Flabby Arnold: Inspirational

For the last few years, pictures of a "flabby" Arnold Schwarzenegger have been floating around the Web. Like a pervasive urban myth - some feel that the photos are faked - while others can't believe their eyes. Whatever the truth is - Arnold is 57 years old now, and paparazzi are notorious for getting photos of people at their worst.

Paparazzi Strikes Again
Shown in the Daily Mail
in March 2005.
No matter what you think of Schwarzenegger's acting or political career - when it comes to bodybuilding - he is worthy of respect. Arnold was one of the most influential and inspiring figures in the bodybuilding community.

So what about the flab? If the pictures are accurate - then it just goes to show that Schwarzenegger is not a complete genetic freak - but that he is human, and muscle atrophy happens to anyone who ceases resistance training. There are comments in the tabloid press:

Friends say the Austrianborn former strongman has never fully recovered his once-startling physique since an operation to repair faulty heart valves in 1997.

Critics blame the cardiac problems on his admitted use of steroids while bulking up for bodybuilding contests 20 years ago.

prior to filming T3
The thing is, just about every magazine ad, every infomercial, and every picture we see of a body builder is just a snapshot. It is a snapshot at a single point in time - taken at their absolute peak.

When I decided to start going to the gym to lift weights - my work colleagues scorned the idea saying that "the moment I stopped lifting weights - the muscle would turn to flab". Now of course muscle doesn't transform to fat, but muscle does burn up, and fat does increase. If you stop lifting weights (and other forms of exercise), but fail to reduce your food intake accordingly... well... on comes the flab, and down goes the muscle tone. Quite depressing really.

However seeing the pictures of flabby Arnold shows that it can happen to the best of us, and that big muscles are fleeting things. Somehow that makes me feel better about myself.

Wow, it is so amazing how Arnold can get so flabby, like he did in that picture prior to T3, and then suddenly build up his muscle just like that. It is definitely inspirational.

Off-season competitors are usually flabbier than they are when they are hard-core training. It's really amazing how much you can whip your body into shape.

This is a great topic. I'm facing muscle atrophy of my right leg due to ACL surgery, and there is a long haul to recovery, I know. I'm a HUGE fan of Arnold, not for his movies necessarily but mostly for him as a competitive bodybuilder, he was awesome. To see him in the photo's in that shape is somewhat sad, but understandable. Nothing lasts forever, I always believe that the key to stay healthy and in shape, is to keep on moving. The key to increasing mass and strength, is to keep lifting weights, even as we grow older.

I know that everybody ages, but this picture really is shocking - only because Arnie is an icon and as an icon he'll always be thought of as he was in his heyday.
Its also worth noting that in the case of T3 - its amazing what can be done to make someone look younger with CG(I was going link to an article about how they do this from wired or newscientist I think - but I couldn't find it - I might have imagined it also)

I think you can see in the top photo that a major problem there is loose skin too. Not that he isn't flabby; but there is as much loose skin as in a formerly obese person, probably because he was so huge. In the bottom photo, flab-wise, he is not any flabbier than most men his age.

WHY DOES THE GENERAL PUBLIC, OR MAYBE IT IS THE PRESS, FEEL THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO JUDGE A PERSON BECAUSE THEY WERE IN THE PUBLIC EYE. PERFORMERS GIVE US LOTS OF PLEASURE ON SCREEN AND THEN WE GO HOME. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO HOME TOO. WE SHOULD STAY OUT OF THEIR PERSONAL LIFE. WE DO NOT OWN THEM.HOW WOULD ANY OF US LIKE TO SEE AN UNFLATERING PICTURE IN A MAGAZINE OR NEWSPAPER OF OURSELVES.

Yea exackly if this is arnold where is the scar on his chest? I think this is fake. A person who was number one in the universe, would not give up that easy. Stallone is 3 years older and hes a tank. Arnold has just as much intesity as Stallone. This sickens me.

MY WORDS PRESICALY IF THESE PICTURES WERE REAL YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO THE HIS SCAR.iF YOU LOOK HARD ENOUGH IN COLLATERAL DAMAGE WHEN HE IS IN THE SHOWER YOU CAN JUST SEE IT YOU HAVE TO BE QUICK BUT YOU CAN SEE IT.

