way as I did as a elite volleyballplayer jumping down from hights. (Didn´t jump into the sidewalls) We do the same her but many times/s in a much smaller amplitude causing the same effekt. You want the force to come straight into the joints (close chain) to make the joints and muskles to work as they were ment from the beginning. Talked to the men i charge of www.xrsize.se and they have talked to mr Bosco himself about vertikal vs ocillatory vibrations. Bosco was wery clear in their dialog about that the vibrations should be vertikal and not by any way sideways as the joints were made to take the Newtonforce this way...
The most interesting thing that I experiensed was that using both machines gave the best results... And how is that??? I think that the massageeffekt is not to be ignored and espessially when you train hard with a machine like the Xrsize or Nemes.
Good luck to you all!!!
ReplyClaes M....
Was the Power-Plate a "classic" ( metal ) or Next Generation. The classic was 2D. When they went to plastic construction it created sideways movement duing its "flexing". This is a fault in the design.
I love your CMV ( Calf Muscle Vibration ) comment. Priceless but so true. Do I have permission to use it ?
Dr Boscos research was good but limited in the use for developing machines for the everage - overweight person. As raising vertical jump height was his main target.
ReplyWhich I personally dont get much call for.
The PP was NG. Use the CMV. A lot of cheap shit is making this serious training unserious. What do you get call for if not musclequality, neuromuscular control, proprioception, power and wellbeeing? The Bosco test was/is made to test vertical jumphight but the man was serious about more than that. Before he passed away he was working with a huge bonedensitystudy if I´m not totally missinformed. and a lot of his studies are not focused on vertical jumphight but strenght/power and hormonal effekts. Boscos studies lack a lot of important issues but WBV wouldn´t be what it is today if it wasn´t for him?
ReplyHit me!
Claes
Yes I agree , he fathered the industry in the right direction . I just got a bit frustrated I suppose at the repeatition of studies already proven positive .
ReplyMy opinion though may be slightly clouded by my belief that obesity/type 2 dia/septic ulcers etc.. should have taken priority.
And I´d like to se some studies about WBV and hyperactivity like in ADHD. WBV and any effektive training can normalize the hormonebalance. In ADHD espessially serotonine and dopamine are known not to be in balance. The medicine is making a lot of money in this buisness (amfetamine) but how much money are spent on the real problem?
I agree that research in WBV / type 2 diabetes would be of high value...
My experience of WBV and type 2 diabetes is that you have to be careful in the beginning but most of the cases I´ve seen in some grade have been normalized.
Training in type 2 diabetes is very important and you don´t get much more effektive training than WBV.
Septic ulcer is not my game, but I´ve seen some cases on some persons with constipation...
ReplyStarting to train WBV and also having gastric problems emptied their intestines from a lot of excrement with a long history in the abdomen(maybe to much information?). This must be good??
Hi
ReplyI am a physiotherapist concentrating on rehab.(IN South Africa) Anecdotal evidence suggests that powerplate is effective for children with low motor tone and ADDH. We also see good results with functional improvements in ADL of children with raised tone.As medical funding is getting less for treatment of backache, we also cut down on visits or recurrences. Patients tone beautifully, but unless they eat less, they do not lose weight. I am, however moving to Australia sometime next year. Can someone tell me the cost of the commercial powerplate in AU$, as it sells for R82 000 here in South Africa.
Thanks!!!!
