Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Okay, I have never told anyone my weight but here it goes. I am 13 and I'm 5'2 and I weigh 165 pounds. I know I'm fat and I have been told I'm fat, and I'm so paranoid that other people with think I'm fat. I now have thirty days before I have to go to school. My plan for this summer was to try to loose as much weight as possible so I could look better for my first year at high school, but my plan failed. Early in the summer I broke my leg and I'm still in a cast. The cast won't come off for another 2 weeks, leaving almost no time to excersize. I need help. How can I get a really good workout without using my leg?

iyyaaa x... im looking for a diet which will sort out my Thighs which will take the flab away ! ... buh none of them will work for me... i just want to be 5 and a half stone again. i am 7 stone right now but that is not a healthy wait for who i am can you help me please !

I'm a freshman in highschool, i weigh 114 lbs. and i'm 5'6'' i know i seem fairly skinny, but my butt is huge! it looks so out of proportion because i'm a 34A. i run about three miles a day, because i'm in cross country, but my butt just won't shrink! other girls tell me that guys like it, but i'd rather have a fashion model's figure, which in my opinion is the most attractive. I don't eat particularly healthy because i burn so many calories running, but i was wondering if anybody knew some tips for making it look smaller. ex. belts, jeans, skirts. thanks!

Hey Taylor--news flash: running makes your legs/butt/glutes developed and kinda large in comparison to the rest of your body. I'm 5'3" and 103 lbs and I have a nice big booty too because I run 6-7 miles a day. It happens when you run :) If you want a fashion model figure, stop running, start smoking and stop eating. Then you'll look like a skinny little waif and guys won't think you're as attractive anymore. If I were you, I'd just stick to running and accept your body for what it is.

Hi everyone :) My name is Amber, and ive mostly been considered " average". I will be 17 this september (in a month and 1/2? Something like that) , Im 5'7 and 141 lbs. I know Im unhealthy. Ya Ya, Im "normal for my age/height" but I dont FEEL healthy- i have some serious belly jelly and a huge butt. And Im a 36B. Anyways. I feel out of proportion when i walk. Ive gained alot of weight in the past 4 motnhs or so...i used to be 125 then. Its quite a difference. Anyways, I always think ok, I don need those cookies! Just ONE, Amber! then il get out the milk and have 7. Im not sure how to stop this binging?? Im having jaw surgery on the 25th of aug, and im supposed to lose about 10-20 lbs then because i wont be able to eat....but I dont want to wait. besides, shouldnt i exercise now so Im in the best shape possible going into the surgery??

I also hate my body... When I got pregnant with my son in July of 2005, my weight gained on and on. I gained a woopinng 70 pounds, which is very unhealthy for my age and baby type. After having my little boy, the weight has gone away but i have this nasty belly flab from all the stretching. I am back to 125 lbs but my flab is getting on my nerves. I don't know which diet to choose or which exercises to do. I want help losing my flab and just alittle bit of weight but everyone says i am fine. But, to me, I feel so ugly with my flab, it is ugly. It has taken a toll on my Self-esteem and i want to feel beautiful...i want to feel pretty. please help me!!!!!!!

you are all lucky im 12 5"5 and i weigh 190 or at least the last time i checked that's how much i weighed. in the beginning of school i weighed 180 in 4 months i gained 10 lbs. and now its been 7 months and i dont know how much i weigh. all of you are complaing for nothin. all of you are all skinny. so stop complaining!!!!!!!! i hope i lose this weight as i get older if i dont i dont know what i will do.

hi, i am 5'3 and 153lbs. i hate being fat but i dnt know what to do..i am 13 yrs. old... i try not to eat alot but then i end up eating... the only time i get exersize is when i walk to and from school and when i feel like walking.. i dnt know what to do.... i dnt know what i should and shouldnt eat or drink....and this year i am doing dance so i may get more exersize from that to.....

hi i am 13, i am 180 pounds i diet excercies i do so much the more i excersice the fatter i get the doctor told me i need to lose some weight but it is very hard i used to get teased but now i dont,i have strecth marks to on all the top of my body its so hard to find clothes because i wear a 15 in clothes im so tired of being fat, but the doctor said the i dont take in enough calories a day he said i only take in a 1000 a day but why am i getting fatter

I really hate my body. i have a really big bum and thighs the size of an elephants. i used to be average for my height, but i don't know any more. (i don't know the pound/kilogram conversion) i now weigh 55kg and am 172 cm tall, and that is average, but i hate my bum. i'm flat chested (basically)and ugly as all hell. i'm just so scared that i'm going to end up alone when i'm older, because i'm hideous. i used to do Rhee Tae Kwondo (black belt), but my instructor had his knee smashed up by a ram. that was about 6 months ago. in a year i've gained 13 kilos. HELP!

