What Makes Women Attractive?
What do Kate Winslet, Venus Williams, and Jodie Kidd all have in common? They all have a BMI of around 21. Elizabeth Hurly sits at around 16.
According to research carried out at Newcastle University - there is a "perfect" BMI for a woman. Perfect - as in the most attractive to men.
In Britain, the most attractive BMI was found to be 20.85. In Malaysia the figure was marginally higher. The results also showed that attractiveness dropped quickly either side of the 20.85 figure.
Previously, waist-to-hip ratio was thought of as the attraction factor - but these researchers conclude that "BMI is even more critical, accounting for 75 per cent of body attractiveness." What's more being over this figure is "more attractive" than being under.
So while an obese woman was only half as attractive as a woman with the perfect BMI, skinnier women were rated even lower.
So much for skinny celebrities being the "measure" of an attractive ideal.

hmm... I always had a soft spot for women at about 26 BMI (i actually figured it out, hooray for me!)
ReplyHmm, that's really cool. A lot of women think "thinner=more attractive", but that isn't the case. I think most models look kinda weird and my husband thinks they look like heroin addicts, not gorgeous women. Men like women with a BODY...I don't think that's really news to them though.
ReplyWhen you say BODY in capitals, I guess you mean quite a big body. Not real waist, No proportions etc.
ReplyHI
ReplyI am male and I want to learn process telepathy for attractive people and learning process magnatic my eye.
THANK YOU.
I wonder if they mean Serena Willliams rather than Venus. Venus is tall and think while Serena carries more fat than Venus does. Whichever it is, both tennis players are healthy and vibrant.
ReplySharm and body style make woman attractive, firstly body of cource
ReplyI think the same qualities in both man and woman are attracted to each other. These are a few of many: the face, body, hair, personality, sense of humor, intelegence, and confidence; they can be observed from afar and a good companion and stability is found out only with time.
ReplyWhat do you find attracts you to women? Their body? Thin, or do most men like women with curves? If your girlfriend gained weight and filled out, would you still find her attractive? Do you mind a little facial hair, or do they have to model material?
ReplyI doubt there is a perfect BMI that looks the best for everyone. Glamour had a bunch of women who were the same height and weight, thus same BMI, and they ranged in looks from skinny to athletic to plump. People don't weigh perspective partners, they look at them, and BMI 20.85 can look very different in different people. You also have to account for personal preferences.
I'm not even gonna go into the whole personality thing.
ReplyJust one problem: body mass index is pretty unreliable. Muscle mass much???
ReplyI find that to be stupid... and slightly offensive. Frankly, if all people with the same bmi looked the same, it would make sense. The whole fertility thing is driving me nuts but it's the truth.
Although I'm female, I find the heroin addict look kind of endering in a tortured-aryist kind of way. Possibly because I have it so I'm biased. Then again maybe I have it because I like it and not the other way around. I don't know. My point is above if anyone cares(the last paragraph was more of a rant).
I don't really understand it - when I was a BMI 21, my periods became irregular and my sister told me how ill and weak I was looking (bearing in mind that she was used to a plump and cheerful me).
But then again, I lost those 13 lbs in 6 weeks by reducing my food by 50%, it was actual deprivation. Now, I'm wondering, if I was to lose that amount in 12 weeks or longer, and end up having that 'ideal' BMI, would my periods still be irregular?
I'm currently on a healthy eating (shall I say?) diet and I'm losing weight slowly. My main focus is to correct my eating for life - make sure I'm not addicted to junk food and to not eat such huge portions and not comfort eat - and so, I probably will end up being a 21 on the BMI scale. I guess I want to make sure my periods are ok while at the same time trying to have the figure I've always wanted. Is it possible?
ReplyTara, I think it depends on person to person. For myself, I find that right around BMI 22.5, in the exact middle (if you consider the old 20-24.9 standards, not the new 18.5-24.9) is where I look my best. At 21, since I have a large build, I look a bit unproportional, with a face that is too skinny for my body.
Maybe being 21 now with more muscle will make you look very different from when you weighed that before.
