Coke Zero: Confused Anyone?

Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.

Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.

So how many flavors of Coke are there now?

  • Diet Coke
  • Caffeine Free Diet Coke
  • Diet Coke Plus
  • Diet Coke with Lime
  • Diet Coke with Lemon (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Cherry Coke
  • Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (added 2006)
  • Diet Vanilla Coke (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Coke with Splenda (being discontinued)
  • Coca-Cola Zero
  • Coca-Cola C2
  • Coca-Cola Classic
  • Coca-Cola with Lime
  • Coca-Cola Blak (added 2006)
  • Cherry Coke
  • Cherry Coke Zero (added 2007)
  • Vanilla Coke
  • Caffeine Free Coca-Cola Classic

What's your poison?

UPDATE Nov 05 - Goodbye Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon (see USAToday)
UPDATE Dec 05 - Coke + coffee mix on it's way (Coca-cola Blak)
UPDATE Apr 06 - Diet Coke with Splenda is being discontinued.
UPDATE Jan 07 - Cherry Coke Zero added.
UPDATE May 07 - Diet Coke Plus added.

Where is the proof they cause weight gain, exactly?

Coke Zero & Diet Coke are not at all alike. Coke Zero tastes like a lighter version of Coke Classic and Diet Coke just tastes like a diet cola with aftertaste. Coke has never claimed that Diet Coke tates like regular Coke. However, they do with Coke Zero and it's true. As for the weight gain and Coke Zero making you hungry, I once again disagree with Max. Since I've been drinking Coke Zero, I've dropped 35 pounds and do not crave sweets anymore. The Zero makes me feel like I'm drinking regular Coke and it satisfies my sweet tooth.

Does anyone know how many ounces of diet soda you can drink before calories start counting?Example:0 calories for 12 ounces, how many calories in 36 ounces?

Math was always my worst subject, but I'm guessing diet sodas have from 2-4 calories a serving. It's only 0 on the nutritional label cause it's a new math :-)

SS,

can you provide links/info on studys that relate to aspartame causing people to crave carbs (sugar, chocolate), eat more, and consequently gain weight.

Actually, I am not a diet coke fan.... but I like coke zero. It doesn't have that same disgusting taste, even though it still doesn't taste a thing like coke.... the only problem is that after a week of dirnking it, I get an upset stomache.

Regular Coke is better, but Coke Zero is better than Diet Coke because it doesn't taste like I-want-to-gag.

I have drank diet coke for years but recently I tried Coke Zero. I LOVE IT!!! To me it taste more like coke classic but of course not as sweet. Please don't ever phase it out. I tried the diet coke with splenda also. Althought I use splenda occassionally I did not like the coke product with splenda.

I believe it's not aspartame that makes you crave real sugar, but the fact that you sort of fool your body into thinking your getting sugar but without the effects, thus you crave it. No studies to link, just something I remember reading, makes sense though.

I've been dieting for over a year now and I've been drinking coke zero, love it. I've tried diet coke and stuck with it for several months but I've always gone back to regular coke, but I've had no problems sticking to coke zero and I honestly can't tell the difference anymore. Actually since I started drinking it I never get heartburn anymore.. I used to get it daily, no longer.

For the last couple of months I've been drinking Vanilla Zero and while it's not quite as good as vanilla coke from Sonic, it's a nice change from the norm.

Also, to the guy on the first page who mentioned how harmful coke is to your stomach and said to pour it in a couple and drop a penny inside... Um, my stomach isn't made of copper, zinc, or tin for that matter.

I've got a better idea for him. Let him try putting a penny in a jar filled with stomach acid and see how long the penny lasts.

Coke Zero absolutly does not taste like real Coke. I disslike diet drinks for the nasty flavors. While I have not tried non-diet Rockstar, I do indeed like the cream soda flavor or Diet Rockstar. I am glad my first (only) taste of Coke Zero was a free sample. The Agency handing out the freebies at Six Flags seemed suprised by my displeasure and wretching noises when I took that horribly flavored sip! The Coke CO2 was closer to Real Coke, as a semi-diet drink, but it was not readily available while I was doing the low carb diet bit.
I tried to post or email a Coke Zero comment via the Coca-Cola website but it was always under repair or being maintenenced.
I'd guess people who really believe Coke Zero tastes like the real thing also believe American Processed cheese tastes like real Cheddar!

