Dr Perricone and Weight Loss
Dr Nicholas Perricone has released another diet book. Following on from the successful Perricone Prescription (2002) and the Perricone Promise (2004), he has now published The Perricone Weight Loss Diet.
Response is mixed - all three books have a 3 and a half star rating by reviewers on Amazon (although these reviews cannot entirely be trusted).
Perricone brings sensible ideas to the field of nutrition, and advocates reducing sugars and refined carbohydrates, and increasing lean proteins in the form of fish and poultry (and including adequate unsaturated fats - particularly Omega-3). Perricone is a respected dermatologist, and his books (until now) have always had a theme of healthy skin rather than weight loss.
Like so many authors, there often seems to be a line of supplements in the mix - and Dr Perricone is no exception. One reviewer makes this comment:
First it was the fish, fish, fish beauty diet accompanied by extremely expensive skin care products ($190 eye cream?) and supplements ($25 for 60 caps of 250mg vitamin C?) targeted towards ignorant, rich and/or insecure women. I can't read any more of women who sacrifice $600 to buy overpriced supplements, it's heart-breaking...The thing that strikes me about books like this - is the proliferation of diet advice that abounds today. How can it take so many books to say similar things?

ReplyI watched you prorgam on Public TV last week. I went and bought everything that is recommended for weight loss and it was my understanding that it would also lower my blood sugar. After several days of taking these supplements, my blood sugar is higher than normal.
I am reluctant to continue, but revert to what I was previously doing. I have not keep my blood sugar in normal numbers but my averages were just over 100.
ReplyHello. I watched the program also on PBS. (Perricone) Yes it makes sense that the supplements can benefit our bodies and help with inflamation but in no way do we have to pay $195.00 for them when we can go to the health food store or even order them from a health product book for a fraction of the price. I found all but two of the supplements he mentioned on the show in a book. Reputable Health supplement company, for about $65 and this is for at least two month supplies on several of the items. Some were on sale however. I am still researching before I buy anything. Plan to check with my Dr. Though I have no major health issues. It's always good to check with a trusting physician before taking any new combinations of supplements.
ReplyI am planning on buying the vitamins seperately for a cheaper price but am a little confused after reading chapter 6. Does anyone know if you need to take ACETYL-L-CARNITINE and CARNITINE?
ReplyIf I remember right, the Carnitine was to transport the fat to be burned and is also an anti-inflammatory.
ReplyThe Acetyl-L Carnitine which is a derivative of carnitine is a neuro connective and anti-oxidant. Both of them combined helps regulate blood sugar. This is only from my notes taken from the PBS broadcast.
Has anyone actually been on Perricones "diet to reduce imflammation to reduce fat"? Does it work or not? I did buy all the vitamins because it did sound good, but before I could get really started with them I found I have cirrohsis of the liver due to Hep c, now I'm afraid to take so many vitimins because I don't want to overtax my liver but then Dr. Perricone says the purpose of the vitamins are to reduce inflammation (ie thats what hep c is) so now I'm curious, does anyone know?
ReplyAbout the Hepatitis question, I am by no means an expert on the subject, but for the most part the recomended supplements SHOULD effect your condition very little. All the *LA's are fats, and I know you have a fatty liver, but unless your physician has restricted fat intake these should do no harm and actually may benefit your condition. You do need some fat so you might as well ingest the good stuff. Just stay away from saturated fats. The L-carnitine should not pose a problem. Acetyl-L-carnitine might I suppose. Chromium may be good, but may be very very bad. To the normal person taking large ammounts of chromium can cause transient hepatitis. However, I did a quick google on it and apparently some people try to use it as a treatment for Hep C. I have taken the stuff for years and will atest to it stableizing you rappetite, but in your condition I'd ask your Dr. Same with CoQ-10... I don't know how it's metabolized. I don't know anything about the Mitake stuff... I'm skeptical about the effecacy of it in general and I'm not going to add it to my regimine. Lastly the glutamine. I'd say stay away. I know that you can get brain problems from this with a faulty liver, but I'm not sure of the mechanism. The other thing that should help immensely is staying away from alcohol and getting in some exercise. I hope this helped.
