Coke Zero: Confused Anyone?
Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.
Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.
So how many flavors of Coke are there now?
- Diet Coke
- Caffeine Free Diet Coke
- Diet Coke Plus
- Diet Coke with Lime
- Diet Coke with Lemon (phased out end of 2005)
- Diet Cherry Coke
- Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (added 2006)
- Diet Vanilla Coke (phased out end of 2005)
- Diet Coke with Splenda (being discontinued)
- Coca-Cola Zero
- Coca-Cola C2
- Coca-Cola Classic
- Coca-Cola with Lime
- Coca-Cola Blak (added 2006)
- Cherry Coke
- Cherry Coke Zero (added 2007)
- Vanilla Coke
- Caffeine Free Coca-Cola Classic
What's your poison?
UPDATE Nov 05 - Goodbye Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon (see USAToday)
UPDATE Dec 05 - Coke + coffee mix on it's way (Coca-cola Blak)
UPDATE Apr 06 - Diet Coke with Splenda is being discontinued.
UPDATE Jan 07 - Cherry Coke Zero added.
UPDATE May 07 - Diet Coke Plus added.
I am curious about the diet coke with splenda since I adore splenda, but detest diet coke. This no calorie coke sounds like a one way trip to diabetes-land though.
ReplyDiet Coke with Splenda is nasty. I am a route driver in connection with the Coke company. I don't sell Diet Coke with Splenda at ANY of my stops. Diet Coke Plus is a bomb too. The big rise in diet drinks now is Coke Zero for those who are sick of Diet coke. I am told that Coke is coming out with a Diet cherry Chocolate Vanilla Dr. Pepper but haven't seen it yet.
ReplyI'm not surprised; Dr. Pepper is a subsidiary of 7-up/Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages. Should Coke come out with such a product, subsequent suing would be inevitable. ;)
ReplyI've had the Diet cherry Chocolate Vanilla Dr. Pepper. It is absolutely disgusting.
ReplyCoca cola zero? Hmmm... I wonder what that tastes like. I never knew there was so many flavours of coke. Hehe!
LOLA
ReplyTried Coke Zero. It's sweeter, much closer to regular Coke. If you drink and like Diet Coke, don't bother, it will be much too sweet for you.
If you don't like regular Coke, might be your thing.
ReplyTried Coke Zero tonight. This is perfect,so simular in taste to a regular coke with only the slightest diet like after taste that stopped me from going with any diet drink. I am thrilled with this new one, seriously.
ReplyI too agree, that it is much sweeter like regular coke. I must have the hardcore taste of a real diet coke! That is why i can't stand diet pepsi.
Replyliked Zero? Did you bother reading what's in it? I suggest some research about these products. I am so heartbroken about what i just read on splenda=( back to sugar for me i guess.
ReplyI've hated Diet Coke all my life. I've recently tried both Coke Zero and Diet coke w/Splenda, and I found the Diet Coke with Splenda to taste a lot like Diet Coke, but sweeter.
On the other hand, I've found the Coke Zero to taste a lot more like regular Coke, which I've always liked.
So, I'll be drinking "Coke Zero" now fairly regularly instead of Diet Mountain Dew.

Coke Zero tastes like a toned-down Tab. Not kidding...you can still find Tab on some supermarket shelves. The Tab they still sell is much less "intense" then it was 20 years ago (they cut the Saccharine with Aspartame), but it still has that unforgettable Tab taste.
Coke Zero is very reminiscent of Tab. And since I like Tab, Coke Zero is great!
ReplyWhile studying in Spain and Chile, I fell in love with the European/South American "Coca Light" (which, in my opinion, tastes FAR better than regular Diet Coke). Does anyone know how I can find out which of the American varieties is most similar? I've tried them all, but I think my tastebuds are confused!
ReplyCoke 0: Pepsi 1 Final score.
ReplyI don't get why they don't market Coca-Cola "Light" here. Is there something in it that isn't FDA approved?? I can't stand Diet Coke, but Diet Coke abroad tastes almost exactly like regular Coke. I just tried Coke Zero today and it was by far more tolerable to me than any other Diet Coke product I have tried. Still had an aftertaste, but a more tolerable one.
ReplyRenee, is the light coca cola made with less sugar instead of an artificial sweetener. That would be good.
Replydiet cherry coke is where it's at
ReplyCoca-Cola Light has no sugar.
Coke Zero is very similar, but seems just a tad different.
I wish I could compare side-to-side.
But basically both CCL & CZ taste like Coke Classic w/o sugar.
ReplyI've been trying to force myself to switch to Diet sodas for over a year now, and I just don't like Diet Coke like everyone said I would. I had high hopes for Splenda Coke, but it's not much better. It really seems like with all the technology they have today, they should be able to make a 0-cal drink that tastes like Coke. Well, this is pretty close. It actually tastes good. I hope this one's here to stay.
Replydiet, sugar its all so bad for you but it all taste soo good! I love coke, spelda coke was better than diet coke, and i think coke zero is better than spleda coke, but i agree we need a diet soda that taste like the classic taste of coca cola classic!
