Coke Zero: Confused Anyone?

Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.

Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.

So how many flavors of Coke are there now?

  • Diet Coke
  • Caffeine Free Diet Coke
  • Diet Coke Plus
  • Diet Coke with Lime
  • Diet Coke with Lemon (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Cherry Coke
  • Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (added 2006)
  • Diet Vanilla Coke (phased out end of 2005)
  • Diet Coke with Splenda (being discontinued)
  • Coca-Cola Zero
  • Coca-Cola C2
  • Coca-Cola Classic
  • Coca-Cola with Lime
  • Coca-Cola Blak (added 2006)
  • Cherry Coke
  • Cherry Coke Zero (added 2007)
  • Vanilla Coke
  • Caffeine Free Coca-Cola Classic

What's your poison?

UPDATE Nov 05 - Goodbye Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon (see USAToday)
UPDATE Dec 05 - Coke + coffee mix on it's way (Coca-cola Blak)
UPDATE Apr 06 - Diet Coke with Splenda is being discontinued.
UPDATE Jan 07 - Cherry Coke Zero added.
UPDATE May 07 - Diet Coke Plus added.

Duffster, perhaps I'd be more inclinded to believe you if: 1) YOU DIDN'T TYPE ALL IN CAPS! 2)You could be more informative and less aggressive and 3) if you could spell! I believe you meant autopsies and capillaries.

And just as a passing note... Sweet 'n Low and Equal have been out for years - I don't recall them ever being taken off the market and I don't recall any mysterious deaths caused by them.

Get your bloody facts straight and re-examine just who is the "idiot" here.

Um, yeah, duffster, I have yet to read in an obituary that someone died from Sweet-n-Low or Equal poisoning. I've been drinking diet soda for about 8 years now, and I'm not suffering from brain loss. Last time I checked, I've been working in a professional capacity for a Non-Profit, and I seem to be the one reminding a forgetful boss of the deadlines that need to be met on the grants I write. And by the way, he drinks regular soda...

This is for whoever put that they like Coca-Cola Light, like they sell in Europe and Asia. The reason that they don't sell it in the US is because it is sweetened with a blend of cyclamates and aspartame.
Hope this helps!

Always been a big diet coke drinker. Prefer diet coke to diet pepsi. Was thrilled when the diet coke with splenda came out because seems like splenda might be better for you, and prefer splenda in coffee to aspartame (nutrasweet). Unfortunately, the diet coke with splenda has a worse aftertaste. Just tried Coke Zero and really like it. Tastes alot like regular coke, and much less after taste then both diet cokes. I think I may have just converted.

Duffster,
You are a complete idiot!... Do you know how many hundeds of thousands of people suffer from Diabeties?? brought on from the over use of plain sugar! Now compare that to the couple of rare cases were a Quack Doctor diagnosed a person with "Fake Sugar Syndrom". You need to drop the Urban Legends and read some FACT based material.

I am a Diabetic and I am stuck drinking diet soda or water. The new Coca-Cola Zero is the best ever! It reminds me of the truly original coke! That cola flavor that no other soda ever had, created by the sugar, instead of the corn sweetener they use in regular coke now. Coke Zero "it's the real thing!"

I like the Coke zero, it tastes fairly similar to regular Coca Cola. Diet Coke with Splenda I think tastes horrible, it doesn't really have a 'diet' taste thanks to the splenda, but it is way too sweet.

Maybe Coke zero sweetened with splenda could make a great tasting calorie free soft drink.

I just tried Coca Cola Zero today. Yech! It tastes just like the Tab of 20 years ago to me, and I was so happy to have other diet drink options. Back to Diet Vanilla, Lime, and Cherry Cokes!

I'm a lifelong hater of diet sodas. I had found that the only marginally tolerable varieties were those with some type of additional flavoring to them to mask the diet (apsertame) aftertaste such as Diet Cherry Coke / Diet Vanilla Coke / Diet Coke With Lime / Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper. And these were only tolerable when drinking with food. I tried Diet Coke with Splenda and hated it.

However, I just had my first Coca-Cola Zero today and I have to say this is the best diet soda ever. I liked it as-is without having to eat anything with it. It has very little after taste and comes closer to the taste of real coke than anything else. I even prefer it of Coke C2. Congratulations to the people at Coke for this one, it's a winner!

LOL Anyone notice the people that aren't pop drinkers are pretty bitter? Another thing if they are so against pop and diet pop why in the world are they coming to a pop related site and wasting their precious time. P.A.T.H.E.T.I.C.!!! Another thing as someone pointed out, I find it really hard to be offended by someone that can't even spell. Take awnry for example. If you are referring to yourself as meaning someone contrary in disposition it is spelled ornery bright one. Of course we all know water is better for us but thanks again for the reminder =). I myself also suffer from diabetes and for that reason have had to try (key word TRY) to cut away all pop because I just can't stand the after taste of diet pops-YUCK! I would rather drink urine lol. Anyways I just tried the coke zero and it's actually the most tolerable. I think I'm going to try switching to it. I wasn't sure exactly what it was so looked it up and came across this and me being me had to put my two cents in. I love cherry coke also so yeah, that would be nice if they would make a cherry coke zero. I never did try that c2 wonder if they will put it back on the market. Okay if anyone has anything to say feel free to email me(nicksprincess62@hotmail.com)as I don't have much time to check these things.

