Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise
Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.
Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.
We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Replyhey danni,
Replywell....I'M 18, 5'7 AND 119LB! i'M NOT GONNA LIE...I'M PRETTY FIT......BUT ANYWAYS...if ure like really overweight and need serious weight loss....ALL U HAVE 2 DO IS JUST EAT SALAD WITH WHITE CHICKEN(to keep u full)!! Don't eat ANYTHING...passed 6:oopm!!! TRUST ME....in a month u'll lose like anywhere from 25-30 LB!!! PPl always say EXERCIZE...thats total BSSSSSSS!!! everything depends on what u eat!!! CUT out sweets and carbs....it may seem like its unhealthy...but if ur only going on the diet for serious weight-loss LIKE A FEW MONTHS.....its not going RUIN R HEALTH!!!! EATING ONLYYYY SALAD WORKS......AND U DONT NEED TO RUN LIKE 10 MILES EVERYDAY 2 LOSE WEIGHT....THATS bs!!!
I am 12 and only weigh 70 pounds. I am 5'1". I am the smallest in my class. There is a girl close to my size but she is still 15lbs heavier then me. There is a girl named Jill who is like 130lbs and she picks on me every day. When she sat on me I though I was going to die. I can't gain weight.
Replyhey.im 14 and im a really curvy girl.my stomach is a little big i need to work on the bottom of my abs because the top is flat.i need some help.
ReplyTo lose *cellulite is to weight train and diet. Also u have to incorporate some time of cardio to such as bike, running, kick boxing, etc. But the BIG factor to lose that cellulite is some weight training. SQUATS SQUATS SQUATS. Trust me. Also you have to stop focusing on the scale so much. Muscle weighs more than fat. its easier to see how your jeans fit or how many inches you've lost.
Replyscott,if someone is picking on you and bullying you, talk to your parents. As to this weight matter,if you feel healthy, don't care about gaining weight. But I think drinking milk can help you.Don't worry about being small. When you reach puberty, everything will change.
ReplyI don't know what the big deal is. if you want to lose weight you have to work for it. I weighed 165 and now am 120. It is soo hard but you can do it. EAT BREAKFAST. studies show that women who eat breakfast, weight about ten pounds less than women who dont. Cause if u dont your body goes into a starvation mode and then when you eat dinner you body collects everything and stores it as fat.
ReplyI am 13 years old, 6'2ft, and weigh alot.
Ive known Ive weigh alot, especially in my legs/thighs. Around the April, I checked my weight - 200. I went to the doctors last week - 260.......
Ive wanted to loose weight since 200 and since then, I tried holding back from meals like McDonalds or any fast food stuff. Ive denied any food like that. Ill look at myself and go, Ive gotta loose this weight, Ill do anything. Ill have myself sit there for a good hour and say this over and over. The next day, Ill try some things.... Then stop.
Ive been looking up good ways to eat and excerise but I never carry through.
I spend so much time on the computer and video games. Im a computer geek almost, lol. You can ask me to fix anything on it or to beat any game. I love it, infact, I want to become a developer or something when I go through collage. I have it planned.
Im really smart, I have a 95+ average since 4rth grade and Ive kept it till this 7th and now going into 8th next week. In school, every flaw in everybody is recognized and criticised, if parents/teachers/whoever knows it or not, youl always have these 3-8 kids who think they are rulers in every class. Of course, these are the ones who'll knock you all the time and guess who they love to do it to - me. I wanna show them whose the boss, whose better by loosing this weight.
I used to do baseball, but quit that. Then I did swimming which I also quit, even though Im really good at it, I weigh so much, Im a whale in the water... I did soccer but of course I quit that too. I never really go outside, Ill go swimming in my pool occasionally, but thats it.I have a tredmill which I do alot, and I have a Bowflex but I havent done that in awhile.
Ive planned that this summer I would loose weight, never happened. I plan to do it this school year before I graduate. I really do. Ive been looking up good ways to eat and drink, and some workouts but I would like to have some personal advice from someone. Like what kinds of foods should I eat? I love steak, eggs, pasta, all kinds of fruit, and some vegtables. I take vitamins every night. What kinds and how long of exercises should I do?
Can someone help me!?
