Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

I'm about 5'2 and I weigh 150. Is this really bad? I'm still losing weight, and I've forced myself to drink water, and excersize for about two hours everyday, sometimes more. I've also changed my diet in the last few months, I mainly just eat salad, chicken and some carbs. But I haven't really lost anymore, and I'm doing everything right. It's frustrating, my family tells me that I don't need to lose anyweight, but I don't think that's true, they're just being family after all.

Hi Melanie-

You should be asking this question of your doctor. Your doctor is the only person that knows whether your weight is something you will grow out of, whether you need to take radical steps, or if there is a medical reason that your weight is the way it is.

If you're eating a healthy diet and getting exercise, as a teenager, I don't think you should do anything differently. Your body is still growing, hormones are settling out, a radical diet isn't really a good idea. But, like I said, your doctor would know better - they'd know your medical history, your family's history, and what you should or shouldn't be doing.

Good luck, it sounds to me that you're doing everything right, so enjoy being a teenager and see what your doctor says.

I am 17 years old at 5'3. I am 189pnds and with a 2yr old son. I have little time to exercize and my eating habits are fairly healthy. I have been tormented about my weight in many ways and have lowered my self-esteem to the point that i dont feel comfortable taking my son anywhere because its embarressing to have people think i am pregnant again. i need help to loose weight so my son and i can go out this summer and be ok with the way i look and feel about my self. PLEASE HELP ME AND MY SON!!!

Ok I'm a 13year old girl.I dont look as much as i weigh,my friends think i weigh 120.That is way off.I really way about 170 poungs.I used to weigh 108,then i moved to new york.I need help.I really wana lose weight.On both sids of my family they have diabetes because they are over weight.I need tips.I now i need to eat better(i eat to much chinese food)and i walk a lot.But i just dont lose weight.HELP BEFOR IT'S TO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!

I am 15 years old and way 50kg and am 154cm I don't do much exercise except walking to and from the bus stop which takes 10 minutes. I feel that I eat healthy sometimes but usually just but junk food at school.
I think I am unfit and need to exercise but dont really have time with homework and my job getting in the way.
Do you have any suggestions???

I hate the way I look.

I am 14 years old, I weight 128lb and I'm 5"8.

I know I'm fat, and girls at my school pick on me about it, and they tell me to lose weight.

I eat lunch with my friends on the sports fields now because I hate eating in the canteen, people will come up to me and say "are you sure you shouldn't be on a diet?"

I try and eat as healthily as possible, I never go to McDonalds or fast food restaurants, and when I make my packed lunches I eat crackers and cheese, matzoh bread, an apple and some fruit juice. At home I eat only wholemeal bread and pasta, and if i have chicken I always grill it very lightly.

I go kickboxing once a week for an hour and a half and this is an intense workout that I enjoy.

I have Phys Ed lessons twice a week at school. I find them a joke, they aren't really any use if you want to excercise, although i try and use them as an excuse to run around.

I walk home from school as often as is possible, and i try and go out for jogs at the weekend with my friend.

despite all this i still cannot get down to my target weight of 110 pounds.

Please help me! I know I will look a lot better when I've lost the 18lbs and I don't know whats wrong with me!

i am 14 years old, 5'6 and i am 188 pound. the thing is that i dont look 190, everyone i ask says i look about 160 tops. i also exercise and train Judo 3-4 times a week. so why do i weigh so much when i dont look that heavy?

It is really sad that just about half the population is over weight and don't really care. I have lost a total of 355 lbs in the past year and a half. Weight loss is possible just don't give up!

if you are 1.70cm or above ,you are not fat.If you are under that height,you can lose 2 to 5 kg,this means don't lose more than 5 kg.You don't have to run.Walking is better than running.If you walk at least 40-45 minutes everyday,you will lose weight.Don't eat after 7-7.3o in the evening.Don't drink much cola because it is unhealthy for bones.Be patient,you should lose the weight slowly.

I am 14, 5'4, and weight 120lbs . I think I look normal for my age, but my thighs and stomach usually bother me. After I eat, I get a bloated belly. And whats really bothering me, is that I feel like I have a double chin coming on. When I stare down, I have that feeling. Eew. Its just there. And the weirdest part is, is that I used to be 113lbs a month ago, and my mom was at 110 (shes 36 and 5'3) and then this month, after I become 120, she is still 110. She doesnt exercise. Neither do I. I always walk to school and back though (20 min walk) , but I have to admit I am on the computer everyday and I do eat a lot of junk food. May be thats the problem, but I want to do something about that.

