Spam and Skinny Girls: Somebody Help Me

Opinion
Many times in the past I have complimented some of the thoughtful commenters on diet-blog. Many readers bring well-reasoned debate and insight on many issues (you can always see all the latest comments on this page). However, there are two other kinds of commenters that - quite frankly - disturb and frustrate me.

The Spammer
From time to time on the comments panel you will notice some weird comments coming up. Many of these offer a grammatically correct but entirely nonsensical sentence. Embedded within is a link (or 10) to a less-than-savory web site (normally falling in the PPP region - Pills, Porn, Poker). These folks are trying to get past automated filtering software - this software has rejected no less than 19,869 spam comments since I installed it earlier this year. Unfortunately almost every day some of these comments get thru the system - until such time as I can delete them. Occasionally there is "collateral" damage - for that you have my apologies.

The Skinny Girl
I am saddened and sobered by the number of (already) thin girls who obsess about their weight, the size of their stomachs, and the size of everything else. Not a week goes by when I don't get a personal email from 1 or 2 of these insecure young women - and diet-blog gets bombarded with comments:

I am [insert age here] and I weigh [insert slight weight here]. Help me - I'm too fat and my stomach isn't flat.
I have responded to each and every email I have received - reassuring the fearful young woman that she is just fine the way she is. I never get responses to these emails.

One would think that complaining about your weight is a trendy thing to do. How is it that this generation has become so utterly superficial and concerned with looks alone? I'm sure we can all come up with plenty of reasons.

What adds insult to injury is that many of these comments are in response to a post that actually challenges the very obsession that these girls are promoting. It's almost as if the blog post has not been read, and the girls are in a desperate rush to say "Yes, I hate my body too - please help me".

It seems we have put perfect bodies on a pedestal, and our young gather round to worship the god of thin.

We can blame the magazines - but who pays their wages? The people who buy them. Throw the cosmo away girls - it's full of insipid semi-porn content anyway.

Here's a final comment (ref). Trish is 14 years old, 5'6" and weighs 135 pounds (this puts her BMI at just 22). For those that need translation - IDC = I Don't Care.

I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT IN ABOUT 1 WEEK, BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN MY FIRST SUMMER POOL PARTY IS WITH MY FRIENDS. I NEED A BETTER BODY.. IDC WHAT ADVICE U HAVE TO SAY ABOUT "INSIDE IS MORE IMPORTANT" OR "DONT SAY YOURE FAT" .. because I know I look like a beast, and all my friends are skinny and I want to just have fun.. especially in vacations!!!

Spammers are well, spammers and I don't have anything nice or constructive to say about them. I do have a bit of input on the "Skiny girl."

I've made several reassurances to such women in my lifetime. Most recently to a 16 yr old girl who attends my church. (I'm 24 and about the only member in the 20's age group that shows up regularly, so I work with the youth quite a bit) During our conversation I was briefly concerned that I was sounding like the "creepy old guy" but those lengths were the least I could do to combat the unrealistic images the US media bombards women with. The inner conflict seemed to highlight how absurd the body image concern is today.

PS: http://hjoshua.blogspot.com/ Read my blog, my ego needs the validation ;-)

Well said about "the skinny girl".

When girls try desperately to become the stereotypical skinny girl, they end up becoming a new type of stereotype themselves: the insecure, shallow, uneducated, one-dimensional female who would probably kill someone to have the body of [insert celebrity idol]. Who the hell finds that attractive? And it's pretty sad to observe how many girls these days do match that profile, albeit in varying extremities.

And I definately agree that Cosmo and all other women's magazines are trash. For me, the worst part about going places (shopping for example) is having to stand in line and look at all the b.s. celebrity worship on the covers of magazines at the checkout counter. I'd wager a lot that most of these magazines' sales comes from the same girls mentioned in my first paragraph.

Ugh...Makes me sick how girls who are 116 pounds want to lose weight.

Now I look at pics of when I was only 100 pounds and scared to gain weight and think - darn I looked like a walking skeleton - I don't want to look like that.

Being excessively skinny is dangerous to your health.

Everyone's bodies are different. Not everyone can be skinny.

But you can improve on the shape you do have. Exercise, eat healthy and say to yourself in the mirror - I love myself and how I look.

Try Judo or Karate - it'll help increase your confidence in yourself too. Low self esteem in girls is often the reason for wanting to lose weight. They think that popularity and praise come from how skinny they can get. Sorry to dissapoint but popularity comes from within. People respect people who have confidence in themselves.

