The Maker's Diet: Faker's Diet?

A series of articles at BellaOnline completely and systematically tear apart Jordan Rubin's The Maker's Diet.

While some of these points are old news, when combined together it makes interesting reading. Fake credentials, FDA bans, and apparently promoting soil organisms. I have not read the book so I cannot verify this, but this particular review seems overly negative and a bit hysterical:

If you’re not familiar with Rubin’s “miracle” ingredient, “soil organisms,” let’s bring the little buggers up into the light of day. First off, he tries to make us believe the Bible and various researchers recommend eating dirt for the soil organisms. Is this true? Of course not. But, by starting with basic facts and adding a whirlwind of fast talk, Rubin concludes 1 + 1 = 3, when it doesn’t. That’s how the art of con works.
These are all fairly strong allegations, and despite all this, The Maker's Diet is a top seller at Amazon and maintains an excellent review status of 4 stars.

I personally don't believe you need credentials to make helpful and useful contributions to people's health. The proof of the Maker's Diet will bear out in the results of the people who have followed it.

UPDATE: You can now access all the details of The Maker's Diet online (includes tools to track food, create meal plans and recipes, and a facility to get answers from author Jordan Rubin).

Im glad that I spent 4 years on undergrad + 1 year of internship + 2 years getting a masters degree becoming a registered dietitian and actual nutrition professional, whle somesome quack, phony individual pays for FAKE credentials ( I will not even dignify him by calling him a doctor, because he is not) an makes millions brainwashing the masses with phony nutritional claims.

Yes, the basics are sound: eat more unprocessed fruits, vegetables and whole grains! You get that same information from a registered dietitian or through common sense! Don't waste your money or your faith on this book! Religious people, I respect you for having faith, but wake up and see this as the scam it is.

Sounds like someone is has a case of "envy"

Registered dietitians cost way more than a $15 dollar book and a few supplements.

I am not sure if you read through any of the posts or the book for that matter. I challenge you to prove that his nutritional claims are phony.

Rubin does have the credentials and has helped many people get their lives/health back. For that reason he has my respect.

Erica,

How are you now? My son has crohn's and UC and is struggling. I don't like the idea of alternative approaches but we are desperate. Any info would help.

In 2005, I had a minor stroke and was admitted at a hospital. While watching TV one morning in my hospital bed, I saw Rubin talking about the Maker's Diet. I was desperate and ordered it the same day. After I was discharged, I went on the 40 day diet. The result was INCREDIBLE inside and out. I lost about 15 pounds, my skin looked great, my hair and nails grew in a healthy way, my energy was excellent. I slept and woke up like a baby. I felt like a teenager at 34. Blood work and other lab results were excellent. People noticed my change. I recommened it to many and I know others who tried it after that. In 2008 I retreated back from eating right according to the Makers Diet and I gained weight and started feeling tired again. I noticed that I was loosing the freedom that the Diet gave me. So, now I am back on it. I started the 40 day program again and I am still on the first phase. Even with this short time, I am noticing a BIG change. The "Dirt" issue, some people has tried to explain well about the good bacteria and the effect of antibiotics. And that is true.

To Jennifer, I was diagnosed with 4th stage breast cancer, June 2004. Several surgeries and radiation really wore me down, and I still faced chemo! A friend of mine ( a religous person) gave me a copy of this book. I adapted the diet (no supplements or clenzology) just following what looked like sound nutrirional advice. I had previously given up processed foods, pork, sugar and white flour. I went through 8 series of chemo, without ever having any really violent nausea and vomiting (I am allergic to the family of phenothiazines, the anti- nausea meds!, there was some but nothing like what others with my diagnosis and chemo regimen endured. I drank lots and lots of water. More importantly, I felt that I was more "in control" of my side effects than I would have been, so there was an emotional, spiritual component to the diet for me. It made me aware of what I was putting into my body and forced me to think about food as an integral part of my treatment plan. I am still here today to tell the story, even though the doctors said it was a very aggressive type of cancer. It is not cured, I have metastasis to the bone and colon, but I believe I am much healthier today than I would have been without the diet and lifestyle changes I made. No diet is a miracle, in and of itself. But I recommend this book to everyone I know who gets this diagnosis, as an introduction to eating for living, not just satisfaction.