Something I forgot to mention, I do a lot of walking in school. Haha. From 1st to 4th to 1st to 4th floor, and well, I run up and down. Almost everyday.

I've almost 18 years old and I'm 5'1.5". I got my period when I was 13 years old and in the passed 3 years I've gained almost 30 pounds to a steady 138. The strange thing is that all the weight has gone to my belly area, making me look a little pregnant if I relax my stomach. I do have hips but the thing that is truly bothering me is the fact that I have a flat chest. I can hardly fit into a 34A and both my sisters and mother are all 36D's and DD's. why do i look like this?

so im "ME" and i need some major help.

im 5'3.
and my weight CONSTANTLY changes.
from 115-119 . and i woould like to weigh about 105 or so. t hat would be spectacular :D.

i pretty much starve myself when i really want to lose some weight, buttt it never works. i fall trhough it.

i just want to feel thin. everyone is like ohh ur so skinny. oh please. they have no idea. i have a big buttox, and have freaking cellulite. (which i hear is by heredity. and is very hard to get rid of. )

what is the best way to lose 15 or so lbs. witout taking YEARS. i need to lose it fast. i kno i kno, thats like impossible. but i dnt care. i play tennis. and im in pretty good shape i would, say , i have strong legs, and really strong arms. ijust need help. or some SUCCESS stories from teens. that would benice.

Some things to remember: Your body weight fluctuates by approx. 5lbs day to day. So don't freak over a few .lbs fluctuation.

I am female, 5' 7.5", and currently weigh 288lbs. I'm just turned 18. By the time I was 17 I weighed 315 lbs. I struggled with weight my entire life, plus severe asthma when I was young [its under control now.] My weight was due to a massively low metabolism becausae of medication I was on when I was young.

When I turned eighteen, I decided it was time to change. I had gone my entire life obese and unheathly. I had tried a million things, diets, exercising, weightloss pills... :(

Nothing worked. Thats when I discovered TaeBo. No I'm not an informercial for them. I didn't think it was going to work, jsut like the other things I had tried, yet I did it anyway because I was desparate.

TaeBo has changed so much for me. It was fun so I kept doing it, but it seriously jump started my weightloss. Because of the intensity, you can burn a ton of calories in just half an hour. I discoverd as I lost weight my skin was starting to hang. TaeBo shaped and defined muscles and helped pull this skin it.

Here's what I've done to start losing weight [and I'm lookin' good :)]

TaeBo 4 days a week, M-F. 30 min Basic. I do it at dinner time. This way I haven't eaten for awhile and my stomachs empty; when I exercise, it will burn fat calories, not the ones I'm digesting. Plus it completely gets rid of all cravings for food, and I don't end up eating until its because my stomach is roaring. Because my appetites low from the level of exercis, I don't feel like eating and only consume what is necessary.

I bought a big exercise ball [$5] And a couple of resistance bands [$7] I use the exercise ball to sit on whenever I watch TV or use the computer. Because your body is constantly having to move a little to stay balanced you work hard to work muscles.

I run for ten minutes before doing the TaeBo to make sure my muscles are adequately warmed up. A light perspiration means you're ready.

I do fifty stomach crunches [shoulder-ups] after the work out, though lately I've been doing fifty before and fifty afterwards.]

I've gotten a few hand weights. [$5 ea.] their five pounds weights. I use these on fri-sun to do various lean muscle buidling exercises.

1 Thursday every month I do 60 squats, 60 right and left lunges. No these don't bulk muscle or make you huge like people think. THey are very beneficial and burn extra calories for about three days after doing them. They burn a ton of calories while doing them. WARNING: These will cause your muscles to fill with blood. After exercising, about twenty hours later the blood will be forced back out of the muscles and leave behind a lot of lactic acid. YOUR MUSCLES WILL HURT!!! They will be sore, and you will literally cry when you sit on the crapper because your butt feels so bruised [okay, so I'm exagerattting a little....] Squats are awesome. You will see results after each and every time. They make your muscles firm, pull your thighs [including innner thighs] in, and make your butt tighter. I once did 180 squats in forty minutes and lost two inches off my rear. NO JOKING.