ReplyHello everyone,
ReplyYes and Yes! The Perricone Diet Program DOES work! Why you ask? Well, it makes perfect sense really. I totally agree with Dr. Perricone that eating healthier and certain things DOES help with weight loss, I know because it has worked for me. I lost about 5 pounds when I just started (I'm sure that was water weight, but hey inflammation in the body causes water weight). I think it is best to approach any weight loss diet plan with common sense questions like are these foods healthy for me and will I benefit from eating the foods on the list provided for me. I can answer yes to both only because I have tried and this is with Hypothyroidism as well (which by the way ladies and gentlemen, causes inflammation in the body). Inflammation is caused by several diseases and conditions and can be lowered if not alleviated all together simply by following his plan. As far as the supplements, I'm with most of you regarding the cost, there are other alternatives as many of you have already mentioned. A health food store's products would be cheaper but if you can't find it in a health food store, than bite the bullet and buy a few from Dr. Perricone. It will take a bite out of your wallet for sure but it is far better than taking a bite out of your health.
Take care and God Bless!
Remember too, persistence will pay off!
I love the Perricone diet!!! The eating plan is NOT something you need to talk to your doctor about... I don't care who you are or what health conditions you have. This is the healthiest diet I have ever been on even without the supplements. If you can't eat or don't like fish then by all means, eat chicken instead. You can always take fish oil capsules. I was never a big fish fan but after grilling a big ole salmon, I'm hooked. Even my kids devour that fish. I usually buy 2 larger salmon at SAM'S and cut the second one into single servings and stick them in the freezer for MY DIET. The supplements he recommends are all good for you.... there's nothing mysterious and dangerous going on here. These aren't DRUGS that he's asking you to take. They are things you already get in your diet if you are eating properly anyway... just not in the amounts that your body needs. DON'T BUY THEM FROM HIS WEBSITE (you'll have to 2nd mortgage your house!!)... you can find everything you need either at Walmart (but not everything) or visit swansonvitamins.com They have the cheapest prices!! After being on this diet for about 3 weeks, I went to a family gathering and had several people tell me I looked either "fresh" or I "glowed". My dad called me the next day and told me how pretty I looked and that my youngest sister (15 years younger) said, "Sherry looked younger... like my age!" NONE OF THEM knew I was on any kind of diet and that was just being on it for 3 weeks!! So if people are making comments like that without knowing I'm dieting, then obviously this diet makes a noticeable difference in your appearance. The main problems I have always had was a "red face". You could see the capillaries in my cheeks and nose and I always had that "rosy" look. That WAS inflammation. This diet took all of that away and the skin on my face is even tighter and firmer (I turned 40 this year). I feel confident now about the way I look. I do have more weight to lose but it comes off steadily. The first month I lost about 17 lbs and never felt like I was dieting!! I take most of the supplements now and they make me feel wonderful and beautiful. For all you skeptics out there, PLEASE just give this diet a try and you will never regret it. It's truly amazing how healthy you are going to look and feel... almost right away! And the best thing is that it will be a way of life for you, NOT like a "diet". You'll never have any reason to fall off this plan because it's just a healthier lifestyle and NOT deprivation plan. Good Health to you all. :-) Sherry
ReplyA "warning" to Sherry:
Getting your salmon at SAM's (it's likely farmed Atlantic salmon) and eating it about 5 times a week, as he recommends, you may be loading yourself and your kids with mercury and some harmful bacteria.
BTW, you and others may wana' read the following skeptic's opinion on Perricone's diet:

I can asure you that I have no horse in this race...
ReplyDo not eat farmed fish. Stick to eating deep cold water Alaskan king salmon, which is healthier and has more omega 3.
ReplyI didn't read his book but I bought the supplements at GNC, and the way I exercised was sitting down shaking my legs (watching tv) for 45 min. a day, eating everything except Sugars/cornsyrups. I was 157, now I'm down to 131.
