Supermarket Chain: No Diet Pills For Kids
A chain of 274 supermarkets has initiated a voluntary ban of the sale of diet supplements to under-18s.
Since Sunday every cash register in every store operated by the company carries this sign: "Attention Customers: You must be 18 years or older to purchase certain dietary supplements."
Many diet pills have warnings written on them already, but it the Giant Foods chain has taken this a step further.
Asked whether the company consulted health or nutrition experts before pulling the plug on diet pill sales to adolescents, Hopkins said that was unnecessary. "We didn’t have to," he said. "We just read the labels. It’s all there."

Its really sickening to hear about kids wanting to lose weight via weight loss pills. They like most want an easy solution to a difficult problem.
What kids need is more of the truth about dieting and healthier role models with healthy body images.
Go Dove! I love how they are using normal sized women as models.
Replyi have to admit i stole (actually i pulled them apart and put the weight loss stuff in my water and put the empty capsule back in the bottle) and it hasnt helped me at all and now i am really despret. HELP S.O.S!!!!!
ReplyActually kids don't need diet pills, because they can exercise or do some other alternative to reduce work.I agree what is talking above.
Replykids dont need diet pills? then neither do adults?
ReplyNo kidding...kids don't need diet pills. They need fewer video games and more time spent outside playing tag or kickball. And they need parents that buy them nutritious food, not crap to snack on all day while they play Xbox. Honestly, people wonder why kids these days are getting bigger...that's a big part of it. Kids are young and healthy and they have high metabolisms. They should be able to slim down pretty quickly just by eating right and exercising.
ReplyEasier said than done. Some kids live in bad neighborhoods and are safer inside. Not all kids have high metabolisms everyone's different it varies. Everyone's situation and bcakground is different. Though I still think pills are dangerous. Some of the teens or kids could overdose.
ReplyI'm a kid and i want diet pills. I exercise every day and eat right but i still gain weight. diet pills our the only thing I need to to lose weight. I researchers should make a diet pill for kids over 12-17. We need a nother solution.
Replyi agree with u, those big companys need to make a weight loss pill or drink for kids ages 12-17. i need to loose weight so i can do good in sports all my friends r skinny and i want to be skinny and not fat.
ReplyI tottaly agree i bike 4 miles a day, im a vergetarian, and eat REALLY healthy maybe a bag of chips once a week if ever, and i just can't lose the weight, I honestly felt so bad i tried starving and it worked but, my friend had a problem with that and i know what happened, and i want a safer alternative..... PLEASE HELP! i want to try diet pills, but they say not for kids under 18, but i still don't know, what wopuld happen if i took them? HELP
Replyim a 13 yr old boy who is also good at sports and some of my friends r skinny i have skinny arms but i have a flabby chest and a big belly im afraid to take off my shirt when i go swimmin' some of my friends call me fattie i need diet pills
Replyim a teen too, and im trying to lose weight, but seriously. people didnt have obesity problems in the olden days and they didnt have diet pills either
ReplyI did't even know you could buy diet pills in the supermarket?! Never heard of them, isn't it all just vitamins etc. iron pills and vitamin c and so on...
Replyfatkid, nobody needs a diet pill to lose weight. Nobody. If you exercise and eat right and can't lose weight, it is one of 2 things:
a) the eating and exercising you are doing are not right for you;
b) you have a serious metabolic problem, like hypothyroidism, and have to be tested and treated by a doctor.
ReplyIf you've never had a weight problem then how can you judge what a fat person needs? kids are cuel...they call each other names and target the fat ones.....and then that causes the fat kids to eat more to calm their feelings....diet pills give them a chance to get a handle on their eating habit while the learn to make better choices...if you've every had a stomach that never feels full then you never had a weight problem...have you ever been pregnant and had hunger pangs? been there done that and pills stopped the appetite long enough for me to find good choices to eat better than grabbing junk....being constanly hungry is a physical problem that we humans haven't found a solution for yet except to eat to satisfy the hunger.....