OKay, so remember, if you're big like me you have to find awesome calorie burning exercises and you have to do them. I highly recommend TAEBO, its done wonders for me. If there happens to be a gym that offers classes in your area [there is in mine] I highly suggest you take them. The instructor will make sure you're doing the moves right, and will always push you harder than you push yourself.

If you are normal weight, but you are flabby, then I still suggest TaeBo. It will even out your muscle proportions and will tone your muscles like you've never seen before. It will also pull all your muscles in, getting rid of flab.

Just have fun and find something that makes you "have fun, be strong, get fit, and lost weight!" [The TaeBo model.]

I am 17 years old and I have horrible cellulite. But here is the deal.... I am not overweight!! I went to the doctor and he told me this is my average weight. i have gained one pound since I was 13. i am 5'5 and 124 lbs. Does anyone know why i would have cellulite? not to mention the stretch marks. I feel so embarrassed to go swimming because of these things. I feel way more flabby than I used to too. i don't excersise a whole lot.. but I do walk a lot and stand up all day at my job.

Hey, I'm 14, and I am a sports fanatic! I'm into soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, skating, swimming, running...I'm always on the go! I am not on any diets..cmon! i'm still a kid! I do have a bit of a sweet tooth, but I eat healthy and pretty much I'm really fit! But even with all of this, I still notice how large my butt, and thighs are..and I can't get rid of those darn 'love handles'! It's really annoying, and I'd like to get help on losing a few extra pounds..I am 5'7 and weigh about 150 give or take..Please help!

OK... i am way younger than you guys.... im 12...but i seriously need some advice. I am 73 pounds.... the second to skinniest girl in my class.. and im not all that bummed about it. I do not want to gain weight... but I have a REALLY flat chest! ive learned about the stages of breasts and stuff... and at 11 years old your suposed to have really small buds... and i don't even have those! are there any boob excersises or anything i can do to grow them? i feel seriously left out because all the girls in my school have boobs. Except for... of course... me.

im 13 years old, and i am 130 pounds/5'2, i am soo close to being overweight, and everytime i exercise or go running outside, and ONLY eat fruits and vegetables and very occasionally a little piece of low fat chocolate. But i seem to be gaining weight, and i am not growing taller, its been 2 weeks, and i exercised and kept a strict diet, and i gained 2 pounds!!!!!
i am VERRY upset.

IM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATED i cant take it, my weight keeps going down, and then after i exercise it goes back to the same. CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENS PLEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!

you girls might be gaining weight just b/c of puberty or something, even if you aren't getting taller... i heard that sometimes your body will pack on a few pounds especially during this time just incase you get pregnant and there is no food around to nourish the baby (think caveman times....) hope this helps! and P.S. your beautiful no matter what you look like, you just have to believe that....and at least you are trying to SOMETHING about ur weight, unlike most ppl ;)

Hi, I am an 18 year old female about 5'4 and 120 lbs. I was beginning to get in shape this spring until I got sent to the hospital for a medicine reaction. I was in a bed for almost two weeks, and now I am trying to get back into shape. I try to run about 3 miles every morning, and do 50 crunches, 25 side crunches (where you lay on your side and bring your elbow to your upright knee) and a few leg exercises like fire hydrants and from the push up position bring your leg out and in. The medicine I am on makes me kind of weak and shaky, so I would like to gain more muscle to stabilize myself and make me feel good. I lifeguard at a pool and waitress in a cafe, so I need to stay in shape. What other exercises should I be doing? Should I be running more? Walking more? How about some ways to shape my thighs and butt? Anything will help, thank you!

I'm 13,5'4 and 79 pds i have an overworking matabilism i've tryed everything to gain wait and i'm commpletly flat chested and i have no butt i don't even fit in any jeans at the thighs everyone calls me anerexic and bulimic!:-( i'm sick of looking so thin and i look at eveeryone and they all have a chest and an ass but i have none of it! is there a way i can gain weight but fat weight not muscle weight the only good thing i have are abbs!:-(

Im 14(5'5 or 5'6) and i weigh about 140 lbs. I ve always been kind of fat and I ve always hated the way my body looks. I just finished my 8th grade year. When I started I weighed close to 180,but by the end of the year I ended with 141. I exercise about two and a half hours everyday(sometimes more),but I can't seem to get past 140! Its really starting to bug me! I eat the right foods, and exercise all the time,but I cant seem to get to the weight i want to be at! Please help me!!!

