Atkins Ad Gets Pulled: It's Not Healthy
A UK advertisement for the Atkins Nutritional Approach has been pulled because of a misleading statement. The ad apparently claims that the Atkins approach is a "healthier lifestyle". The British ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) ordered the ad to be pulled:
The low-carb regime also conflicts with government advice to include starchy foods as part of a balanced diet, ruled the Advertising Standards Authority. The ASA told Atkins Nutritionals Inc to drop its "healthier lifestyle" claim because it had not proved this in the information it supplied.
Instead, adverts should stick to stating where products can be bought.
It's fair enough to stop ads due to false claims - but using the claim that low-carb conflicts with government advice seems a bit too authoritarian.

The Atkins diet will forever be maligned because it was the first to go against our government food advice. There are about 100 publications using the same theory. Atkins is still the one to attack. Other than all the junk the Atkins company makes, the diet is nothing more than meat and lots of low calorie veggies. You may put some butter on them if you like. Protien and veggies are incouraged on any diet.
The reason our government and apparently the UK promotes consumption of starch as healthy food is to keep the food processing industry in business. We probably do need all those jobs, but we are still not obligated to eat as the government says. What is healthy is just a matter of opinion.
