Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Anne gave good advice.

Karla, whatever "fast" way is not healthy or permanent - you just gain all the weight back and then some. Also, do not weigh yourself more than once a week tops. Better yet, do not weigh yourself - you can tell if you are losing weight by how your clothes fit. That is what matters. I'm just about to give Em some tips on how to lose weight, so read those.

Em, you've already figured out what is the problem: you eat only junk food and hate fruit and vegetables. Keep in mind that eating junk food will damage your health, not only in those old people "heart disease" ways, but in more obvious ways right now, like you'll have no energy, so school work will be harder, having a social life will be harder, and so on. Get a different job in the summer and if you start eating fruit and vegetable, I guarantee you that in about a month you'll like it. It is a matter of sticking with it. When I started eating healthy, I really hated brown rice. Now, whenever I eat white rice, I hate it, the brown just tastes good and familiar to me. The same thing will happen to you.

So in short: do not eat junk food, fried stuff, stuff with sugar, or fast food. Do eat fruit, vegetables, chicken, fish, lean meat and pork (as in, don't eat the fat parts you can see, and not fried of course), grains that should be preferably whole grains (like whole wheat bread, brown rice, etc.), cottage cheese, eggs, skim or fat-free yogurt, nuts in moderation (all-natural peanut butter - a tablespoon a day, for exempla), and use small amounts of good oils like canola and olive (one teaspoon a meal will do), drink skim milk. So basically for breakfast, instead of Froot Loops, you wanna have some oatmeal with a piece of fruit, or a couple slices whole-wheat toast with all-natural peanut butter or cottage cheese, or some fruit and yogurt. For lunch and dinner, you want to have a portion of meat or another protein, a portion of a grain or starchy vegetable (brown rice, potato) and vegetables. For snacks, it is pretty much the same as breakfast.

Stay active and do some exercise - an activity you like. It could be a sport, it could be DDR or even dancing in your room. But do it for at least 40m, 3x a week.

Like a few above, I'm a little older (eighteen) and I weight 220 pounds; however I stand 6'7". My basketball coach tells me to get "faster" in running up and down the court, and the only time we are scored on is when me and our power forward (6'3") are getting back to defense. I have been working out more ofen and running distance but I actually feel more sluggish; the extra exercise (and probably more food) made me heavier, and slower(not to mention less explosive on the drive/dunk). I then tried sprinting and this seemed to be my best strategy to getting faster, unlike what my coach suggested. For some people, if your exercise routine fails to yield results, try doing the direct opposite, maybe your body will respond.

I am about a 5'2ish frame and started going to the gym 6 days a week and even excersise Sundays!!! Yet my thighs look like bombshells as does my butt. I'm even getting lovehandles on my sides. It really doesn't make sense because of all the excersise I'm doing, the fat loss should go down I would think. I do 40 min of cardio, and then the next day weights on a weekly basis. I know I haven't hit that pleateu yet, because I have just started this regimen. Lately though, my weight has gone up to about 123-125lb and it really depresses me. I've heard that if you eat to much fiber and don't get enough water, that might be a trigger to the weight gain but I dont know. I really wish someone could help me and just tell what to do, because believe me I would take their advice and run with it!!

as you exersize you will not get hungry. I go without eating all day. At night I eat a healthy high carb pasta and chicken with two vitmin c. I can drink anywhere from one two gallons of skin milk a day. I always feel great. I have lost atleast thirty pounds in a month. My bodybuilding freinds say eat to live not live to eat. My fat 300 pound freinds who I try to train says eat six meals a day. She has not lost a pound and connot stop eating. I get so frustrated with fat people who have to eat all the time. Once you start eating after trainig your body will get very hungry. Try to let your body go without to burn your fat. You dont swim after eating and you dont train after eating your body slows down to digest food I eat at night and fall a sleep even better. My body has all night to digest food. All it takes is common sense and not listening to what these idots who are wrighting these books are marketing. Most of them are authors and dont train at all and stick a picture of someone who they paid on the cover. And dont forget the best exersize is fun sports. I play rugby and jog 3.0 miles day. And rest is my best freind. Remeber sleep is the most important part to training. When you get a good night sleep your body will recover. Take it easy on soar muscle but still try to train it will losen the muscle and not let it tighten up even more.