I've been reading all these posts from everyone and I have a few comments. When I was 13 I was 5'6" and weighed 115 pounds. At the time I thought I was HUGE! Now I weigh 180...Try that one on for size! Anyway, I just wanted to tell you guys that most of you don't sound fat to me. You guys are young still and have a skewed body image; you're in your body, so you can't look at it without being judgemental. Relax, okay? Today's generation of women are too harsh on themselves. Most of you sound like normal-looking teens to me. Trust me, if you believe you're fat, you'll live like you're fat, and then you WILL get fat. Then, you'll be that person who looks at old pictures of themselves and says, "Gosh, I was so skinny! I can't believe I thought I was fat. I wish I was that size now!"

Talk to your parents about these issues. You shouldn't be looking for advice online. (Your family knows you better than any of us on here do.) Tell them how you feel and see what they say. Friends don't always give the best advice either, especially if they're your age too! They probably feel the same way about their bodies.

just know one thing that all of us has different body types all of us don't have to be the size other people want you to be yeah i started gaining alot of pounds when i was 11 years old i, but at 12 years old i was 213 pounds but there a chances you can do all of us can learn the hard way but we know what's wrong. hey ya we don't have to be what people want's you to be keep up yeah head high because were strong different kinds of people.

and to stay skinny teenager sdon't eat

seriously i am going to cry. All of you girls are fretting too much. most of you do NOT sound like you are overweight. and if your doctor says "dont lose weight" than dont! you look best at an average weight. and you skinny girls, you will grow and you cant make your bust bigger eather. 12 is WAY too young to give up, you will probably be perfect when you are older and it matters more.

i sound like an adult huh? i am only 16 and am at an average weight. i love swimming and tennis and stuff although while working (farm) i dont have time as much, but i dont fret too much about it. i use to have a real issue about my weight. lost 10 lb, then gained 25 back, yet still at an average weight. (that took 1.5 years)

I HAVE THE SECRET!!! get busy. play sports, get a job, hang out with friends, try to keep your room clean (seriously, you will feel better), get enough sleep (7-8 hours average). Butt problems? walk a lot and run some. Stomach problems? try paliates, its a miracle worker. do all you can and then say "ive done my best to look good" and love your self for who you are. just forget yourself and serve others. this will help you have a happier, fuller life. i promise!

i am super short. 4'11 i come from a family of short people. i am 15 yrs old and i weigh about 120-125 lbs. i do so much exercise, i am a high school cheerleader and am in gymnastics. i sort of eat healthy i would like to eat healthier. i would like to weight at least 115lbs. if not 110. even though i am active i would like to learn some yoga or something and tone my thighs and stomach. i absolutely hate my thighs!!! i feel like they are so fat... even though it isnt, its pure muscle. please tell me ways to tone them. also is there any way i can grow some? i mean i have tried muliple multi vitamins, 1 glass of milk a day... anything else?

Ok well I seriously need some help. I am 5'2'' and I weigh close to 100 pounds. Well I am not like fat i just have lose fat on my thighs and my stomach ,and I really want it to go away!!! Is there anything i can do to get the fat away??????????? Also I barely have boobs and a butt and everyone else in my grade do, is there any excercizes to get booobs and a butt???? plz help me !!!!!!I would really appreciate it!!!!

I'm 5'8 and I weigh between 135-140 lbs. In the summer I ususally bike, but this summer my riding buddy is away and I just been sitting on my butt. My top half of my body is skinny but my lower half is kinda big. Anyone have any ideas on how to lose weight in the thighs?

Hey DENNIS, I know ddr is fun, but maybe you should invest your time somewhere else. For instance biking, jogging, or swimming. After you eat, don't sit around, go take a walk or play ddr. If you go do a little something, it burns calories. If you sit down instead, your calories build up and what your body doesn't use, it stores as fat. Which cases you to gain weight. So go play. Dear CHRISTI, there's hope!!! Even though everyone is special in there own way, doesn't mean you should fix your body to please anyone else. But, you can fix your stomach. For your stomach you can do crunches. There are many different forms of crunches that will help burn fat and give you a six pack in time. You have to be dedicated to your crunches, but they will work in time if you do them repeatedly. I don't know really about your thighs though, sorry. And depending on how old you are, developing comes on its own. Hoped I helped.
