European Diet Advice: Combine Low-carb and Low-fat

The European Congress on obesity has been underway, and Reuters have been reporting what the "experts" have been saying.

Professor Astrup from Denmark recommends that combining low-fat and low-carb diets makes the best recipe for weight loss:

"Combining some of the good things from the low carb with the good things from the low fat diets seems to be satiating and also to enhance weight loss," he told the European Congress on Obesity.

The professor seems to deride all things that are "low-carb", and recommends a moderate balance:

His suggestion for the optimum diet was 25-30 percent of calories from fat, between 15-25 percent from protein in the form of lean meat and dairy products and 45-55 percent from carbohydrates consisting of fruit, vegetable, whole grains and legumes.

Sometimes the advice from the experts just makes me shake my head in wonder. Nutrition is individualistic - so why do we always get a one-size-fits-all prescription?

Low carb is very helpful and successful for some. It is terrible for others. Low fat is helpful for some, but useless for others.

Have you ever been to Denmark? Even the Danes know their food is terrible. There really are no fat people there, though. Well, except for the four months I was there. Also, they don't eat peanut butter! They eat the cores of their apples and don't peel carrots and they eat the tops! Really though, their food is nasty, they are all thin and healthy and beautiful, and they think all Americans are fat and lazy and carry hand guns.

The best thing my parents did were go on a diet with me. It's a little late as I am 21, but it helps to have other people doing the same meals.

This is very good advice. It is so hard for Americans because we LOVE junk food, drive everywhere, and snack foods are just too easy to get a hold of! When I went down to Brasil, I ate bread and cheese w/ fruit in the morning, a balanced lunch w/ vegies and fruit, a well balanced dinner w/ a little meat, and I WALKED EVERYWHERE. And I wasn't constantly snacking in between meals because I had to actually MAKE it. After three weeks, I came back w/ a fit and tan body! Man, I felt good! But, after I came back, it diminished quickly. :( I'm not overweight, but I could tone up a little. Exercise (more than 30 min a day. More like 1 hour to an hour and a half), walk when you can, throw out the snack foods, and eat balanced meals. And if you do need to snack in between meals, make sure it's fruit, veggies, or yogurt. Believe me. It works!