Replyhi my name is charlie im 19, i weight 8st 10lbs i dont know how much that is in pounds or kgs. i used to weight nearlly 11st when i was about 16. ive lost nearlly a stone in the last 3 months and i am really chuffed. i have been living away from home in tenerife and i got back a week ago, everyone i see says that i look really good for losing the weight but im really scared that now im am back home i will put it all back on. im determined to lose more. this is the first time in my life that i have felt thin and its great. im not working at the moment but i start college next week which i think will help me stick to a well balanced diet. i know exercise is a big part of losing weight because when i was away i used to walk a least 3 miles a day and eat regular meals and have the occasional treat. i dont want to be stick thin i have never wanted that i just want people to notice me as being thin im hoping to get down to 8st but i think anything under that is silly after all men still like a few curves.

does anyone know what the average or ideal weight for a 14 yr old whos 5'2" is?
ReplyMaddi: 22% body fat is pretty healthy.
ReplyI am 13 I am 5'8" and 153 pounds. I'm not fat Iam very skinny. All my weight goes to my butt. It is bigger than most girls. And I have stretch marks. What should I do.
ReplyStretch marks are a fact of life. The ways of getting rid of them are either ineffective or carry a lot of nasty side effects with them. Prevention is about all you can do; drink plenty of water and get your vitamin E. As for your butt, your body just stores fat there first. If you lose enough weight, it'll eventually come off. Take up a smart weight loss program; I recommend BFFM. Lose no more than 2 pounds per week. At your weight, it won't take long before it goes away.
Also, worry less about what you look like. You are not your face or your body. There are many other things, more important things, that you can be confident about.
Replyhi, i'm 15 and about 172 cm tall and 57 kg. that's with in normal range, but i don't want to be 'normal' i want to be better than that. i just feel fat all the time. especially my butt. i've started going on a eat til you're not hungry diet and no more, no meat and no junk diet. i've been chewing sugar free chewinggum whenever there is the possiblility of me eating something i shouldn't. i do 50 sit-ups, 5 pushups, 40 hip thrusts, weights, chinups running and jumping on the spot every night, but i can't see a difference! it's unfair. i want to have a body like Jennifer Garner or someone like that.
Ryan, seemings you're answering all questions, what is average for me? fat and BMI wise? coz my life sucks.
ReplyWell, as far as BMI goes, you're close to being underweight. But, as you may know, BMI is a bad measure of health. Someone with no muscle but lots of fat can be "normal weight" by the BMI scale. If your gym teachers have a set of calipers, have them measure your body fat percentage. You might also be able to find a place to get hydrostatic weighing. As a woman though you have to be careful about how low your body fat percentage gets. Under about 18% body fat, you could develop amenorrhea (halting of the menstrual cycle). This is a sign that you're taxing your body far too much. If this happens, then you are much too skinny. Never go below 14%.
I wouldn't cut out meat. It's great for your vitality and will help you push harder in the gym. Remember, the word protein means "most important". I recommend 3 cardio workouts a week for 30-45 minutes each time and 3 weight training workouts a week. Make sure to take time off if you start to wear down.
Don't automatically assume that eating less will mean more weight loss. Women seem to think that starving the fat off will work. It will slow down your metabolism though. I'm eating much more than I used to, and I am losing 2 pounds of fat a week. However, I eat natural foods in small meals every 3 hours. There's so much more I can say, but my real recommendation is to buy "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" and follow that. It's only $40, and it's the best fat loss book out there, in my opinion.
ReplyIm Samie im 14 and i tink we should not be so conscience about r weight so just relax and we will get through it. Yes we r over weight, but God well see us through it. Just pray and he well help us, he loves us and always will.
Replylove Samie
hi im brittany. i'm 13 and im 5'4. im pretty skinny because i dance and play soccer but my Butt is big! how can i make it smaller?? should i eat less or is it more excersize? my butt is so big that i have to go up a pant size for them to fit but the waist is too big!! HELP ASAP!
Replybrittany: There's only one way to get rid of it, and that's to lose more weight. I don't suggest eating less. Try to eat more natural food. Also, try to eat small meals every 3 hours you're awake. Finally, if you're not weight lifting already, do it. It'll really boost your metabolism. Again, I don't recommend that you cut calories, as this will slow down your metabolism.
