Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Hey, I'm 14, 175cm and I weigh 64kgs.
I need to lose maybe just onr or two pounds... I don't want to be one of those ultra-thin girls, can anyone recommend a good diet that doesn't require me to go to the gym (I'm too young) or go on a diet (diets at my age are a bit silly)? If anyone has a good exercise technique I can do before bed or something, please email me at jojolydsieandbean@hotmail.com
Thanks!!

Jessica, ask your doctor to recommend you a diet and exercise that is safe for you. With your blood pressure problem, it is important to do what he/she advises you to do, and not just follow strangers' advice on the internet. What can be perfectly safe for a healthy person may put you at risk.

Hey im 12 almost 13 and im really over weight. i weigh almost 200 lbs. and can't take it any more. the name calling really hurts and in the summer time i cant even wear a bathing suit with out not feeling comfotable in my own skin. im scared that i might die of heart problems and not breathing. i really want to just lose some weight. Im popular but i aint never had a boyfriend. Could someone please help me?

Court, I'm sorry people namecall. That is not right, and it doesn't help. Try to stay active and to eat "real foods" (not fast food or junk that comes pre-packaged). Whole grains, lean meats and fish, vegetables, fruit, skim dairy, legumes, and a bit of fat is necessary too - not fried stuff, but some nuts or some olive oil on your salad or vegetables. It is pretty simple really - instead of potato chips, have a baked potato - a real potato, not something packaged. Eat enough not to be hungry, but not to be stuffed either. Have 5 or 6 small meals a day, if possible, instead of just 3. And try to stay active by walking or doing a sport or activity you enjoy, or dancing around in your room, playing DDR, doing an exercise tape if you don't wanna exercise outdoors.

My name is Jasmine. Right now I weight 195lbs. and I am only 13! I have tried reading alot about weight management and nothing seems to work! I have tried laxatives, binging, and purging. I make up all these weight loss plans and they only work for about 3 days. It seems impossible to manage school life with at home life. i want to eat less but I eat foods at school that I know arent healthy. Please some one help me. My email is MizzHGMSCutie@hotmail.com. P.s. leave your email and we can become friends. If you would like, I need a fat friend. No affence to any one.

Jasmine, instead of trying the things you've tried, have you considered talking to your doctor, or simply not eating any junk food or fast food or anything fried or that contains sugar in it, and exercising? I'm pretty sure that would work.

Hey im 6'0" and i weight about 145lbs and i want to badly gain more and have a bigger body mass. Is there anyway i can do this and i know that i have a high metabolism so please help.

Reply
Jan

Beau: keep exercising, esp. weight training, and make sure to eat plenty in 6 meals a day - but of healthy foods, real foods. Don't fall for those weight gainers, they are just packaged sugar. You'll put on mass, don't worry.

Danielle, skipping lunch and having an apple instead is not a good strategy. Why don't you just stop eating "everything you want" like crisps chocolate and stuff like that, and eat enough until you're not hungry but not stuffed, but of real foods, you know, fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, grains?

As for the running, why don't you try to go walking on the days you don't swim or horseback ride? That will help you get in shape for the runs at school, so that you don't get stitches when you run.

I used to be pretty skinny when I was small. Then out of no where i slowly started to gain weight. I stopped doing cross country that could have been it. Anyways i slowly gained weight. By the 5th grade i was kind of chubby but not massively overweight. I started to try some diets but none ever worked. After i was discouraged by breaking them i would start to binge and eat like crazy. Then would start again. This continued and still does. Now i am 14 and weigh 210 (5' 9) can someone give me some suggestions..thanks : )

Noname, since your problem is with binging, maybe you can talk to a doctor, or join a support group? There are books that help on the subject too. I'd recommend "Overcome Overeating" by Jane Hirschmann and Carol Munter.

hi im 14 and about 5'4 or 5'5 i weight nearly ten stone and have really huge theighs and my belly is flabby i need to lose wight but its so hard, when there is all that junk food, i really wanna tone up to as well as lose weight wat excersises can i do a day to lose weight nicole xx

Nicole, first of all, you are not fat. You do not have huge thighs and a flabby belly. That is all in your mind. You are 5'4"-5'5" and less than 140lb (10 stone). That is not overweight anyway you slice it, even if you weigh the full 10 stone.

Now, you do have one thing right: eating junk food is bad for you, regardless of weight. It will ruin your health. As for exercise, start an activity you like, like biking, dancing, swimming, and try to do it at least 3x a week, preferably 6x, for at least 40m at a time. If you are not particularly interested in any activity or sport, then try just walking - to school, or going for a walk.

Hi
I'm 13 I weigh 95 pounds and I'm 5'1. I know people think I'm really skinny but I have fatty thighs and calfs and a disproportionate butt. My thighs "jiggle" whenever i step. What can I do to tighten my thighs, calfs and butt?

Reply
Robin

I have a slim figure but like I said big jiggly thighs and calfs and a big butt compared to the rest of my body. I dont eat all that well and dont excercise but I cant seem to get in the habit of it. If anyone has any siggestions please say something.

ok i know i have two comments already but this is the last one. My sister is 16 and in theatre dance at her school. I have been doing crunches with her for a couple days but that doesnt help my problem, or does it? What can I do to fix my problem and how can I motivated to excercise each day? Someone please help me!