ReplyYeah you dont need pills, just good old starvation has made me lose 17 pounds. I'm 5'6" and when from 135 to 118, and i have a bmi of 19. but i may result to them later if i cant get those like 5 extra pounds off or something. My goal weight is 95 pounds.
Replydo u have an eating disoder? i think if their parents let them get diet pills and that they really need them than it really doesn't matter wat others have to say bout it.
Replyi guess you want to look like a stick!!
ReplyI've had a weight problem before and I know how cruel kids can be, since I WAS a fat kid. I had a stomach that never felt full either. The trick is to fill it with healthy things, like fresh fruits and vegetables and water and good lean chicken or fish. That way, there isn't as much room in there for the potato chips, candy, cookies, etc. And if you replace those high calorie snacks with lower calorie ones, you will lose weight without feeling deprived at all.
Replyhonestly i think that you should be able to buy diet pills at any age...some kids want to take them and if it isnt good for their heart thats their problem and theyll have to deal with it...let them..kids are deprived of enough already and now stores wont even let them buy what they want?! wow...
Replywell i am a really active kid... i play soccer (spring summer fall and winter), basketball (winter), and softball (summer). in soccer i play forward , basketball i play guard and in softball i play 3rd base. im really active but i still have all of this extra weight. i really think that they should let kids buy diet pills.. i agree with the person above if a kid wants to take the risk let them take the risk the only way you can learn is to take the risk. Or they should have an age 12-17.
Replyomg! i totally agree w/ hannah. i play soccer full time. im 13 and im 5'6'' and weigh 135 .. to me i think that is alot but then my family is like NOOO ur sooooo skinny and muscel weighs more that fat but i dont know wut it is .. like all of the other girls are TINY!!! so maybe i feel inferior. idk but tell me if you think that is over weight or not.
ReplyVaughn,
You have no idea how good your weight is for your height. When I was 14, I weighted 160 with a height of 4'11". NOW that is consider overweight. If you want to lose some weight (NOT THAT YOU SEEM TO NEED IT) do it the healthy way. I am 19 now and lost all of my weight by cutting down a little (carbs) and exercise. NO DIET PILLS. If you want to eat rice, pasta, potatoes just do small amounts, eat lots of vegetables put a little bit of butter and salt to make it taste better if the problem is the taste. Now Instead of fried meat, have your parents cook your meat in the oven (that is what my mom did for me), broiled, or steam and ask for your parent support. Believe I wish I was your weight at that age. SO AGAIN YOU ARE NOT FAT!
Replythere so much pressure about other things at are age i think we should be able to take diet pills. Im active too. i play soccer and track and keep in shape in the winter but i just cant get down to the weight i want and i get crazy cravings if i try to cut down my eating. and to vaughn, thats def not over weight u prob have muscle too since u play sports. im 5 foot and weight 115 i wna get get down to 100 but its like impossible!!
Replyi had no idea you needed to be a certain age to buy diet pills. i think they should offer different levels of them. like as alot of people said 12-17. kids are cruel and sometimes need a way of loosing weight. And not all kids sit around on xbox all day like alot of people were saying. most are active just cant loose the extra weight. i know.. bc im 15. im a cheerleader. and im trying to loose weight right now. and its hard... i excercise everyday and ate healthy for about a year.. and im still not loosing any lbs. ... and now getting to the point of not eating and excercising twice as often and as hard... anorexia is an easier way of loosing the weight... when the diet pills are not available to us teens...
ReplyI agree with Hoshi all the way!!! it really is sickening seeing kids take diet pills to lose weight, hay kids!get off of your lazy butts, stop complaining, and go outside at least!
