Drink Milk: Get Fat?
"The take-home message is that children should not be drinking milk as a means of losing weight or trying to control weight."
So says Catherine Berkey, the leader of a study that links drinking milk to weight gain in children. To add insult to injury, the study concludes that skim and 1 percent milk are worse than whole milk.
Children who drank more than three servings a day were 25 percent more likely to become overweight than those who drank two to three servings a day.
The US Food Policy blog digs deeper and points to the completely misleading statements coming out of the American Dietetic Associations web site:
Emerging research suggests that including calcium-rich milk to your weight-loss plan does more than just keep your bones healthy, it may be a key to your healthy weight-loss strategy. Studies indicate that calcium may make it easier to lose weight.
Milk has long been a staple food product for children - but in these days of vendors pushing calorie-dense food on every street corner - milk no longer has the role it once had. This latest study flies right in the face of many countries nutritional guidelines. For example, a recent nutrition conference in New Zealand recommended that children drink only "plain water and trim milk".

And all those "If you drink milk, you will lose weight" advertisments. I guess maybe one or two glasses a day would not make anyone 'fat', but water is better. Milk will only gain you more weight, if you drink like 7 glasses a day because it's calcium. Calcium will make your bones bigger... not you lighter :0)
If you are trying to lose weight, may I reccomend Weight loss for Idiots. I'm going on this diet soon, I cannot wait!
ReplyHey im looking for someone who can help me get fat can enyone help me?
Reply"Milk will only gain you more weight" - sorry, but thats absolute bullshit. Milk will gain you weight if you drink like, 20 glasses of whole milk or gold top milk per day yes, and yes, water is lower calories. But milk raises your metabolism, water doesnt, milk contains calcium protein and many other minerals and nutrients, water.. doesnt! I reccomend (and so does the food pyramid) 3-5 servings of milk/dairy per day (more if its skim or non fat) and 7-8 glasses of water a day. There u go, in simple words.
ReplyHey Jono i drank three classes of milk.... one in the mornning, one in the afternoon, and one at night. Now what do you say to that hu?
ReplyI thought it was suppose to be 2-3 servings of dairy... in total?
ReplyYou know what, I say screw this confusion. I drink a glass or two of 1% or 2% milk when I want to. I'm probably slightly calcium deficient, but I have never broken a bone, nor have I gained or lost weight because of milk. Everything in moderation; including water.
i drink milk alot and i am not fat. i am very strong though!!