Any time I have ever lost weight I didn't HAFT to work out in order to lose weight. But I agree that is important. It is a good habit to start when you don't want to end up gaining your weight back. It helps you KEEP IT OFF!

well nobodys perfect. I did talk to another girlfriend and she lost alot of weight and she did the liquid diet. Drinking alot of healthy liquids instead of eating all the time. I also have alot of problems with tigtening my love handles and my man boobes. The inside of my chest get tight but the outside is always hard to tighten. I heard if you do side bends with wieghts your love handles get bigger. So maybe this time I will try a twisting situp to tighten the love handles. But I still do three different chest work outs and still have not found anything for the outside of my chest So any suggestions would be great.

One more thing. My girlfriend love social eating all the time. Im training now so bad habits have to come to end so I had to make good choices. One of them are not eating out all the time. So I broke up with her becuase she wants to keep eating out and she still want to complain about her weight all the time. Social eaters tend to want to eat all the time and connot find active things to do instead of eating. Its like an addiction. I know it can be hard to find things to do active in some areas because I just move frm houston to boring little lake placid ny home of the winter olympics. In houston I go dance at night or roller blading . Here I have to do things during the day because social eating and the movies are the only things at night to do. And they have a skating areana instead of a roller rink to go rollerbalding all night. And they dont get enough people to ice skate so the arena is closed most of the time. If I could change onething in the area it would be that crappy ice skating areana to rollerblading and rollerskating. Any suggestions on how to do that pls let me know. Im mean the ice skating areana is not very profitable. And I have been to alot of roller rinks and they pack them in all night long some time they have all nighters with laser tag. I love roller blading

I am 20 years old and weigh 9 stone 12 pounds. I no i am overweight but keep going through a cycle of gaining an loosing 14 pounds. Once i get to my target i tend to binge and eat as much as possible because i feel i deserve to eat as i have worked so hard. I weigh myself every week then if i loose weight eat lots for one day. I can not stop thinking about dieting and will not eat anything if i do not no the callorie content unless it is my day off. is this ok. I no i am overweight but friends make comments about my unusuall eating habits. I just want to be thin.

"Payback" from the disney movie
You help two people and then they pay it back by helping to people. and on and on it goes and it suppost to get bigger and bigger. making society into a better place. Is a good movie. So how I started pay it back. I find two people who want to get inshape and better their lives. Who normally make bad choices with their life and money. And I get them to go to the gym with me. Then I pay for a month membership for two people and explain to them if I pay for it they have to stick with it or else I wont help them no more. Now I have two people to train and it helps me because Im working out twice a day with two different work out partners. Most people think I kind of crazy to pay their way but I think of it as a good ivestment. And I am helping people. I still am trying to get them inshape and sometimes it takes more then a month but its going good. I do have to chase them around like the kid did with the people he help in the movie. But they always seem to come back just about the time Im ready to give up on them. They always want to pay me back, like in the movie but I don't let them. They are still not ready to help them selfs when they say things like that. I think its just a habit to say that to someone. Beacuse I know they still wont pay for their own membership yet they rather give me money for junk food or they will spend their money to buy them selves drugs or alcohol instead. When all I want them to do is make good choices and pay their own gym membership. Soon I will explain to them the "Pay it back" when they are ready and they will have too help two people get inshape. still trying.. I have faith in society..

hi im 13 i weigh like 110 pounds and im like 5"2-5"3
last year in 6th grade i was almost 70 pounds. i have no clue as wat had happened to me. i dont have my period yet, i dont do any sports except for walking home sometimes, and i eat ALOT of junk food. i have pretty big thies and i barely can do anything outside cause i live in michigan. I'm 14 years old, and I am very fat. I weigh 160 pounds. I play soccer, and I ran track, and I don't eat breakfast or lunch. That's my problem. When I come home, I just snack. Chips, pizza, all that good stuff. I know i'm in shape though because I can run the normal speed of the other girls on my soccer team, if not faster. I can also run a long time. So it's not the working out thing. It's my eating habits. Any advice on how to cut down and lose weight before school starts in september? I don't gain any weight, but I just don't lose any.

I don't really have a problem with the way I look, I'm 17, 5'9'' and weigh 150... if anything I'm trying to put some mass on.

I just wanted to point out that scales are terrible. They don't know the difference between muscle and fat, not to metion water weight, when you last went to the bathroom, your body type, etc. Stop weighing yourself, take a picture of yourself every 2 weeks instead and see what changes happen. Then, just tweak your diet and workout.