ReplyI think that BMI is very very limited. I think it very much has to do with fat percentage. I am 5"8 and weight 59kgs, my bmi is 19.8. I have a lot of flabby bits and its disgusting. Men say they dont want sticks, which i believe but they certainly dont want wobbly bits.
Tight toned that is what men want- anna kornicova (sorry for spelling) is considered a "bigger" girl yes, but she has a bmi of 18??? It is because she is toned.
Swim ware models are (what I'd expect) men to be most attracted too. I don't think many men can deny that.
These are simple facts. Men - look at the bmi of the women who you believe is the most attractive in the world.
ReplyJen, I think you see yourself as much worse than you really are. You are trying to achieve a level of perfection that only exists with Photoshop. Swimsuit models don't look like swimsuit models without photoshopping.
I also think you are selling men short. Most men are attracted to a variety of body types and shocker, some of them even consider personality part of the package too.
ReplyOkay - one thing I had a problem with was that I assure you - if Elizabeth Hurley's bmi was 16 she would book dead or attached to a feeding toob. It is definitely above 18. I'm not a fan of the stick thin look either but based on the fact that guys seem to think victoria secret girls gorgeous, they are very far from 20.85. What source polled this?
ReplyIm really happy the perfect bmi is 20.85. i was happy to find out that im the perfect bmi im 5ft6.5 and weigh 131 pounds i always thought i was chubby but i guess i was wrong :) hehe. i mean obviously guys prefer slim girls if the perfect bmi is 20.85 thats on the lil side
ReplyI'm 6ft tall and when I was down to 165 (which is a 22.4 BMI) people thought I was bulimic (they saw me eat, so they knew I wasn't anorexic!) I looked disgusting. Even at that point, I was still a size 10! Sounds huge doesn't it? I think there is no such thing as a "perfect" BMI...it is all about how you carry the weight you have and height does have a lot to do with it. I'll never be able to wear single digit clothing and to some that sounds like I'm fat. It's pretty sad that we put these ideals on ourselves and others (sometimes things we'll never be able to achieve)
ReplyIm 5ft 7 and weight 124pounds ( 8st12) and have a bmi of 19.4 i dont really understand how you can find out the perfect bmi :S i mean toned up girls look the best n they usual weigh more couse of the muscle.
Replyand ive heard that men like size 12 girls best hmm another bull shit story my m8s got a bmi of 21.5 and is a size 10 so how the fuk can 20.85 be a size 12. perfectic.... i red in a mag that a bmi of 20 - 25 is healthy n under is underweight thats bullshit.. these stupid pheoris r made up by fat chicks feeling bad for them selfs stuffin four bars of chocolate down them selfs n watchin neighbours.... lol im underweigt and 10 a bets i look better than any chick at a bmi of 22 - 24 wierdos.
Im right wit u katie!! im 5'3 ,about 108lbs and same BMI i thnk i last checked.. it says im fine, but i know im not, i look skinny as hell.. so i think they tryna make the fat ppl thnk they aren't so fat u know?? i should be around 125lbs, and even then(wen i was 2yrs ago) i still felt like i needed some extra pounds. noone cud believe i was 126lbs at the time. they said where is it? haha . im sick of all these diet fads, and everytime i go foodshoppin most of the foods nowadays r low fat, fat free, " " % fat free, low sugar, low carb.. WTF?? not everyone in this damn world is fat..wut about us chicks and guys? how am i supposed to gain my weight if almost everything is diety shit??!! i need that fat and that sugar and those carbs!! everyone is so caught up by these diets and exercises and "miracle foods"!! ppl r so ignorant.. how they fall for these gimmicks! man all u need to do is jus eat healthy, chill with all these junk foods and late night snacks, drink some damn water, dump the soda, lessen ur portions at dinner and get off that fat ass!! simple! no wonder ppl have somany health problems. u thnk its hard to lose weight? shit try bein a skinny ass young girl whose mother is skinny and try really hard to gain 15lbs, with all these diety foods around.
Replyoh did i mention, im short, thin, but damn i still look good? haha toodlez pplz.. noone likes the anorexic chick duh!! and noone likes the obese chick duh!! but hey thers always somebody for everyone..
