The End of Cellulite?

As far as I'm aware none of the so-called cellulite treatments actually work with 100% effectiveness. WebMD is reporting on a new technique to burn fat - ultrasound.

"It is not like liposuction, which can remove a great deal of fat," Rohrich says. "But it is perfect for patients who have no desire for surgery, but are looking for modest reductions in these problem areas."

Most patients need three or four one-hour treatments. During each session, ultrasound probes massage the skin, causing the fat cells beneath to rupture and die. The body then simply rids itself of the dead cells.

The technique awaits FDA approval.

Its unbelievable how many people would prefer to try something that 'might work a little bit and yes there is some risk involved' as opposed to making the right choices everyday and exercising a little each day.

Joey, I guess it all comes down to "how fast?" and "how expensive?" rather than "how healthy is it?".

People just want a "quick fix". And it looks like someday, in the not so distant future, science may provide it... Meanwhile, it sounds a bit too much like science fiction "...ultrasound probes massage the skin, causing the fat cells beneath to rupture and die..." WOW!

You are all guys commenting on this, easy to do as guys don't have cellulite unless they are 200lb overweight.

Even grossly underweight women who exercise usually have cellulite. I remember pictures of a disgustingly thin Lara Flynn Boyle with her non-existant boyish butt covered in cellulite. So "exercising and eating right" isn't gonna take care of it, even if you overdo both. Or stop eating altogether...

The only ways with cellulite are: accept and live a lumpy life, or spend tons in this kind of treatment.

You can get rid of a lot of cellulite by working out, but I don't think it ever goes completely away or there wouldn't be so many silly "anti-cellulite" creams/treatments out there. I think some women are genetically lucky, but it's true that the majority of women do have it, even skinny ones. All these treatments that they have for it are not going to make it go away forever. Even if it does shrink the cellulite, it's usually only temporary and will probably just come back when you stop using the treatment.

Oh of course, less fat = less cellulite. But unless you get to something like bodybuilding competition shape, with 10% body fat, you're gonna have cellulite. Even the competitors can't keep that shape year long, and it is not healthy as it makes periods stop, and no periods lead to osteoporosis and other health problems.

Jan,

I respectfully beg to differ with you on your post. I have scores of female clients who I have worked with over the years who came to me claiming "I've been working out my whole life, & eating right, etc, etc. but I'm not getting results." Many women who exercise are not on the proper program for what their goals are. The devil is in the details. And, no you don't have to be a female body builder to dramatically reduce or eliminate cellulite. Granted, there are cases where genetics is the dominating factor and the 'appearance' of cellulite is quite stubborn.

I'm not an accountant, so I don't do my own taxes. If I did I'd have lots of problems. Most people are not Exercise Physiologists, and therefore should not be designing their own exercise programs. These people run into problems - such as poor results or injury.

I get paid very well for what I do. The reason is, I get people results when everything else has failed, including women who have not been able to conquer the condition we call 'cellulite'.

I can keep going, but I think you know where I am coming from.

Cellulite is not just fat cells, it is also caused by loss of elasticity and poor connective tissue to hold up and in the fat cells (which are shaped differently than a man), in addition to stretch marks, which many women have, which is scar tissue, which means that the thinner you get, the more you work out, the more saggy skin you will have, which gives a different type of cellulite appearance. Trust me, I've been in excellent shape for over ten years and NO the skin NEVER firmed back. It's scarred, thus I have cellulite appearance because I'm just...a little droopy.

Joey, I'm lucky not to have cellulite while at a decent weight, but I say that because I see extremely fit women who work out correctly (not the "pink weights" brigade - women who lift heavy) and who eat correctly (not the "healthy but carby" diet people) and who still have it. I'm in Latin America and it seems extremely prevalent among Latino women. We had a big scandal when a model who is also a triathlon competitor, with very low body fat, was modeling swimsuits and you could see what little fat she had was cellulite. This is a woman in amazing shape, a shape most women will never get anywhere close to, and only 24 years old. Meanwhile I'll be much heavier at 23% body fat and I don't have it - so where is the fairness there?

I see what you mean that most people who work out and diet don't do it right, and especially women - they are afraid that if they do it right, they'll look like a bodybuilding competitor on steroids, which is total b.s.

As for exercise physiologists, the law here in Brazil does not allow you to go to a gym and exercise without having a program designed by a person with a B.Sc in Physical Education, and with the supervision of at least 1 graduate for every X square feet (I don't remember but it ends up being something like 2 qualified instructors for a small gym, at all times). When I realized in the US you join a gym and just go around doing whatever you want, without having a pro design you a program or teach you how to do the exercises (unless you wanna hire a personal trainer), I was horrified.