Replyahhhh what is with all you people, especially you young girls? I'm talking bout the ones that don't actually have a weight problem, and are still like omg like all this cellulite on my thighs and omg I have such a huge butt and OMG I'M FAT!!! !! !!!! Look girls, i Know your worried bout your weight coz come on what girl isn't self conscious when she's in her teen stage, but there are people posting on here that have actual weight problems, a little bit chubby or even just fat maybe and would just kill for a body like yours, just remind yourself maybe that you're not like them, and try focus on health. Yeah maybe you don't wana exercise coz it's too much effort andyou don't like fruit and vege and maybe you think carbs and protein are bad, but if you wana keep the weight off, instead of losing it fast but unhealthily then you got exercise, great for toned body, get your fruit and vege and hey carbs and protein arent bad in moderation too
ReplyAnd I'd just like to add, lots of teens do actually have out of proportion bodies when they're growing, and weight fluctuates, if you're a girl then hormones can also affect this, and bloating too (and that comes down to how good your diet is). So yeah it is frustrating maybe you've been living fine and then this weight just comes out of nowhere! In the wrong places! But when you're older it's gona even out and that'll be your normal body. and girls YOUR MEANT TO HAVE FAT ROUND YOUR HIPS AND THIGHS. and butt too. your a GIRL. lol its for your fertility. Yeha if you dont want them fine be a waiflike model but you'll damage your bones your health and your chance to have kids...
Replyso yeah hmm i doubt your as fat as you think, if you're worried about certain body types how bout asking a trainer what exercises target those areas? at the end of the day though you can't actually spot reduce but you can spot tone. you're all stuck with your own individual shape, it's to do with bone structure and since youve got it all your life you may as well like it. and just tone up those wobbly bits if you need to! and live life go have a swim go eat out somtimes have fun coz usually it's only you whos making all those harsh judgements on yourself! bea xxx
and i'm 119.8 pounds currently at 5 foot 5 height i lost 10 pounds in 2 months the healthy way and feel great, not deprived, not thinking bout food all the time and have a toned body, kinda! still gona lose a bit more but yeah ive done the reading on many different sources, you cant just rely on one, i know whats healthy and i know what works! email me goldenangel73@hotmail.com if you want help or sometime to talk to i wana help all your self conscious girls! k ill shut up now bea xxxx
ReplyBea: Indeed, if you get too thin, you can shut down your menstrual cycle and get osteoporosis. However, I'm not sure if it's strictly getting that thin that does it, or getting that thin by severely reducing calories. Anyways, I like what you're saying. Many people like to do it the fast way. I'm glad you're doing it the right way.
ReplyIm 16 and i weight 245 last time i checked im tall with it so i dont really look fat but i want a flat stomach what should i do to see result in like 30 days i need somthing cheap and easy please
ReplyWell, you could always lose fat until the belly fat comes off. That takes time though. While you're losing fat, there's an exercise you can do to change how flat your stomach muscles sit. Google for the "vacuum exercise". Also, stop doing sit-ups and leg raises if you are already; they will make your stomach stick out.
Replyooh i should stop doing them then lol how do they make your stomach stick out?
ReplyHi. I'm a 17 year old girl, and I never used to exercise either. it's quite hard, i have a part time job, school, a lot of homework, competitions, a community choir, and a boyfriend to make some time for. In any case, I used to be quite overweight. So, I became a vegetarian, which helped immensely. I also got into yoga and pilates, which, in addition to making you a bit more flexible, helps shed a few pounds. Just give it 20-30 minutes a day.
ReplyBea: There are two opposing muscle: the rectus abdominus and the transversus abdominus. The rectus abdominus is your six-pack muscle, but the transversus abdominus is inside the body. When the rectus abdominus is relaxed, it rounds out the stomach. If you strengthen the transverus abdominus, it pulls it back in.
Replyi'm only 13 n i weigh 60 kg n 1.62 m. i really want to lose some weight. i used 2 be really overweight but then my dad made me go 2 gym. now i'm better and ppl tell me i really look got but still sum kids call me fat (even sum really small kids). i'd like 2 lose at least 6 kilos. can sum1 plz help me.
Replyi'm lisa and i'm 17 yearzs old . I 'm 5'1 and weight 160 and i got so much weight on my legs and thigh it so ugly my body is so ugly when i take off my cloth i really wasnt to loose weight because i want to feel comfortable with my body. what should i do?