Hello, I just want everyone to know that I requested this book online after seeing him on TBN and the book was sent to me free. Also I find the amount of work he put into it fascinating it is complete and he gives all the resource info on the where to go for everything. I am sure he is not making money off of every resource. My husband & i have slowly started to make the lifestyle change to the organic and raw dairy as we have a limited income, we do a lot of juicing. We eat less are more satisfied. I suffer from dysbiosis which means i get migraines, lactose intolerant, food allergies, fatigue, diahrea, IBS, & the list goes on. Since changing our diet to the Makers standards I am not bloated, do not have bad gas, my IBS symptoms have ceased,I rarely get migraines, I have more energy.I love how this is a biblically based diet it makes sense to me. I also enjoy the fact that is not about not eating but about putting worthy foods into your body, well being. He incorporates prayer & fasting. He has done everything he can in this book to make the transition an easy one and to provide all information. I like the comment Pat made about us being created from dirt & and eating it..Very well put.
Dr Rubins so called dirt is microrganism that are body needs to properly digest our food. I have not yet tried it but I am hoping to soon.My husband is also benefitting from this change as he to had issues and they are ceasing. I feel great & healthier and I have not even followed the 40 day plan.. I nenjoy reading the book and I will be recommending it to many..Being a christian is a lifestyle change why shouldnt we eat the way God intended us to. After all he created us he should know what is best and to the person who said they did not know whether the biblical foods would still apply today. of course it does gods word is never changing and is always relavent to every age. Our bodies are no different than the bodies of moses'
God bless everyone keep up the conscience eating

This question is for the people with Crohn's disease: Are you still taking all of the same medications after you have been on the diet for a while? It has been a while since I have read the book, but I recall that Jordan said that he doesn't need meds anymore. I am up to about twenty pills a day now plus Remicade infusions every six weeks. I am also in the middle of a really bad flare up that has already landed me in the hospital for an entire weekend. I have been thinking about trying the diet but like most of you, I feel that it will be really expensive. We do have health food stores where I live so I will give it a shot. I think that money saved from doctor's visits, copays, etc will balance out in the long run. Hope someone can help!

I found my fibromyalgia pretty much gone by doing this diet. I have three children one picky one with add who is trying and liking a lot of new foods now and is a little easier to handle. I have three supplements I take and all of them list the ingredients so I'm not sure what that was about. I have found it beneficial for energy and all around healthful feeling. It can be expensive we've found help with local food co-ops and Azure Standard's website. If you didn't want to support Garden of life there are other places with HSO supplements because people are finding they help.

This diet/Life-Style Change does work. I don't personally know if it will cure anyone of a disease but I do know that you will loose wieght and feel better than you did before. I have lost 40 lbs. I do know that this is the diet that our Maker gave us to be healthy because that is what the bible says since I read the Bible regularly I would know this. I am not sure that you should follow any schedule on prayers and some of the other things that Jordon says in the Maker's Diet but you should follow the food rules and you will find out what it will do on your own. I do know that our Lord Jesus Christ heals from illnesses but I don't think that any kind of food will heal. That is kind of saying that surtain foods are Gods and that is not true. However God did tell us in the Bible that if we eat this way it will help to keep us as healthy as possiable. Jesus Christ is the REAL Healer. I do recommend the food part of the Maker's Diet and The Gospel of Jesus Christ for all of your problems.

The nutritional plans I researched prior to settling on the Makers Diet included: Perfect Health (Deepak Chopra), Slim for Life (Gillian McKeith), Anti-inflammatory diet (there are many of these, google it and you'll be surprised by how many hits you get), Ultra-metabolism (Mark Hyman), YOU on a Diet (Oz and Roisen - probably spelled that wrong), I tried a gluten free diet, I tried a dairy free diet. All of these had legitimate points, but one size does not fit all bodies. I am on the Maker's Diet now. Kind of. I am not working because I have Crohn's disease and heart damage and the two together have made the stress of working too great. Because I have no income, it's not practical to even consider using the supplements from Garden of Life. I've researched several different types of diet that are supposed to benefit IBD - I chose the Maker's Diet because it has a structured plan and it focuses on making the 40 days a spiritual journey as well as a health journey. I'm 8 days in now and I am not burdened by Crohn's related symptoms right now. My sincere hope is that it will just get better from here. I am supplementing the diet with probiotic tablets that you can get from most pharmacies and health food stores. For anyone out there unsure if they should try this diet, research what's out there, read the Maker's Diet. Take things that make sense for you from each plan and then put together a plan that works for you. None of us are the same. For example: If I eat raw vegetables, I experience what my doctors call a functional blockage and wind up in excruciating pain while my body tries to process everything. I have a stricture from the Crohn's disease in my small intestine, and raw veggies just don't get processed correctly. A lot of the nutritional plans out there recommend raw veggies - but I know my body and I know that, for now, raw is bad. Only you truly know your body and only you can decide what will work for you and what won't.