Oh and I do my own taxes - but don't set up my own gym routines. LOL

Jan's right, most women, even triathletes, can't completely get rid of cellulite even if they are doing everything right. I don't have cellulite, but that's because I am a runner and I'm also very lean. I think you can lessen the appearance greatly by eating right, drinking a lot of water, and building muscle under the tissue. But the reality is that a lot of women want their cellulite gone ASAP without doing anything about it. That's who these kind of people are targeting with their weird ultrasound/mesotherapy/creams/etc.

Are we not a vain society? Is anyone ever satisfied with their anatomy? I thought I read somewhere where being obese, which I am, is life threatening and having just cellulite is not. I am changing my life style little by little. I will say though, for me, I have been adding strength training sparsely, accordingly to my ability. It is resulting in loss of more inches than weight. Slowly, is fine with me but I do see more cellulite on my body than I have ever seen before. I think it is caused by the tiny fat cells that have not depleted but have collapsed amongst the other stuffed fat cells. Just my opinion.

Reply
Jan

Yes Margaret, you are right - when you lose weight you first get more cellulite, to then get less.

I think self-acceptance goes a long way. I don't deal with this problem (at a decent weight - cause I've been obese and I had cellulite EVERYWHERE at that time) but I have several other common ones: stretch marks, varicose veins, loose skin from weight loss. I see women in great shape fretting about something that most women have. I think it is time it was considered a normal thing.

Thanks Jan for your comments. What ever happened to caring about what the person is like on the inside? I too have all of thoes womens' maladies that interfere with wantin to show your body in a bikini. At this stage of the game all I really care about now is being at a healthy weight, having the stamina, improving my strength, minimizing any pains, and buying and wearing clothes that I really like.

You're very right Margaret. The outside matters because it is a reflection of our inner health (like being at a good weight means better health), but people have to remember the mind and health are a lot more important, and stop aspiring to look like an airbrushed picture. Not even the people in the picture, with all the time, money, and plastic surgery in the world, look like that without major computer correction.

I have noticed that cellulite increases with age, when I was in my 20's I scarcely had none, in my 30's it crept on the backs of my thighs and I was so upset by it ,but now that I'm in my early 40's it seems to have gone all around my thighs, my arms, stomach and slowly getting worse. And to think I was upset then, by a small fraction of it. But I don't want to run out and try the latest fad and spend tons of money on things that simply do not work. Someone needs to put more research into this and truly find aa answer that will work.

I think women here in the USA need to get a life and quit worrying so darn much about trifling stuff like cellulite. I know I am a guy, but so what. I am human and natural. Being overweight is unhealthy true. I'm sure God don't want his prize creation being unhealthy and I seriously doubt Adam and Eve were enormous tub of lards, but folks, wake up and smell the grits, having cellulite don't mean overweight! Even thin women have it! Genetics, diet, and lifestyle all have an impact on it but who cares? Only the vain stupid women that's who! Cellulite is ugly. Says who? It's natural and perfectly normal. Since women gnerally have it much more than men, don't any of y'all ever stop to think, "Well, maybe God designed it that way?" Probably not many, because you let Hollywood dictate your opinions of what's ugly and what's pretty! Women only think it's ugly because they've been told that by California morons from Hollywood for so long. Women are supposed to have higher body fat content than men--from God! Women who obsess about their cellulite and weight to the Nth degree make me sick. If a woman is decent looking and nice, I don't care if she has cellulite at all! Cellulite is as natural as taking a crap. Why don't y'all cellulite hating vain skin deep women all decide that, "ewww, taking a crap is gross. The thought of waste exiting my colon and having to wipe disgusts me. I'm gonna go have my rectum sown shut." See how dumb even if this ain't an exact equal analogy. The way women act in this country is one main reason I ain't married yet. I refuse to put up with vain nonsense. Sorry to be so harsh, but it's time people here quit acting all stuck up, snobbish, vain, self centered, and stupid about perfectly natural phenomena!

While it's good to hear a man's perspective on this, would the guys please bear in mind that as this treatment is as silly-sounding to you all as an 'enlargement' or 'calf implant' is to us ladies; it's unnecessary. I agree that obsessing about something so minor takes energy away from what's really important in life.

At the same time, girls, what's a little orange-peel when you have health and a partner who loves you for you?