Sorry Steve, but you're WRONG!!!!! I've been a Coke drinker for 40 years and I know that Coke Zero does taste very close to Coke. Especially when you're drinking it wth a meal and it's cold. Is it exactly like Coke? Of course not. But for a Zero calorie drink, it's damn close. A lot closer than Diet Coke. I do agree that C2 did also taste very close to Coke when cold and I drank it exclusively for the year and a half that it was available. But it's gone and Zero is the only sugar free drink that can hold a candle to it. I suggest you buy a couple of 20 oz. bottles of Coke Zero and make sure they're good and cold and try it again, perhaps with pizza or a burger and you'll see what I mean. I had a HUGE non-believer who said he couldn't stand Coke Zero back down and tell me it did taste like Coke "when he drank it with a meal". He now will drink it from time to time. So open your mind to it and don't go by a sample you had at Six Flaggs. I didn't care for it the first time I tried it after being a Coke and then a C2 drinker. But I promise you that if you like regular Coke but want a diet alternative, Coke Zero WILL grow on you.

ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE INSANE. DIET POP AND ANY FAKE SUGAR IS POISON. YOU'RE ALL CAUSING MASSIVE INTERNAL DAMAGE ESPECIALLY TO YOUR BRAIN. [...]

Moron, you hold no evidence nor even a logical argument.
Your argument is riddled with logical fallacies, falses, and half-truths.
The FDA runs numerous extensive studies on artificial sweeteners before allowing their use, and this is only under the premise that they are 100% safe.

You say these 'poisons' stay within the brain...firstly, they are NOT poisons.
The sweetener used in most diet drinks is aspartame, which is made of completely natural chemicals--the amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid, both necessary components of the human body.
The amount of these amino acids present in one can of drink is less than the average piece of fruit or other food (Yes, most foods contain phenylalanine and aspartic acid), and bothe chemicals are handled in a way that necessary intake amounts are used by the body and excess amounts are excreted.
These chemicals NEVER do NOT go into the brain and remain there, they are natural amino acids used by the body as it needs.

So you say that 'fake sugar' is poison, hmm?
Sugar causes diabetes, has a major effect on weight and health, and damages teeth.
Which is the true poison?

I shall bring to everyone's attention that there is no such thing as an obtopsy either.

Now, where could PROFESSIONAL scientists have gone wrong in declaring artificial sweeteners as safe when they are not?
Oh yes, the saccharin case, oh but wait, it was just a scare, they proved a few years ago that it's not carcinogenic or dangerous in any way.
Hmm, oh well, looks like nobody has been wrong after all.
Tough break ay moron?
Well, I daresay you probably won't reply to this considering you are just some ranting fool who posted a bunch of trash from the opinion of your twisted impressionable mind, and many months have passed since then, but I will post this anyway for my love of sugarless drinks.

No ones commented on Coca-Cola Blak yet?? I LOVE this stuff, thought it's a bit pricey. I don't even like regular coke, and just started drinking Diet Coke with Lime (that's what my office stocks up on), but Blak is one of my new bad habits. It's smooth, and gives me a pretty gook energy kick. mmmmmm :)

I don't think it's far for people to automatically assume that just because some people drink soda that they are over weight. I'm happy to see that companies go out of their way to make their product more appealing to the consumer. This will help many people who are addicted to sodas to lose weight. Also for those, like myself, who would just like to treat themselves to a soda.

Tastes great and no real big after taste.

For those concerned about losing weight while still drinkin sodas, just rember moderation. Treat yourself to a soda ever now and then instead of drinking it by the gallons; your end up on the healthier side and that cold soda will taste that much better as a treat.

They should put honest labels on their cans like "causes cancer, fat, and bone density loss" Maybe people would wake up.

