Swiss Diet Shugr - Fake Sugar?
Health Sciences Group is continuing it's roll-out of a zero-calorie sugar replacement - Swiss Diet Shugr. This artificial sweetener can apparently cook just like real cane sugar (i.e. it browns and caramelizes).
The "Shugr" uses a new sweetener called "tagatose" - currently approved as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the FDA. Apparently the Swiss Diet Shugr also has a "trace amount" of Sucralose (Splenda).

I first bought a bottle of Shugr back in February. Although I enjoyed the product, the price was still high. However I'm very pleased that lately the price has been going down and the taste and texture also seems to have improved as well. I'm not sure if it's because they replaced polydextrose with maltodextrin, but it really has that sugar texture and taste now. It's worked great with all my baking experiments as well (the banana bread turned out fantastic!). This was a posting from a person at lowcarbeating.com regarding Shugr that got me excited to test out more baking experiments: "I weighed it out with my digital scale and "3 shakes" a.k.a. 1.9g, appears to be approx. 1/2 tsp. I threw 1 tsp in a pan with 1 tsp of water and got SYRUP! I didn't take it very far. Just a pale, golden color but it STAYED sticky! It didn't harden back up like E usually does and get crusty.
ReplyI can't wait to try creme brulee. I bet if you take it far enough, it'll make a nice "sugar crust"." --- Has anyone else tried baking with Shugr? So far I've had great results but I'd love to hear back from others. I will keep you guys posted as I continue to experiment with Shugr.

SHUGR is on sale at Vitamin Shoppe for $15.999 for the 1 LB (actually 1.3 lbs container) if you use this link. They have a deal with amazon to save 20% off the list price. Additionally, if $75 worth of product ordered there is FREE shipping & handling.

Finished my first attempt baking with Shugr. Baked one loaf of Banana bread which required 1 cup of Shugr to replace the 1 cup of regular sugar. It mixed up just like regular sugar. Took the same amount of time to bake like regular sugar. Now the real exciting part is the Banana bread tastes just like it always does with regular sugar. The rest of the family has tried it and they basically said it tastes like banana bread. Their excitement level is not as high as mine. A nice confirmation that it does substitute directly for Sugar. Of course its a +$5 loaf of Banana bread but we all know the price needs to come down as volume goes up or they get some large contracts. Of course what new product ever comes out at a low price? This one basically has not even entered the starting gate yet.
ReplyShugr is actually made from natural ingredients: the sugars erythritol, polydextrose and tagatose, which occur in fruits and milk, plus a trace amount of sucralose. I haven't tried baking with it yet, but it's great in tea and on berries, and made some sweet pancakes. I hope the price comes down by Thanksgiving, though--maybe now that both GNC and the Vitamin shop sell it.
Reply$16 a pound? Um, WAY out of my budget, I'm afraid. I still hate paying the $7 for the 5lb package of Splenda. I still like the idea of this Shugr, though. If it caramelizes like real sugar does, it might almost be worth the money for special occasions.
ReplyLov'n this Shugr. Great in coffee. Check out the stock HESG. I really think this is a good investment.
ReplyI have been following the stock of the company - Health Sciences Group (HESGE) that makes this product. They are late in their SEC filings and the stock has dropped drastically.
Maybe if they can substitute the taste of
Shugr for their SEC filings they will have a hit.
Disgruntled stockholder.

ReplyStill think it's a good investment?....Last close was $0.018. This stock is worthless.
