The Future of Fat Camps
A NY Times article reports that weight loss camps for young people are slowly growing in popularity - but do they really work?
"Coming home from camp was hard," Lexi, now 14, said. "I knew what I had to do, but I saw everyone eating at school.
The incredible thing is that kids still get teased at the camps - like a pecking order from thinnest to fattest.
...Danielle Rothman, now 17, spent three summers at Camp Shane. "Everyone at Shane was overweight, yet people were still being made fun of about their weight," said Ms. Rothman, who lives in Dix Hills, N.Y.. "The more overweight kids are still made fun of...
Are these camps really the answer?

Im really heavy for my age and i just dont now how to start dieting so im thinking joining a summer diet camp in england but which one to join and i really need a agood one because i dont want to be looin like a sack of potato on my prom night so i really need you guys to suggest a good camp.
ReplyDespite the tone of some writers, every negative comment regarding Camp Shane is true. Go to Eagle's Nest Camp (enf.org) in Ashville, NC. It's cheaper, more fun and addresses the individual, not the weight. And as we all know, the individual issues are the source of weight problems.
Replywho ever stated the above is just too full of negativity towards this issue, how can you missguid people like this, yes there is some truth in whan you say but very little, these camps deffinatly do help through guiding and teaching the children the right way to live and eat, have you evereven been to one??? and as for you attitude, i bet you fail in allot of aspects of life, very negative!!
ReplyHi my daughter is also 13. She attended camp shane in new york last summmer and had a great time..she lost 22 pounds looked great , felt great but was not taught how to keepthe weight off..there was no follow up!!! This camp was extemely Large!!! I was dissappointed in the fact of no follow up..or family interaction..telling us what to do..they did not identify the reasons my daughter was overeating..they told me they did therapy (cognitive behavioral therapy) which i do NOT think happened..what that does is allow the child to identify why, when they overeat...it teaches them other methods ,once they identify what triggers them to overeat..they focused on a diet rather than a lifestyle change. I have investigated many camps..and wellspring in north carolina which has about 100-150 campers sounds great to me...THey teach them how this is a lifestyle change!!!!!!and it can be controlled and youu can be in control of your life.it's not about a diet rather a lifestyle change they have intense cong.behavioral therapy..and they don't want your child to be back year after year(unlike camp shane) and they have followup...via the computer once the child returns home..they have a family workshop at the end of camp which teaches the parents what the child has learned..and how every one in the house needs to focus on healthy eating..the lifestlye change...i hope this helps you...i know though what you are going through it is painful for your daughter as well as the whole family battling weight issues..if you have any questions please feel free ................to email me...
ReplyCAmp shane is certainly NOT a sham. David promises one thing that the child will loose weight! Thats all he promised my parents some 25 years ago. I went to shane for 9....no not a typo 9 years. The ettenbergs are not psychologists, nor can they be there every time we try to bury our emotions with food. I eventually lost the weight on my own (80lbs.of it) then gained it back again and then had a gastric bypass and have not gained it back. Ive learned from my lessons and use exercise to control my weight.....but yes....I still have a lot of great memories, and some not so good ones of camp. Iwent from ages 12-19.
ReplyIM 14 and i need a camp to help me lose weight but unfortunatley i can only find ones that are like 4,000 for a month and my parents cant afford it anyone know a cheaper on for me?