ReplyHow a given size or weight or BMI looks on your depends on how tall you are and how you're built. A 12 isn't a 12 isn't a 12 -- I, at 5'0", am fat at size 12, but a taller woman might not be. And BMI 20 isn't BMI 20 isn't BMI 20 either, it could look very different depending on how much of you is bone or muscle or fat.
You'll probably be happy to know that 20-25 as normal is an old definition, the new one is 18.5-25. Although I take severe exception to your attitude that just because you fall outside the norm that the norm must have been made up by "fat chicks" bingeing on chocolate and watching soaps. Maybe you're just jealous that us "fat chicks" can spell and you can't.
ReplyThis research is British. A UK size 12 is an American size 8.
Replywell girls , i have been told that guys . !well not all ofthem ,,, like a nice round bum not so big on the top unles your naturally giftrd then thats a brucie bonus in it ! its hard isnt it girls to get that hour glass figure """ as im just polishing off a whole lettuce lol not !!!!!!!! beauty is in the eye of the beholder i mean !!! yeah its good to loose a couple of pounds if you feel the need to but my moto in life is take me as i am and if you dont like it then doodle off ! half of these so called brad pitt lads !!! not think they have some god given right to slag us off be it for our looks , size ,boobs , legs ,hips , so shall we put them on a stage and have our own oppinion of there vital statistics then lol because most of them dont measuer up anyway lol keep it going girls and dont be fooled in to thinking you need to be any size just be yourselfs and enjoy life xxx
Replybut people look so different with clothes off. alot of bigger people hide very well in clothes but once it comes off.... all hell breaks loose...as that is what i was told and have seen. not all are like this but alot of them hide under clothes... a nice rounded butt can look nice with clothes on but when it comes off... its not that great.
ReplyIt really depends on opinion but 20 is seen as ideal, its very slim in comparision to the average BMI but not as skinny as many celebs and supermodels who tend to have a BMI of under 20.
ReplyAlso remember the BMI is not scientific fact its
based on assumptions, many people do not fit the ideal weight range and are classed as underweight or overweight yet can still be healthy. The average woman is actually classed as overweight according to the charts and therefore viewed as fat by many people despite being normal and healthy.
so am i under weight? 5ft 7in 123-125 pounds?
ReplyThis BMI thing has kind of pissed me off. Because of it, I've tried to gain weight and felt horrible stuffing my face and thinking my health is bad, with no result: I’m a person that's naturally thin, I can't gain much weight! It's extremely unreliable. See, I am very healthy and my body shape is very nice: I am thin and yet I have a nice hourglass shape. I eat very well, not little at all. But my BMI is apparently 17,9. Underweight? I thought I was going crazy. I don't feel underweight, I don't look underweight and I almost never get sick, but by world standards I am an unhealthy little stick and now I learn most man won't find me attractive? HUH? Is that seriously what men rate a woman's appearance by? How much fat she has inside her? Yeah, I don't think so. What happened to personality and charm? Look at Adriana Lima, her BMI is like 16 or 17 and many, many men go crazy over her. So I definitely agree, BMI is extremely unreliable because women with the same one can look WAY different from one another. So, eat as much as you need to and just love yourself the way you are. Those "ideals" and "perfects" we see in magazines are all airbrushed and therefore inexistent!:)
+ mary, yeah, that's true. When you put clothes on all your features (like breasts and butt) tend to look smaller than they actually are and their shape may look worse or better, depending on what you're wearing.
ReplyWhat idiot told you that? Everyone knows "underweight" is the gold standard of beauty. Men fall all over themselves for exposed ribs and jutting hip bones.
I wish I were kidding, by the way.
ReplySo is Mrs.J's BMI 17.9! She is fit and what's more important, very healthy! She rarely has minor diseases, like colds and has no major medical problems. She gets plenty of exercise and eats mostly a vegetarian diet with some seafood and low fat dairy.
ReplyStay trim and fit and you will be glad you did!
Careful there...I have a BMI of 17.9 and right now I am not at my healthiest. My period's stopped because I don't have enough body fat (I've measured it three ways and it averages out to about 7%) and several people tell me I look anorexic. The key point is: BMI is crap. Go by body fat percentage because different people have different lean mass amounts and some of us are naturally muscular and must necessarily have a higher BMI. Just like some people are smaller and have a lower BMI.