Cherry Coke Zero is amazing. Over the summer I was in a really intense class, and this stuff got me through it. I really don't like regular cherry coke. It tastes like syrup to me. It took me a little bit to get used to the taste of cherry coke zero, but when I finally transitioned, I can't go back to regular cherry coke.

For those who cringe at the sweetness of regular coke, but can't handle the diet stuff, you might want to swig at a C2.

I was a huge fan of C2 for a while - probably because of a guilt factor of everyone nagging me about my pop addiction. I know - it's bad... I get it and well, I can't help it.

C2 tasted better than the classic coke - less teeth-grindingly sweet. I felt better drinking that stuff for a while, and then all of a sudden.. I couldn't find it anymore.

I moved on and switched to zero, and felt cheated for a while, but dealt with it. Then when C2 showed up on the shelf, I grabbed it right away, threw it in the fridge, and waited...

But you know what... it turned out to be too much, and I went back to zero, and that's where I stand now.

I heard the Blak is revolting, and I trust that opinion. A coffee and coke blend could only have bubbled up from hell, and should never be trusted.

And for those who think we're all nuts for drinking coke. Yes..yes we are. As long as we're enjoying it.

So is there any difference between them? Is one of them more tasteful or diety???

Reply
Chris

Coke Zero should actually be less sweet than Diet Coke.

The only real difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that the Diet Coke we know and love is actually Diet NEW Coke--the soda that flopped so badly in the eighties. When they went back, they never changed the formula back to Coke Classic.

So Coke Zero is the first REAL Diet Coca-Cola Classic available. That's why it tastes so much more like regular Coke.

I'm not sure why some people have suggested that Coke Zero is sweeter--it shouldn't be. New Coke was sweeter than Coke Classic, and Diet Coke should be sweeter than Coke Zero.

I am having to agree with what it is that you are saying. Coke Zero is just like regular coke. much a superiour to diet of coke. i think that liking coke is the same thing because if zero is tasting differant and diet is not so much then it is drinking coke!! haha
I am not in believing why diet is now to buy when zero will be brought with just coke...

I think this is probab..Definately the lamest string I have ever read on any website ever. You are arguing over Mountain Dew vs Coke Zero, well here's some news. Your the F***ing Zero Buddy. Try tasting my carbonised Wee, it tastes a little like Diet, sugar free, Caffein free, Lime and Orange with a cherry twist, Mountain Slash-Aid. But I still prefer my neighbours waz as it is a little less tangy.

Cheers, you Duds....Dudes.

What's with this goofball, SS? I think he/she is the one that made this silly movie and is just trying to drum up hits on the site.

Why exactly would companies like Coke put deadly chemicals in their products to kill off their customers? DUH?

Why would the FDA try to kill off the American people who pay the taxes that pay their salaries?

I think that you are practicing a form of terrorism by spreading this crap on the internet? Are you a doctor or scientist? Can you confirm beyond a reasonable doubt that this information you are spreading is true? Sure I read some of this junk, and that is exactly what it is, junk. Google some of these "famous doctor's" names - they simply do not exist. This is a discussion about the virtues of Diet Coke products. If you don't like it, leave.

Personally, my husband and I are both healthier since we stopped drinking the full sugar soda. He is no longer pre-diabetic, and I am 20 lbs. lighter, which has actually helped my depression and anxiety disorder. I am no longer on medication for it.

And we love Coke Zero.

Colas are very unhealthy. An article in the New York Times said that drinking 2 cans of cola a day, diet or regular, doubled the risk of kidney problems (kidney stones or other problems). This is likely due to the phosphoric acid content, which pulls calcium out of the bones.. and calcium can then be deposited in the kidneys, causing stones.

This effect didn't happen with non-cola sodas.

That said, if you do drink cola or diet cola, be sure to drink plenty of water, as water helps to dilute the concentration of minerals which can lead to kidney stones and other kidney problems.