ReplyLisa Cabral: The short answer I can give you is to buy the e-book "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" (www.burnthefat.com) and follow what it says. It's less than $40 and will tell you everything you need to know about fat loss. I can't describe an entire fat loss program on this board.
ReplyIm 14 and 5 ft 6 or 7. I weigh 8 and a half stone but im really tall and skinny..i want to add more weigh too my legs and thighs but i dont know how to it feels like all my weight and fat goes to my stomach as i am stratin to realise it getting bigger...someone help please
ReplyDappa: To add weight to your legs, try leg presses, hack squats, front and back barbell squats, leg extensions, and leg curls. To reduce your stomach, you're just going to have to lose weight. Clean up your diet and go exercise (cardio and weights).
ReplyI'm 5'8, 13 1/2 years old, and 144 pounds. I know I'm at a healthy weight, but the problem is is my weight control. Over the past 2 years [I got my period when I was 11 1/2] I've gained 23 pounds! [121 pounds - 144 pounds] I know about 15 of it was natural, but the rest just comes! I DONT eat junk food, I eat breakfast, exercise daily for atleast an hour, am never watching tv or on the computer for more than an hour a day, and I eat between 1600-1800 calories a day! How can I stop this weight gain? And, if possible, get down to 135 pounds again?
ReplyHi! I'm DaeDae, I'm 15.I'm 5'4" and I weigh 140 I know it isn't much compared to all these other girls but I'm tired of looking like this and looking for a way to loose atleast 10 pounds loose some weight. I wanna stop covering myself up. PLEASE HELP ME!!
ReplyDaeDae: No one can describe a full fat loss program on this board. The best advice I can give you is to buy a well-structured program and follow it. Like with Lisa Cabral, I recommend BFFM. It'll give you every natural advantage in losing fat.

Danielle: Ah, sounds like you're a total ectomorph. First of all, you're going to have to eat for growth. You should pick calorie-dense foods with a low thermic effect. A food's thermic effect is the amount of energy it takes to digest the food. If you eat 100 calories from protein, it takes 30 calories just to digest it. This means it has a thermic effect of 30%.
Fats, however, have a thermic effect of 2-3%. Try to eat more fats, but try to pick healthy fats. After reaching very low body fat percentages for different sports, I had to put back on a lot of weight. I used whole milk, whole eggs, weight gain shakes, natural peanut butter, fatty cuts of meat, and a few other things high in fat.
Next, if you're currently exercising, cut back on it as much as you feel comfortable with. This will help you eat enough to gain weight.
Finally, ectomorphs can be very jittery/nervous. If this is true about you, take some time everyday to just relax and slow yourself down.
ReplyHello.... i am 14 years old, about 5'2 and i weigh 127 pounds!! im not fat, but i know my body could be better and i would have so much more confidence that i have never had! i right in the middle when it comes to girls in my school... but i would like to have a toned body but not really manly musculear eihter! my thighs touch and my stomach has a little bit of cellulite.... i am a cheerleader, but that doesnt seem to keep me in shape or give me a better figure! i want to have curves and a hott body, but i need to get rid of the lovehandles and mini spare-tire! i have tried so many things but im really impatient so when it comes to things changing, i have a hard time waiting so i always blow it! please help! i have tried for the past year and nothing is working so im like starting to become obsessive! i want to lose like 7 to 10 pounds... or at least look like i have but gain muscle instead! either one cuz everytime me and my friends are joking around they will lift me up and i feel way to heavy and i get mad and make them let me go! PLEASE HELP!!!
ReplyCammi: I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle might be a good answer for you. The first chapter of the book deals with motivation and will show you how to stay on the program. It also has nutrition, cardio, and weight lifting for fat loss and muscle gain.
As far as developing manly musculature, I'm going to educate you. There are two things that can make your muscles look manly, size and definition.
As a woman, you're not going to gain much muscle at all unless you start taking steroids. This doesn't mean you won't get toned, but you won't get huge.
As far as definition, you know that disgusting amount of definition bodybuilders have on stage, with all the veins and lines between the muscles? You have that right now; it's just covered up by a layer of fat. If you don't get so skinny that you lose the entire layer of fat, you won't get that weird-looking definition.
The take-home message: try Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle and don't fear weight lifting.