Ok im almost 15 years old... im round 5"4 .. and weigh 50 kg (round 110lbs) i eat mcdonalds and kfc like all the time! I have coke everyday! I eat so much junk food n never hav vegies...) I'm not fat becoz every1 is always commenting how can i eat that much food n still not put on weight! i do a lot of excercise.. ... but the thing is.. i have a huge butt... i dont no y coz da rest of me is thin... WHY DO I HAV A BIG BUTT!! HOW CAN I GET RIDDA IT!! i carnt wear jeans or trackpants without a long top covering my butt coz its so friggin big!!!!! :(

I'm 14 years old and i'm 5'1 and i weight 132. I feel really fat. i gather most of my fat on my hips and thighs. and i'm NOT happy about swim suit season comming up. I don't know how to take off weight. I try to get exercise in. I normally run 1 lap on a track maybe 3 times a week. i walk home, and i TRY to avoid unhealty foods. When i started the tennis season i didn't lose or gain a pound. and now that it's over i've gained 2 pounds. How do i take it off? I don't have much time to commit to exercise. I hardly have enough time for homework. I can devote plenty of time on weekends, just not week days. Is there an exercise plan out there that is 2 a week? i need to lose some weight. it's embarassing to hang out with friends, and know i'm alot bigger than them. i need help.

Ok, well I am 20 years old. 5'7" and i have gained 30lbs. in the last 9 months! i mean i noticed that i had been gaining weight but i didnt think it was that much! i admit that i had a very poor diet and with waking up at 5am and working until almost 6pm I am usually exhausted after work! I saw my doctor yesterday and talkedto her about all of it! She said some of the medication i had been put on may have casued the change in my uhealthy appetite. so she changed my prescriptions! I am also on a pretty strict diet which consists of almost nothing i had eaten just 3 days ago!i admit even when i was thinner i was very self-conscious but now its horrible. I want to eat healthy and exercise and lose the weight i put on and more if possible! so if anyone has any suggestions for motivation or how i should go about all of this please let me know! Thanks a million!!!!!

i am 5ft7 and weigh 163lbs i am not overweight as i have quite a flat stomach but i have a big bust and i take a size british 14 in trousers and 14 on top i think being a bit curvier is nicer than those stick thin models i am proud of my figure

To all the girls on this thread who aren't fat but think they have a big bum, there are many guys out there (myself included) that like a big bum on a girl. So stop worrying! There's nothing wrong with being average weight with a big bum.

hi i really have a problem. I think my body instintivly sucks in my fat. When I breath out, my stomach expands about 2 inches and hangs over my pants alot!!! My thighs are huge an I feel like I am constantly gaining weight. I don't hate body, but now one seems to like me with this FAT!! Is there a way to loose this icky fat??

im 5'2 and really lazy im not fat im untoned and have cellulite. its gettin me down coz i have no motivation to change it. cant give up mayonaise i eat loads of it and drink no water! if there is away of loseing cellulite without effort i'd love to hear it!!!!

