Get Real Dr Phil
The PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) has taken out an ad in USA Today hoping to debunk the premise that dairy contributes to weight loss. Taking a punt at Dr. Phil's "Got Milk" ads:
You don’t mince words, so neither will we. Your milk mustache ads are dishonest and do a huge disservice to the public.
More like this in Media Watch
Not that it necessarily negates the truth of the ad, but your readers should know that the milk-makes-you-fat meme is still controversial (Jane Brody surveyed the scientific evidence in some detail in the New York Times just the other day: http://nytimes.com/2005/06/14/health/nutrition/14brod.html ), and PCRM is labeled by its adversaries as a PETA front vegetarian organization with few physician members, which seems to be true (Wikipedia has a good rundown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physicians_Committee_for_Responsible_Medicine ).
ReplyIf you take this argument and break it down to its most basic premise, the idea (I got this from my high school hygiene class, I guess it was one of the rare times I actually showed up...hee hee hee...) that humans drink milk meant for baby cows does seem a little strange, no? And I'm not a fan of PCRM, either.
Think about it--1) Why are humans drinking milk meant for baby cows, 2) This so-called milk--between pasteurization and everything else it goes through, probably has little nutritional value and 3) It's homogenized--another unnatural process that gives the product uniformity by chemically forcing fat evenly into all the milk molecules so that it looks and feels smooth all around (remember the old days when the cream was naturally on top?)--I heard reports that this could possibly be a heart disease contributor as well.
Bottom line--It's probably not the best idea to drink the stuff. (Although I can't have my coffee without my cream. ;-) )

Oh, please. No more of the "milk is meant for baby cows, not for humans" nonsense. The only food "meant" for human is, how surprisingly, human milk, end of story. So why do we eat bread, ham, shrimp? Don´t tell me that cow muscles are any less "wrong" than milk...
ReplyWhy are humans drinking cow milk - so very simple. It contains quantity of important fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamines. What it goes through in the whole process before it arrives on your table is another thing - however, statements as "probably has little nutritional value" are not really there.
I´m not standing behind dr Phil - milk won´t help you lose weight, it´s food evolved to gain it with. It´s full of fats and sugars, for gods´ sake. But, the latest fashion, or so it seems to me, of refusing milk on the base of "it´s unnatural" is just as stupid and misleading. Milk is a valuable food, and one we accustomed to through milenniums.
Speaking of unnatural, going to refuse vaccination, pasteurization and penicilin any time soon?
Milk is a valuable food, and one we accustomed to through milenniums.
The sad truth is that many people's ancestors did not drink milk, and their bodies are not accustomed to it. PCRM is simply trying to debunk the PR line that people need milk to be healthy, and PCRM does it for many reasons - public health, animal advocacy, truth in advertising . . .
ReplyOh, poo. My ancestors, being a mix of continental slavs (ukraine, czech, hungarian and russian as far as I know), have probably never seen seafood from a distance. Should I never try oyster? I´m not meant to eat it! I´m not accustomed to it!
Most of world´s population have milk in their diets, to some extent, btw. But really. Milk doesn´t hurt you. I agree fully with what PCMR say - milk isn´t vital to your health, there isn´t a great number of things that are, really, and milk definitely isn´t a magic drink to make you lose gain (like there ever was a thing like that) - I disagree with you, because your "I´ve read that perhaps" and "not like I showed up in high school hygiene class, mind you" spiel is exactly that, unsubstantiated guesses lacking both actual biological knowledge and common sense.
ReplyBecause it looks like today, a horrifying number of people seem to divide into two groups, one proclaiming: "milk is the key to everything, godly mana, elixir of life!" - and the other, which would be yours. And they´re both equally hurtful and stupid.
Wow, what is with the bashing going on???
The truth is that milk DOES provide some nutrients, calcium, and vitamins that humans need---but it also provides a lot of fat, cholesterol, and risk for heart disease, cancer, etc.
It is GOOD for kids to have milk, but as adults, why kid yourself?
All Dr. Phil cares about is money $$$$$$$ NOT people
ReplySkim milk doesn't have fat, or, as far as I know, cholesterol. I don't know what to do with your statement that milk causes cancer. Did I miss something? Is there any evidence to back that up?
