The Subway Diet... Again
Jennifer Cooper claims she lost over 100 pounds on the Subway diet. Spurred on by Subway commercial-man Jared Fogle, Cooper embarked on a daily ritual of Subway after trying out the weight loss drug Meridia:
From August to April 2004, Cooper was a Subway-only gal. Monday through Friday the 29-year-old's lunches included a six-inch sandwich of roast beef, ham and turkey on wheat bread, plus baked potato chips or pretzels and a soda. Mayonnaise and cheese were the big no-nos, but there was no limit on vegetables.
Reading this story carefully shows that Subway didn't really have too much to do with it. Cooper was on a low-calorie very-low-fat diet - and it happens that a 6-inch Subway sandwich (minus the mayo and cheese) is quite low fat.
Kudos to Jennifer Cooper for keeping the weight off, and learning what sort of portions are appropriate for her!

I like subway. It's a good choice when my family wants to eat out, because I know there are healthy options, and everything is fresh (plus I see them put it together, spit-free. Although I guess they could spit in it beforehand...now I'm paranoid.) This is a great example of WHY there are so many weight-loss plans out there- some people really succeed!
ReplyYou call Subway eating out?
ReplyI agree that the Subway diet does work. I have lost a total of 18 pounds to date since January 1 eating only Subway. Congrats on the weight loss .. keep up the good work.
ReplyWhat is the "subway" diet?????
ReplyCharlene, it was that diet that Jared advertised. If I remember correctly, it is an apple for breakfast, a small Subway sandwich (no cheese, mayo, or oil) for lunch, dinner is same as lunch, and lots of walking to and from Subway. Not the healthiest thing in the world.
ReplyI've read this and seen, of course, Jared. He did an amazing thing as this girl did and if they're keeping it off, good for them.
I just don't see how this diet translates into an eating plan for the rest of your life.
ReplyI work at subway and I gotten fatter.
Replycassie, you must've been sneaking the cookies or something. pepperonis maybe...
Replyi worked there and didn't lose or gain weight. didn't effect me, i just got sick of the food.
sucks.
i love subway and everything ive ate there for along time and never got fat and i kno someone who works there and never got fat
ReplyI work at Subway and I've gained a little bit of weight, but that's only because my favourite sub is the chicken parm and that has the parm cheese and marinara and the chicken and everything, so I think that would do it.
Replysubway is o.k.
but Quiznos tastes better and i looked at the nutritional info and its actually healthier too
so i think i'll stick with that
Replyu r kidding rite about quiznos being better nutritionally, their small sub is only 4 inches long and 1 inch wide.
Replyoh and also this is how the diet really goes
Breakfast: Skip It!
Lunch: 6 inch Turkey Sub
Dinner: 12 inch Veggie Sub, Chips, Diet Coke
and the diet makes you lose weight through restricting calorie intake but is not healthy in the long run because you dont get all the nutrients that you would get from eating normally
Replyi love subway so i think if i had to go on a diet i would choose this one
Replyhow did you do it? omg can you please email asap...i have been very depressed lately...please email asap....thanx
ReplyHi! Please read if you're interested in information on the subway diet, I know it well!
In the third week of January 2005, I got very tired of looking at myself in the mirror, being 6' tall and according to the scales afer one long night at work, 278 pounds! That isn't totally accurate, as I was wearing my coat, several layers of clothes, boots, etc.
I'd decided enough was enough, and did something about it. On my way to work the following day, I stopped at subway, and picked up a footlong roasted chicken sub, with tons of veggies......mustard only for sauces, and made it my entire meal for the day....accompanied by about a gallon of water per day. My job at the time had me indoors and out, alternating every 2 hours. This made a nice schedule for me, and my eating. When I got there, my first two hours were inside where I would have my first 1/4 of the 12" sub. 4 hours later when I returned inside, I had the second quarter. I repeated this until my 13 hour shift was complete, went home and went to bed. Of course for the first week or two it was tough, but after that my body adjusted to it nicely....and hunger was minimal after that. One of the reasons I wanted to lose weight, was that I play in a rock band, and had a big show in my local town that draws 4500+......and a lot of the people I would know, and had not seen since I graduated highschool in 1993. The show was in the first week of June, and I hadn't started the diet until the last week of January. The results? In the beginning of June, I was down to a fit, and slim (for my build) 186 pounds! I wouldn't believe this had I not experienced it myself!
