Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise
Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.
Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.
We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Hey guys
To all you teenage girls out there trying to get a flat tum - the best way to do it is cut back on junk and do regular cardio combined with crunches. I spent all my teenage years crash dieting and going through phases where I did a zillion crunches a day, but I still had a pudgy belly. It is only in the last couple of years that I started work, joined a gym and stopped eating quite as much crap as I used to. Now I have a toned tum, the one thing I spent all my teenage years wanting. It is a good idea to get into the habit of doing regular exercise when you are a teenager, it will help you as you get older. Start good habits now! Don't skip meals, just exercise, don't pig out on chips and cakes and you will get the toned tum you want.
Replyfor my honest opinion i would say your overweight.
i am 5' 5'' and i weight 105 lbs.
also my friend is 5' 1'' and she weights 91 lbs.
so your a bit over the line!

Replycheck body mass calculators too!
[use the ones especially for teens if you are one]
ReplyAnon, both you and your friend are very underweight.
Replyhello my name is catherine i am 13 years old 5 feet 3 inches and 150 pounds people say that i look like im skinny but i have stretch marks everywhere like on my thighs, stomach, and etc......
Replyplease help me what should i do????
i want to lose 30 pounds in 1 month
please help me
To loose weight do a sport or two. Even if you dont like them their fun for most people and you can loose alot of weight. Drink juices, water, and milk. Try not to drink anything else. For breakfast have something like Special K or Cheerios. Eat as much as you can at meals so you dont have to eat many snacks.
ReplyCatherine, I disagree with part of Krista's advice. Don't stuff yourself at meals. Eat 6x a day, about 3h or so, and eat until you're not hungry but are not stuffed either. Don't eat processed foods like Special K or Cheerios. Eat real stuff. Milk, oatmeal, meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts. Stuff from the farm, not stuff from the factory.
Now on to the weight loss. You cannot lose 30lb in a month in any healthy way. It would be a terrible goal. Second, you don't really have 30lb to lose. And focusing on number goals like that is pretty silly. Why don't you focus on dropping 1 dress size? That is realistic. But don't put a hard to achieve deadline like "in 1 month" there. Just exercise, eat healthy, and it will happen.
As for the stretch marks, some of us just have them. It is genetic. They'll fade with time, and if it really bothers you, a dermatologist can prescribe stuff that makes them fade faster. If you use self-tanner on them it disguises them too - but don't get a real tan, that only makes them stand out more.
ReplyI'm "5'6" and weigh 112 lbs. I'm in Lakewood Highschool and alot of people tell me i'm skinny & tall, but i don't think i am. It's impossible to find pants in my size. Like they don't sell tall pants in my size. Why do feel like i'm fat?
Replyandrew,
my heart goes out to you. as a boy it must be really tough to be overweight, as most boys eat a lot and you can't. it's great that you have realised you need to lose weight. you need to do some exercise - try going for a run for half an hour without stopping every day. it's not much time, and it'll get much easier, and that podgy belly will go in no time, if you combine this with eating healthily (ie no junk, lots of meat and veg, less potatoes and pasta. please lose some weight now, because chubby little boys are SO much cuter than lardarsey men with huge jelly-bellies. if it's any consolation, I (a 110 pound 5foot 4 girl with a 32DD chest) am totally in love with my boyfriend who has a really podgy stomach, but in my opinion that makes him all soft and cute to cuddle lots!
ReplyHi I am 13 years old, 5foot 5 and I weigh 10 stone which I think is around 100pouns. I dont think that this is too bad although I have horrible stomach, and man bobes, I eat healthy and get lots and lots of exercise what can I do
Replysorry i meant 140 pounds my mistake
Replyhi i'm 17 years old and i'm really tired of being skinny. I hate looking at my self. It's hard to shop for pants cause i barely fit in to some so i don't wear pants at all. I would love it if i could fit into jeans and look good and confident about it. My legs thighs are way to skinny. I look like i'm 15 so underwieght and i hate it. and plus my hips aren't so wide either.
ReplyAlyssa, try eating 6x a day, eating more protein (not crazy amounts, just a couple eggs for breakfast, and 4 or 5 ounces of meat, fish, or chicken for dinner and lunch), and start weight training. You're blessed with a good metabolism, you can get in excellent shape easily, so don't hate that you're thin.

