Anne Collins Diet: Reviewed
If you ever searched for weight loss information on the web, you've probably come across the site of Irish nutritionist Anne Collins. The site has an overwhelming amount of pages - although many of the pages seem like they are designed for a search engine rather than a person.
A brief perusal of the site map shows us information repeated over and over. Each of the following phrases has it's own web page (containing a paragraph or two telling us to eat less and exercise more); Fast Weight Loss, Lose Weight, Lose Weight Fast, Lose Weight Forever, Shed Fat, Shed Pounds, Get Lean, Get Leaner, Burn Fat Fast... I think you get the picture. This is spam and is designed to capture as many visitors and lead them to the weight loss program.

Cover page of the eBook
The daily Calorie amounts total approximately 1100 Calories plus snacks. For variation, Anne Collins takes an unusual approach of allowing more Calories based on how much weight you have to lose.
For example; If you are female and have just 11-30 pounds to lose, add 200 calories each day from the snacks list (thus making a daily total of approximately 1300 Calories). If you are male and have up to 20 pounds to lose, add 200 Calories per day.
While I can see some sense in the approach (more calories for a heavier person) - it most definitely wouldn't work for me, and basing Calorie recommendations on how much a person feels they should lose seems a rather inaccurate method. For me personally this would mean just 1300 Calories per day. I know from experience that below 1500 Calories per day I rapidly lose muscle mass!
Exercise
There is mention in passing that recommends exercise, but this is most definitely a diet plan only. Based on some of these Calorie levels, I would find it very hard to have the energy to exercise anyway. Cardiovascular exercises and weight training are an extremely effective part of any weight loss program and need to be given more emphasis.NOTE: I downloaded another plan - the Low Glycemic Diet - and this had an extensive section on exercise - so perhaps each eBook has evolved over time.
Health Issues
The eBooks make mention of a number of health issues (Diabetes and PCOS) and provides additional recommendations in this area.Sample Low Glycemic Plan
DAY 1- Breakfast: Traditional Oatmeal, Honey, Seeds and Nuts
- Lunch: Tuna and Bean Salad
- Dinner: Baked Chicken Breast and Vegetables
- Milk Allowance: 1 cup skimmed/fat-free milk
- Breakfast: Fruit Yogurt/Smoothie
- Lunch: Avocado and Chicken Salad
- Dinner: Baked Cod with Mustard Sauce, Green Beans, Carrots and Rice
- Milk Allowance: 1 cup skimmed/fat-free milk
Summary
When it comes to price - it seems that Anne Collins would be hard to beat. With a selection of eBooks addressing most nutritional regimes - Anne has all the bases covered. Every meal plan is detailed and comes with many options and substitutes. This is no eDiets, but does provide a large selection of meal plans and diet ideas to choose from. The Calorie recommendations are a little concerning and certainly for me personally (190 pound male) would spell disaster. Yes I would lose weight but at huge cost to both my metabolism and muscle tone. The 14-Day Low Calorie Booster diet comes in at just 1,000 Calories (only 200 above the medical definition of a Very-Low-Calorie-Diet). The recommendation is to follow it for no more than 14 days - I would say no more than 3 days!
The program will appeal to some, but the large amount of spammy web pages in the main site detract from the appeal. The amount of information available can seem bewildering and lacks cohesion - although the membership is backed by a generous support mechanism (including forums and email to Anne herself).
Compared to many other weight loss eBooks on the market, Anne Collins is a better choice. However I feel other eBook offerings such as Tom Venuto's BFFM are superior. When it comes to nutrition and weight loss - there is no one-size-fits-all - we are all unique and must find what works for us.

Hi,
I take the point that you make but I think that Annes diets are aimed at women mostly. I think that she's great and she really does give personal replies to email qestions. I found her support and the discussion forum really really helpful. I lost the weight that I wanted to and I never felt hungry. I didn't do much exercise except some walking. I'd recommend Annes diet any day.
ReplyTracy,
ReplyWhat kind of diet did you pick? Are you still a member? I have been looking for an online diet program, but can't decide. I don't know anyone who has ever tried them personally, and I really don't want to waste my time and money.
