Coke Zero: Confused Anyone?

Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.

Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.

So how many flavors of Coke are there now?

  • Diet Coke
  • Caffeine Free Diet Coke
  • Diet Coke Plus
  • Diet Coke with Lime
  • Diet Coke with Lemon (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Cherry Coke
  • Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (added 2006)
  • Diet Vanilla Coke (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Coke with Splenda (being discontinued)
  • Coca-Cola Zero
  • Coca-Cola C2
  • Coca-Cola Classic
  • Coca-Cola with Lime
  • Coca-Cola Blak (added 2006)
  • Cherry Coke
  • Cherry Coke Zero (added 2007)
  • Vanilla Coke
  • Caffeine Free Coca-Cola Classic

What's your poison?

UPDATE Nov 05 - Goodbye Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon (see USAToday)
UPDATE Dec 05 - Coke + coffee mix on it's way (Coca-cola Blak)
UPDATE Apr 06 - Diet Coke with Splenda is being discontinued.
UPDATE Jan 07 - Cherry Coke Zero added.
UPDATE May 07 - Diet Coke Plus added.

I used to drink regular coke for many years and switched to diet coke when it was discovered I had mild diabetes (Type 2). As we all know, diet coke tastes nothing like regular coke. Aftertastes aside (which I guarantee you will stop noticing after months of being on the stuff) it was never a good replacement for regular coke. Coke zero hit the stores in Australia only recently. I've just tried a comparison glass between diet and zero. Zero tastes like a slightly flat, non-diet REAL coke. It tastes more like normal coke than anything else I've tried so I'm giving it a go. It seems to be the closest I'll get in diet drinks to the original. I just wish I'd gotten to taste the lemon varieties of the diet drink - I never saw it anywhere, only the slightly nasty lime version which never really grabbed me. For now, I'm giving zero the thumbs up (unlike some people, I'm willing to take my chances).

I have always love regular Coke but don't drink it much due to calories. NEVER like diet Coke but drank several other kinds of diet soda. Coke Zero is WONDERFUL. Hope they keep it on the market forever! Remember folks, soda is not real healthy so moderation is important!

I'm in love with Coke Zero. I love Coke, really dislike the taste of diet, and when I tried Zero I haven't gone back to regular Coke even when I'm not doing low carbs. It's almost exactly like the real thing, in fact, I can't usually tell the difference. I really hope Coke doesn't phase out the Zero!

Coca Cola Must Be Destroyed

Artificial sweeteners have been to proved to cause depression. So that gives a 'healthy' boost to the pharmacutical industry for all those millions of people drinking the bloody stuff every day.
They also drive the prices right down so you buy BIIIG bottles rather than a small one that you would prefer.
Why couldn't they just halve the sugar in the regular coke and call this the diet one???
Coke - and the other major drinks manufacturers - also use the good old 100 e-numbers which have all been proved to be carconagenic and have been linked to causing cancer.
Don't be afraid of sugar - it's vital for your body, it's just having too much that can be bad for you.

Best advise ... drink natural spring and filtered water!

Last time I checked, too much sugar CAN kill you. have you seen diabetes kill someone? I am watching my father die a slow and painful death after a lifetime of drinking regular soda every day (a quart with every meal). He's already lost a leg, his kidneys, most of his eyesight, and 70% of his heart function to the disease. I have yet to see an obituary of someone who died of aspertame poisoning. I have been drinking diet soda for 8 years now (I am 20 lbs. lighter)and haven't experienced any of the "symptoms" of this so-called aspertame poisoning. Sure, I don't drink a ton of the stuff, but I do enjoy a diet soda at least 5 or 6 times per week. I also use aspertame in my decaf coffee and tea every morning. Let's get a grip - NOT EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET IS TRUE!

You are fooling yourself if you think you are immune
to this poison.

Just because you have not seen or felt any medical
problems in these 8 years-means nothing. The
accumulative effects are long term, and you will find
out the hard way in the years to come if you
continue.