Replyi am gaining weight which i've always wanted to weigh at least 120lbs. but it seems to be going all to my stomache and i don't know what to do as far as keeping my weight in other places but loosing it in my stomache please if you have any infomation on how to loose my weight in my stomache area please let me know.
Replynatoya, I think the answer you're looking for here is exercise. That will help change the shape of your body. It is the only thing that can do that, there is no diet that will reduce weight just from the stomach or something like that.
ReplyI am 13. 5'2 and Im not really sure how much I weigh.
But anyway I have thighs and calves that are kind of big and Im not imagining this because people have told me this. Even some of my teachers has said Im not as skinny as before. I think they are normal sized but I don't want them to get bigger! So I'm asking what to do. Well I don't eat healthy and I know I should but I have almost no control over what I eat because - I don't cook in the family and when I do its a very limited selection and then school foodthey "Claim" its nutritional well enough said. I just want an excersise I can do at my age and maybe some suggestions on healthier foods.
ReplyHelp, first of all, to know whether you are imagining it or not, it would be helpful to know how much you weigh.
As for the calves and thighs getting bigger, you are 13. You're growing into a woman. You will not keep the same childish shape you had before, you'll now have curves. And yes, that includes the thighs getting bigger. Female legs are different from young girl legs in shape, for people of any weight.
Now, on to food. I'm not sure what your parents serve you, but it might be pretty healthy already. Of course, if their idea of family dinner is to call Domino's, that is not the case. For breakfast, it is easy to cook or fix something healthy for yourself, stuff like yogurt with fruit and cereal, or some eggs with whole wheat toast, or oatmeal. You can pack some fruit and/or vegetables, like baby carrots or celery, to take to school to eat as a snack, or make a good snack for yourself when you get home. At school, try to stay away from the fried stuff and get some sort of meat/chicken/fish for protein, some vegetables if they are not all in the form of chips, hahaha (a lot of schools don't seem to have real vegetables), and then some carb, like potato, bread, rice, pasta, whatever they have.
If what your family serves you at night is the "calling Domino's" type of food, the 2 easiest foods you can make that are healthy and easy are salads and sandwiches. For salad you just buy the vegetables, wash and cut them or microwave if they are stuff like potatoes, that you can't eat raw, then add something for protein (canned tuna, canned shredded chicken, smoked turkey breast, cottage cheese or other kinds of cheese that you've diced, chopped hard-boiled eggs, anything) and dress with some olive oil and eat. Be creative or get some recipes online (www.allrecipes.com is good) Fruit is good in salad too, and so are nuts. Start with lettuce or other leafy stuff, like spinach, and then try stuff out. I made what sounds like a bizarre salad one day: spinach, chicken, and strawberries, dressed with vinegar, and it was delicious. For sandwiches, just get some whole-wheat bread or pita and fill it up with protein and vegetables. All of these you can make quickly without making a big mess in the kitchen.
For exercise, if you don't like any sport, you can try walking, biking, swimming, or dancing (DDR or just around in your room). Just stay active. If you have to do chores, offer to do the more physical ones, like sweeping and gardening, and not the "standing still" ones like washing the dishes. If you don't like "just going for a walk" (I don't) then walk with a purpose, walk to the mall or the post office or whatever.
ReplyI'm 14, 5'2'' and i'm 135 pounds and no matter what i do i can't lose weight. i have huge thighs. They are 21.5 inches around. All my weight goes to my stomach and thighs and it makes me look bigger than i am. I have stretch marks all over my thighs. they go all the way around. i have them in my stomach too. I don't know what to do.
ReplyI am 13 years old. I weight at least 126lbs and 55kg. I have tried eating healthily, i take and apple this flavoured water sandwhiches and a small chocolate or packet of sweets, they are tiny. I do excercise whenever I can. I want to diet but my mum wont let me. I have cut my breakfast down by a bit and i feel fine, I dont feel like going back for more. Sometimes when I eat something I feel really FAT and I feel like I wanna be sick, just to get it out of my system. Why do I keep feeling like this? If anyone has any tips to help, please let me know.
ReplyAt my school they do interform games, I took part in the netball one at lunch time in stead of just sitting down somewhere. I was doing something that I liked but also doing that was also helping me loose a bit of weight and people were watching and I thought they would have said something but no-one did after all.
ReplyDon't Have One, you're not actually overweight. Also, 21.5" for a thigh measurement is not really huge. The problem is, we see people with toothpick legs on tv and magazines all the time and they tell us that is the only thing that is beautiful, but in reality, there are people with different body types.
