Meridia Under The Spotlight

Weight loss drug Meridia will not be banned by the FDA - despite lobbying from a group claiming the drug had caused deaths.

Between 1997 and 2003, the FDA received reports of 30 Meridia users who died of cardiovascular problems and 224 other reports of nonfatal strokes, heart attacks and other cardiovascular ailments, Galson wrote.

The FDA claims that the "modest" weight loss from the drug outweighs any health risks. They will be monitoring a European study of 9,000 people - half of whom will be using Meridia (sibutramine).

Thanks for the input cause I was thinking about this one since phen can cause a positive on a drug test. Now, I will stay away from this. Phen seems the safest so far. I wonder if any reports of such negative results were seen with Phen? I know it had bad ones with fen, but has it had any when taken alone. Meridia seems too young to trust and that suchs since it could be taken longer and works in a way that won't affect testing. Oh, well.

I took Meridia for two weeks. It helped me lose a little weight but I stopped taking it because it seemed to have antidepressant side effects.

I've been taking it for almost 2 weeks. It has taken the edge off of my hunger allowing me to monitor my eating habits with MUCH greater success. I needed to lose only about 25 lbs. After 13 days: 7 lbs. Who knows, maybe water weight, etc., but it has given me that start that has seemed so elusive!!
Physically, I feel a tingle on my skin every now and then. My sleep is normal.

Meridia Side Effects

My name is Jennifer Thomson and i would like to show you my personal experience with Meridia.

I am 24 years old. Have been on Meridia for 3 days now. Not worried about reports of heart attacks with no other history...if you are over weight then you are at risk for heart problems at any time!! I have already lost a little over 3lbs and plan on continuing to take until i lose about 15. I have added exercise and better eating habits.

I have experienced some of these side effects-
slightly jittery, sleepy but can't sleep well...this have already started to dissipate

I hope this information will be useful to others,
Jennifer Thomson

My question is this, if you are only 24 years old and are only 15 pounds overweight, under what circumstances would a doctor feel the need to prescribe Meridia to you?

Ive taken meridia now for several months. I'm feeling fine and have lost 60lbs. I went from obese to over weight. I'm very happy (as you can imagine)! Now it seems difficult to drop any more weight. Should I up the dosage (with my doctors recommendation, of course)?