You are playing Russian Roulette with your health.
And playing right into the hands of Coca-Cola and
Monsanto.

Hope there's treatment for you in the future-besides
tubes, catheters and ivs....

I'm really sad that you feel that way. I hope that you are immune to the problems that will occur after years of drinking aspartame. I just don't understand why anyone would want to take the chance on chemicals that a company that is making money off of and people are complaining about. Who do you trust the public or corprotations????

I am a researcher working at the UCSF Medical Center and to the best of my knowledge, there is no conclusive evidence that splenda or nutrasweet is carcinogenic. I believe there is some evidence that in massive doses the pink stuff is carcinogenic on rats, but these are doses thousands of times higher than what people would consume in their lifetime relative to their body weight.

Everyone wants to believe that the stuff is bad for you because it's "artificial". But bad for you and good for you are relative terms. For someone diabetic, compared to regular coke, coke zero is a much better alternative.

I am a coke zero fan. I love it. It tastes just like coke and it's satisfying.

Show me the actual published scientific journal articles that show that artificial sweeteners are linked to depression. It may be possible that depressed people drink more diet sodas because they are generally more overweight, or worried about their appearance. I highly doubt that artificial sweetners actually CAUSE depression.

For those of you drinking diet coke or anything with aspartame, I highly suggest you read about the dangers of aspartame and watch the movie "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World", and see this page that lists all 92 symptoms related to aspartame:
http://www.relfe.com/Aspartame_92.html

Many studies have also proven that products with aspartame actually cause you to gain weight probably due to the fact that it increases appetite.

I hope you consider your choice next tiem you go with a "diet" coke or product with aspartame, if it causes brain cancer and weight gain (the opposite of what it's advertised of doing), what's the point?

Reply
SS

It's me again, I noticed some people referred to the dangers of aspartame as "myths", those people who do not beleive the dangers of aspartame, actually everyone should watch the movie "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World", you will be amazed and shocked about the incredible health dangers related to aspartame and the corruption that allowed this sweetener to be legalized, it has been proven over and over again to cause brain tumors not only in rats but in humans, this is not a myth or urbanm legend, it is a true crime and that's why many places are in the process of banning aspartame due to it's deadly side effects and ability to cause 92 different symptoms (which account for 80% of complaints the FDA receives, yet it is still legal, while stevia, a perfectly safe natural sweetener is illegal, it's all about the money, they can't patent a natural product so they can't make a fortune off like as they can with an artificial sweetener that is patented).

Um, anyone can make a movie and say anything they want on the internet - again, it doesn't mean it's true.

As for your comments on Aspartame. I have lived with SPD
(Social panic Disorder) for about a year now. I have had to remove most of the sugar, all of the caffine and any other stimulant that can be found. When over at a friends house she had made some lemonade, So I thought that it was okay to drink. I had about a cup and all the sudden I felt my heart begin to race and a full blown panic attack set in. If anyone on this site has had a panic attack you can understand what it can be like. I got over it and asked my friend if she had made the lemonade with more sugar than usual and she replied that it had no sugar it was crystal lite. When talking to my doctor about it later(I choose a non-pharmacutical method of coping-diet, excersise and mind over matter) He mentioned to me that he had heard of people complaining that Aspartame actually made their panic attacks worse or in cases where there was no actual diagnosed disorder raised the level of the heart beat and brought on slight confusion in some people. Since that day I have not touched a sugar alternitive and I recommed that the people out there ingesting it look it up and research WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY!!!!

Tried Coke Zero in houston tonight for the first time.

I drink a lot of water with lemon wedges for the "bite" but I'm really a coke fan.

Problem is -- looks like my blood sugar is going up at 45 years old.

When it was fresh out of the bottle and really cold, it tasted great- 99% like coca cola classic. As I got down to about 1/4 of a glass and the ice started melting- it started tasting overly sweet.

I think as long as I keep it cold- I'm going to like it a lot!

