Coke Zero: Confused Anyone?

Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.

Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.

So how many flavors of Coke are there now?

  • Diet Coke
  • Caffeine Free Diet Coke
  • Diet Coke Plus
  • Diet Coke with Lime
  • Diet Coke with Lemon (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Cherry Coke
  • Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (added 2006)
  • Diet Vanilla Coke (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Coke with Splenda (being discontinued)
  • Coca-Cola Zero
  • Coca-Cola C2
  • Coca-Cola Classic
  • Coca-Cola with Lime
  • Coca-Cola Blak (added 2006)
  • Cherry Coke
  • Cherry Coke Zero (added 2007)
  • Vanilla Coke
  • Caffeine Free Coca-Cola Classic

What's your poison?

UPDATE Nov 05 - Goodbye Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon (see USAToday)
UPDATE Dec 05 - Coke + coffee mix on it's way (Coca-cola Blak)
UPDATE Apr 06 - Diet Coke with Splenda is being discontinued.
UPDATE Jan 07 - Cherry Coke Zero added.
UPDATE May 07 - Diet Coke Plus added.

I have to agree with David that there's something wrong with the perception that Coke Zero tastes anything like original Coke. I remember Coke from the 1950s, before the diet revolution, when it was sweetened with cane sugar. Coke Classic with high fructose corn syrup is an entirely different drink. When Coke Zero was launched recently, I tried it side-by-side with Coke Classic, and can report that they are both bad, CZ being the worse of the two because of its aftertaste.

Some time ago I reconciled myself to Diet Coke, since I couldn't have the real stuff. A different drink to be sure, but better for my preference than anything else Coke is making, and far better than Pepsi. (Back in late '85, when New Coke had been renamed Coke II, I did a side-by-side with Diet Coke. Despite so-called research that claimed New Coke merely Diet Coke with natural sweeteners restored, I found no similarity in the two. New Coke/Coke II was some Pepsi-esque derivative with even more sugar in it, in my opinion.)

I love the taste of Coke Zero, but everytime I drink it, without fail I get a bad headache. I am a GP and done some research in this area and have found this is reasonably common. I love the stuff, but now I have to drink it with an Analgesic at hand, small price to pay for this fantastic drink. This is probably not worth mentioning, but if you mix Coke Zero with Ibuprofen and Celebrex it creates drink that is like drinking 20 scotches straight.

Dash, your headache is caused by your central nervous system realizing the drink you just consumed (Coke Zero) tasted NOTHING like Coca Cola. Your system craved Coke C2, and since you fed it that carbonated turpentine, it rewarded you with a headache. Careful not to drink too much at one time or you will end up with a migrane.

Diet Coke with Splenda is still on the shelves, and is not being discontinued. Please update this info. Zero should be discontinued, because it tastes like, well, nothing. It is a total zero.

I like the fizzle fizzle you get in your mouth when you drink diet coke. YUM. It's like liquid candy. Diet coke I love you! I know it may not be good for my health cuz it has fake sugar but hey "love defeats logic". >_

I actually work for Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero is one of the fastest growing soft drinks on the market right now, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. And as an avid Cherry Coke drinker, who doesn't care too much for Diet Cherry Coke (its too close to Diet Coke for me) I am happy to inform you that Cherry Coke Zero will be launched in most US Business Units on 1/29/07. Yay! Oh,if you haven't tried it yet Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke is made the same way as Coke Zero. And as far as Sprite Zero is concerned it is still the same product as Diet Sprite, we changed nothing but the Zero name tested better in focus groups.

Sorry to hear that Coke Zero is doing well. I think it is the worst addition to the Coke line since "New Coke" back in the 1980's. It tastes NOTHING like Coca-Cola and I despise it for killing off C2 which DOES taste like a lighter version of Coke. BTW, we need another version of Cherry Coke like we need an anieurism.

David,
Bring back C2!!!!!!!!!!

Is Coke Zero being targeted at gays? Never see a chick drinking it in any of the ads.

Reply
Jan

David, maybe it is not gay men but just men. They probably figure that women are already drinking it anyway, so no need to advertise to them.

Coke Zero is being targeted at young airheads who have no clue what Regular Coke tastes like. It has an adolescent, overly fake-sweet taste that shouldn't appeal to anyone who has reached the point of shaving or getting monthly visits from Aunt Flo. Why it is selling any more than marginally is beyond me.

I have tasted Coke Regular, even back in the day where it wasn't called Coke Classic, it was just "Coke". And I still like Diet Coke better than Coke Regular, and Coke Zero better than Coke Regular. Diet Coke is better than Coke Zero though. Even if the regular had no calories, I'd still like Zero better than that.

Of course, Diet Pepsi trumps both Cokes, but that is another issue, haha.

You are totally on the point, I myself used to eat sweets with aspartame. Each day I came home from work and had to rest.

My brother told me about aspartame and that it is bad and I decided not to take it anymore. Result: after about 2 months I came home, dined and just went on with my life. No resting, no feeling completely drained of power.

Until today I look at the ingredients of everything I want to buy and look for the chemical sweeteners. Also when I see something like light I don't buy it.

A product being approved says nothing. There were more products that were safe and after 30 years when people start dying they get them of the market.

