The Pocket Diet: Pita Bread for Weight Loss

Every week I get a number of emails from authors (or more often promoters) of various weight loss programs and books. I don't mean authors like Arthur Agatston (South Beach Diet), or Jorge Cruise (3-Hour diet) - but usually individuals looking for some kind of publicity for their new diet.

Sometimes it seems overwhelming - there are so many resources out there about weight loss. Anyway - here's one thats interesting - The Pocket Diet.

This little book is all about portion control - by using pita bread (pita pockets) as a basis for meals. The book sells for $8 at Amazon. I have not read the book, but certainly whole-wheat pita bread is something that I enjoy eating. Portion size is a real issue and at the heart of many weight problems.

The Pocket Diet appears to be the brainchild of Kangaroo Brands who make... well... pita bread. Many food companies release their own diet plans. However instead of looking for evil marketing conspiracies it's more helpful to see what can be learned from this diet.

Eating pita bread on a daily basis may get tiresome after a while - but overall it seems like a great idea. If you can learn what is an appropriate portion size for your body - you are well on the way to managing your weight.

UPDATE: The author of the book responded with these additional comments:

Our co-author and RD even came up with the concept (out of pocket meals) for meals that do not use pita pockets (so you don't have to eat them EVERY meal EVERY day! We've gotten some great success stories and a groundswell of support, ideas and help (this is unusual). One person contacted us and has already submitted over 225 recipes that will be turned into a Pocket Diet Cook book later this year. You ought to see the list... Mexican, Kids, Chinese.

Little pita pockets for weight loss? Sounds good on paper---portion control, nutrition, and a quick meal. Yet, wheat is not good for everyone. A lot of people should give up wheat when trying to lose weight. Wheat is a processed food, even if it is better than white flour. In addition, many are allergic to wheat and upsetting the body when attempting weight loss makes this goal a more difficult challenge. Even if you're not allergic to wheat, eating pita, too often, might become boring and defeat your diet. Instead, look for bread that is wheat AND gluten free!

"Wheat is a processed food, even if it is better than white flour."

Flour is wheat in milled form. And of course wheat is a processed food, do you expect them to stick whole grain stalks into the oven and bake it? No, you have to make flour out of it first. Processing doesn't imply "bad"; when you break open a walnut to eat it, you're "processing" it.

Yes, the pocket diet does teach portion control, and I love it. No need to obscure the facts here. Yes, this diet helps you lose weight using pita pockets to automatically measure your portions. Yes, allergens are found in many foods. These are separate subjects here. Either way, the pocket diet is most fun I've had with a diet, and I've tried them all!!!

PS Water is also processed!

I have only one problem with pocket bread. They want to split when food is put in them and then you get the filling dropping out when you try to eat it. I have tried different brands and some are worse than others. They do make a yummier, healthier alternative to a salad sandwich though.

Amena, you don't need to eat Weight Watchers brand pita bread. Go to your grocery store and find any whole-wheat pita bread. Most of them are fat-free anyway. Buy it. I doubt that there is any pita bread out there with animal products in it. It is made from flour, water, and salt.

Sue I have the same problem. I usually prefer to get those really large pita breads and split it completely in half. Then I use half of it for a wrap sandwich, or as a "pizza crust" (I load vegetables and cottage cheese and bake it). I can never make the pocket thing work!

I too am in search of a pita that I can cut open and not break or split in the process. This is what lead me to this website. Anybody know of a good brand or a way to preven the splitting of the pita?

Pita's are good for you. I personally love Lamb meat, and chicken.. You can lose weight with Pita bread you don't need to control portion, just don't eat like 2 Pitas one good Wheat Pita with Chicken and Hummas is perfect to lose weight. Just eat it before 6pm.. And add little snacks between like a little bit of fruit etc.. Counting calories, carbs, or portion sizes will drive you crazy.. Key is time of day.. i love 18lbs in two weeks! and im going to keep going