ReplyI'm 16 years old, and I weight 129lbs and I'm 5'7". I have long, skinny, legs so any fat that my body does store goes around my stomach! I was eating fewer calories than I burned off to try and lose weight and NOTHING worked I'm getting so frustrated, & everybody tells me I'm skinny but I'm not satisfied--I really want to try diet pills bc its getting very annoying that dieting & excersizing combined doesn't work, my friends say I don't eat enough but your supposed to burn off more than you eat to lose weight.....
ReplyI know how you feel Dominique. I'm only 5'5 and i weigh 147 but thats because 13% of me is fat, i go to sleep crying because i feel so fat. I have tried not eating for 4 days once but then my mother forced me to eat. I'm starting again tho. I haven't aten anything today and i plan on keeping it that way until i lose 17 lbs. My friends all tell me "Oh ur skinny u dont need to lose weight" but i think thats bull. I need to lose weight and if not eating or eating very little is the only way then that is wat i will do. I can't stand looking down at myself and seeing pure fat even though my waist is 30 inches. I have a goal of 130 or a 25 inch waist which ever one comes first.
ReplyTaby: I understand your frustration, but not eating will not help. Sure, you will lose weight if you don't eat but when you go back to eating, your metabolism will be so slow that you will gain back much of the weight.
ReplyAlso, a lack of protein and essential oils will make your nails brittle, skin and hair dry and possibly [hair will] fall out.
I'm hoping you've switched to unprocessed foods, and have tried upping your intake of lean proteins and fresh fruit&veg and wholegrains.
IF not, I suggest you try that as well as exercising more.
Good luck. BTW a 25 inch waist is highly overrated.
I think kids should be able to buy diet pills. I am a 15 year old freshmen and I am very active. I am a cheerleader, I play volleyball, and I play soccer. I am 5'7" and I weigh 170 lbs. This is way too much. I want to be down to 130. I don't know what to do, I eat a lot of salads, fruits, and vegetables. I don't eat meat though because I am a vegetarian. And I try to do 100 sit ups a day. That on top of keeping active, I shouldn't be as big as I am. All of my friends say I don't need to lose weight but I know I do. If kids, like me, aren't able to use diet pills, then some of us may turn to starvation. Which I think diet pills are a lot more healthier.
ReplyYou need to stop focusing on numbers. Someone who weighs 130 could look bigger than you, because there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideraton. Even at the same height, you could look thinner, although your bones and muscles might be heavier. I had a friend in high school who was the same height as me. She weighed 150, and so did I. But she looked WAY heavier. The reason was that she carried most of her weight on her stomach, while I have a butt, hips, and a small waist. Same weight, different body type. You could look great at 170, while someone else could look skinny or fat. Eat healthy (including not depriving yourself of anything, just eating early and with moderation) and walk at a fast pace. Walking burns fat more efficiently than running. So forget about numbers. They dont mean a thing!
ReplyI am 13 and am 5'6 and also weigh 135. I feel fat. Even though I have a lot of muscle I still feel big. I hate my middle part if you know what I mean.
ReplyI wish they would make diet pills for us...
W/e I am eating half i was before and feel great. once i get used to it, i will eat half of that. I will do that till I am not eating any food. I will fill up on water and not eat. Then I will stop drinking water. It is easy if you take it in baby steps.
Why excersize or count calories when you can make it easy?
People are so hard on people like me and im sick of it.
My goal is eighty pounds.
That's not healthy at all. And why would you stop drinking water? Water has no calories and you would die within a week or two from dehydration.
Replymaybe it would be more convincing to not take diet pills if the dangers of them were actually in this post. i personally have no idea what they are and so i obviously am not convinced.
ReplyI think kids shouldnt use diet pills. I mean come on ... it can do so many bad things to your body when your young. Right now im doing a project on diet pills . If any one actually knows info on diet pills put them on . I would appreciate it.