Hi Crissy,
Only checking back in now. I used the low carb diet. It was great and I lost nearly 20 pounds. I'm not a member any more. Don't need to be :) But I think my password still works. It's only 20 bucks so your downside from a cash point of view is nothing to worry about. The forum is great. I used it for quite a while even after I made my target weight.
ReplyI joined, and have felt motivated and well served so far. I consider that for the ebooks alone, with their comprehensive diet lists, the low subscription would be worthwhile. Add to this the online 1-2-1 help, the forums and motivation stuff, and this value increases. The pages giving food energy values are free to all anyway. There are also some UK alternative diets given, so Anne is sensitive to the needs of non-US clients. A more complex, more expensive site can just confuse, so I believe this site is reconnemndable. I can't comment on the spam text pages beyond recognising that these are just bait, driven by you-know-who's almost monopolistic domination of web searching.
ReplyGood comments Trevor, and I particularly concur with the comment about Google's domination of web searching. I was using Google to drive the Diet-Blog search... until I discovered that have only index 1/4 of the entries in diet-blog. I switched over to Yahoo who have the whole of diet-blog indexed.
Reply20 bucks doesn't sound like much, but I can't help but think I can get the information free, if I just look for it.
I'm trying to eat right, and have been walking 10,000 steps a day. I'm losing weight fairly slowly, and it's hard to be patient, but the most important thing to me is learning to eat better. I feel better, so I feel like I'm on the right track.
ReplyI'm proud of you for making long-term changes!
3fatchicks.com has an extensive forum for almost every diet imaginable, and it's FREE! I used it a lot on the SBD, and found tons of great recipes there.
ReplyWell,
ReplyI tried so many yo to diets and nothing works. Until one day I finally lost weight and a lot.
I am 5'5 and 110 pounds, I eat one small piece of chocolate a day and when I overeat one day, I don't gain a weight. It is self discipline, you learn what to eat to keep your weight and ur shape the way u want it.
As far as energy, I still swim on a daily basis one hour.
After trying almost everything else available I finally tried this program over a year ago. I haven't needed to diet for the last 6 months. I'm sticking at my correct body weight easily. Anne Collins doesn't actually make you diet - she encourages you to make changes to your lifestyle. It took a while but about a month after I joined I realized just how different her approach is. It's all in the head and just don't go hungry. Weird eh? You've got to make sure that you don't feel hungry to lose weight. That was new to me. I don't care how she gets people her site I just hope that anyone that really has a weight problem joins her program. Don't be fooled by the low price. She could get away with charging a lot more. Without a doubt her forum is the best I've ever seen and if you don't believe me you can check it out here: http://www.weight-loss-forum.org/index.htm (There are small black links at the bottom of the page) The forum wasn't open to the public when I was a member and as far as I can see there are still big chunks of it not open but there is enough on show for you to get an idea of how good it is. I found that the key to losing weight was to have the support of people with the same problem. Anne's forum members are the best. For what its worth I definitely recommend Anne Collins.
ReplyI have been doing a very low calorie diet for 2 weeks. I have lost 9.2 pounds. Which makes me very happy. I have started to exercise and feel really great. I am not hungry. I just choose the best foods to fill me up and are low calorie. Is this bad? I have heard very low calorie diets are bad if you do not have a high bmi.
ReplyNice!
ReplyI'm glad we have all those comments. I'm thinking about buying the Anne Collins Diet. And this was a big help. Thanks everyone.
Thanks,
ReplyI'm going to try Anne Collins Diet and I'm trying to get my mother to do it with me. This info was very helpful.
I am currently a member of Anne Collins forum. I can tell you now that her forum is one of the best things that ever happened to me. We all know how to lose weight. We could all probably write our own diet books. I have known for a very long time how to lose weight, but I have never been successful before. The difference this time is that I have found a wonderful source of support on this forum. All of the people on this forum are people who understand exactly what I am going through. When I have a bad diet day, they are there to encourage me to get back on the program and keep moving forward. When I have a good week and post a really good loss, they are there to cheer me on. I feel like I have found a new family on this forum.
ReplyAnne is very flexible with her programs and encourages you to mix and match within her different diets so that you can find the perfect fit for you.