well Im down to 215 from 260.. in like 3 months.. I am finding out I dont have to watch what i eat as much but to eat small amount s now my stomach has contracted. It is alot easier now. I can eat chips which I love and I dont eat any big meals. I did eat alot last night because I had nt eaten in awhile. I only had like 2 cans of ravaolis and tuna sandwich and some chips. And that was to much I felt really sick and I got sick. Felt better after I wont eat that much again. I cant eat alot anymore I fill up alot faster now and sometime I dont realize it. That has never really happen before. But I have been really active lately. So I still excersize everday. But dont really have to worry to much about if I want to eat chips for lunch. Or have a few cookies. I dont go overboard on junk food. Thats about the only junk food I eat. I still drink only fat free milk. Eating small meal are important. But I dont have to have six small meals a day. Just one or two small snacks thru out the day. I will be at 200 in no time. That was my goal. So I have perrty much reached it. Then I got to start watching so I dont keep losing to much people start to thinking I loss to much weight. I know that pestimist say if you lose to fast you will gain it back. But I am a proven example thats not true. When you lose your weight your so happy that you would never think of gaining it back. And you feel so good it worth all the hard work you put into it. And the girls are sworming now again. its amazing what people think of you when your not fat but in geat shape. they start to look up too you and not down. So I say do what ever it takes because its worth everything. Your are born again. I have lost weight and gained weight in my life time. But I become wiser everytime I do it. The reason people gain weight back is because there are uasually things in there life they cant control. For instance a new job that works you to death. A divorce. GOing to college can be one because you have to study all the time. Death in the family. Kids is another one. They can take up all your time. Thats one of the hardest ones. your time can be as important as there's. if you dont feel good its hard to make them feel good. remeber they look up to you. you dont want them to think you are fat and unhealthy. Highschool girlfreind or boyfeind can slow you down. Thats another big one. Thats why I tend not to want to get attached to anyone. remember once you get thru the first month it becomes alot easier. My other two freinds did give up. So what can I say. they talk still about getting inshape to me and I kind dont like to hear about it. I stil try to support them. Just not as much. I guess they choose hanging out with there other freinds.
They have nt learned that when I hang out with my freinds we do something beside couch patato stuff like wacth tv play video games and sit around think what we can make to eat next. People love to cook that is another down fall. They love to cook and then they eat.. Work in a restruant if you want to cook for everyone. Or be a waiter. You will soon hate seeing food all together. I guess what I am saying is that I go to the gym to hang out with my freinds. Or I go to rugby practice to see them. when do I spend time with my girlfreind. right.. Well I dicede if she is going to be my girlfreind she is going to be active in rugby, running or dancing. and when you do get older there is other active things to do with them at night that can be as much fun and a great work out. I like to think it could be a olympic sport. The better you are in shape the more fun that will be. You dont want to be to fat and tryed to not be able to perform when you get that chance. They probably wont stick around or come back. And I say why have one girlfreind when you can have as many as you want. If they want to get serious and make you there steady boyfreind then I say no. I hear alot of parents wont even let there kids date because there grades are to important. I would not say you should go that far but I would say if you want to stay healthy that should be as important as grades. And you dont want anyone to screw them up for you no matter what they tell you or how much you feel for them. I find that people like to change once there in a steady relationship. I find once they had the cake they do get bored of eating it after awhile. so that my words of wisdom do with it what you want. But I have done it and been there and back more then once. And I here about people tell me what they want all the time. But do you have what it takes to achieve your goals. I have. Most people talk about what are your goals but honestly i have acheived them so I dont know what to tell them. If you go into to much then your bragging. SOme peole never really get the chance too acheive there goals. Maybe I am just one of the lucky ones. I play rugby we had are first tournament and beat st lawerance unv, potsdam colege, clarkson unv. and got a big trophy. So I am happy playing rugby. I love my work.
And I love my freinds. I went to college. I work as a commoditiys broker. I was in the coast guard. now I work at a marinia selling ski boats because the broker life is 24 hrs a day and was nt happy working all the time making alot of money. Sometime less is better if you have more time for your self. I do have one goal I like to teach. But sometime I do that when we teach the kids rugby clinic. I lived in maimi, washington dc , houston. So I might want to live in another country or another large city. but here its a little town I am sure you heard of lake palcid ny the olympic training center which hockey and rugby is a way of life. You either play one or the other. I still do gymnastics but I think one goal would be to teach a gymnastics team here. There not to many gymnastics schools in the area. And another goal would be to bring back the roller rink for rollerbalding and rollerskating. Rolerbalding is getting very big now. But I have to fight with the hockey rinks here. Who lose alot of money on keeping the ice in the summertime. okay that sit long but I just want to post some thoughts.

welp... let me see here.... i weigh 140, and i am 5'5". I am 17 and would like to lose some weight. For me... this is hard, because i love food... i work out every night for about 30 min. and i usually only try to eat oatmeal and one real meal a day, why can't i lose anything?

Hey I'm Sarah and I'm 5'3 I just turned 13 november 7th and its may 16th right now. I weigh 119 pds and I clearly do not think I'm fat. I play soccer, ride horses 5 days a week, and do track. 13 and 14 girls that think they are fat need to think first about how thier bodies are changing and everything. If you "Don't have time to extrasize," then EAT RIGHT! DOn't eat at fast food restaurants! You haveee no idea how much fat that puts on you. It really makes you gain weight. So just remember think b4 you think you're fat. : )

I am 17 used to be a slim 125 and then i just gave up in sports and ballooned to 198. i cant stop eating i gained 63lbs in month. i am actually eating right now.