ReplyHey Spectra!
ReplyHow's your marathon training going? You had mentioned that you were planing to run one this summer. My friend just ran the Grandma's in Duluth and finished 3rd!
Tatiana Titova 2:39:58
It would be great if women stopped looking at those trashy magazines that portray skinny as being attractive. IT ISN'T! My ideal woman is someone like Nigella Lawson. Anything but skinny.
ReplyThis is way off topic, but Duluth is my home town! Too funny. My uncle and aunt are marathon runners and have run in Grandma's about a million times.
ReplyCongratulations to your friend. That's a great time!
Hey Dr. J...the training is going fine, aside from the fact that I am losing too much fat. I've been putting in about 70-80 miles a week and it's been pretty effortless. Some days my legs feel like Jello, especially after my long runs, but I think I'll be good to do the Green Bay Marathon in September. After that though, I'm cutting back because I'm trying to conceive and I need to get fatter in order to do that :)
ReplyGlad to hear that your training is on schedule, Spectra!
ReplyD-Nic! I'll pass the good words along to Tatiana next time I see her, thank you!
Tatiana is special. Of course she is a great athlete, but more, a happy, generous person. Her original motivation for being a professional marathoner was her new born son and her need to put food on the table! Hopefully, Spectra, in the not so distant future, you will be running with your child and you can share your stories of their beginnings. Best of luck!
PS: I just realized that Tatiana holds the course record at the Green Bay Marathon! If she is running it this year, just stay close to her and you will have a great race :-)
ReplyThat is a fact, most men in particular don't like the sight of thin girls. I suspect that the Victoria's Secret models are just airbrushed or digitally modified.
ReplyI'd be very surprised if any man turned down meeting any Victoria Secret model pre-airbrushed and modified. I usually don't comment on these opinions but come on, a little realism from the mob, please.
Replyhi all your comments are very insightfull/ i am a instructor in a gym and the whole thing with the bmi is a little over rated/not for all.but i have a bmi of 28.9 and im a size 10.i do alot of weight training and im not big and buff just nicly toned.all body's are diffrent shape and sizes.i think its how you look after yourself and how woman see them self in the real world, its only natural for men to like a good looking woman. cos when u go back to the day why we are made/ its just 1 big natural feeling. and i not deep down i like a good looking guy and i know for a facted guys hate being fat or over weight too, just like woman. All im trying to say is u only feel happy with ur body when u truly feel happy with in your self.
ReplyI love this diet blog site! I truly believe the mind is controlling our body mass/weight. Yes you need 1200-1500 calories a day of healthy fruits/vegtables and protein. However, you need a buddy more!
If your talking to your friend, your not eating, if your typing on your blog, your not eating.
Positive thinking does not give one hunger pain.

Well lets get something straight love *cough* for a start theres a reason ur called chicken girl aint they ... not to be rude. Well i may be a dumb blonde who cant *speel* but atleast im one with a hot body. not a 5ft size 12 hipo you would have to be atleast 5ft6 to pull a size 12 of and obviously you dont men proberly get lost in ur rolls when they cuddle you, its a fair way of sayin * i wanna ride on your rippels * so dont critasize me on what i said couse ur obviously insecure.... SO PUT DOWN THE RIBS AND GO TO SOME SIT UPS
ReplyOR ILL GET RICHARD SIMMINS ON YA
YA FAT BIRTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love ya biiii xxx
"Katie" Your so freakin rude. I'm a catwalk model and I always get criticized by the way I look. Because I'm 5ft9 and a size 6-8. I think it's really unfair and unacceptable what you said about "Chicken Girl" anyone is beautiful no matter what size they are. You should never underestimate or put down someone because of what they look like. That girl could lead a happy life and then people like you come along and make them self-conscious. How do you know that she doesn't look in the mirror everyday and cry thinking that shes "obese". I don't think your in any position to judge anyone because your obviously not so perfect yourself. I suggest you find some dignity and sort your head out cause your a selfish, judgmental bitch. And if you would have said that to me I would have found out where you lived and kick the shit outa you.
ReplySo next time you think about writing something, put yourself in that persons position and think about how you'd feel if you were on the other end of the computer reading what had been said about you.