If you are like me, you have probably thrown away tons of money on quick fix schemes and "miracle cures" for your weight loss. I have found that this $20 program is worth more than all of the hundreds of dollars I have spent before. Thanks for reading my comments. Good luck.
I am currently a member of Annecollins weight loss program and I can honestly say it is the best! I have tried everything and this is the only time I have seen results. I started her program tw0 weeks ago and have already lost 8 lbs, thats more than I have lost in a month or two with any other program. I am never hungry and the support from people all over the world is fanominal....I love it and would recommend it to anyone trying to loose, as its not really a diet its a life style change.
ReplyI hope this helps anyone trying to loose.
I totally agree with the other contributors. Anyone that wants to lose weight just has to try annecollins.com. Anne is brilliant at giving the right support when its needed. I've also made some really good friends in the discussion forum. I love it. Best of all is that I am 20 pounds lower than when I joined. No other weight loss program has ever come close.
ReplyI actually decided to join, and did as of last night.
I mean $20 for 12 months, and the forum use, is worth it. I even managed to meet some very nice people on there, as they make you comfortable and welcome you warmly.
I'll give it a try and see where i get, i'll try to post results asap.
ReplyI'm a member of the Anne Collins program and I think it's VERY good. I use her forum extensively and I get great encouragement and support from it. If you want to see how effective it is have a look at these photos - http://www.annecollins.com/diet-success/weight-loss-pictures.htm
ReplyThese are real people and I know them from the Anne Collins private members forum. There are loads more photos in the forum but you can only see them if you are a member. If you are overweight I heartily recommend that you invest $19.95 in yourself.
It's me again. I should have made that web page a link. Here its is now before & after photos . I hope I got that right this time. Sorry :)
ReplyI decided to try the Anne Collins diet plan after I read a recommendation by Doctor Tina Ambury. She is a well known UK physician. I've hit my target weight with just the occasional blip along the way. I also recommend the Anne Collins diet plan.
Replyi am just searching and i have been reading on anne collins and i think i will be joing this plan. i'm in desperate need to make a lifestyle change i am 5'4 and weigh 209.
ReplyJenn, you can do it (I don't know anything about this plan specifically though), but I'm 5'1 1/2" and I was 230lb. Just be patient.
ReplyHere's my review on the Anne Collins Diet:
Why waste money on Anne Collins Diet when there's easier more practical diet to use online. EDiets (www.ediet.com) and custom PersonalDiets (www.personaldiets), and cyberdiets cost less than $3.00/week. Why waste your money on buying ebook for an unproven diet?
I can go to the library and get all kinds of diet plans like these for FREE. Is Anne Collins even qualified? I've tried to find her credentials (is she a doctor, registered dietitian, licensed nutritionist, physician, nurse, etc?)As far as I can tell she's a self-proclaimed expert at best. While she's a pretty competent writer this doesn't make her qualified. I think I'll put my money on the diets recommended by diet experts: Registered Dietitians, Doctors and those with licenses in nutrition.
ReplyYou're way off the mark Anne Lauren. By the sound of it you haven't tried out the Anne Collins program (btw if you haven't you shouldn't call it a "review"). If you had tried it you would know that it's a helluva lot more than an ebook. You become a member of a private club where you get one to one advice and help and (my favourite bit) into the private members area. I've been on loads of forums and I promise you that this is the best ever. Even though I have reached my target weight I still check in on a regular basis.
As for the price, it only costs $20 for a full year and she doesn't charge your credit card again. With guys like ediets you'd easily pay $20 in the first month AND they keep charging your card until you tell them to stop.
I don't care about her qualifications (although I think she's a nutritionist) the main thing is - does she help you to lose weight? The answer for me and the other guys in her forum is a definite YES.
ReplyHello all - thanks for the great input on Anne Collins. BIG QUESTION: I subscribed to her "USA Diet" years ago but it appears all has changed, since the calorie limit was more like 1250 per day. I want to try the booster diet (14 days) to get a kick start. Have any women in their 30's tried this one specifically? Or could anyone confirm if the 14 day one I have from 2002, would compare enough to this new one? I'm 5'2" and weight 174 (clearly I gotta get on this). Thx a ton!
