Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Play DDR it helps, but eating right adds a lot to the weight loss- you can play longer b/c you have more energy from healthy foods

lia, you're at a good weight. You don't need to lose weight at all. If you're unhappy with your body, try exercising.

I am 13 year old guy and I am 5'7 and I weigh like 170Ibs. I need to lose 20Ib. My selfasteam is going down the drain. I have an ugly belly that looks awful on all my cloths. I am swamped with school work and have absolutly NO time to exercise. What other things can I do to lose weight. Die pills might work because I don't have musch time to do anything. Please help!!!!!

Reply
Jan

Philip: if parents of 3 who work 2 jobs can exercise, so can you. Walk or bike to school instead of taking the bus is a good start. And you're still growing, please don't take diet pills or restrict food intake (it is ok to stop eating junk, but not to go hungry).

Reply
Philip Wakefield

I am homschooled, and my parents don't exercise. So it is kinda hard to exercise when homeschool requires you to stay home all day.

Reply
Jan

Phil, homeschool should only require you to stay home studying during regular study hours (9 to 3) and maybe a couple more hours for homework. It should not take every waking hour you have. If your parents don't want you to leave the house, what about playing some DDR (assuming they are not against videogames) or doing an exercise tape/dvd?

Reply
Philip Wakefield

trust me, it is harder than you think. The classes I have are online and work simular to a way a college does classes. I have classes and assignments all the time all day. BTW, I tried ddr, I am not good at it (tried for a month). I do have an ABB lounge, but it isn't helping me. I tried a few diets with no success. It seems pretty hopeless at this point.

Reply
Jan

Philip, it is not hopeless, and everyone's lives are hard. Studying is hard, working is hard, imagine people who do both at once and keep a house and have bills to pay and kids to take care of? But you're making excuses. "My school work is too hard, I can't exercise". You're focusing just on your mind and letting your body rot away. You're way too young for that. Exercise is necessary not for self-punishment with weight loss as a goal, but to keep yourself healthy. If you exercised, you'd sleep better and have better concentration for your school work. Same goes for a good diet. Since your parents don't exercise, I'm gonna hazard a guess that they are not particular about a good diet either. That might be your problem right there. Bad food + no exercise = diminished concentration.

Reply
Philip Wakefield

Well, thank you all for your help. I agree with the guess you made. I think I need better food and more exerciseing. My dad is kinda trying to make healthier food, but I don't think it is working I need to find the best time to ecercise since my scedulal is very vibrant.

I also forgot to meantion that I don't have a sweet tooth for vegtibles. I is way too plain to me. It is ganna be a hard trip to become skinny.

Mmm I don't know about your particular schedule, but busy people usually have 2 times of the day to exercise: as soon as they wake up, or after/before dinner, after the day is over. Going for a walk on a nice day and doing a tape on a day with bad weather is enough. If you take 30m everyday, that is plenty.

Vegetables are plain, but you can find ways to dress up so they taste good to you. I grew up eating crap only, and had to learn to like them (any vegetables I was fed were usually smothered in cheese...). For salad type vegetables, I like balsamic vinegar, a bit of olive oil, and some herbs or a Mrs. Dash type seasoning. If you prefer a creamy dressing, there are low-fat ones out there too. For the types you cook, like spinach, carrots (ok, those can be salad too, but on cold days, I just don't feel like salad), zucchini, I usually cook them with garlic, salt, and a bit of olive oil. And when I really can't bear the thought of "eating vegetables" (the usual 1 meat + potatoes or rice + salad or side of veggies) I "disguise" them in my food, in something like a stir fry, or just chopping them up, microwaving, and mixing it with the meat and potatoes or rice to "make a casserole-type dish for one". Did I mention my husband doesn't really eat vegetables? So this whole "add vegetables to my plate only" thing is pretty routine in my house.

im a 17 year old young lady and i currently weight 205 pounds and stand 5'4. it's really hard for me to go out and buy clothes that i like that fit. i live my life wearing track pants and hoodie. i may look comfy..but i don't feel it. i am currently in a cardio kick bixing class and yeah it does help but as soon as i tae the weight off...it goe right back on with a few extra..i have a pop belly that is hanging on for dear-life..and it's embarrassing..i need some real help...can anyone help me?

Reply
Jan

Carliegh, you're doing a good job by exercising. What your experience has shown is that if you go on a temporary diet then go back to eating the way you did when you were fat - you're gonna get fat again. So instead of a really restrictive diet that will drive you crazy after a short while, try to eat healthy, avoiding junk etc. (same advice I gave to fattgirl) but do NOT starve yourself. Don't go hungry. Eat enough to be satisfied, but not stuffed and sick after eating, just make sure to eat the good foods and stay active. Since you're 17 already and you have access to a gym, you could try incorporating some weight training into your routines, on the days you don't do the cardio kickboxing. That will increase your metabolism and help keep the weight off.