Robin: First, take note that the thighs have very large muscles which can shake when you step, no matter how lean you get. You can't keep the muscle completely rigid all the time.

Now, for building better legs, you have two options. One is to lose fat until you lose fat on whatever area you want to lose from. Your body chooses where it's going to lose fat from next, so it could potentially be a while before it gets to your lower body.

The other is to train the muscles in the leg. For training your butt, I recommend the barbell back squat and leg presses. People generally regard these as exercises for the quadriceps, but I think they're only good for building your glutes. For the hamstrings, seated, lying, or standing leg curls are about all you can do. For the quadriceps, leg extensions and hack squats are what I use. For the hack squat, go all the way down so that your ankles touch your butt. This will develop the bottom part of the quadriceps, helping to create the illusion of slender legs. Otherwise, your thighs will develop a turnip shape. For the calves, which are probably my favorite thing to train, you should train both the gastrocnemius and soleus. The seated calf raise will hit the soleus, and standing and donkey calf raises will hit the gastrocnemius.

Robin, Ryan gave good exercise advice. And your thighs are not fat or jiggly, it is all in your mind. That said, you should exercise cause everyone should.

Kelsey, people are built differently and you are right, getting your period, especially getting your period earlier than most of your friends, can make you prone to being bigger. You are not fat at all, but if you are still gaining, you are right to be a bit concerned with it.

First, food. Keep eating well. Real foods, not packaged stuff, enough not to be hungry, but not to be stuff, every 3h if possible. You know, breakfast-snack-lunch-snack-dinner-snack. As for sports, I hear you. I don't really like any sports either. But you can make time for an activity, like walking, or biking, or swimming, or dancing (playing DDR or just around in your room, doesn't have to be a class or anything). 30 or 40m everyday is plenty. I know it is hard to make the time, but once you start exercising, you'll sleep better and in turn, concentrate better when you are studying, so you'll be more productive and more than make up for the time you exercised.

Most of all, don't stress about it. I know exactly how you feel, you could be describing me when I was a teen, when you talked about yourself. Early period, no interest in sports, friends with amazing metabolisms, and being naturally thicker, esp. on the legs. It is hard not to compare yourself to other girls who are built like sticks, I know, but you are fine as you are. Doesn't matter how much tv and magazines try to say that the only good shape is model-thin, in the real world, there are more people who think Mariah Carey is hot than who think Kate Moss is hot.

Ryan: I know those would be good exercises but I dont have the equipment for them. What execises could i do that i could do without any special equipment?

Reply
Ryan

Robin: Hmmm. Well, squats don't have to be performed with weight. Just stand up straight, put your hands behind your head, and squat down. Use the most narrow stance you can hold squatting all the way down. I sometimes use this in the middle of the day to get my blood pumping. The squat is a compound exercise, so it hits more than one muscle. It will hit your butt, quads, hamstrings and calves. For specific calf training, you can do standing calf raises without weight.

Robin, Ryan gave good exercise. Then, after a while, try to buy the little dumbbell bars that you can stack weight plates on. They are small, contrary to a big squat bar, and cheap too. Then you just hold them in your hands as you do squats, calf raises, etc. And you can lower the amount of weight used to use them for leg exercises too. I trained at home for 1 year with just dumbbells, and it works very well.

I am only 12 years old and i weigh a wopping 142 pounds. I try to cut back on the big portions and most of the time i dont even eat lunch but i still havent seen any change. I sometimes get jealous of my friends slim petite figures. Does any one have any suggestions?

Reply
Jan

david, congrats on staying fit.

Anonymous, how tall are you? If you are over 5'5", 142lb is not whopping at all, for starters. If you are shorter, then it is on the top/above the HWR, but the range is just a suggestion for strters.

Not eating lunch is not a good idea to lose weight. Try to eat until you are not hungry, but not so much that you are stuffed, every 3h or so. And do not eat packaged/processed foods, try to eat real foods, like fish, meats, fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy. Stuff that comes from the farm, not from the factory.

Also important is to stay active. Start a sport or activity you like and do it everyday for at least 30m. If you don't really like sports, it can be walking, biking, or dancing around in your room to the radio or playing DDR. Anything that gets you moving, for 30m to 1h a day.

hey there slim quick,

I'm sorry to hear that you weigh 3 times as much as i do.
If you would stop eating period for like 3 months you might lose some weight. at least your exercising your fingers on the computer and with the tv remote. try to exercise your fat roles by shaking them vigorously. if that doesn't work your parents are going to have to buy you a crane to move you around. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR PARENTS FOOD BILL!!!!!!!!

I found this site helpful in determing a teens weight...as I was concerned with my sons weight...the site talks about the changes for a teen going thru puberty etc plus remember not all teens go thru puberty at the same time not to mention those who are into sports VS those who are not (or are who are not active) and there is a body mass index tool there to help you ...hope this helps ...

Kim, weight training, eating 6x a day instead of 3x, and consuming plenty of fiber all boost up metabolism.