Unfortunately, I did go back to eating pretty crappy shortly after and gained a few back, but I am back on track now and going full speed to my barely missed goal of 180. The whole experience changed my life, and I had never felt better in my entire life either. Wish me luck on round two.....and if anyone has any questions, I'd be glad to help. Any doubters are welcome to email me for before and after pics as well.

ReplyDo you have before and after pictures? did you excsersise ? Im 275 how much do you think I could loose
Replyin 72 days
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE SUBWAY TOO!
ReplyI too am losing weight using Meridia. I started out at the weight of 184 lbs at 5'3 and my weigh in today I weigh 156 lbs. So I am down 28 lbs and counting. I have been on the meds for about six weeks. I eat Subway a lot with no mayo or cheese and I eat McDonald's Egg mcMuffin minus cheese in the a.m. with a yogurt that I buy in the grocery store.
ReplyWhat I don't get is why don't people just eat properly? Then you wouldn't get hungry either. I did this diet
Fruit or weetabix for breakfast
3 fruit snack in the morning or cucumber/carrot with spoon of homous
Bean soup / or other filing veggie soup
fruit for after
small handful of nuts like brazil nuts
more cucumber (if you are still hungry)
sweet potato/potato/brown rice and stew made of veggies like courgettes/tomatoes/ carrots/ beans/ peas/ broccoli etc
another fruit or small biscuit treat
and I was loosing a steady but healthy amount of weight. I only wanted to loose 7lbs and I did.
ReplyThat is not just eating healthy you are still starving yourself of valuable nutrients and it is not a "diet" you can stick to for a lifetime duration!?
Replyit worked for me, lost 70 lbs in 1 year but I modified it. I did skip breakfast, lunch and dinner are the same. Usually a 6 inch subway club, a plain bagel, and a diet can soda. The bagel is about 250 calories, but low to no fat. I would either have a roast beef, turkey breast, sweet onion terayaki, or the subway club. A light snack between might help you. Total should be less than 1500 calories a day.
Replyhey i am soooooooo proud of u jen... thanks for encouraging me, i am 21 year old and yes like u i need to lose about a 100 pounds too. i have been doing my reseach on this diet, andit sounds very fulfilling, am quite happy with it.. i am gonna start it today! and yes'll update u on my weight loss:-D
ReplyYo,Tim... Nicely done, what a inspirational story.Keep it up
ReplyI effin love subway but it gets pretty gross and i dont rele think it works it only makes people fatter then they already are!!!!!
ReplyHey Guys. I just stumbled onto this message board and I thought I comment. Researching the subway diet, I will have to agree, it can be a form of weight lost. But you guys have to realize it’s only a fast way to lose weight, its nothing long term, because remember your body needs around 1300 + to be functional. Everyone should eat a balance meal which includes breakfast lunch and dinner, also at the same time snacks in between. It may seem like a lot of food but if portion size and if food is consumed correctly it should be fine. I'm quite fit, and I've kept fit for awhile. Include some sort of workout schedule. Anyone can lost weight remember this, it only takes a bit of effort and also a bit of knowledge. Don’t look for fast weight lost plans like these, but try and build a weight lost plan which fits with your lifestyle.
ReplySorry to be such a drag, but why can't people make their sandwiches at home and take a walk after work? That's basically the same diet, and it would be a lot cheaper in the long run. Subway sandwiches aren't that good, anyway. It's like some people have no common sense.
ReplySounds like an expensive "diet" to me. I'll echo the other dude who wonders why people can't make their own sandwiches? Frankly I'd starve if all I ate in a day was basically a 12" sub. I've lost 35 lbs. eating sensibly (ie. food I make myself) and getting lots of exercise. Subway schmubway.