Since you are unhappy with your shape, the best thing to do is to exercise. It not only changes your shape but also makes you see your body as a moving thing, not as a statue to be stared at. Once you are concerned with how fast or far you can run or throw a ball, things like thigh measurements become unimportant.
Stretch marks are just one of those things that some people have and some don't. It is genetical. They will fade away with time. If you are really concerned with them and you have medical insurance and can see a dermatologist, they can prescribe creams (similar to acne creams) that make them fade a bit faster. If you are going to be in a bathing suit or something and want to disguise them, self-tanner does that. Getting a real tan on the other hand only makes it worse, cause it darkens your skin but leaves them white/red, so they stand out more.
Secret, you are not overweight, not even if you are 5' tall. Your mom is right not to let you diet. If you want to eat healthily, as in not eating junk, I'm all for that cause everyone could benefit from that. But controlling amounts is really not something people who are not overweight should do. They should eat until they are satisfied.
Taking part in the game was a good thing, and it also showed you that although we are concerned with every tiny thing about ourselves, other people aren't. They have their own lives to worry about.
I'm concerned with you feeling fat when you eat. Do you have access to a counselor, at school or something? I really think you'd benefit from talking to someone. Meanwhile, visit www.something-fishy.com It is a very good site and it can help with those feelings. Good luck.

ReplyHeyaaa ! Im 13 And Am 5ft5" And Weigh 135 pounds. I Have A Nice Taut Stomach But My Calves An Thighs Let me Down ! I Like Having A Big Bum But I Want Skinny Legs ! I Want To Keep The Muscle There Because I Am Quite Fast ! Please Tell The Most Effective Way To Lose Weight On My Legs? Thanking Yooh
ReplyBRla 1:
115lb is not overweight unless you are like 4'8" tall. You gained weight cause you are growing and developing. You do not need to lose weight. Walking around or any other form of exercise and activity are good for you, and so is eating healthy foods (stuff that comes from the farm, not the factory), but do not worry about your weight. You are not overweight.
Abbi:
At 5'5" and 135lb, you are not overweight either. What you think is a "big bum" and "big legs" are just in your mind. Just because we see toothpick legs on magazines and tv all the time doesn't mean that is what is healthy or good or even what most people find attractive. There is no way to lose weight just on one part of your body, and you really don't have weight to lose. Stay active and eat healthy and you'll be fine.
Replyi am about to turn 13 and i weigh 73 pounds i am 5'2 .............is that normal?
Reply(nungiven), that is so underweight I'm concerned for your health. Please go see a doctor soon. I don't mean a shrink or therapist, I mean a doctor with a stethoscope to give you a physical. You need it to happen as soon as possible.
ReplyI am 13 years old and weigh 108, and I am either 5'4 or 5'6 am I over weight?
Replyim 12 i weigh 190 pounds help im so ugly and fat my 17 year old cousin weighs less then me (151.3)im the fattest peorson ever i need your help so much. ive tried every thing it doesnt work. please i want to weigh 120 pounds by the end of the year!!!!!!
ReplyHey I am 12 and I am 5'6''. I weigh 121 pounds, is that normal? Please, honestly, tell me what you think people.
ReplySarah, you are pretty underweight.
Caitlin, you should try to talk to a doctor. But eating healthy food - natural stuff, not manufactured stuff, and exercising should work anyway.
LindseyRenee, your weight is on the low side of normal, in fact.
So Sarah and LindseyRenee, I'm gonna address you together since you are both not fat in any way - you are below normal weight - and you are both concerned you may be fat. I think that you are letting photoshopped and starved celebrities mess up with your minds of what normal is. Nicole Richie etc. are not what normal or healthy is.
ReplyI forgot to say, Caitlin: you are not ugly, and it doesn't matter how much your cousin weighs either. You are much more than your weight. What makes a person ugly is how they are on the inside, not how much they weigh.
Replyi am 13 i am 5'7'' i weigh 175 help me
ReplyHELP, try to be active (do a sport or go walking or biking - something like that) everyday and try not to eat processed foods (stuff that comes prepackaged, whatever it is). So for ex. instead of eating chips, eat a real potato, and so on. That should be enough to make you lose weight. No natural foods are off-limits, just avoid the manufactured stuff as much as you can.