Yeah. Aspartame can have negative effects. You know what? So can sugar. Obviously everyone is different, and if you are diabetic/insulin resistent.. and you have to choose between something you KNOW will make you sick (sugar) and something that has like a one thousandth of a percent chance of making you sick (artificial sweetener), you obviously should choose artificial sweeteners. Yes... there have been cases were aspartame has made people deathly ill/incapacitated.. but you run those risks with almost every product you encounter. I mean seriously.. name me a product that there has never been an adverse reaction to.. ever. Obviously it would be better for us if we drank neither sugar nor artificial sweeteners, but this is a post about SODA. So obviously, we're all picking one or the other, or we wouldn't be here. If you are drinking regular coke with sugar, be advised that the chemicals used to carbonate the water in soda are just as harmful as aspartame, and corrosive to your mouth & stomach. There is still quite the chemical slurry in non-diet sodas. Someone so freaking health conscious shouldn't be drinking carbonated beverages at all. Way to try to scare people who are trying to make better choices (calorie free/sugar free soda) for their lifestyles. Save your preaching for somewhere it'll actually hold some water, i.e. not talking about soda, which in all forms is undoubtably bad for you!

I am a coke classic addict, who was also on the verge of becoming a diabetic. Zero Coke to the rescue! I am beginning to hear bad things about it, but for me, it has saved me from becoming a diabetic (which had a lot to do with the sugar in classic, to begin with.

Zero Coke has probably saved my life - literally. Within approx. one month of switching from "real" coke to zero coke - get this! - my blood sugar level has gone from
8.3 to 5.0 Yea, for real!!! My doctor is thrilled.
Thanks Coke, for bringing out a great product. In saying that, dear Coka-Cola, keep selling the original - it's still "the real deal."

Coca-Cola Zero does taste a lot like regular Coca-Cola.

However, I prefer (and only drink) Coca-Cola sweetened with Sugar, not corn syrup like 95% of US Coca-Cola or artificial sweeteners resembling the taste of corn syrup-sweetened Coca-Cola.

Mo, the basic difference is the taste. Coke zero TASTES almost exactly like coke classic. You should definitely try it out.

Julie and Laryssa, coke isn't bad for you if you drink it in moderation (1 maybe 2 a day). Of course, if you drink 5-6 of them a day instead of water then it is bad for you, just common sense.

Try drinking juice, or (heaven forbid!) water.

Reply

Lots of juices on the market use artificial flavorings and have a ton of sugar. They are almost certainly just as bad as drinking soda. They should not be mentioned in the same breath as water.

Water is the sweet mana that feeds all life. We should all be drinking as much water as we can stomach, because we normally don't drink enough during the day. Having said that, drinking some soda is once and while is not that bad for you, just like drinking some coffee or beers once and while is not that bad for you. Moderation is the key to all of this and lets face it, most juice is not carbonated and does not have caffeine which is a major part of why people drink a soda like Coke or Coke zero.

Side note: I stumbled upon this site doing some research on Coke Zero. I normally don't drink Soda and have hardly had any soda for years, but I wanted a sweet pick me up this afternoon and so I wandered to the vending machine and decided to try coke zero. It is decidely delicious, just what I was looking for and even feels a bit less syrupy in my mouth than regular coke.

Anyway, some good posts here, good info on both sides of the issue of Aspartame. Certainly it is not a healthy product, but there are tons of unhealthy things in our daily life, including the air both inside of our homes and outside. If you drink it in moderation you will have much less chance of having a negative side effect. One can of this soda once and while is not going to make you keel over dead, that's for sure.

A balanced life is a healthy life.

To wtf: Aspartame has been proven to worsten diabetes, so it is actually as bad as sugar for diabetics, and it's not one out of 10 000 people that react to aspartame, it's 3 out of 5, they'll either get light symptoms like headaches, mood swings, depression, itches, and taken daily for a long period of time, it causes brain cancer, sudden death, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and so on, I won't list the 92 diseases it causes, just search google for "aspartame 92" and you'll see the full list.