ReplyPeople dont take diet pills!!
i think that diet pills are a big no no. it isnt right that kids should be able to go and eat mcdonalds when they want and then go and swallow some pill to make it all better. do it the old fashioned way and eat sensibly and exercise. it isnt that hard and in the end you will feel better about yourself and what you have achieved because i have been there and done it. i weighed 80kg. all i did was walk for 30 mins a day and didnt eat fatty foods or lollies and now after only 4 months i have lost 17 kg and im looking great at 63kg. there is still months to go before i reach my goal weight of 50 but ill no iv done it all by myself. talk about a confidence boost.
Replyhow old do you have to be to buy diet pills? im not interested at all, but im just curious as to whether or not kids under the age of 18 can buy diet pills, which should not be legal.
ReplyI am 16 years old. I am 5'4'' and I weigh 115. I look like a pig. I have massive thighs and nasty love handles. I am not very athletic (I'm more into music), so I have little to no muscle. I also have small boobs--which just points out that I am all the fatter. I have starved myself for 3 days before and it worked MIRACLES. However, that was when my parents were out of town. My parents watch me pretty closely and make me eat meals with them and will make me eat. I just researched diet pills to find something. I definitely think kids should be able to take diet pills. I've tried plenty of diets and I've tried a fitness routine, but I saw absolutely NO results. But seriously...since I'm 16, does that mean I can't buy diet pills?
Replywell i think the hole go out and be active things stupid.im 13 and i wiegh about 120(im 5'8).i play soccer,track,basketball,tap,jazz,hip-hop,and modern.im never just sitting around.i have no time to.some poeple are like well thats because your not eating right.well i am. i dont eat fast food or junk like that..and if i do i wind up feeling like a fat pig.or i get sick.well anyway we should be able to buy them cause other people just become anerexic.i used to be. but it would be so much easyer because theres always that fat that you feel gross just looking at it.like everyones judgeing you. and kids these days arent nice.they see you get and they call you a fat pig.so there for we should be able to buy them.it would make everyone so much happier:]
ReplyMy name is Kayla. I am 5'4" and 145lbs. All my friens are bigger than me but my friend Bekah. I feel extremly huge around everyone. Espically all the gorgous girls that my brother brings over. It just makes me feel terrible! I went in to my freshman year at 115lbs at 5'3". I was fine. I went in to my sophmore year weighing 145lbs. I FELT HORRIBLE. I went home in cried. Nothing changed within that year. I ate the same as I did before. I excersised the same. But I gained. Yea my boobs are kinda big. But my gut is huge I hate it. I HATE SHOPPING!! Thats when me and Bekah became bestfriends. Cuz she knew how I felt. Well one day we were at a store and well... we STOLE diet pills. Cuz we knew they wouldnt let us buy them. So we took them. And i lost 10lbs in a week. And kept losing. But I have no more and so I went back to 145. Diet pills arent as bad as everyone thinks. I read all the post on this... and most of the girls... I can almost garuntee are smaller than me. I dont wanna be super skinny... i just wanna weight about 115... 120 and i would be happy. Trust me... being big makes you do crazy things to be skinny.
ReplySo let 13-17yr olds buy diet pills
What was the dieting pill you took !
ReplyI am a teen and i think i am overweight. I have tried everythin to lose wight and i exercise and that didnt work. I eat heathy and i am stil pretty big. I think being fat is making me depressed. All my friends are skinny and i want to look like all of them. I get teased at skool because i am fat. I am 14 and i weight 62kg. I would realli love to look like nicole richie, I reakon she looks gorgues. I would really love to get diet pills.
ReplyI am 16 years old and i hate my body. I am 5' 11" and i weigh 220 lbs, oh and im a guy by the way. I am incredibly insecure because of my weight and sometimes wear sweatshirts when it is like 85 degrees to feel more secure about my body. I despise sports greatly because i feel they are incredibly boring and i just don't like them. I don't have much time to be active =/. I go to school and then i work every day and when i get home i have to do my homework so i have no time to go outside and do anything. So i don't know how to lose weight fast so i have been looking at diet pills which in my opinion are horrible and i most likely won't get them but yes some young teens do not have time to be very active and have turned to diet pills for weight loss.