Just my two-pence worth...

1) I love Diet Coke
2) Lemon Diet Coke tastes so artificial - why not put some actual lemon juice in there??! (ditto with lime, but somehow that's not quite so objectionable)
2) The cheap Coca-Cola Light imported from Europe tastes VILE! (you can really taste the cheapness, that somebody in Bosnia, say, would never be able to detect!) I wish they would outlaw this practice in the UK.
3) I wish they would sell Diet Cherry Coke in the UK (does it exist at all?)
4) Diet Coke Spelenda and Coke Zero both sound interesting, but we havn't seen hide nor hair in the UK yet (today was the first time i learnt about it on here!)

Keep guzzlin'

Coke Zero is the best soda ever made by a long shot. It's only slightly below regular soda in taste and it has no calories, which makes it the ideal drink. I previously drank Diet Vanilla Pepsi because it was the closest to normal vanilla soda. I hope they start making Vanilla Coke Zero; I will be a customer. For now, I will be drinking gallons of Coca Cola Zero.

Coke Zero is awesome! I am a coke addict. Ha ha. I am so addicted to soda. I have always preferred Coke to other beverages, especially Pepsi! I used to drink at least three 20-ounces of Coca Cola sodas a day. I buy the Coke Zero (CZ) in the 8-pack 12 oz bottles since they started selling it that way (I prefer bottles to cans). I now drink at least eight 12 oz bottles a day (That's the equivalent to 8 cans of it). It costs about $3 for an 8-pack, but I don't care. I buy about 3 cases every few days at Wal-Mart and Kroger just to stock up in case they quit making it.

In reference to those who say you can't lose weight by drinking CZ, you're wrong. Why wouldn't you lose weight by cutting hundreds of calories from your diet each week-especially when it's sugar? Even if you drink one 20-oz a day, you're going to cut about 100 calories a day, or 700 calories a week.

For those of you who love it, it tastes better in bottles, compared to cans. Also, try chilling it or drinking it hot, even. It tastes different hot and cold.

Also, try Fresca-a Coca-Cola product in ugly green and yellow packaging. That's what I started drinking before I discovered CZ. It tastes just like Sprite and has no calories. Sprite Zero tastes good, too. I drank that before I found Fresca. But, Sprite Zero has a slight aftertaste, unless you chill it.

Anyway, keep buying Coke Zero so that they will keep making it!

Why Coke Zero is fizzy-
I'm sure it's because of the Splenda. I've used Splenda and when you pour it in liquid, it fizzes like Pop Rocks.

I like to drink
40% Diet Coke,
30% Coke ZERO,
20% Diet Vanilla Coke,
10% Diet Cherry Coke.
Not all mixed together of course; I just like to mix things up every once in a while.

Sara, the concept of "no calorie" coke is not a new one. Diet Coke has no calories. So it seems that a vast crowd bought their ticket to "diabetes land" a long time ago. I'm not a fan of Diet Coke with Splenda - Splenda has a weird taste and it's just gross. I can only figure that maybe those folks who say it tastes like sugar have one of the following:

1. deformed taste buds
2. no taste buds due to a severe burn, probably from hot pizza or something
3. a healthy diet that doesn't consist of a lot of sugar so they aren't really "addicted" and don't pay attention to how real sugar tastes, therefore not realizing that Splenda tastes nothing like sugar

The new Coke Zero is decent. I like it better than diet Coke because it doesn't have the bitterness of pure aspartame sweetener - it's counteracted by the acesulfame potassium (a sweetener).

Regular Coke is just bad for you. There is not a way to justify it. I cut out all carbonated beverages for one month and lost 15 pounds. Amazing, huh?

ATTN COKE ADDICT -

Coke Zero does not contain Splenda

You might be referring to the "acesulfame potassium".

I absolutely LOVE Coke Zero but can't find it in cases of 20 oz. bottles any more! Any suggestions? Was that just during the introductory, promotional time? Hope they continue to make it...

I think that the Coca Cola Light that they Produce in Europe is actually the Coke Zero over here. Coke zero has been around for a while in Europe under that different name.

Hey, I am new to Diet Coke, but I love it. Anyone heard of the Asparateme problem with diet sodas? I am concerned and would welcome anyone who can disprove this. Again, it's not a coke problem, it's an Asparateme problem. When the tempurature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees Farenheit, the wood alcohol in Asparateme turns into formaldehyde and them to formic acit, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. In the body, this mimics MS symptoms, aching limbs and such. Is this a big fat rumor? I keep cases of diet coke out until I need a new one in my fridge. It's been a hot summer, and I am concerned. I have been told to STOP drinking diet coke if I have symptoms of fibromyalgia, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision or memory loss, as these may be caused from Asparateme poisoning. ANYONE HEARD OF THIS??

