Teen Weight Gain Due to No Exercise

Stating the obvious, a new study has pinpointed a decline in exercise as the cause of weight gain in teenage girls.

Although what they ate did not change, the researchers said there was a doubling in the rate of excess weight and obesity in girls who had a pronounced decline in physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence.

We are by and large a sedentary population - so we cannot keep blaming fast food outlets and poor food choices.

Oh I did too, I had 2 or 3 really good friends, but what I meant is, make an effort to reach out to other people who are not your friends yet but are not the Queen Bees running the school either. To go beyond your comfort zone of the few good friends you trust and love, and meeting other people too (but without doing the whole "Mean Girls" teen movie thing of trying to be popular either, cause in real life, it ends up more like "Carrie" than like "Mean Girls", haha).

And knowing that your friends will not always do things you agree with shows you are very mature. I know adults that still think they can change their friends... it never works. You accept the things you disagree with, and if overall, the friendship still makes you happy, you keep it. If it doesn't, you move on.

The reason diet and exercise plans are so frustrating is exactly cause we try to do a lot at once. Small changes do help. It takes 3 weeks to create a habit, so after that, by eating fruit like you are doing now for a snack, it will be natural for you and you'll even prefer the fruit.

I don't know about you, but I suck at sports. So for me, it has to be more of an activity, like biking. I also really dislike walking without a purpose, so I try to run errands on foot, instead of "going for a walk".

Caline, I've answered you 2 posts before this one.

Kayla, you are not overweight, and I'm sure your stomach and thighs are not half as bad as you think. Forget the idea of "spot training", like doing crunches for a flat stomach. It doesn't work. You have to exercise your whole body, then you'll lose some fat and everything will be firmer as a whole. Pick an activity or sport that you like and do it 5x a week, for at least 40m at a time, and you'll see results.

hey chris! the reason you dont look it is that fat is stored in different places for different people. you and me for instance have fat stored around our organs, whereas some people store in in their arms, legs etc. having fat stored around your organs is, however, a whole lot more dangerous because it can slowly drip through the organ walls and block them up. Hope i helped some :)

im fourteen years old and i weigh a massive 233 lbs i tried loosing weight in the summer but i ripped a tendent in my knee and could barley walk on it which i know was probably from doing karate, putting all the pressure on my knee i need to know how to drop at least like 70 lbs when i think about writing this i feel like crying but im tough from taking 4 years of being called fat huge ugly gross everything i just want to change

Rosie is right. Also, some people are naturally heavier, because their bones weigh more, and they have more muscle. Once Marie Claire magazine showed 6 women who were all 140lb and 5'4", and they all looked very different from one another and wore different sizes. That is why weight is irrelevant, and having people go crazy because they think they have to weigh exactly 120lb or 130lb or whatever is silly.

Abigail, why do you think modeling is the thing for you? Nowadays, most models are already modeling at 13 and they are about 5'9" already, if not taller, at that age. The standards for youth and height have become even more unrealistic. And even if you did start modeling at your height now, do you think it is worth giving up your normal teenage years for that, to be working? I also don't think it is good for you if you are already so concerned with the size of your waist. You should be concerned with the party next week and your homework at 13, not with how many centimeters your waist is.

Joe, it is important to get the rest you need for your knee to recover. You don't want to make the problem worse and have to deal with it for the rest of your life. Meanwhile, you can focus on your eating. Try to avoid anything packaged, or processed, or junk food in general, and eat natural foods.

Anna, you are exercising already and you are not overweight. If you want to lose a bit of weight (I emphasize "a bit" - 5lb or so. I don't think you should consider weighing less than 140lb, since you are quite tall and probably still growing), then it is probably your eating.

I suggest eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. That means packing your snacks. Try to eat just the real, natural foods, and not any sort of manufactured food. In short: stuff that comes from a farm, not a factory. So eat a potato instead of chips, and so on. It sounds easy enough, but most of all the food available now is manufactured - which is also why almost everyone today wants to lose weight. So what you want to eat are: vegetables, fruit, meat, chicken, fish, grains (beans and stuff like that, or whole-wheat bread. that is the one exception that is not "from the farm", but if you can eat brown rice instead of ww bread, go for the rice. the more natural the better), seeds, nuts, milk, yogurt, REAL cheese (not those nasty slices of processed cheese).

Lauryn, your cravings are probably a sign you are undereating - either everything, or a few things. For example, if you eat a tiny breakfast and then just some salad for lunch, it makes sense you'll be starved and eating anything and everything later.

The answer here is: eat more. Eat more of good foods, natural, unprocessed foods, like fruits, fish, vegetables, grains like brown rice, starches like potatoes (yes, potatoes are NOT the devil), and eat more at lunch and breakfast. It is dinner that you want to make tiny, not breakfast. And eat snacks. 5-6 meals a day.

Fat-4-life, sorry I doubted you, but if you've read previous comments, you know it is all "I'm 105lb, I am so fat, I need to lose weight!", you know?

My recommendations are: exercise. Pick something and do it 5x a week for 40m at a time. It doesn't have to be sports. I hate sports. It can be something like walking, an exercise video, biking, playing DDR, dancing around in your room, etc. If it is something like walking or biking, have a "Plan B" for when the weather sucks, like "I'll walk for 40m and if the weather is terrible I'll play DDR instead". If you do chores at home, volunteer for the active ones, like vaccumming, sweeping, cleaning, raking leaves, instead of the "standing still" chores like folding clothes or doing dishes. Extra activity like that helps.

Try to eat only natural foods, not manufactured ones. Eat 6x a day, enough until you are not hungry, but not so much that you are stuffed either. Don't eat anything fried or any junk or fast food. So what you want is, instead of chips, eat a real potato, etc. What you'll be eating is meat, fish, chicken, fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, etc. Stuff that came from a farm.