ReplyI am 13 and 22.5 BMI, and I consider myself overweight but not obese. I have been on a diet for almost a week now, but this one's different. I am not eating salad for every meal, starving myself and then sitting in front of the TV for the rest of the day. Instead, I have been carefully selecting my food giving myself a balanced meal. I am at boarding school most of the time and, coming back home for the summer hols, I realised what a huge, nutritious selection I had at home. So I started to eat healthy things.
-My stomach has already shrunk because I have not been snacking and only eat medium to small amounts at meal times.
-I have been exercising for at least 30 minutes every day and I am organising fun things to do like play tennis with my mum tomorrow. I am really beginning to enjoy exercising. Not particularly at the time (it's gonna be a while before that happens!!) but I feel really good afterwards.
-I have discovered a passionate love of fruit!
-Everytime I look down at myself I no longer see a problem but a work in progress, which I believe is a unique feeling that you can only truly get from an honest diet.
No tricks. No laziness. No drugs.
I don't think weight-loss pills are a good idea, and especially not for us kids. I certainly would like the prospect of a pill that does all the work for you but that's simply not the case. Diet pills for kids are a recent invention, so they haven't had the full lifetime to see what possible longterm side effects they have. They might even cause early deaths. When I first heard of them, I thought 'My troubles are over!' but now I know that they are very dangerous. I don't want to make a stupid decision while I'm young that I will regret when I'm older, lying in hospital because of some damage caused by these drugs.
For all kids who are like me; getting over the first obstacle was the hardest - deciding and sticking to it.
I wrote myself a letter, telling me what I didn't like about being fat, and about why I wanted to be slim, and I will tell you the list was pretty long.
But it really helped me motivate myself, and that's all I really needed.
So for all those people above who say they are embarrassed and want to take the pill, please think hard about what you are getting yourself into.
ReplyI think this post is the smartest one so far.... You should be very proud of yourself.... Everything you said is absolutely true!!! I wish you luck with your new life style.....I can already tell you are a beautiful person by how you express yourself... and I am not talking about looks, I am talking about from within.
ReplyI was also thinking about trying diet pills, I am in many sports and very active but I am still bigger than my friends that don't do anything. For a while I lost some weight but know I've kinda platoed. I know you have to be 18 to buy diet pills but they should at least let 16 and 17 yr olds buy them. If your old enough to drive a car than you should be old enough to make choices about your weight. I just want to get to a healthy size, although I understand that a lot of kids would abuse this (the diet pills) but there just as likely to do so when there 18.
Replyfor some of you girls and guys, anorexia and or bulemia is not something to be desired it is a pathetic attempt to loose weight with out havig to do anything. join sports, run with friends and eat resionable portions. You don't have to starve youselves to be thin.
ReplyFor those of you who think like BPT, you are wrong. Anorexia is a disease in which the person sees a distorted figure of themselves in the mirror. They cannot help what they see, because it is a mental disease, something like how kids with Down's Syndrome cannot help the fact that they are slow. Although at least with Anorexics, people can get the help they need with medications and clinic help.
ReplyBulimia on the other hand is different from Anorexia, people with Bulimia do not starve themselves. They will go through the acts of Binging and Purging (eating a very very large amount of food, and then regurgitating it back up) they believe that they can nurish their body this way, by eating, but still lose the weight by not letting the food settle in their stomachs.
Either way, These people are not "pathetic", they are sick mentally and physically, and require help and attention.
i completely disagree with kiko.we kids have done the most unbeleivable things to lose weight!i have gone as far as starving myself for a week!adults don't and never will understand how hard it is for us kids to put up with all the fat jokes.i am all for the pills,it shouldn't be the adults desision what we do about our own problems.i cant tell you how many times i have been told to deal with my own problems, and i dont know why weight loss should change that.