ReplyQuizno's is SO NOT healthy! They won't even print their nutritional information on their website or on their menu because it's as BAD as Burger King!!!! Do some research before stating incorrect facts, poo. Pretty much the only healthy thing at Quizno's is the small bourbon chicken on whole wheat without cheese or mayo.
At least a low fat 6" Subway sub is filling and satisfying! It helps me stay on track with my diet and exercise plan. I get really tired of eating vegetables and grainy foods at home all the time.
ReplyYou're all so stupid! SubWay doesnt help you lose weight. It just shows you that you don't need to have a burger that's covered in greese, just to fill you up. Anybody could make a sandwich at home, like they do at Subway. Its not hard at all. And taking a walk after you're done every meal, can help you lose weight.
So I dont know why people make such a big deal about the "Subway Diet"
ReplyAnybody could go on a diet. All this one is, is just a really expensive diet.
I know I sound like im just going on and on about things like this, but really. If you think about it, Subway is just a rip off for your money. Because anyone could make sandwiches at home, and I might add, for a whole heck-of-a-lot less then what you would pay for Subway sandwiches!
i think the subway diet is so popular because it's a simple diet. really. it tells you what to eat, & when. but if you just try to "eat healthy" you have to keep track of everything you eat. & sometimes, write it down. which gets tedious because i've done that. some of you are right, it really is just eating less, but if it works, it works. it's not for everybody. & all diets are like that. so if it works for you, yippie! my family actually owns a store & i did gain weight from eating the cookies too much, so i can understand that. but if you're saying it won't work & it's dumb, good for you. then don't do it. but that doesn't mean it won't work for other people.
ReplyGracie you are 100% correct. I lost 70 pounds eating at Subway and the beauty of it is that I don't have to think about , this many ounces or that many slices, or this and that. 2 Subs a day, PERIOD! Simple..
For the folks who are complaining that it's "too expensive", this is not the diet for you. 2 subs may cost you what, $12-$17 a day? WOW, that's REAL Expensive... LOL
Reply$12-17 a day is expensive for a lot of people. That averages out to $450.00 a month. If you have a car payment, a house payment, kids -- and now the rising cost of gas, $450.00 a month adds up. So before you become even more condescending why don't you look at the state of the economy and realize that not everyone was born with a silver spoon shoved up their ---, I mean in their mouth.
Replyhi..
first of all, i am surprised that someone said quiznos is healthier? i hope you mean without the layers of cheese and avocado.i read on a few sites, back when i was trying to calculate the calories of a quiznos veggie sub-that they refuse to put up their calorie specs because they are so unhealthy. so im curious where you found out it was healthier-please post it so ican add it to my calorie food list. thank u
i love subway and mr. sub. unfrotunately, i think it would get expensive every day spending 12 bucks for a sub. i try to make them at home but they never taste the same. ever. i dont know why, i use teh same ingredients, cut it the same way as well.
i am gong to try eating a home made sub daily one for lunch and dinner. it filsl me up for a while, and i dont get cravings for other things.
on weight watchers, one 6 inch is 6 points. veggie sub anyways.
Replysubway diet is a good idea for those wanting to lose weight ,because it is simple and yummy
but it is a basic meal plan, that is quite tedious i bet.
its very easy to make a meal plan everyone. i am just trying to help those who might read all this, and say "ew i hate subs or something" and be stuck at square one again.
what subway diet is..
no breakfast-which as a medical studet, i have to say is RIDICULOUS. i am prone to skipping breakfast, but it just slows your metabolism down, makes you all sluggish and your body starts breaking down muscle protein to get energy.
a sub for lunch /dinner.
well that is basically carbs for the bread, meat-protein, veggies.
everyone who tells you to eat right
will tell you to go along with the healthy food guidelines suggested
you can make a meal plan to get in your veg/fruit serving, get your protein in, and the amount of carbs necessary, and fat. and lose WEIGHT
be creative, see what you like, calculate the calories roughly. and figure out how to eat the rest of your meals, without going past 1400.
i recommend eating 500 less, first. 500 cals first, then what you nromally eat. if you eat 500 cals less daily, through burnng calories with exercise, or 500 calories less eating wise-you will lose 1 pound a week.