Nice to hear some guys say that they don't like what girls are doing to themselves in a futile attempt at achieving an unrealistic if not deadly goal.

I understand

Dear Meg
Your perfect weight totally depends on your body type. But my suggestion, don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Do what you want for yourself. But make sure you are healthy.

Dear Joshua and Ben,
I'm sooooo glad to hear you guys say what you said. Now if we could just tell the world..... Actually, this thin fad has only been around for 85 to 90 years. Before that everyone loved curves:)

wat is the average height and weight for a 13 yr. old girl?

It's very true that everyone's body is different. I really feel sad when I see girls wonder about if they are too fat, etc. And all of them want to weigh less, even if they are tall. Height, bone structure, muscle mass, etc. are all going to determine a person's ideal weight. Not everyone can be 5'11" and 120 lbs. (thank God). Most men think models look weird anyways because they have no body, no curves, no nothing. Girls, don't try to look like models, it's a waste of time, effort, and money. Focus on being healthy. If you are concerned that you are really overweight, get moving, join a sport, cut out the junk food, and eat more vegetables. You'll notice a difference in how you feel and that will project outwards and you'll have a lot more confidence.

Hey, im kati, im 15...i recently realised that the way i look doesnt matter. Im like...128lbs and 5 7". The only reason you feel so fat is because your comparing yourself to other people, if we all did that we would be a very depressed world. Instead of finding stuff you dont like, and find stuff you do like, really opens your eyes.

Sorry, this is a really random thing, but i thought it would be nice to hear from someone your age...ish...

Kati, gd luck

P.S. you have a boyfriend!! some people dont have one at all, and he obviously doesnt think your fat.

I am 13 years old and I weigh 112 pounds. I want to weigh at least 85 pounds. Seeing other thin girls make me sad. Sometimes I cry. I try to lose weight, but I can't, I weighed 109.5. Please give me some tips.

And when I sit, fat hangs out. I feel even more worse when my parets tell me I need to exercise. I need to lose weight more than anything!

Serena honey, how tall are you? Cause unless you are 4' something, 112 is not overweight. 85lb is a good weight for a child of about 4'9".

Hi my name is Carrie, I'm 16 yrs old and you wont believe it but Im only 78 pounds! Im also one of the smallest girls in my class, now the problem is that whenever our school conducts programs like proms, acquaintance parties, I get all worried about what gown would fit on me, and I always have the hardest time looking for the right gown, and eventhough Ive found one, I always look to skinny. Please help me about this matter, I've looked for gain-weight programs but none of them seemed to help. Please give me some tips

Ok, so....i understand that theres a certian type of "skinny girl" who is really sad/annoying/uneducated...But we arent all that way. You know, not all eating disordered people are teenage girls. The eating disorder forum i go to every day is 18+ and our members range in age from 18-50+....i am 23 myself. While not formally educated, i certianly dont consider myself "uneducated".....i've read dozens of books and thousands of articles on nutrition, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, feminism and the politics of beauty.....What all these "skinny girls" (teenage girls wanting to lose weight) really need is to READ. Like, first of all, nobody can tell you what a "good" weight for your AGE is....without knowing your height. And you wouldnt need anyone to tell you if you went to the library and checked a few books out. Go to WebMD and the health section of yahoo news spend some time going over the articles...If you are so interested/desperate/concerned, then go out there and educate yourself.

You know what? ALL that matters is that you are healthy. If you feel healthy, then chances are that you are, in fact, pretty healthy.

I weigh 121 lb, I'm 5"2, I’m 13 and I've just been in a wheelchair for two months. So yea, I might weigh the slightest bit more then I'd like to, but I'm healthy. And after this second operation (on my ankles – two more months in a wheelchair) I plan on taking up swimming. I'm probably not going to loose weight, but I will gain more muscles, and will hopefully LOOK & feel fitter. At school I might weight a bit more then other girls, but I began puberty at the age of 8, so I’ve never been a “normal” weight when you compare me to the rest of the girls my age. But I’ve been a “normal” weight in my eyes.

I’ve grown up being taught to love myself, and I do. I’ve also got wonderful friends who too love themselves. We don’t talk about “Oh my GOD! Look at how fat I am!”, if nothing else, we’re the girls who have very curvy bodies. One of us hasn’t been through much of puberty (physically) but mentally she is right there with us other two. We provide good support for each other, and have a good laugh at what the media is trying to tell us (you need to be skinny to be beautiful). Try it, just laugh. Have fun. You’ll feel better about yourself. And make sure you’ve got good people around you, they’ll make a world of a difference.