ok, hi im angela, i am 14 5'8", i have been called so many names in my school life, i have always been hevy, im now 265 pounds and im a freshman in highscholl, ive been called everything u can imagine, i really need help, i have tried almost evrything but pills, i would like to be down to 160, ive lost this summer a total of 20 pounds but i always gain it back. i only have three pairs of pants that actually fit me and i only wear band shirts size 2x cause thats the only thing that i can actualy wear, m in so much pain and im deppresed because im so big, im and 18, im sort of gothic and u cant find any clothes in my size, whut also doesnt help is im in one of the richest towns in CT and all of the kids in my skool r mean and rich, im the most unpopular person in my skool because of my weight, im the biggest in my skoo. in the hall all it is r looks in the hall and name calling, please i need help. i would luv to be down to 160 POUNDS AND SIZE LIKE 14-8, help me, i need some tips, thanx soooooo much

k, i'm jen. i'm turning fourteen in just a few months and i'm 5'4". i weigh 110. that's average, right? all i want is a flat tummy. i just started loosing my flat tummy when i started seventh grade. i excercise and everything. do crutches and all, but it never seems to work. i'm not fat, i just have unwanted flab. rrr, i just want a flat tummy before started eighth grade in just a few weeks. what should i do? =/

Hi my name is Mandy. I am almost 18 years old, i am 5'6 and i weigh about 128 pounds. This may not seem like much, but i recently gained 6 pounds during the last few weeks while at summer college. (i only weighed about 122 before). What is the easiest way to shed the excess 6 pounds that are glued to my tummy and thighs? I have tried doing situps but they only seem to target my upper abdomen, not my lower one-which is the fattest part. Does running help you lose weight? Any advice will help! Thank you!

Hi everyone,
My name is LJ and I am a 14 year old girl who weighs 132 pounds. I am 5'4 and I feel a bit on the chubby side. My brother teases me alot, but then apologizes, but I have quite a few friends who have tiny stomachs. I feel iscolated around them, like I am so different that I don't fit in. I avoid eating around them, and I don't even eat that much. I sleep late, so I usually don't eat breakfast or lunch. Then I have a granola bar and dinner. Thats about all I eat. I know i should be eating more to lose weight because I am an athetic girl. I do volleyball, basketball, soccer, football, and streethockey. I also go for walks alot on the beach at my cottage, I run on the tredmel almost everyday for 20 minutes, and I swim ALOT! I don't drink alot, because im not usually thirsty, but what bothers me the most is that all my friends eat soo much! They eat alot of junk food, and they dont seem to gain anything! I am very self-conscious and i just feel like i need a group of people who i relate to, to get some advice from. For some reason lately, I feel really bloated. For example, although I am hungry, I still feel like there is food still left in the back of my stomach making me feel sort of hungry. It's really wierd. I've been eating alot of junkfood everyday and I rarely exercise like I used to. For some reason, I weigh about the same over the years, but my face has really spreaded (gained weight in my face.) I really hate it! What can I do? Do you think that I really didn't gain weight in my body, but it went to my face from all the junkfood, overeating and lack of exercise? It's really weird! Please someone help me!

Hey my name is Carla. I'm 13 yrs old, about 4' 11" and I weigh 100 lbs. I'm a "full-figured" girl with hips, a butt, thighs and breasts. All of my friends are super skinny and tall, like models. I don't think that I'm really fat....but would you say that I'm over-weight? I have a lot of "flab" around my stomach and hips, and my thighs are huge!!! Last year while I was doing a pretty tough excercise regime for soccer, most of it became muscle...but now it seems to all be fat. What should I do???

kelsey- If you want to tighten up your thighs and butt, you should do lunges. Those are where you start by standing up with your feet together, and then take a really big step with one leg, and let the other leg bend until your knee is almost touching the ground. Then you bring both legs back up to a standing position and reverse which leg you step with first. Do about six of these on each leg every day, and you should start to see results in a couple of weeks!! Good Luck!

I'm a thirteen year old boy. I'm 5' 3''. I put on 24 pounds (almost two stone) in eight months. At the end of the school year my trousers didn't fit me. My bottonm fell off and the metal bit burst off too. My zipper couldn't go up either. When I put my track suit trousers on my stomach gets sore because they're too tight. Eight months ago I was six stone and six pounds (ninety pounds), now I'm eight stone and two pounds (one-hundred and fourteen pounds). I did grow about an inch since then though. At the end of this year I probably won't have grown in height but I'll probably be about nine stone.

christ this must be some UK BS...who the hell came up with a stone as a measurement of weight....anyways...i'm 6'3 and 155....i'm 26 and you know how i stayed that way? i got off my ass every now and then and i dont watch tv. does anyone even know how fast they can run 100 meters??? And back in high school if a girl was over 110 pounds i looked the other way. clothes dont make you look fat, your fat makes you look fat. girls try a finger down the throat. its not too late to have a social life

i am 16 and all i want is advice what to eat and not eat for example a planning sheets that sya bad food and health food and that it has like 9 o clock u should eat this then snack is an apple and luch is at 12 and snack is at 3 then dinner is at 6 and no more snack like that but don't seems to find it anywhere

To give you a specific advice, I would need to have at least some basic information about your eating habits. Since I don’t have that, you cannot go wrong if you start with the following:

Eat lean protein (chicken, turkey, any seafood, eggs, lean cuts of red meat). Eat vegetables. Eat fruits. Get your carbs from fruits and vegetables. Try to eliminate simple carbs found in soda, white bread, cakes, donuts, sugary cereals (most of them are), candies, French fries, etc. Take some Omega-3 (fish oil) supplements.