Here in Asia we don't have Diet Coke, but Coke Light, which isn't displayed on your list of Coke products. Coca Cola still hasn't explained to my satisfaction what the big deal is. Coke Zero tastes exactly like Coke Light to me, yet both are on the market. The ingredients sound exactly the same too. There's a bad aftertaste in my mouth that a lot of marketing mumbo-jumbo is being foisted on a gullible public once again. One big "huh?" for the folks in Atlanta.

I have a question- what makes a soda diet? I was in Whole Foods yesterday and saw Diet Steaz which had something like 60 calories in a bottle. While is this diet? What is low cal? Are these terms just marketing spin or are there standards?

Any insight into what makes a product diet would be welcomed.

Reply

Technically speaking, diet just has to mean a product is free of something - usually sugar. Calories don't have to be reduced. So for example is the Steaz is made with fruit juice, but no sugar is added, it can be high-calorie and diet. Diet chocolate, for diabetics, is usually higher-calorie than regular, although it has no sugar. And you can have diet condiments which just don't have salt, for example.

Light is a product that has a reduction of at least 30% (I think it is 30% - could be 25%?) in either sugar, fat, or calories.

You all are on the internet. Do a search and see how drinking soda pop over time and it's effect on the human body. And diet sodas do more damage than regular sodas. A lot of you like bashing people who are just trying to enlighten you to the truth, and that is totally ignorant. Do your own research, because you are killing yourself slowly by drinking soda, especially diet soda.

Coke Zero does taste the closest to regular Coke, but has given me massive headaches (same as Sprite Zero). I did notice that once I stopped drinking Diet Soda all together I started losing weight and it was easier to keep off. My body does not process sweeteners well. If I eat something sweet, I make sure it is with real sugar. I wish that the US Coke would be like all the other Coke in the world which is made with REAL sugar not corn syrup. Aspartame is bad, but corn syrup is even worse!!!! Corn syrup is in everything and it is the main culprit for diabetese and obesity. My golden rule = moderation and exercise (unfortunately everything seems to be bad for you these days)!

This is so true spledna is a good advancement in non call sweenters but it still has issues with brain chemistry like the others do.

it would be so much better if industry stopped poisoning people, but sadly the only way for that to happen is to ban it like hydrogenated oils there comes a time when baning the right to use soemthign thats lightly harmful (like the crusade on smoking even if the establishment has smoking and non smoking sections ban it non the less because the fad of righteous igdination has not ended over it yet).

I wish Jones pure cane sugar sodas had a normal caffeinated one I'd buy that but of the 3 or 4 flavorers avalbile here theres just the caffineless flavored ones...

I never used salt so I don't miss it,sugar I am dealing with but caffine is my drug of choice....I hate beers and only like some coolers/wines.. i don't smoke either :P caffine is my vice of choice :P

I love splenda its a shame they went with zero, apsterime gives me a headache still but zero tastes better than posiony diet drinks.

Diet RC with splenda is great but hard to find in the area so I have a choice of zero or reg soda, I tend to mix reg and zero when I can, or just drink ice tea I make myself.

I am slowly loathing retail products mass marketed to witless sheeple, the contracts with sweetner companys is more profitable to them than making something alil more heathery.... altho i bet in 10 years splenda will be found to be "bad" LOL.

I've been trying to lose weight, and so will only drink diet. The weight wasn't coming off,and then I read that aspartame can hinder weight loss. I started reading the labels and staying away from aspartame. It seemed to make a diff with my quest, but guess what? Splenda, the only alternative I've found, aparantly causes severe bladder irritation; feels just like an infection, but can be remedied just by drinking a ton of water. I can, however, drink sweet-n-low which is saccahrin, ye old stand-by from 40 years! I use it in my tea. Unfortunately, a diet pop sweetened with saccahrin is not to be found.
Shoot, I would just love a cold carbonated drink!

Reply
Kris Tuttle

The waiters in Paris are pushing Coke Zero, saying it doesn't have Aspartame. They describe it as being "unsweetened" which is of course mighty silly. Still people try and look up the information later. We found it did have less (1/2) than Diet Coke but also this ace-k which may taste better but is just another sweetener.

Water, Juice, Coffee, Beer, Wine - probably all better choices
