The Cookie Diet

cookie.jpg

A "Cookie Diet" refers to a diet based on a specially crafted cookie that helps to suppress appetite.

The term "Cookie Diet" has been the subject of a legal battle between two companies that claim to own the rights to the phrase. Those companies are Smart for Life, and Dr Sanford Seigal.

UPDATE July 2007 (Dr Sanford won a preliminary injunction with regard to the Cookie Diet trademark - Smart for Life has been ordered to stop using the name Cookie Diet).

Dr. Seigal first experimented with a cookie formula in 1975. He believe that - for many people - obesity was caused by a faulty thyroid gland.

The basic idea is to consume 6 cookies per day along with a single meal at dinner time. The dinner should be high in lean protein.

Some critics claim a cookie-diet is far too low in calories and is unsustainable.

UPDATE: You can purchase the Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet on-line here.

Have been on this diet since October and have lost 50 lbs. Feel great, BP great - needed to lose so badly - was desperate. Took the first week to be able to force down the cookies but now, so easy and convenient. My doctor monitors my bp weekly and I will stay on as long as needed if stay healthy. There was nothing I had not tried, was headed for gastric bypass when found this. Maybe not for everyone but surely has helped me. I spend about $240.00 a month for doctor visit and cookies. First visit was about $250 I think - have very little food expense otherwise -

I was on the cookie diet for a couple of months and lost 23 lbs., then I hit a plateau. This was over the year-end holidays and I thought I would just pick up where I left off, but is was much harder. Then I started gaining the weight back. So I thought I would take a breather and then get back in ernest. As soon as I tried to eat normally I started binging again and I have now gained all my weight back. Should I give the cookie diet one more chance?

First is not Dr Siegel its Dr. Siegal..
He is retired. However, there other doctors at the clinic who are board certified.
They do explain the program fully and spend about an hour with you. They do tell you to exercise.
I just started this diet, because it was recommended by my doctor. It is only 800 calories however, if you do not need to lose the weight quickly, you can add some fruit and raw veggies (no dips) to the diet, adding about another 200 more calories for a total of 100.
The best tasting cookie is oatmeal. The shakes are OK.
The soup is pretty good if you want something hot.
They give you supplements (vitamins) according to your specific needs. The blood work is extensive and they check your cholesterol level.
You can also have your own doctor do the blood work.
The initial cost was $250.00 and it cover the blood work, consultation and EKG.
The cookies are $22.75 for a one week supply.
This is a much reasonable fee than the other diets I checked before deciding with my doctor's help on this one.
Physicians Weight Loss very expensive and you get nothing for the $500.00 fee. The food is tasteless and expensive. No physician was onsite only a nurse.
They use Medifast which you can purchase yourself online for much less.

NutriSystem, which my friend is on. Its pretty good, but very expensive. The food is $400.00 a month.
Jenny Craig food cost is about the same.
I will let you know in four weeks if this diet worked. I only need to lose 30 pounds to be back to my old self.