Ever think about the phenyls out there that have to avoid Nutrasweet/Aspartame with a 10 foot pole? If if werent for Splenda I would be 50+ pounds more overweight. Diet Coke with Splenda and other splenda products have saved me from a life of water w/no option.
It may not work for you - but quit attacking the products that help people like the phenylketonurics of the world that see Sucralose/Splenda as the only alternative.
It's your choice to use products with Splenda or not. Think about those less fortunate. Think about those without a choice. Use you choices and leave us alone. Quit challenging the product makers that we love - there are more of you than us, and you actually have a choice.

I personally love the taste of coke zero! I do not like the taste of other diet cokes or drinks. I was elated when I tasted my first coke zero I am diabetic and have to watch what I eeat and drink and I always loved coke. I am very happy to have a drink I enjoy that taste great.

I don't know why the original post says Diet Coke and Coke Zero are identical except for the ratio of the sweeteners (ace-K and aspartame). Another big difference is the caffeine content. Diet Coke has 1/3 more caffeine than Zero Coke. According to this page from the Coca-Cola website, http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/us_nutrition.html, Diet Coke has 31 g of caffeine for a 8 oz serving, compared to Coke Zero's 23 grams. That is pretty significant, I think.

Is Coke Zero caffine free as well? Didn't they have one that was Zero and advertised zero calories and zero caffine?

I think Coke Zero is a godsend. I Cannot believe that it hasn't completely knocked Diet Coke out of the box. It is a much better tasting drink and does taste MUCH closer to Coca Cola. Anyone who drinks Diet Coke should give it a try. I've been a Coke drinker for over 40 years and it converted me. I can now drink all I want with the taste of Coke and not put on weight. Seriously folks, give it a try.

Hi there you soda drinking dummies! Did you know that only recently air pilots were banned from drinking diet coke or pepsi, or in fact any soft drink with aspartme in it because it was affecting their central nervous system and impacting on their performance? Well go and figure!!! Everyone is so hell bent on being thin that they have forgotten about the more important things in life, like their brain!! So you may think that drinking diet sodas can help you to lose weight! I'm sure this will be a comfort to you in years to come when you sit in your wheelchair and reflect on the good old days before you had brain damage and loss of movement in your limbs!! Wake up people!!! It's not okay to pollute your body with ant poison just coz you think it can help you be thin!!! What you really need is a brain transplant! We owe it to the next generation and ourselves to be more socially conscious about the dangers lurking in food and drink! Don't believe what the government and these big wig companies tell you! They are only interested in money! Its time to educate ourselves and make a stand by refusing to allow this poison to enter our bodies or our childrens' bodies. Please take action and promote change! You would be horrified if someone try to offer you or your child poison! That's exactly what is contained in diet sodas and many low calorie foods yet it is acceptable for us to eat and drink these! The companies which promote these products are nothing more than irresponsible drug pushers who are administering poison to our nation!! I wonder if they allow any of their loved ones and indeed themselves to indulge in these foods and drinks? After all, they know the very real and present dangers!

Think on my friends!

Chow for now people!

All you guys out there who say diet coke and artifical sweetner will cause brain cancer are wrong. You guys are just confused by the rumors. Here's is the real truth about Aspartame. Check out this site and read up about aspartame: http://www.aspartame.net/rumors/A_web_of_deceit.asp

I've tried Coke zero and I really think this drink comes close to the regular coke. All diabetics and obese people who drink coke daily should try this. It is better for your health! I highly recomend it.

I'm really scared about sweeteners. I'm going to die if I have any. Plus I don't breath because I might inhale pollutants that can cause cancer. I don't want to get anything because if I don't I'll live forever. That's why I don't go out into sunlight. Don't want skin cancer either.

Seriously SS, you are the most paranoid person I've ever known of. Don't you think that the people behind the movie you keep spouting about have some sort of agenda? It's probably made by the people that make splenda.

Also, do a little research on Stevia. Some oriental countries are banning it because it's been shown to make people sterile.

?!?!?! Sterile! That can't be because it's 100% natural. Hmm... Wait a minute. So is cobra venom.

Duh!!!

Well guys, seems like you're all wrong.

The coke subsidiary drinks such as 'coke lemon' 'coke zero' etc. are made from the waste extracts from producing normal coke cola. As there is a lot of waste and sometimes errors with coke manufacturing and containers, CokaCola simply rebrand the waste material as coke zero or coke lemon ect.

mmm.... tasty..

To hear you are discontinuing Diet Coke with Splenda is VERY depressing to me! I was a total "hi-test" coke drinker. Hated ALL brands, flavors of diet drinks. Have really liked splenda, and was thrilled that you started having it in a Diet format. My friend was looking for it for a special outing and couldn't find. I can not find the 2 liter bottles, but can find a lot of the 12 packs of cans. Guess I will "clear out" stores of this item if it will no longer be available!!!

Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke has disappeared from the shelves of my local grocery stores - Ralphs and Albertsons (in Orange County, California). It has been unavailable for at least two weeks. The store manager did not have any information. Does anyone out there know what is going on?

Coca-Cola Zero and Diet Coke are almost the same, even though Coca-Cola Zero has less calories. They're both unhealthy, though, and they both cause weight gain! Plus, they won't put you in a sugar-free diet. The Aspartame also causes an increased craving for sweets! =O What's so "diet" about that?!