Replylike most of the above, i agree that people should just make the right choice and choose to eat healthy foods. And if you have a problem with eating larger portions, when you eat the things like salad, you can eat as much as you want and eventually start to notice a difference in your weight.you can also try exersizing on machines because your not having to go out in the heat, so you WILL push yourself harder.
Replyim 13 and i weigh 150.i have just about had it with myself!im sick of waking up in the morning to this body.i have finially turned to starvation.i m planning to slim down to atleast 70-80 pounds.and the thing i fear most about being a fat, is SHOPPING!!!i would rather jump off a building than have to shop for clothes for the new cemester.i despise shopping!!!i have tried EVERYTHING,to lose weight and to tell you the truth, nothing has worked and i agree that taking pills is a lot healthier than starvation, but its what ive come down to and im not turning back either.so, hopefully, this will work, because this is my last chance to lose any weight,so, wish me luck.
Replyhey,umm...i think there should be a diet pill for my age..13...i'm pretty active i walk everyday to school and back but it doesn't seem to help i almost weigh 180 but everyone excepts but it seems that all my friends have boyfriends but i'm the only one w/ out one, i feel left out kinda and self counsious but i've tried not eating as much and eating healthier but i only eat when im hungry, thats why i dont get it...? but everyone of my friends says im not fat but i still kinda think they just say that because they're my friends...but i wish i could walk down a beach in a bikini and feel good about my body, have a boyfriend, hav a guy or two look at me...but i dont think its going to happen without help..and maybe a diet pill is the help i need... if only somone made a diet pill for kids around my age...I HATE BEING THIS BIG!!!!!!!!!
ReplySAB, I KNOW HOW U FEEL. I WEIGH 150 AND ALL OF MY FRIENDS HAVE BOYFRIENDS EXCEPT ME, I ALSO WISH I COULD WEAR A BIKINI OR EVEN JUST A SWIMSUIT AND NOT FEEL LIKE EVERYONE IS LOOKING AT ME.WHEN I TRY TO MAKE FRIENDS I CAN JUST FEEL THEM LOOKING AT MY SIZE, NOT ME AND THATS THE REASON I DONT HAVE BUT A FEW FRIENDS.I HAVE HEARD THAT SAYING NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, BUT OBVIOUSLY,NOT EVERYONE GOES BY THAT BECAUSE IN MIDDE-SCHOOL,LOOKING AT THE COVER OF A BOOK IS THE ONLY WAY YOU KNOW IF ITS GOING TO BE A GOOD ONE OR NOT,INSTEAD OF READING THE PAGES,WICH IS THE EASIEST WAY OF ALL,PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO GET OUT OF READING BY BEING CRUEL.THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE FREINDS IN MIDDLE-SCHOOL, IS JUDGEING THEM BY THEIR SIZE,COTHES,AND THEIR FACES. HONESTLY I BELEIVE THAT , IF ADULTS ARE ALOUD TO TAKE DIET PILLS, AND THEN TURN AROUND AND TELL US KIDS THAT WE CANT, IS REALLY WRONG AND THAT THEY NEED TO REALIZE THAT WEE ARENT LITTLE KIDS ANYMORE, AND WE CAN MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES, SO FOR ALL OF YOU ADULTS READING THIS RIGHT NOW, YOU BETTER TIGHTEN UP!
PS.THIS MEANS, I SAY YES TO DIET PILLS FOR ALL TEENS.
ReplyJEEEEZZZE, I thought I was the only kid secretly wanting to use diet pills. I'm 5'4'',12,and weigh 140. Over the summer I joined a gym and lost 5 pounds. NO ONE CARES!! To me, 5 pounds is alot, but i still need to lose like 15 more. Diet pills seems to be my only resort. I think scientists should come up with a diet pill for kids. In my house theres always some junk food and every once in a while I'll eat it. My parents won't help me with the eating and sometimes they wimp out on going to the gym. SOMETIMES I WISH THEY WOULD CARE!!!!