HI, umm i am writing this because i am a fourteen year old girl who weighs 122 pounds at 5'7 i think its normal and my lifestyle is really active. I have done every sport imaginable and i believe it does help. I still sorta have a little belly though. And it bothers me. It dosent nessaceraly bother me but its kinda weird because all my friends are really pretty and some say i am too but they are less than a size two and still in the little kid sizes of 14.16ect.i used to be chubbier than what i am at now but i think i grew it out. so some of you will just have to wait. but i am writing this because i want to lose some weight big time but i dont want to become anerexic or anything i find that skinny really gross. so if youve got ideas i would appreciate it

TKM, at your height and weight, you definitely don't have enough fat to have a belly. It is either in your mind, or an illusion caused by bad posture. I bet your mom or grandma give you that annoying "stand up straight" advice... well, I'm about to give you the same advice, and add: sit up straight too. No matter how skinny you are, if you slouch, it will appear you have a belly.

Assuming you already have good posture (ask your mom if you're in doubt), then it is all in your mind. We often see ourselves as much bigger than we really are, and our friends as much smaller. But here is a secret: they are doing the exact same thing as you, agonizing cause you're smaller than they are. It is hard to have an accurate perception of our size, we are too hard on ourselves. But I'm going to tell you, you're not fat at all. Not even chubby. Nothing like that. You might have moved on to juniors while your friends are still in kids sizes simply because you're taller or more athletic than they are. I can't imagine size 16 kids fitting a girl who's 5'7" - all pants would turn into capris, haha. So relax about that.

i'm 13 years old and i think i'm 5'6 or 5'7 and i weigh 134 lbs. I wear a 10 in juniors. I want to get down to a 8 or a 6. How can i lose weight when i have so much to do during the week?

Reply
Jan

Blair, you're not overweight, but if you want to fit into a smaller size, you have to try to do some sort of physical activity, if you don't, already. If you do, try to do a different activity on other days. A sport, biking, going for a walk, swimming, an exercise tape if you can't get out of the house, dancing around in your room, anything.

And although you don't need to lose weight, eating real foods and not junk is good advice to everyone.

i'm 12 years old,i really want to become a cheerleader but i weigh 150 pounds and i don't know how to do splits can someone please help me on how to lose a lot of weight ppppppllllleeeeeeaaassssseeee

Reply
Jan

Lakeshia, just make sure to eat right - no junk, just regular food - fruits, vegetables, carbs like bread, rice or potatoes (not fried, of course), milk, yogurt, meats (again, not fried - you want grilled or baked chicken, not chicken nuggets), fish, the stuff we all know is good for you. And exercise. Cheerleaders have to be in shape. Walking, biking, swimming, dancing (very important for cheerleading), doing a lot of stretches for flexibility, or any sport you like. Try to do some form of activity every day or 6x a week, for around 40m.

I am a sprinter on track and I do situps every night, but I am only 5 feet tall and weigh 125. My BMI is 24.5 or around there. How should I eat to lose weight but not be skinny? I hate most vegetables and I LOVE chocolate and junk food.

Reply
Jan

eao, the stretch marks will fade with time. It helps to keep skin moisturized, but don't worry too much about them. A lot of people have them. I have a ton of them and the ones I got as a teen are barely noticeable. If it bothers you when you wear a bathing suit or something, use self-tanner - real tanning makes them more visible, but self-tanner paints your whole skin the same color, so they disappear. And besides, it is healthier to use self-tanner + use sunblock when you're in the sun than to actually tan.

Emily, you're at a good weight, but you can try resistance training too. If you don't have access to a gym, get an exercise tape to work your whole body too. And as for the situps, you could try doing them every other day instead. Muscle develops when you rest them, not when you work them, so working them every day is not recommended (same for resistance training with a tape or weights).

Emily

The thing is, I have some muscle, I just want to get rid of fat. Also, any tips on diet?

Reply
Jan

To get rid of fat, you need to speed up metabolism - that is where the resistance training comes in.

For diet, try to eat small meals (5-6 a day) instead of 3 big ones, and don't eat junk or fast food. Eat the regular stuff: fruits, vegetables, skim dairy, carb like rice (brown if possible), beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bread (whole-grain if possible), pasta (again, whole-grain if possible), lean meats (grilled or broiled - don't exclude red meats, just don't eat any visible fat), good fats from avocado, nuts, olive oil. For the 2 main meals of the day, make sure to combine a serving of meat, a serving of carb, and 3-4 servings of vegetables, with a bit of fat (fat is necessary too, you just don't a want a lot of it, but a couple tsp olive oil on your salad or vegetables are good).

Reply

Mary, I think your problem could be that when you eat healthy you eat too little food, so you get hungry and turn to junk. Make sure to eat as much healthy food as you need not to go hungry.

Goal setting, visualization, and talking with yourself positively. This is all detailed in the book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. It has what I think is the best treatment of the subject.

Emily: To further what Jan said, focus on heavy leg and back work. They are very large muscle groups and can really rev your metabolism while healing up from your training sessions. Though squats are in 95% of cases a big no-no for men, women can do them without much worry. The deadlift is another good exercise to look into. Both of these require very good form though, so ask someone about how to perform them properly. Other compound lifts will work too, but those two will probably do the most for you.

Other people who may be reading this, be careful about the use of compounds. They should only be used by powerlifters or people who are trying to lose weight and don't really care what their physique looks like. Any men out there thinking of developing a real physique, stick with isolation. Women don't have the same potential for building muscle, so they don't need to worry as much about this.