ReplyFirst, i would like to say that whoever that John dude is, he is an ass hole!!! John has no right to tell girls to stick their fingers down their throat, because many girls die doing that. Second i was wondering if any one has any tips for me. I'm 13 years old and i will turn 14 in 3 months. I'm a tipe one diabetic and i have a very bad thyroid problem. i weight 150 pounds and i'm 4feet 11inches tall. Since i have a bad thyroid problem and i am a diabetic it is very hard to loose weight. I have tried many diets and exersise plans. I'm on my schools dance team and i exersise for 30 minutes every day. My doctor told me that i'm over weight and that i should weight between 90 and 105 pounds but no matter what i try the weight won't go down. i mean, i don't look like i weight more that 130 pounds but with my formal dance comming up in may and my freshman year comming up in august i want to loose 50 pounds and i want to fit in a size 3 in a dress instead of a 8. can someone please help me and give me the best way to loose 50 pounds.HHHEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

Replyyeah but what do i do in the winter time
Jan thanks 4 the advice but what exercise or sport can i do in the winter
ReplyHELP - DDR, or dancing around in your room, or an exercise tape are good solutions when the weather is terrible. Or buy a stationary bike. Look at garage sales and bulletin boards at your local grocery store, etc. A lot of people get rid of theirs that they never use and will sell it for like $10.
Now Dani, I think I can actually help. First of all, the whole "size 3 instead of an 8" probably won't happen, and I'll tell you why. Odd sizes are juniors, even ones are women's. If you now fit into an 8, and not an 11, you already developed, so kiss the junior sizes goodbye forever. You can fit into a 6, though. Now on to the diabetes and thyroid problems. First, diabetes. Although you are type I, it is possible you have developed insulin resistance (which is usually associated with Type II) as well. Besides keeping your blood sugars stable, what you can do to help is to try to eat lower glycemic carbs. So no white stuff, no sugar, always eaten with some protein and fat.
Thyroid: I assume you are on meds for it. But a lot of times, doctors don't do the right tests, so they don't keep your meds properly adjusted either. It is kind of like, imagine if they were trying to adjust your insulin just based on the blood sugar, without having the Ac1 test - it would be guesswork. And that is what they usually do for thyroid. You need to have TSH tested (the one they always test), but you also need to have the real thyroid hormones, T3 and T4 tested, and you need the *free* values of those. Cause those are the real active hormones that do anything. I have a thyroid disorder too and I can tell you that unless you have the free T3 and T4 in the normal range (and not at the very bottom of it either, at about half of the normal, like real normal people with no thyroid problems have) you can exercise all day and have a perfect diet only to lose 1 pound after 6 weeks. In other words, there is no way it is gonna work unless these are at good levels.
Once they are at good levels, you might want to cut off the high glycemic carbs and eat more protein. Luckily, it is the very same advice that works for the diabetes, so you're killing 2 birds with 1 stone here. Then you can add some resistance training to your routine, with weights or an exercise tape. Resistance training raises metabolism much more than aerobics do, and as you know, people with thyroid problems have very slow metabolisms, so we need all the help we can get.
ReplyWow! I can't believe everyone feels just as insecure about their weight as I do! Yet I'm reading all these posts and thinking that YOU ARE ALL CRAZY! I mean 13 and 14 year olds fretting about their weight! But I was the same way when I was going through puberty and my insecurity about my body image led me to a four year battle with anorexia which still haunts me to this day.
ReplyJan, you seem to be offering very helpful advice!
Back to me though, I am 20, a recovering anorexic and my worst fears are coming true. Since entering college I have gained a lot of weight. Last year, when I entered college I weighed 105 pounds, (I'm 5'5") and, now a year later I'm at 125 lbs. I have struggled to keep it from going above this and I habitually binge eat.
Worst of all, I have stopped running everyday, my biggest passion. I just don't have the motivation. My body image and confidence are dwindling and my weight is increasing every week. I need some help, or inspiration, please.
Good luck to all of you, my blessings and support...just know, you're not alone! Remember that in order to attain true beauty you must be healthy and good to your body.
i weigh 125 and i am 5"2 and everyone in my grade weighs around 100 and i feel like an outcast even though i am popular i just need help on losing weight
ReplyOkay, well, I am thirteen, 5'7" or 5'8" and weigh 143. It is around winter and I am NOT going to stay in all summer when the local pool is open. I need some weight loss tips.
