Body For Life: For Women

Body for life for WomenBill Phillips' Body for Life is arguably one of the most influential and inspirational fitness books to appear in the last 10 years (despite it's ties to the authors supplement company). The emphasis is not just on losing weight, but making an entire transformation. Dr Pamela Peeke recently released a "women's only" version - called Body-for-LIFE for Women.

The book is a 12 week program addressing emotional health, nutrition, and strength. It has a refreshing angle on our obsession with losing weight - the author "focuses on minimizing fat and maximizing tone, being a smaller size at a higher weight".

Here is a short summary from Knight Ridder Newspapers:

* Be conscious of how you exercise. "Work on progress, not perfection," Peeke said. Don't just do the StairMaster; embrace diversity.

* Eat every three to four hours, and watch those portions. "We've bashed carbs and we under-eat proteins ... make combinations in a balanced way. When we eat this way, we eat more protein, "Peeke said. Some women eat huge amounts of healthy foods then wonder why their bodies are out of proportion. Eating too much brown rice or drinking too many smoothies is not good, Peeke said.

* Get a dose of vitamin I. That is "I" as in intensity. "Women have to learn to become more intense," Peeke said. "Start with a creative combo of strength training and cardio. As you age, you should increase the time you strength train. After 40, muscle mass melts at two to three times the rate of muscle in men," Peeke said. Pilates, yoga and resistance tubing are a few strength exercises you can do.

Why a different book for women? Here is a another quote from Dr Peeke (one that you may not agree with!):
"Men embrace intensity. They go into a gym and go, "Go hard or go home.' A woman goes in and says, "Oh my God, do I have to sweat? What about my hair?'" Peeke says, with animation.

Gee, I'm just a girl, I don't want to sweat! Please give me some cute pink 1 lb weights so I don't hurt myself!

Psssh. Please.

There are so many books out there on womens health and fitness and yadda yadda. Its hard to know which books are woth it. Adding the summary was helpful. It does seem like this author has some good advice. I found this article on women and health disease.

I think this is a great book and the health and fitness issues it addresses for women are very informative. A few years ago I did the original Body For Life and had amazing results. I feel that this was definately due to the intense workouts and diet. This book and "toned down" version for women will give results if you follow it but I don't think they will be as good as the original plan. For me, if I am going to "remove" weight, I want to do it hard and fast. So, for you serious weight removers...check out the original BFL in addition to this book!

Not where I workout..........

Women where I work out are very serious.....this no sweat....how is my hair looking is not true. The real women that attend my gym have their hair up in rubber bands, clip...whatever. They have towel for their sweat ( just like the guys). To fall back on some girlie girl thang is just not worthy of the author.

The book is great and if the women's version is helpful to some women that is great too.