THE RASON this subway diet sounds so good, is beacuse you are eating no more than 1000 cals a day. now that is very unhealthy. trust me.
i am not crashing the subway diet. i am just saying it can be made healthier, and more to one's taste and budget.
for breakfast-eat something, however big or small. just to get your brain up and running.
when we are younger, we have to eat breakfast before school starting at 830 ... we eat lunch with class at 12, and dinner by 6. that is why children wake up on time for shcool, have time for homework, and playing. and dont crash like us adults do these days from mere few hours of work.
make sure you just eat less of what is unhealthy. make alternatives in cases.
example if you want pasta. thats fine. try a whole wheat pasta, fat free cheese ,that will greatly reduce your calories. also add a salad with barely any dressing. this will give you something to fill you up more, and you can be creative. i try to make mine look like the restaurant salads-just to feel extra good about what i am eating.
ofcourse i do not mean eat this daily. pasta isnt the greatest thing to eat always.
try and use small dishes. i use a very tiny side plate for my meals, and that way i feel sort of piggish having it overflowing with food. whereas my regualr dinner plate is doubel in size, and i feel fine having it full. its all psychological.
i HATE fruits . so be creative . throw it in a juicer, and drink it with one meal a day. throw it in your icecream or yogurt.
make these healthy guidelines. ad it will help
5 servings of fruit/veg a day. (if you add veggies to any main course -they will be a breeze to get through)
-2 servings of dairy produts
i recommend, taking a plate. now half of that plat should be vegetables. the otehr half -2/3 of it should be protein. 1/3 of it should be carbs. and one fist size should be fat.
i have been doing ww for a week now. it is very easy. i have gotten al the info for free online. everything all the tools can be found online. all you do is assign food a points value, and eat a certain amount of points daily. it is just a lot of creativity in terms of figuring out how to get your cravings in and not go over.
i love subway, and i think i will use ww points to figure out a subway meal plan.
for instance..
ww points for subway veggie 12 inch is -10 points
6 inch veggie sub for dinner will be - 5 points
and i wil eat 3 oranges for breakfast-3 points
and a cookie for my craving-2 points
Replyi hope this random long conversatoin helps
I hope medical school goes well for you!
ReplyI'm doing a report on the Subway diet and I need MORE pros and cons about why it's good/bad, besides the fact that it may be too expensive. Some people like it and some people don't but I need other specifics.
Thanks :]
ReplyIs it just me or is this statement the most retarded thing you've ever heard?
ReplyForget your Subway diet Jered's a pussy
ReplyI've just started the Subway "diet" and would like to reply to all the people asking why not just make your own sandwiches. I can't speak for anyone else, but I buy them at Subway because it tastes better, is more convenient, and believe it or not is actually cheaper than buying groceries! Seriously, I calculated it. I've been trying to eat healthy for some time now and it can get pretty expensive. I spend on average about $150 per month on groceries for only myself. That includes high-fiber granola, fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, lean meats, and fish. I was consumed with always trying to keep my calories in check and make sure I got the right proportion of foods. "Did I have my 3 servings each of fruits and veges today, what will I cook for dinner tomorrow, what should I prepare for breakfast", etc... I no longer have to worry about these things for the most part. I merely concern myself with getting a balanced breakfast and healthy snacks (usually fruits and veges) and subway takes care of lunch and dinner. :-) As for cost, I buy a $25 card every week. A footlong near my job costs about $5.99 (depending on which kind you get), plus I always get special coupons for $1 of a footlong. So $5 a day covers lunch and dinner. When I add in the cost of fresh fruit, salad, yogurt, and veges at the local grocer, I'm saving about $30 per month in grocery bills.