ALSO CONSIDERING THAT HE HAS HAD TWO SURGERY'S ON HIS HEART ONE JUST BEFORE CAOLLATERAL DAMAGE ITS OBVIOUSLY A FAKE.

let us not frget that time waits for no man, and as a long time bodybuilder he knows that it is no big deal to get back into shape, a few weeks dieting and some training and he will be back in shape again, but continued training can be stressfull to the body, so lay offs are as important to bodybuilders as the training itself, it is nessary to keep motivation high, and being the governer of california probably does not leave much time for personal pursuits, but he will be back, either as president of the usa, or in a choice role in a movie, but let us also not forget that he is almost sixty and unfavourable comparisons to sylvester stallone are not valid as we all succumb to the ravages age at different rates.

I shook hands with arnold last year at the arnold expo in columbus, and i promise you that his chest is still bigger than his waist. obviously being a gonvernor and such, he must tuck in his shirt, so it would easily be seen if he had some chub, but fact is, he did not. I believe that arnold is a genetic freak, he had close to 23 inch arms long before days of supplements, unreal. If the pictures are real, im sure he didnt look like that for long. in T3, he looked pretty jacked up still, and that was not even three years ago. Long live Arnold.

It's a shock do people think Arnold still may look like that or differantly but if I may recall I do remember seeing him on this magazine cover that he had posed after he had lost that weight that he had gained and this was taken place after he had that undergo heart surgery that happened back in 2002 but I forgot the name of that magazine that he was on it would be nice if someone new the name of it because I have been trying to find it for a very long time

Have you acheived what this man has? If not shut the hell up! people that live in glass houses should not throw stones. Send your picture in and he will still look better.

Are you an idiot yourself nick? you dont just sit down in an arm chair and do steroids to get big you still have to work out very hard, steroids only help increase size and STRENGTH, not just bloat him out, maybe hes got flabby from having to run as a mayor. gdluck in thinking that steroids make u big with out working out

Hey first of all Arnie is a human. And you cant expect a man to be fit and huge and toned up throughout his life. Its been a long time for him. We've been watching him fit and fine since we were kids. Such a long time. Generally People loose their fitness in a matter of years and some only in months. He's kept that for decades,so he has to be respected rather being shunned.
Rest, its everybody's own opinion.

While I don't like what I have seen and heard of Arnold the man, I do admire his bodybuilding career and his business and political acumen.

It's sad that Arnold has not at least kept up some semblance of his bodybuilding. Even twenty minutes a day or every other day would keep him in decent shape. I'm an older female and in better shape than he appears to be.

Dave Draper is an inspiration to me. I'm not sure how old Draper is. I think he's in his seventies or eighties. He's in absolutely fabulous shape and looks great.

My point is, you can use it or lose it. Age isn't the important thing. Yes, it's harder to get big and stay big and strong as we age. In fact, who wants to look freakish anyway? But there are lots of great looking men and women over sixty. So whatever Arnold's reason for looking like he does, it's his own doing.

And yes, in some unpleasant way, seeing him look as he does is indeed an inspiration. And it makes us feel better about ourselves if we're less than perfect. It's hard to keep up the inspiration and energy to deal with life and work and keep our bodies in perfect shape too. We just have to do the best we can.

Long live Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let us not forget the countless box office smash movies this man has brought to our lives, let us not forget the inspiration he has brought to millions around the world, his charity work, his indominable spirit, running the special olympics, keeping CA great.
That may be him, that may be superimposed in photoshop - who gives a damn. Arnold is one of the greatest men to have ever lived, no-one can claim to have broken down aso many barriers or achieved what this man has.

Well, we all have our own genetic makeup. The theory is there are three body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Ectomorphs have a hard time gaining muscle. Endomorphs have an easy time gaining fat. Mesomorphs have an easy time gaining muscle and losing fat. Each of us is a combination of these three.

Now, while Schwarzenegger definitely had a lot of mesomorph in him, he also had some endomorph. He got fairly bulky in the off-season. While I don't doubt these photos could be fake, even Schwarzenegger doesn't stay lean without some work, and he is a governor after all.