ReplyShauna,
It sounds like you work for Anne Collins website. If not, why, if you've lost so much, are you still visiting sites like diet-blog? I didn't lose on her diet and changed to another that's works and is worthy of getting behind. Don't worry I won't give it a plug and compete with your shameless plug for Anne.
BTW- Anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist - and apparently Anne knows this. Although I'm sure you knew that already since you probably work for her -right? It really doesn't matter whether you lost weight on a diet. That's not the only measure of success. AS you can see from my statement, I didn't, so doesn't that negate your success? There's many more disatisfied customers too - I guess you knew that too.
I'm glad you've lost weight - I really am - but don't defend a diet with "it's good because I lost..." You can lose weight on any diet - just lower your calories below your maintenance calorie needs. Lots of diets on the internet provide support and many do so with far better credentials and information than Anne.
All experts (dietitians -->not nutritionist) will tell you that there's a universe of dieters who lose weight -- they just can't keep it off (have you regained your weight yet?) It's most likely going to come back if you've gotten bad advice which is likely if you've followed Anne's diet.
We don't need a bunch of dieters who ascribe to poor nutrition principles and diet practices who take it off one or several months- only to put it back on later. We need dieters who can and do succeed long-term. There's diets out there that can help you do that. Do you even know what type of diet leads to long-term success? Research does! Do you research such things as long-term success? I do! Want proof? Go to the weight loss registry and take a lesson for a change instead of spending your life plugging for Anne. Instead of visiting diet-blog - which you say you only visit for fun (B.S.) check out which diets are really advantageous. Do it now by going to a non-commercial site. One with your best interest, health and weight at heart. It's called weight loss registry. Find the link below:

ReplyI am not a member, but I would like to join. The problem that I have encountered in the past is the plans are hard to understand.Does this plan require you to be online for hours/day? I work on the night shift and this would be a problem for me, I also go to school so I won't have alot of time to dedicate online.
ReplyI follow the Anne Collins diet. And when I am unable to follow it (vacation, road trip) It has taught me the right portions on what to eat. I also eat very healthy now. With the forum for members I have picked up some great tips on keeping fit!
ReplyThere's a lot of over-all snark posted on the posts above. I am a member of Anne Collins' and I find it to be really helpful. I've never been good at cooking, but she taught me simple foods that were easy for me prepare.
This was a big deal for me. If I can't make the stuff, I won't stick to a plan. This made it really straight forward. And as for me working for AC, I do not. I work for a local municipality and I work in IT, so bitter naysayers can stuff it.
I did the 14 day booster diet and it did boost my metabolism, however I emailed Anne directly to find out about raising the caloric intake. I exercise vigorously and she agreed that more was better IN MY CASE.
Those who didn't lose, I'm not sure what to tell you. It has been working for me.
I just like it because I feel healthier, there's a lot of folks online to support you, and it allows flexibility. I'm not sure about her credits but... there are several options and it just so happens to be that I chose hers. I would not have been sure were to look in a library and what other sites to go to that would give me an instant, easy, access to plans that MAKE sense to me. The foods are better for me. I've used her free sites for years just as references. I only recently joined as a member and I really like it.
ReplyI am so confused reading all your comments some are positive other not so, I really am trying to find the right diet for me to follow and the ann collins plan was looking promising if anyone who is still on the diet could let me know the good in it and if it really is legitimate i would apppreciate it
Replythank you
All the info here about Anne Collins diet is so helpful, thank you. I'm looking for something that will work for my husband and I, depression and various other things have caused us both to gain weight and so far the diets we've tried didn't work too well.
My biggest problem with a lot of diets is that often they suggest weird foods. To the people who are still members, are the food suggestions realistic stuff that you might make normally? And things that you can get at a normal grocery store?
Given the price I think it at least is worth trying, I've wasted far more then $20 over the years.
ReplyI started the Anne Collins plan exactly one week ago. As of today I have lost 2.5 lbs. I am doing the Low GI Diet. I never exercised, and I was never hungry.
ReplyThe foods are just regular foods. My grocery bill is actually lower on this diet.
I feel good, and I think this is something I can stick with.
At this point, I'd recommend it.