No Diet has completely worked for me except the Cookie Diet. Barbaric as it sounds, it works. I'm not into measuring and counting calories, so I struggle with regular diets. This is straightforward and simple. 6 cookies a day which contain a natural appetite suppressant and then you have a normal dinner. I pop cookies when I'm hungry and if you want a prescription you can have one too. I get weighed in once a week and buy my 7 packs of cookies at $5 each. They offer other things too like a shake or soup but I need simplicity. I just want the weight off. You should see the money I save from refraining from buying crap too. Once a month for $99 I think, you have a visit with the Doctor and they restock your vitamins and pills and it is ALL included. I have always struggled a little with my weight but could control it. Then something happened the past few years, I got tired and peaked around 190 pounds. Never in my life did I weigh this and it wasn't OK. I tried to control my eating and just could not. Nothing worked for me. I kept trying diet after diet. Long story short, I went to the Siegel Center and started the cookie diet. I started around 177 and dropped over 10 pounds in 2 weeks. I did it for 2 or 3 months and went from 177 to 155. I stopped due to a hurricane and gained a couple of pounds and decided to go right back. It took a few months but I am now 136 and TRUST ME I refuse to gain weight again. What I learned from eating 6 cookies a day and a normal dinner at night, was to make better eating decisions. By eating like this day in and day out YOU reprogram your eating habits and thought process. The longer I keep doing this, the better the chances are for me to stay this way. Best thing I ever did for myself. I'm in a size 6 now and you know what? It feels GREAT. These guys are very Thyroid problem aware too. I bought their book and realized, a different thyroid test lab test could indicate a problem. In the past I kept complaining about feeling sooo tired and my frickin hair was falling out. My primary doctor said that it sounded like it was my thyroid out of whack but he ONLY ordered the standard test. According to several others, you can have a problem with your thyroid and still have results in range. The range for normal is too wide and too broad. Results slightly off on the lower side or higher side can cause your fatigue, weight gain and hair loss and a slew of other medical problems. I had no idea. So the Doctor at the Siegel center gave me orders for these tests instead of just the regular T4 Free and TSH he also re-ordered the T4 Free, TSH and T3 Free which came back low but in range. AND he added this test - Thyroid Autoantibodies ( Thyroglobulin Antibodies, Thryoid Peroxidase Antibodies) and BOTH CAME BACK ABNORMAL indicating a problem with my thyroid. My regular Doctor was text book and did not think outside the box. He went along with ordering the tests though and was surprised. The Siegal Center gave me an Armor Thyroid prescription and guess what? After a few months, I stopped taking it because my thryoid went back to normal. My hair stopped falling out and I lost weight. I did not need to take it again the second time but that was part of the original problem. I'm very grateful to the Siegal Centers not only did I lose weight, teach myself better eating habits but they saved me from losing my hair.

I started the Cookie diet 2 weeks ago today. I have lost 17lbs. After gaining 100lbs while prgnant and only losing 60lbs in 1 year. My daughter turned 1 yesterday, I decided i needed to do something. I have tried & tried and failed so many times. I am happy to find the Cookie Diet. At this rate in a few months I will be back to pre pregnancy weight. It is all about LEARNING how to supress your hunger... Good luck to all.....PS I dont take any supplements only my OWN vitamins

I started the cookie diet 4 weeks ago. I found that I needed to be accountable so I had to commit to a program instead of doing it by myself. So far I've lost 13 pounds. I had a hard time with feeling full with the cookies at first but I realized that if I drank a full glass of water with each cookie, it carried me through. I eat one cookie about every 2 hours. I was afraid that I would be bored with the cookies but I'm not. I am still learning to listen to my body and eat only when I'm hungry, not because I'm bored. If anyone has questions, feel free to email me adl0427@yahoo.com

I've read all these entries and one thing I'm starting to notice is that it seems to work very well for women who have suffered from the unfortunate effects of menopause and weight loss. My friend just lost 45 pounds on this diet and she's in manopause exactly like me. I lost 50 pounds on WW and kept if off for 2 years after I lost it. As soon as menopause started I regained 22 pounds that I cannot lose no matter how strictly I follow my points! Please write if you have tried the 'cookie' diet and lost during menopause.

I am going for my lab work on Saturday and hopefully starting the cookie diet some time next week. I am a 23 year old mother of 2 that has really let her body go. I used to weigh 125 lbs. and am currently at 188 lbs. (ouch that really hurts!!!). Anyway I'm hoping that the cookie diet can help me lose at least 50 lbs. If you have any tips or great successful stories about the cookie diet please write back; I can use the encouragement.

PS. I'm over weight, but I'm still a babe! (I'm one of the fortunate ones!)
Thank you,

I just started the cookie diet this week. My question is what is the maintain diet like? Am I going to be stuck eating bland chicken and turkey for life? Like many of you I had trouble on WW and all the other diets I have been on. And yes I am going thru menapause and find losing weight difficult however I see a noticable difference in the way my clothes fit in just 4 days.