Sugar does not cause 92 diseases and is much less bad for you than aspartame, plus anyway, it's been scientifically proven that you loose more weight using the refular soda than the diet since aspartame increases hunger which causes you to eat more and therefor gain more weight.

Anyway, many states and countries and currently in the process of banning aspartame due to it's extremely high toxicity and cancer causing and seizure inducing properties (as well as the 92 other diseases it causes).

Again, I recommend that everyone watches the movie "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World", there's also the movie "The Aspartame Conspiracy", but I haven't seen that one yet.

Just wanted to add something else: Splenda which I think is what's in coke zero is made from chlorine, which is also carcinogenic and causes heart disease (this also includes the chlorine found in tap water, which is one of the main causes of heart disease since it damages the arteries and increases cancer risk by 93%).

Reply
Spectra

Chlorine is an essential ion...it's needed by the body in certain quantities to balance charges created by potassium/sodium/hydrogen pumps. Maybe people should think twice before trying to scare the crap out of people on the internet :P

Reply
SS

The body needs milligrams of chlorine, not grams, perhaps you should read the research done on chlorinated tap water, aspartame and splenda, at least watch the Sweet Misery movie on aspartame, you will be blown away by how corrupt the FDA and drug companies are and all the frauds that were committed to get aspartame approved. It was well known before it got approved that it was extremely toxic, caused seizures and brain cancer even in small amounts, and all the research was falsified in order to get FDA approval.

Also, the people at the FDA that had to make the decision on approving it or not were offered $1000 a day jobs if they approved it, which of course they did, and that's why just 6 months after aspartame was approved and reached the market the brain cancer rate jumped 10%, the diabetes rate jumped 30% (yes, aspartame causes and worstens diabetes even though it's not sugar), and the rate of brain brain lymphoma jumped 60%, and that's only 6 months after aspartame was approved, so you can imagine how many people it killed now that it's been legal for over 20 years, that's how dangerous apspartame is, so don't try to make it look like it causes mild problems, thousands of people die from aspartame consumption every year and millions are made extremely sick for life every year. The FDA admitted that 85% of complaints they receive on food is about aspartame, and they list the 92 diseases that have been associated with aspartame consumption.

Also, the reason it may not seem like anyone is sick from aspartame is if you get MS, lupus, cancer, etc from aspartame use and go see a doctor, they'll give you the usual "it was caused by your genes" bullshit, no disease is caused by your genes, they all have a logical cause, I know, it happened to me (I beleived it for the first 5 years until I found the truth). Not to mention that if your disease is caused by aspartame, you're just given a drug that will do nothing but worsten the problem because then you're just adding a second poison instead of taking the first poison out (aspartame) which is what it making you sick and in most cases people won't realize that their disease is caused by aspartame.

People, don't take this issue lightly, this is a true mass murder/terrorist act that was commited by GD Searle/Monsanto (the aspartame manufacturer) and the FDA, don't support these people, they deserve to go to jail and be trialed as terrorists, which is what they are by definition.

Just to show you how corrupt the system is, I bet you never heard of Stevia, it's a natural plant that's up to 400 times sweeter than sugar, has zero calories, and tons of health benefits, with not a single health risk or sign of toxicity, so why wouldn't they use this in diet products? Simple: it's the same as the drug VS. natural product issue, even though the natural product works better and has no risk (prescription and non prescription drugs, when used properly, are the #4 leading cause of death, and the #1 cause of death when you add prescription errors, killing at least 784,000 people a year), since you can't patent a natural product, any company can sell it which results in competition and lower costs, but with aspartame, the manufacturer patents it because they invented it and are the only ones that can sell it at whatever price they want (although the patent expired by now). But there's more, since aspartame causes so many diseases, and it's made by a pharmaceutical company, the same company also makes the drugs to treat the diseases aspartame causes.

So the sad truth is, the makers of aspartame are making people sick and giving them cancer to then sell them drugs that they will be told for life to treat the diseases they have caused.