Here's what my "modified subway diet" looks like:
BREAKFAST (300 calories)
Protein Smoothie
--1/2 cup 100% fruit juice
--4 oz yogurt
--1/2 frozen blueberries
--1/2 scoop protein powder
--1 teaspoon fiber powder
--1 cup water
SNACK 1 (100 calories)
--1 cup black grapes
--1 tablespoon sliced almonds
--1 cup water
LUNCH (450 calories)
--6 inch roast beef sub, no cheese, light mayo, extra veges
--1 apple
--1 South Beach diet peanut butter cookie
--2 cups water
SNACK 2 (150 calories)
--4oz yogurt mixed with 1/2 scoop protein powder
--1 cup water
DINNER (500 calories)
--6 inch roast beef sub, no cheese, light mayo, extra veges
--1 homemade salad with low-cal spritzer and croutons
--1 serving of veges (either broccoli or asparagus) OR 1/2 serving shelled soy beans
--1 serving fruit
--1 South Beach diet peanut butter cookie
--2 cups water
Total Calories: 1500
So that's an easy and satisfying 1500 calories per day, a full 900 below my maintenance level.
In addition, I do some form of cardio 4 times a week and some form of weight training 3 times per week.
OK, I just want to say one more thing: This can work, but please understand that it's nothing intrinsic to the sandwiches or Subway itself. Rather, it's simply a means of portion control. For people like me, buying subways offer a convenient way to get a satisfying meal while staying under a caloric threshold. For others it may not work. Also, this eating plan will likely not work long-term for most people. Frankly the majority of people who start this will grow tired by the lack of variety. The best that you can do is use this as a starting point for a healthier lifestyle, not as a temporary solution. In other words, don't just go back to eating junk when you've grown weary of the sandwiches. Use your time on the "diet" as a way to learn portion control and good food choice habits. And for maximum results you really must exercise a least four times per week.
At the end of the day, it's about calories out versus calories in.
ReplyI eat a 6in roasted chicken sub about every other day. My issue is I gotta get off the cheese!
ReplyBest thing is just make your own whole wheat subs at home for lunch and dinner . It's probably a beat cheaper and healthier. Having said that, the Subway diet is basically a healthy diet provided one uses whole wheat, avoids mayonese or cheese, and drinks diet rather than regular drink. If one is lazy to make one's own food, the Subway diet is a heckuva lot better than nothing. If someone is inclined to try this diet, I recommend eating a light breakfast in the morning along with it, something like low fat yogut with a granola bar or banana with low fat milk and cereal. I am trying a modified version of this diet myself with fruits/vegetable for lunch with a whole wheat roll and a veggie or turkey 1 foot sub for dinner.
Replyyea ok but how does it work?
and whats the steps need to loss that much weight?
Reply
I just started the subway diet because it helps me keep track of calories. I have a very busy job and a long day and dont have time to make things at home.
I have a 300 calories bkfst of yogurt and nuts (good fat is good for you!), a 600 cal ft long subway sandwich for lunch, a 300 cal 6 inch subway for dinner. The other 400 calories is a total of a cup or so of skim milk for coffee a couple of times a day (100 cals), a piece of dark chocolate for antioxidants (100 cals), and the last 200 is kind if a fudge factor for whatever else I might nibble on (watched carefully).
My only concern is the amount of sodium because I put on water weight very easily. Therefore, I am trying to drink the "required" 8-9 cups of water/day.
And I exercise regularly.
I just started last week so I hope I am down by 10 pounds if I check back in a month and a half or so.
Good luck everyone!
ReplyPeople who are too lazy or "busy" to make a sandwich? Well, it's no wonder you're all fat. The key to losing weight is ACTIVITY. If you cannot even manage to lift your arms to make a simple sandwich (god forbid), you'll NEVER reach your goal, and even if you do, it wont last. I keep seeing all of these references to the Subway diet as being "convenient". In case you're too stupid to figure this out, the desire for convenience is what is making Americans so damned FAT. If it is too taxing on your poor wittle body to slap some meat & veggies between a couple slices of bread... how on Earth are you going to, say, run a mile or even spend 20 minutes on the stairmaster??? Being LAZY is what got you in this flabby predicament, in the first place. Get off your asses and learn to prepare your own damned food. You'll thank me later.
ReplyYou need to learn how to talk to people. I doubt anyone is going to thank you for calling them "lazy", "stupid", and "flabby", or telling them to get off their "asses." Although I do agree with the concept of what your are saying, your way of getting this message across is condescending and disrespectful.