ReplyWhy not a STEVIA coke.. its about time these large companies got on the back of the FDA and got stevia legalised... its a sham that i dont have the choice to have that natural sweetner in products i like.
Replycall your congressperson!
Someone mentioned Coke with Stevia. I don't think that would sell very well, Stevia is about as bitter if not more so than saccharin. I just don't really see stevia catching on.
Someone also said "OBTOPSIES HAVE SHOWN LARGE SECTIONS OF BRAIN TISSUE MISSING. YES, MISSING. JUST CAPULARIES FLOATING IN FLUID. THE BRAIN TISSUE EAT'N AWAY BY DIET SUGARS AND THEIR RELATED COMPOUNDS."
This person needs to learn to spell if they want to be taken even remotely seriously. Of course, no one is going to take such ridiculous statements very seriously. Diet sodas cause massive brain damage, but it's a great big cover-up, maybe they are in league with the underground soviet union, they never broke up, they just pretended to to satisfy the west. Maybe it is their secret plan to cause everyone in the west to become mildly retarded from diet sodas so that there will be little resistance when they stage Bolshevik Revolution 2 in every major country, thus ensuring worldwide Soviet dominance.
ReplyThat is my problem with conspiracy theories: they depend on tons of people keeping a secret, or several secrets, for a long time, and if you have ever told a close friend a secret, you know that it is hard for 1 person to keep a very uninteresting secret (in comparison to the ones in the conspiracy theories) for even 3 months.
Then, after the conspiracies start getting out there, they also depend on the idea that the people behind the conspiracy, who are evil people who don't blink an eye at killing several others, yet have some kind of code of honor that prevents them from killing the people who are exposing their evil conspiracy. It must be like the unwritten rule that said that all James Bond villains, rather than just killing him, had to take their time explaining the intricate way they were going to kill him, thus giving him time to escape.
ReplySugar or no sugar, I find all these products addicting, period. Maybe that's what they want?

Tried Diet Coke with Splenda - nasty ! Better than diet Coke, but too much clove-like aftertaste.
But now I've just tried Coke Zero. I LOVE IT! As a diabetic, I've been waiting for a no sugar CocaCola Classic, and this is very, very close. I've been drinking only diet sodas for years , so I'm used to artificial sweeteners. Coke Zero tastes just like Classic Coke to me.
Goodbye Pepsi One, hello Coke Zero!!!
ReplyNow that's what I'm talking about....somebody finally got it right! It taste great and what a cool package. (Where was I when Diet became ZERO?) Very cool!
ReplyAs a former regular Coke drinker and a present-day diabetic, I have longed for a beverage able to match the taste of Coca-Cola, yet without the aftertaste common among today's diet drinks.
Coke Zero is the CLOSEST thing I have found to match genuine Coca-Cola Classic, but with 0 calories, 0 carbohydrates. The drink has the unique, spicy flavor of genuine Coca-Cola, yet with almost no aftertaste. It makes Diet Coke seem like a cheap knock-off! The "master formulators" at Coca-Cola have done their job well. Diet Coke should have THIS formula!
ReplyBeen a Diet Coke drinker for ten years, but no longer! Coke Zero is much better!
ReplyI picked up a Coke zero at the grocery store the other day just thinking they changed the name of diet coke, but curiosity got the best of me. Well.... my husband laughed at me because I am in love with this stuff I swore it was not diet coke with a new name and now am relived to see I was right and not just someone scammed by a new label. So here is a question is the sprite zero a new formula too, or is it just diet sprite? I tried it awhile backa nd really liked it, but I had never really tried diet sprite before that. Anyways I think Coke zero tastes just like COke classic especially if you put it in the freezer for a bit tne drink it cold.
ReplyHey if your on a diet why not try WATER .. soda is bad for you Do you know what it does for your stomache? pour the soda in a cup and place a penny in and see what happens.. i would think if you are trying to get healthy you would not do soda...you can get really attatched to water.. nothing like a cold bottle of water when you are hot !
ReplyCoke Zero is definately better than Diet Coke.
Diet Coke is an acquired taste, and once you get accustomed to the headaches and avoid letting Diet Coke get warm, it's actually bearable.
Coke is worried about sales, whose going to buy regular Coke if they can sell a Diet version that actually taste like regular?
Coke was happy to sell a mildly palatable Diet Coke to desperate people trying to loose weight... until Pespi came along and started using Splenda to improve Diet Pepsi...
ReplyNo kidding, awnry. Water tastes way better than Coke too.
What's with all this "oh my god, the new coke tastes so much like regular coke now I'm going to lose weight!" Right... good luck with your Coke Zero diets. Make sure to keep everyone updated as the inches come melting off.
Replypour the soda in a cup and place a penny in and see what happens"

Now try not to just repeat nonsense you've heard like it's fact.
"What's with all this "oh my god, the new coke tastes so much like regular coke now I'm going to lose weight!" Right... good luck with your Coke Zero diets."