How can you guys support these people? What they are doing is downright criminal and must be stopped, not to mention that aspartame was proven many times to make people gain weight, so now that you know the horrifying and sad truth, I hope you stop buying aspartame products, because they do the opposite of what they're advertised as doing (they make you gain weight by increasing your appetite and being very addictive), and they're making people deathly sick.

Please, stop supporting these terrorists, the regular soda will not only cause you to loose more weight (try it before you say it's not true, many studies have proven this), but regular sugar is much much much less dangerous than aspartame.

Anyway, aspartame will be banned very shrotly, so why not stop taking it now?

Again, don't take this issue lightly, this is a very serious crime against humanity. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but the truth is scary, and we must help get this poison banned ASAP.

I'm amazed that so many peole actually LIKE Coke Zero. My daughter and I tried it hoping to, at last, have found a diet cola that tasted like regular cola (the brand is irrelevant - we like Coke, Pepsi AND RC). We were VERY disappointed - it ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT taste anywhere CLOSE to regular Coke. What is does taste like is regular DIET COKE - in other words, TOTALLY NASTY!

I just saw the post above mine about aspertame - I was drinking a flavored water product called Aqua-Cal regularly last spring. It tasted great - best flavored water on the market and was sweetened with aspertame. Then my feet and ankles started swelling so big I couldn't get my shoes on even when I got up in the morning - the only thing I could think of that I was doing differently was ingesting aspertame on a regular basis. So I Googled "negative effects of aspertame." Swelling of the extremities was one of the mildest of the side effects being reported. I stopped drinking that stuff right away - it took a couple of weeks for my feet to get back to normal - then I drank one bottle as an experiment and the swelling was back. Now I drink unflavored spring water.

I thought that Coke Zero was sweetened with Slenda or I wouldn't have even tried it. I've had no negative effects from Splenda (although I do keep my artificial sweetner consumption to a minimum)and I like the taste of most things made with Splenda.

Aspartame has been proven to cause people to gain weight (by increasing your hunger and make you crave carbs, and due to the fact that it's very addictive) and it has been shown to cause 92 diseases, so now that you know the facts, there is no reason at all for taking aspartame, because not only does it make you sick, it makes you fat (don't beleive it? switch from diet coke to regular coke and watch your weight start falling, and your health improving).

It is true that aspartame causes cancer, in lab studies some of the rats developed cancer at 1000 to 6000 mg/kg per day of aspartame. A can of diet coke has 131 mg of aspartame, so if you weigh 150lbs don't drink more then 520 cans of diet coke per day or you might get brain cancer.
The methanol in the aspartame that can cause those 92 symptoms SS mentioned above is also a concern. Aspartame is about 10% methanol, so a can of diet coke has 13 mg of methanol. Methanol is poisonous at 19 mg/kg, so a 150 lb person would have to drink about 100 cans of diet cola. Methanol breaks down quickly in the body, with a half-life of about 1.5 hours, so you have to drink those 100 cans rather fast.
To put it differently a 150 lb person would need to drink 1.3 grams of pure methanol to have any effects of methanol poisoning, this is about 1 mL, or 20 drops. A can of diet coke contains 0.01027 mL of methanol.

To SS: Grab a calculator and check it out yourself, then stop spreading urban legends.

To diet beverage drinkers around the world: Drink with moderation, no more then 520 cans per day, and don't drink 100 cans within 90 minutes.

Thank you so much for posting this! Coke Zero, in moderation (like anything else) is a great alternative to regular coke for those who are watching their calories or cannot ingest sugar. The internet "scientists" who post the evils of aspartame and splenda should put their comments in perspective when spewing their rhetoric.

Personally I am wary of artificial sweeteners. I try to limit myself to 1 can a day. I like the diet Coke with Splenda as it has that 'bite' I associate with regular Coke.

On another note I tried the new TAB energy drink and it was nasty. It smells good but the melon flavor is nasty to me.