Bodybuilders are known for overcoming their genetic disadvantages though. Check out pictures of Tom Venuto. You'd think he has great genetics. However, he got the worst possible genetic draw. He has a very difficult time gaining muscle and a really hard time losing fat. However, with hard work and dedication, he's still built quite a physique without steroids. Even with the worst genetics, you can still do quite a lot. Few people even come close to their genetic potential.

very soon u will c new built of sir arnold, again he will teach the world how to gain muscle without lifting the weights. in the age of sixty plus he will become mr. bodybuilder . these days he is doing experiment on his body just coz of one who have got flab.

See point is not whether he is in shape or not. Point is when he was in shape he was the best one. And that is worth appreciation and praise. A new machine bought today will not remain new for ever. Man and machine are not much different except the intelligence thing. Even when Arnie is gone his pics we will see in every gym we visit. Hats off for him.

The pictures of Arnold are faked. Its true that he was not able to do as much cardio as he could before his bypass value surgery. But he has been doing very well on his diet since his surgery. And he is able to walk on a treadmill 20 minutes or more a day. And still lifits weights. The picture of him in T-3 doesn't lie! It speaks for its self.

These pictures are all photo shop people!!! Don't believe them for a minute. There is no way in hell these pictures were taken right before T3 because you can't loose that kind of weight and gain that kind of muscle in even a 1 years time. It's impossible. Listen, I've been getting Body Builder Magazine for years and I have the issue of Arnold on the cover pushing Terminator 3, and it talks about his work outs and what he did...including pictures. He had been working for 6 months before shooting even started to get the look from Terminator 2. He was still huge but of course had gotten a little smaller over the years. Anyway, he goes on about how he worked harder than ever before to get the look so it didn't have the appearance of 12 years later 1991-2003. He was huge and looked great.

I also saw Arnold at a speech last year (may 2006) and he was wearing a dress shirt, but you could see his muscles through the shirt. He's still pretty big. As big as he was in 2003 for T3? I don't think so. He's still cut I'm sure.

Now, compared to Sylvestor Stallone's cutness in Rocky Balboa? I think Sly has got him for sure. Sly's 2 years older than Arnold too and Sly looked amazing in Rocky Balboa.

So, bottom line these pictures are fake and the tab loads do it all the time.

I think arnold was geat at his prime, he maintained his shape but not with the same condition. He is 59 years old but can still look better than this. Look at Stallone who recently wrapped Rocky 6, still ripped to the bone keeping in mind Sly is older, his pyhsice was& still better than Arnie's.
The oak should look up to his ex-rival Italian Stallion.
Sly is the best.......period.

I think there is a little too much of the "this is just what happens as the body ages" view being voiced on this matter as well as more than a little mean-spirited vengeance at shooting down a popular icon. More needs to be said about the inherently unhealthy aspects of competitive bodybuilding! Needless to say steroids predominate in this world and Arnold has been open about his use of them during his prime years. I find the various comments online I've read about their effect on the liver and heart as convincing and possibly related to some of Schwarzenegger's recent health issues.

More basic though, is a very simple biological fact. When competitive bodybuilders (or some gay porn stars) bulk up to the huge levels that they do the skin is forced to stretch itself to accomodate the extra mass. This is equivalent to what happens when a person is obese or gains a large amount of weight in fat. The result is the same though, extra skin is "grown". So, once this size has been maintained for a length of time the bodybuilder has one of two options, 1)continue lifting weights to the extreme in order to stay "inflated" (ie: Sylvester Stallone, Lou Ferrigno) or 2)stop lifting or ease up in which case they end up with a bunch of extra, loose skin. While it is true that skin is flexible to some extent, once a large amount has had to stretch or grow it does not shrink back to it's original shape...this is why so many obese people who lose a lot of weight after stomach surgery have to have additional cosmetic surgery to remove all of the loose skin now hanging. Unfortunately, even for those bodybuilders who continue lifting into their later years, the body naturally does lose a certain amount of muscle mass over time and so it is virtually inevitable that hardcore lifters will eventually run into this problem. I know of some avid exercisers in their 60's (I see them at the gym) who are simply "toned" with moderate muscle mass and they DO NOT have problems with this loose skin, deflation problem. Moderation is key people!

I'm quite happy with staying "toned" rather than huge for this reason alone.

Jerry, that is what I said. The second picture shows that even after a biking accident, he is in better shape than most 57-year-olds out there - but up close, there is a lot of loose skin, that is all.