Try to eat around 1 gram of protein for your body weight (if you are 180 pounds, eat about 180 grams of protein each day). Carbs are tricky, so experiment with them a little, and see what works for you. Assuming you get ALL your crabs from fruits and vegetables, you can try to start with 250 grams a day. Usually you can safely go as low as 120 grams a day without any adverse affects, but be careful.

Exercise, you don’t have to start with weight lifting, start with something. Walk a little faster than you usually do, for at least 30 minutes a day. Again, this is very basic information, but something you can start with.

Hey..my name is JESS and yeah i'm 18!! I'M VERY FIT AND...i just wanna say...........THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT.....is EAT JUST SALAD WITH WHITE CHIKEN OR FISH andd.......instead of eating AFTERR 5:30pm....JUST GO JOGGING for like 15 min a day!!! in a month u can lose like 25lb!!!

well i'm 5'5 and 110 pounds but used to be around 125 in high school. i found that most people my age gained weight in the last 10 years while i slimmed down. here's some advice for what worked for me to lose and keep off those "few extra pounds" for people who are not over weight but would like to slim a little.

1. don't wait until you are starving to eat. i peck at stuff all through the day but i don't eat full meals at any time. i never feel hungry and i never feel full. i think having "planned" meal times growing up made my metabolism slower than just eating lightly here and there whenever i fancy.

2. don't drink sweeten beverages. no soda, no suger in coffee/tea no juices. drink a lot of water. sometimes you are more thirsty than hungry. listen to what your body really wants.

3. don't eat processed/fast foods/pre-prepared packaged. treat yourself to high quality foods, fresh and full of natural flavors. learn to cook using natural ingredients and not relying on pre-made sauces. when you have a craving, treat yourself to a little piece of something fancy. if i want chocolate, i'll have one piece of those ridiculously expensive chocolates rather than a whole candy bar ect..

4. work in a little time to stretch and exercise daily. its not hard to do a half an hour of stretches/cardio/weights while watching TV or whatever. work up a sweat and get your breathing/heartrate elevated. push yourself to do a little more than before. you don't need to be a fitness expert. even something as simple as at 5 minutes of jumping jacks and getting up to 15-20 minutes will make you feel stronger and more energetic.

5. don't think about losing weight or obsess with "rules". think about wanting to be healthy, stronger energetic and saving yourself money on future doctor bills. i don't have health insurance and i'm prone to depression so that's why i made these lifestyle changes.

Never, ever use the BMI scale. It's a travesty that people actually use that to assess how overweight they are. If you want to know if you're fat, buy a set of calipers and use it to approximate your body fat percentage.

Males should aim to be under 15% and females should aim for about 22%. Males can go as low as 6% safely, but I don't think females should push too much below 18%. Females should avoid becoming too skinny; this will cause halting of the menstrual cycle and osteoporosis, to name a few.

If you're unhappy about your weight, exercise and eat right. Eat a balanced diet of natural foods and start working out. Three weight training sessions and three cardiovascular sessions a week should be sufficient. Girls, get rid of those 3 or 5 pound weights and start lifting heavy. My fiancee could do bicep curls with 20 pounds per arm within a few weeks of starting lifting. It's nearly impossible you'll get bulky; you probably don't understand how hard it is to gain muscle without steroids, especially as a woman.

Constructing your actual program can be confusing. I can't tell you everything here, so I'll recommend www.burnthefat.com. It'll give you the real story on fat loss. The author has done a spectacular job with this book.

I just turned 14 about a month ago and I just dont feel skinny like I used to. I weigh about 150 which I guess isnt bad but every time I look in the mirror I see my stomach skicking out and my thighs poping out. Alice, if you want a weight loss plan, then go to www.burnthefat.com. The e-book there is just $40, and it's probably the last weight loss plan you'll ever buy once you see how well it works. There are no gimmicks, but it's not the easiest plan to follow. It involves a balanced, healthy diet of natural foods and a lot of exercise, but it will help you lose fat and not muscle. Don't trust fad diets, they look easy and therefore attractive, but they'll just end up making you fatter. The only way to keep the weight off is the honest way.

Don't go for losing the weight fast. If you do so, then you'll lose muscle. Any muscle you lose will make it much harder to stay lean or lose weight in the future.