When it comes to the crunch, men don't notice the odd bit of cottage cheese or stretch marks unless you're 900lbs and look like Tony the Tiger.

Us ordinary women aren't paid to look perfect, and the celebs that are pay the price (eating disorders and using drugs to keep weight down). I don't make money from the way I look, but I still like to look nice. I'm not a gym freak but I work out, it makes me feel good. That's what people pick up on: I'm not perfect, but I make an effort.

But I am careful to keep my obsessions and insecurities to myself. It's enough of a burden without treating my partner like a therapist.

Here's how I combat cellulite and marks:
*Eat a good, healthy diet - most of the time. Drink more water and herbal teas, as opposed to lots of junk-laden pop. Unless you have a photoshoot coming up, relax!

*Buy a good massage tool. Clarins Multi-Mass is a little pricey, but is fab and cheaper than lipo. Look it up on ebay.
Get a good body brush, too. It doesn't matter if you never use a cellulite cream in your life, just those two things can make a difference. Exfoliate regularly and moisturise to keep your skin supple.

*If losing weight, up your intake of good fats. They moisturise from the inside and help your skin retain elasticity, lessening the marks. Don't crash diet as it leaves you looking like a saggy, deflated balloon.

*Get a good self-tanner. While none is deep enough to completely hide imperfections, it gives the effect of a sleek, bronzed goddess. Trust me, your partner will be so hypnotised by your soft, glowing skin that checking out your cellulite will be the last thing on both your minds...
If you're not into tanning, the rest of the above should suffice.

*Don't bitch about it to your partner - unless he's some sort of body fascist, he won't notice. He DOES NOT CARE! Whine constantly about it and it'll become all he sees. For getting busy, candlelight is your friend!

We have got to stop relying on these silly quick-fixes - they treat the symptoms, but not the cause. Deal with the cause and the effects will sort themselves out.

As I say to my friends, don't obsess about it. When your legs are up in the air, nobody can see it ;)

Billy, you are so right. It is this insane desire to want to look like an airbrushed picture *without* airbrushing. It will never happen and it just makes people insecure, unhappy with what they have, and broke (if they spend money on the tons of "treatments" out there).

I think the key to ridding yourself of this stuff is a very simple thing: Water and sugar. If you increase your water to 8 eight ounce servings of water a day...that will help,(in other words...drink until your pee is white, and never yellow. If it's yellow it means you are severely dehydrated and need more water.) And THAT is the MINIMUM recommended dose. For some, it may mean more water. For instance...if you worked out that day or had a glass of wine, you will then need 12 eight ounce servings of water! Bare minimum! That is a HUGE key to the success of cellulite loss. The other HUGE key factor is SUGAR. DON'T eat the stuff! Don't even TOUCH it...unless it's in the form of honey. Especially stay away from white, refined sugar. THIS will bring on the cellulite BIG TIME. Those two things seem way too simple and you might be thinking...'well I can DO THAT!' But if you are not used to it...it will be difficult at first. That means NO brownies, candy bars, no Starbucks unless it's regular coffee, no cake...no dessert, PERIOD. You even have to watch getting too much sugar in the foods you eat, such as Chinese Buffet food with Orange glaze sauces, etc. Stick to it, and your cellulite will COMPLETELY dissapear at any weight....(but it will dissapear faster if you are within the proper BMI for your height.

Reply
Jan

Kishe, that is simply not true. You can have no sugar (and no honey either - I personally believe honey is the worst form of sugar out there), drink tons of water, exercise, and still have cellulite. There is no miracle cure for it. I wanna see proof of your "no cellulite" claim at any weight in the healthy weight range. I'd be happy with proof for people of BMIs 20 and 21 only, actually. Do you also have to be under 16 for that claim to work? Cause teenagers are usually cellulite-free, even when they eat sugar.

umm actually jan i disagree with your comment about teengaers not gettin cellulite.
i have recently turned 15 and have had cellulite AND stretch marks since i was 13.I don't THINK im over weight [im 5ft 7in and 9 stone], and a couple of my friends also have cellulite, and they arent overweight either.

I also hate how everyone says that the age to get cellulite is 25 or older. I developed cellulite as soon as I started puberty even though I'm 5'7'' and 120 lbs I have it to the point were you can see holes when I'm standing. I do agree with the sugar thing somewhat though (have been eating no sugar for 18 days now, not even artificial sweeteners) and think it's looking a little better. Refined sugar caused all the diseases of civilization so why couldn't it cause cellulite?