I hope everything goes well for all of you!

to libby, whose 13 and thinks shes FAT,,, im 13 too - me and all my friends are at least 108 lbs.... guys at this age are all super skinny, no wonder he ways so little. Acoording to Jenny Craig, a 5'3ft person should weigh like 110lbs.. so NO YOU ARE NOT OVERWEIGHT! you should think ur lucky,. and dont act so immature - ur skinny too and should put on some weight

I'm 29 and 5"5 and 107 lbs. I would say for a woman I wear a size 00/ 0 and probably am to thin. Learn to love yourself for who you are. My best advice is not to look at numbers but strive for a healthy toned body.

Dear Carrie Hino , do what I do. Find yourself a good tailor. When your clothes fit you, they make your figure look more curvy and less like a drink of water. When you buy clothes that are to big it makes you look slimmer. Also find yourself a good molded -padded bra. Have the tailor build it into the dress. It makes the dress look great and a lot more comfortable.

I have no idea how much I weighed when I was 13. I do remember over-hearing my best friend tell another friend that I was too fat to ever get a boyfriend. I felt like dying. But only until I realized that God, who made me just the way he likes me, thinks I am one hot chick, no matter how much I weigh! I know that doesn't make us feel any more acceptable to humans, but it should encourage us that even when we feel fat, Someone passionately pursues us with a God-love that never fails or falters!

Faith and Carrie, try to eat 6x a day. Just normal healthy stuff like chicken, fish, lean beef, rice, beans, vegetables, potatoes, fruit, yogurt, skim milk, nuts, dried fruit, whole-grain cereals like oatmeal. Juice is good to drink, it has plenty of calories but it is healthy. You can eat snacks from the health food store, like fruit-juice sweetened granola bars, trail mix, and cookies. For the times where you can't have a real meal, try a meal replacement shake (not a slim-fast type one, or a protein only one. Something like Myoplex or Met-Rx. They come in boxes, so they are convenient). I had a friend who had trouble keeping weight on even if she ate a ton of junk, but by following a healthy balanced diet she kept a perfect weight. So it might work for you too.

If the problem is you can't bring yourself to eat, go to www.something-fishy.org They can help.

Chelle, if your post is not b.s. I'm sorry for you, cause you are very sick and you won't be alive for long.

Heya, I'm 13 too. I don't think you're fat. I weigh 'bout the same as you. I don't know if you know this, but muscel's supposed to weigh more than fat. I'm not a shrink, so I don't know how to help you Self Esteem, but... Always be open to new ideas, and if you thought it over for a while and you truely belive you're right, then don't back down. What you don't like about yourself is a part of you. If you have ADHD or if you're overweight, no matter how much you hate it, it is a part of you. It is you. Even if you think it has nothing to do with your thoughts or dreams, it does. How you reacte, how you judge, what you fear, everything about you helps influence that. So in truth you can't hate it. Because if you didn't have it, you'd be a differnt person. Even if it was the most tiny change, it would still change. I don't really know if you think that makes sense or not, but... Just look at it that way. (And also, try drinking lots of grapefruit juce and stuff. It's supposed to help increase your metabolism.

i'm thirteen, soon to be fourteen next month. i used to obsess about my weight - i now weigh aroung 130 lbs, and i am 5'4'.

i would alays try to go on a diet, and i would exercise constantly. i would try so hard to lose weight, and i would always feel disappointed when i saw that my effort had made no difference, i felt like i had failed myself.

but then something great happened, i finally opened my eyes and found out that everyone i knew was about the same size, i was a normal size. celebrities, models, etc. are not a normal size. look at people around you, your parents, teachers, friends. /that's/ what a normal size is.

media is always inverdedly trying to tell america what the prefect person should be like. but the perfect person is the person you are now.

Does muscle weigh more than fat?

Reply
Nathan

Muscle is smaller for the same weight compared to fat. IE 5 lbs of muscle is a smaller size than 5 lbs of fat, as illustrated in the image in the link.

This is why it is not really helpful to focus on weight alone, some one 200 lbs and muscular could be quite fit, where as someone 200 lbs but not very muscular could be overweight.

Yes, that is normal. a healthy weight for someone your age and height is 97-143lbs, of course if you are more muscular or have a dense bone structure, a healthy range would be higher. You're fine.