James, anorexia can be defined by body weight too, not only by a mental problem. There is a difference between anorexia and anorexia nervosa.

You are a bit underweight. Keep going to counseling, it helps.

Good job, Caline. :)

Jane, 50m of exercise a day is not overexercising, it is very healthy for you. Take 1 or 2 rest days a week though, like 50m a day everyday but Sunday, and you'll be ok.
130lb for your height is not underweight, you are fine the way you are. Of course, if you are thinking you need to lose more weight, then you are nuts. You are at the bottom of the healthy range. Keep exercising and keep eating enough to maintain your weight. Weigh yourself and if you lose any more weight, then eat a bit more calories (it is easy to do by eating a few healthy but high-calorie foods like nuts or granola).

jane

Jan, but sometimes i do more than 50 minutes. Like 75 sometimes. And one day i did 2 1/2 hours! And my counselor says i don't eat enough to exercise that much or even 50min. She says i am only aloud to do 15 to 20 min a day,But i do more any way, cause it helps with my depression, and it makes me feel not as fat. I hate eating. Its hard to eat. Your really helpful, so please keep answering. :) and i am not aloud to weigh myself, the scale is hidden from me. My counselor weighs me when i go to her. And she doesn't usually tell me what i weigh. But she tells me when i lose weight, and if i start loseing more than like 5 pounds a week, then i am going to have to go to a nutritionist. I feel fat. I know i am not though. Trust me. I know people who are fat. I don't want to be like that. I need some control in my life and food is easy to control.

poor food choices are not the main reason teenagers are becoming obese. I am a 14 year old girl, i eat as much food as i want (including fatty food)and i am still skinny because i am a swimmer, and swim about 7 times a week for 2 hours each. Don't be afraid to eat fast food, just get out there and burn it off. If you arent into sports, go shopping or dance the bad food away! it works for me and im 5'7 and 110lbs

Jane, I think you should continue going to counseling. You are not fat and you should not be feeling fat, like you said. But I believe it is ok to do as much as 2 1/2h exercise a day. Of course, you have to EAT too. If you have a problem eating, then your counselor's advice is perfectly right. If you don't eat more, you can't exercise.

Now, I think you should consider trading some of your aerobic exercise for weight training. Not only will that make you healthier (and hungrier, hehe) but it will also help you view your body differently, as something capable and strong, instead of a statue to be analyzed and looked at. It really helps change your mindset, when instead of "I ran 30m and burned 300 calories" you are thinking "I managed to do biceps curls with the 10lb weights instead of the 2lb ones I started with, great!". Instead of thinking of your weight, you are thinking of how powerful you are, how capable you are.

You don't really have to weigh yourself. Just make a point to eat a bit more everyday. Since eating more food at the meals you already have will leave you feeling stuffed, add some snacks, or drink juice and smoothies during the day.

There is a site with a lot of helpful stuff to read, www.something-fishy.org It is about these feelings. You should check it out when you have some time.

And you have to take a rest day, as difficult as you may feel it is. Elect Sunday as rest day, and try to distract yourself by doing other things instead. Resting allows your body to recover, it protects your joints, and allows muscle to restore itself and to grow.

Do you eat immediately after exercise? Cause you also have to, it is very important.

Erica, you need help. I think you are depressed. Can you talk to someone, like a counselor at school, or to your regular doctor? You are not fat and should not be feeling fat. You are in fact pretty thin for your height. When people tell you that, believe them.

Exercise at least 3x a week for 40m and healthy food are good for everyone, and make everyone healthier. They are not some sort of punishment people need to lose weight - especially cause you don't have to lose weight. You should not worry about counting calories. Try to eat as many natural foods as you are hungry for, 5-6x a day. Yes, many times a day is better. Not 1 or 2 meals a day with no snacks. You'll feel so much better, and your metabolism will be better too. You'll also do better in school if you have a nice breakfast and a snack before lunch.

By natural foods I mean stuff like chicken, not chicken fingers, and potato, not chips. Anything that came from a farm and not from a factory. And try not to eat processed foods whenever that is a choice (of course, sometimes you don't have a choice, and that is ok too - what I'm talking about here is trying not to make junk or processed food a part of your regular diet). That is it. Simple enough. There is no need to obsess over calories, even for people who are actually overweight and have to lose weight, and especially for you. What you eat matters much more than how much you eat.

You are restricting your food intake to lose weight when there is no weight to lose. When we are unhappy, it is easy to blame our bodies and weight for it, and think that if only we lost weight, we'd be happy. But it doesn't work. Believe me, I've been where you are. And it is a vicious cycle, cause when we restrict our food to try to lose weight to try to be happy, we get more depressed, cause radical diets make even people who were happy before depressed. So we feel even worse, and think we need to lose weight even more, and so on. But if you make the decision now to eat enough and eat well - fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, dairy, all the things that help your physical and mental health - you'll feel better and happier already, and if the problem was something other than just having the teenage blues, you'll have the strenght to solve it too. That is all you need. Think about it, you have nothing to lose. You are unhappy now and trying to lose weight and it is not working for you.

Melissa, that is good advice, but make sure to try to eat good food on a regular basis, ok? Fast-food is not good for you, it is full of processed crap in it.

Jan, sometimes i eat after i exercise, but i mostly just drink water or eat ice or chew gum. I can't eat more, I feel so gross. I can't go with out exercise i feel really weird if i do that. I can't take a day off, then i will get depressed again. I feel fat. I know i am not. My eating disorder is NOT about weight. It is about control. I don't eat much, except for supper. That is when i eat the most. I just feel fat, and can't control anything any more. So please respond.