I am a diet coke addict, and have the same symptoms, including sudden onset swelling. I have been trying to find more information. I've been keeping track of symptoms in correlation to the diet coke drinking, and feel much better on days I don't drink diet coke.

I've tried both Coke Zero and Coke with Splenda. They both taste nasty, too much like Diet Rite cola. I prefer Diet Coke, but I've stopped drinking it as much because of the aspartame. I like the other Diet Rite sodas...tangerine, grape, black cherry. Oh yeah, and Coca-Cola Light is awesome. It's a lot better than Diet Coke. I had it in Central America and in Ukraine and loved it.

PS...FYI, aspartame does NOT turn into methanol in the body, it breaks down into it's two component amino acids and is expelled. It's only bad for people with PKU.

I guess I can't try it then... Aspartme causes brain damage for people with my condition...

Believe it or not but Diet Coke was never supposed to taste like Coca Cola classic (Coca Cola Zero is obviously now the diet version of Classic). It's always had its own independent taste. It's something that's confused people for many many years.

To whoever invented Coca Cola Zero - thank you for saving my sanity and perhaps adding years to my lifespan as well. I have been a very loyal Cherry Coke drinker since it first came out (and Coke Classic drinker before that) and in desperation I tried Coca Cola Zero for the first time tonight and really loved the taste of it. Didn't think I could stand just drinking water alone and the diet pop I've tried in the past only made me want to gag, but Zero is really great and I'd want to drink it even if I didn't have to - though I do have to, because having been a loyal Cherry Coke drinker for so long (and Coke Classic drinker before then) has made me 82 pounds overweight and despite averaging an 800 calorie a day diet of actual food intake (thats not counting the 5-6 cans of Cherry Coke per day I did not want to give up before now) for the past several months along with hours per day of housework as exercise (I am not a couch potato), I still couldn't lose weight (and I tried very hard to because my doctor said I'm on the verge of turning diabetic if I don't); but Coca Cola Zero is going to be a lifesaver there for me, its 0 calories, 0 carbs beat the hell out of Cherry Coke's 150 calories, 42g carbs/sugar any day & it tastes great too. Thanks so much whoever invented this, I can't wait to start losing the weight and hopefully avoiding diabetes in the future thanks to Zero - it's sure made a big difference in my life discovering this wonderful drink tonight I'd like drinking even if it wasn't necessary in my case to find an alternative to Cherry Coke I could tolerate, let alone like so much anyway.

All I know about this Zero stuff is that it's got that foul tasting muck aspartame in, which no dumbarse can conclusively prove is safe. Fully agree with Duffster, although perhaps posting all in caps wasn't the best method of getting a point across. Guess you schizophrenic calorie counters will only know the truth of exactly what all these artificial sweeteners do once it's too late. I'll be here to laugh. As for that lame "how many people have diabetes thanks to sugar ?" well get a clue people : ANYTHING is bad for you if you eat too much of it. Just don't drink 20 cans of Coke a day and guess what - you really will not have too many problems !!! Think you need to quit demonising sugar like it's crack cocaine. And kindly forget all this "they wouldn't have passed it onto the market if it wasn't safe" bull. Want me to reel out a list of all the drugs that "they wouldn't have passed unless they were safe", and have since been withdrawn for any number of horrific reasons ?
Aspartame makes any drink taste like battery acid. Period.

i haven't drank non diet soda in about 5 years. And YES, i lost 70 lbs when i quit drinking regular soda. i used to drink 2 litres a day at least. i also started counting calories in all my foods and drinks. Five years later, even after having a child, i'm still thin. Every calorie counts. One of those large buckets of regular coke at the movie theatre has like 800 calories. Diet coke of the same size? About 15 calories. Yeah. That makes a HUGE difference.

i do drink plenty of water as well, at least 1.5 litres a day, with a wedge of lemon for flavour and health benifits, but i LIKE diet soda. i drink maybe three to four bottles of diet soda a week. i drink herbal teas as well. Water gets boring. Everything gives you cancer. Choose any of several thousand foods, drinks or activities that you enjoy, and i'll bet that somebody can tell you why its really, really bad for you.

i do worry about aspartame, and all other artificial sweetners, but not quite enough to stop drinking it.

Coca Cola Zero and Coca Cola Light found in Europe are the SAME EXACT THING with slightly different marketing (in Europe they can't refer to something as "diet" because that term is reserved for medicinal and pharmaceutical products.) It actually worked out perfect for me because I was in Europe winter of 2004 and was amazed by how good both Coke Light and Pepsi Light tasted that I bought 4 extra 20 oz bottles to take to the US with me, when those were quickly consumed I started looking on ebay to order some of this stuff for home but fortunately right before I was about to give in to the temptation of buying this stuff from overseas, Coke Zero came out. Only thing is, make sure you drink this stuff ICE COLD because it has a FIERCE BITE when it is served warm.