Jesus, overstate much? It's about choices. Sometimes water is perfect, sometimes a coke is. If you think that switching to a zero calorie coke from normal coke won't help with weighloss you're simply wrong.
ReplyDidn't want to use the word "Diet," huh? Genius move. It worked so well for Pepsi Free.
I'm glad that Diet Coke is now made with Splenda, but it still won't ween me from Diet Dr. Pepper.
ReplyHas anyone else noticed an abnormal amount of carbonation in Coke Zero? I was sitting at lunch yesterday when my can bubbled over - on it's own. A coworker and I are currently conducting an experiment to see if that was an isolated event.
ReplyJust tried Diet Coke with Splenda today and I like it. Definitely tastes more real than plain ol' Diet Coke. Actually, I think it tastes kind of like regular Pepsi. Weird. Still need to taste-test Coke Zero to compare.
ReplyI just noticed that my Coke Zero is just bubbling and bubbling in the can...weird. Keep up posted on your experiment.
But it is so good, I don't care! Husband and I love Coke Zero, and all of our friends who've tried it love it. I think it is much better than Diet Coke, and Diet Coke with Splenda just plain sucks (which was disappointing, because I'm a Splenda fan.)
Keep buying it...so they'll keep making it.
ReplyI give coke-zero a big fat ZERO...tastes like diet pepsi..uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh!
P.S. I did like the c2 coke but can't find it anymore :o(.....................
ReplyJust happened to come acrossed this board while surfing. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the difference between Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Coca-Cola, for their part, has not done much to remedy this.
Usually when a diet version is made of a popular soda the procedure simply involves removing sugar and replacing it with aspartame (or recently, sucralose).
However, with Diet Coke the Coca-Cola company created a whole new flavor. When presure from Pepsi threatened Coca-Cola’s share, they actually reversed the diet process. They removed aspartame, added sugar, and “New Coke”, later renamed Coke II, was created.
What this means is, Diet Coke is actually a diet version of Coke II, not Coke Classic.
Coke Zero, by contrast, is Coke with the sugar removed, and replaced with an aspartame/ace-k combination.
Also new is Diet Coke with Splenda. This is Coke II with sucralose instead of sugar.
Hope that clears up any confusion.
ReplyDoes anyone have any information on how well Coke Zero is doing? This stuff is absolutely amazing. I probablly drink close to a 12-pack a day! Does anyone know if the half liter bottles will be avalible in 6-pack?
This is a great product! Will it stay, or will Coke abandon it like they do so many other products.
ReplyYeah I also have noticed the Bubbling over I was driving my truck and looked down and saw my cupholders filled with coke zero I was angry, but since I live in a househole of diabetics Coke zero is a worthy substitute for diet coke.
Replyits time to run around the block a few times, fatties... then you could drink whatever the **** you wanted
ReplyChris-
Time to lose the attitude and maybe you would get laid once in a while you small-penis, insecure dickweed.
ReplyCheck out the definitions of coke zero and diet coke with splenda on Wikipedia.com It cleared up a lot for me. I wonder if Not explaining the difference of the two is some sort of marketing ploy of its own. Those guys at coke may be evil, but they're not dummies. Personally, I am awaiting the invention of Cherry Coke Zero. Oh Yea! Keep in mind it all has its effects: sugar, aspartame, ace-k, splenda. Though, I believe ace-K has been approved longer in both the US and Europe than splenda. I consider drinking diet soda to be like smoking (which I don't do anymore). I'm taking an unnecessary risk for the sake of pleasure.

ReplyALL YOU PEOPLE ARE INSANE. DIET POP AND ANY FAKE SUGAR IS POISON. YOU'RE ALL CAUSING MASSIVE INTERNAL DAMAGE ESPECIALLY TO YOUR BRAIN.
FOR THE PAST 30 OR 50 YEARS OR SO THEY COME OUT WITH A DIET PRODUCT AND SAY IT'S FINE. THEN PEOPLE START DIEING, AND THEY TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET. THEN A NEW AND IMPROVED DIET SUGAR COMES OUT AND THEY SAY IT'S GOOD FOR YA. THEN PEOPLE START DIEING, AND THEY TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES YOU FOOLS.
THEY HAVE BEEN WRONG 1OO% OF THE TIME, AND NOW WITH SPENDA OR WHATEVER THEY ARE RIGHT 100%. THEY HAVE BEEN WRONG 100% OF THE TIME FOR NEARLY A HALF OF A CENTURY. AND NOW THEY GOT IT 100% RIGHT? DRINK UP YOU IDIOTS!
FAKE SUGAR NEVER LEAVES YOUR BRAIN. HAVE YOU BEEN FORGETTING THINGS, DROPPING THINGS, HEAD ACHES?
ReplyOBTOPSIES HAVE SHOWN LARGE SECTIONS OF BRAIN TISSUE MISSING. YES, MISSING. JUST CAPULARIES FLOATING IN FLUID. THE BRAIN TISSUE EAT'N AWAY BY DIET SUGARS AND THEIR RELATED COMPOUNDS.