Kishe:

Drinking too much water can affect one's metabolism and throw off the body's electrolyte balance (known as hyponatremia/water toxicity). Therefore, instructing one to "drink until your pee is white" is inaccurate. Also, the color of urine does not necessarily indicate whether one is symptomatic of dehydration. As for the miracle "no cellulite diet". If such a thing actually worked, someone would have marketed it and made billions off of it years ago. No such animal exists.

I would however, agree that over consumption of processed sugar is a bad thing (cavities, unused sugar converts to fat), as is eating too many processed foods, or too much of MANY things. As the old adage goes: everything in moderation.

Nuritionists have been touting this for years: Eat a balanced diet, exercise. We all need a certain percentage of carbs, proteins, etc. in order to maintain homeostasis and proper cell function in our bodies. Drinking eight 8 oz glasses of water per day aids in digestion as well helping get rid of toxins.

Knowing your health history also is important. Some individuals suffering from certain disease processes (i.e., diabetes) and slower metabolism need to take into account what part diet plays in their lives.

Bottom line: proper and balanced diet, exercise, positive self-image and esteem, and learning to be healthy for YOU is by far more important than living by the waifish hollywood and fashion stereotypes that have been foisted upon women AND men (look at the waifish young femme boy pics in fashion mags being shown these days). Just think: Marilyn Monroe was a size 10 folks! She's an icon!

To get hyponatremia you surely need to be on a low sodium diet, and/or sweating out a lot of salt, and/or have poor kidney function?

Hi, this is Kookie, I am a hispanic 20 year old female, had no cellulite until after my only son. Was a trim size 8 and am now a size 6 and am in the best shape of my life but still have cellulite on my lower abs, you guys can argue back in forth (which has been very entertaining for me to read) I have used the latest fads (what girl wouldn't?) and it has lessened the issue but not completley. And YES I know cellulite is ugly not because HOLLYWOOD SAYS SO, BUT BECAUSE I SAY SO. hello?! funky gross fat/skin bumps and sagginess! Ew. It's just gross period. And no, I don't follow hollywood, I am very unique and set my own path. But yes, cellulite is very discusting. And if you guys posting on here really think what you are saying on here....then throw away your PLAYBOY and MAXIM magazines cuz if cellulite doesn't matter or fake boobs, DON'T FEED THE HOLLYWOOD CRAZE! email lamamikookie@yahoo.com wink, wink**

tips to reduce cellulite. I'm not being silly plus I have no cellulite and I follow this so it works.
1. Every morning/every other morning drink a cup of warm water with a whole lemon/lime and honey.
2. Eat more fibre.
3. Reduce intake of white bread and other baked goods as much as possible.

Well..., here is where I stand. I have been thin all my life, but first noticed cellulite at the age of 15. I have no idea when my beautiful smooth body began to get it, but I just remember turning around to look at myself in the mirror at 15 (5'6", 120 lbs) and being mortified at the site of the dimples. From the front I have always looked picturesque and I could pose in front of a mirror in a bikini and look like all the pictures, but from the back it was just an embarrassment. Not knowing much at that tender age, I just assumed I was "fat" and should diet. I began to diet and every week I would turn around expecting the fat to diminish, but every week it would remain. I continued to diet until I was 95 lbs and you could still see every rib below my skin..., but guess what? I turned around and the cellulite remained. I was so embarrassed by it that I would avoid going swimming with friends, I would fore go shorts in the summer even on very hot days and I was visibly emaciated but still FELT FAT.

You wonder why young females become anorexic? CELLULITE!!!!!! Because I hate to say it, but cellulite = fat in the eyes of most people. I could bring almost anyone into a room and line up four people, turn them around and ask people to rate which of those people they think are fat, and I can guarantee that the majority of people would pinpoint those will cellulite as fat, regardless of body fat percentage.

I have a moderate view on this issue. The ideal situation is obviously for society to be enlightened and stop viewing the appearance of cellulite as something disgusting, but that isn't exactly realistic, and yes I am sure with an extremely vigorous work-out routine and a personal trainer some may be able to combat a lot of the cellulite. Unfortunately most people don't always have a lot of time on their hands and can't maintain the level of vigor needed to combat a genetic and normal condition. (Yes it is actually a normally occurring genetic mutation and involves estrogen which is why it is so much more common in women than men) Also, "some risk involved" is a chronic part of the human condition, even exercise comes with risk.

We sometimes play down the role others in our society and social circles bare on our lives, but the reality is it is part of us as humans, and sometimes we all just need one less thing to be embarrassed or worried about so that we can forget about it and focus on other things.