Ok, now this is my second week on the Anne Collins plan (Low GI), and this week I've lost 2.8 pounds.
ReplyI'm also starting to notice my skin is much smoother and clearer now, probably because there are almost no processed foods on this diet.
I'm still not exercising yet.
Easy to follow, inexpensive foods (just regular foods), and steady weight loss. I'm hooked.
How much have you lost so far??
ReplyAnne Collin's dates are not adding up. She states that she has been doing this for 24 years on the front page of her website. A friend pointed me to a website called alexa.com. When you do a history check using their 'wayback machine' there are three years where she claims she has been doing this for 23 years.
Nothing against Anne, but why would she be untruthful about this? I was disappointed when I saw the information was inaccurate.
ReplyHello, all,
I've been a member for a year now and have followed Anne's advice and her meal plans during this year, improvising on her vegetarian meal plans somewhat arbitrarily from the third week on and have since added recipes to my meal plans that are not Anne's but could be (they are low-fat, low-cal and have a similar combination of ingredients). I did not manage to exercise regularly. Since I am a bit of a private person, I have not participated in the forum. So, it seems that I have missed what many of you have described as the best part of Anne's programme.
In spite of all this, with the help of Anne's diet programme I have managed to go down three sizes within the year I have been a member and am now a very happy UK size 14 (or US size 10, I suppose)on her way to UK size 12. Acutally, I went down three sizes within eight months, and since then, I have no trouble at all keeping my weight (and size) without ever being hungry of feeling unsatisfied with my meals. I did not lose muscle mass, I brought down my hightened blood pressure and normalized my thyroid production (as established by a certificated medical doctor), I feel great and I have all the energy I need in my job. So for me, Anne's Diet works very well, and it has turned out to improve my health, may she be a dietician, a nutrition or none of these. This is certainly what a diet is about: making people slimmer, healthier and happier. So, I do not understand what it might be that provokes comments like Anne Lauren's, and I simply do not care. I would always recommend Anne's diet because of many reasons, but one that is especially important to me is that it allows for variation, deviation and addition and still works so well. For me, it has not only been a success, but fun.
P.S. For the suspicious minds like Anne Lauren's: I am not working for Anne, but as a self-employed academic consultant (I know my research methodology and statistics), and I found myself on this web site for the first time today, not because my weight loss is only an imagined one as Anne Lauren seems likely to suggest, but because I received a mail today announcing that my membership in Anne Collin's programme is about to end. I was thinking about whether to renew my membership (mainly because it deserves credit) or not (because I do not feel it can inspire me further), so that I wanted to see whether Anne provided any interesting updates and from there I came to this site via some reviews of Anne's diet; well, everybody who is regularly serving can imagine...
ReplyHello,
My name is Maria, I have read just about all the reviews in this page and I am very happy with what I have seen. A lot of these reviews have answered so many questions that I had. Like many of you I too have struggled to find a diet that works. It seems to me that many of you have found it, I was reading the Anne Collins Diet program and just might become a member. I just hope that just this ones something can work on me. Maybe with the forum (which brings motivation) I will keep on going because I have the idiot proof diet,(its a downloadable diet) but really didn't keep going. Even though I can generate all the menus I want when ever I want I just really didn't have the motivation. I will post here if I do become a member. For now all I want to do is establish my self before I start any diet. Thank you all for your helpful reviews. I hope I see more later on. Till next time.
ReplyHi there! I've been thinking about going on the Anne Collins diet. I am 5'2 and weigh 120 pounds, and want to lose around 10 pounds. I am already a vegetarian so I'm assuming it won't be too hard. I was just wondering what the cost of an average grocery bill per week would be on this diet? I am a student and living on a budget so I wanted to make sure I could afford it before I join. Thanks for all your help!
ReplyI am not a member, but I would like to join. The problem that I have encountered in the past is the plans are hard to understand.Does this plan require you to be online for hours/day? ReplyI really enjoy the posts on all the ifferent diet plans. The Anne Collins diet plans are reasonably priced, however i believe that any good weighy loss program should incorporate both diet plans and fitness plans.
ReplyDoes she provide portion sizes with the meal plans? It looks like she just gives meal options so how can she then say its a 1200 calorie diet if there is no serving sizes.