I started the "Cookie Diet" on June 25th at 240 lbs, and as of today, I'm at 208. I'm shooting for my college weight of 190 that I haven't come close to in over 25 yrs. It is the easiest program I have ever seen and because the cookies are made with protein & appetite suppressants, your body doesn't feel starved during the day and my small "atkins type" meal at dinner is enough to satisfy. I was worried about starving my body, but actually feel great about it. Even if 800 calories is too little, the same program could work with a larger meal, say 1,200 calories at dinner with a slower weight loss.

It's an amazingly easy program for me and I know that with regular maintenance, along with my modification in food intake (which I learned more about from the clinic), my weight will stay off.

I am so convinced that I have actually inquired about a franchise in my area. I'm a walking testimonial at this point.

I started the cookie diet today; at a 198 lbs. After a hysterectomy I just let myself go with no care whatsoever, it's now or now, no more excuses.
Wish me luck.

I started the diet 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. I lost 6 pounds the first week, 2 1/2 pounds the second week. It is really, really easy to follow. And I feel great! Last summer I "starved" myself and lost 20 pounds, my husband did not even notice. After only two days on this diet my husband said I looked different to him. He said I usually look "bloated" when I wake up and that look is gone! My clothes are already getting looser - - it is unbelievable. I am 40 years old and I have tried EVERY other diet. I tried SlimFast, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Optifast, Medifast, Weight Watchers and the list goes on. I always felt SO HUNGRY while I was dieting. These cookies make me feel full! Plus I feel completely satisfied with my dinners. I still miss real cookies, candy, etc. but it is worth giving that up to lose weight and feel good at the same time. PLUS, my insurance company reimburses me 80% for the doctor visits. Someone mentioned that they thought this was unhealthy. It may be, but so is carrying around an extra 50 pounds. I honestly believe I am/was a carb addict. I'd eat raisin bran for breakfast at 6:00 am and by 9:00 am I was starving. I truly believe these cookies are breaking my carb addiction. Sure, I hypothetically "COULD" go on a diet for free. I could weigh and measure everything and feel hungry all day. I could then get frustrated at a lack of weight loss and quit the diet OR I could continue eating these cookies. I am choosing to eat these cookies and enjoy watching the number on the scale move lower and lower. Good Luck to anyone on this diet!

To the lady that stated this diet costs $400 a month needs to go back to grade first grade to learn how to compute math~ The first consultation is around $250 ( it will be $200 if someone on the program referred you). This includes an EKG, medical history review as well as BMI and blood pressure exams. The cookies are $35per week ( keep in mind that this takes care of two of your meals per day which you probaly spend $5.00 per day on coffee or lattes). This alos includes your supplement pills that you take throughout the day to aid in making sure your body is still getting all of the nutrients that is needed to fully function. Once a month you have to pay another $100 for doctor visit as well as supplements so after your first month~ you will pay $100, plus your $35 a week for the cookies which totals: $240. This is well worth it. I have been on the program for three weeks. I had my first weigh in 10 days after I started and I lost 5.5 pounds and I have never felt better. I go again this Tuesday and I cant wait to see what the scale will come up with. I have a pair of shorts that are falling off of me~ this diet is not a fad..... it is GENIUS!!!!!

Today is my fourth day on the diet and I love it. This diet takes away your hunger and makes you feel great. There is never that bloated feeling or the starving sensation. You always have something to snack on (your cookies) and you have a filling meal at the end of the day. Yesterday I actually left two cookies; I wasn't hungry so I didn't eat them. According to my scale at home I've lost 3 lbs. in 3 days. For those of you starting the diet, drink lots of fluids. I drink a 16oz. bottle of crystal light with each cookie, at dinner and also whenever I'm thirsty.

Good luck to every one.
I’ll be writing about my progress as the days go by.

Congrats on the loss of 3 pounds! Thats a great start! I love this diet. It has been three weeks and I feel great! I lost 5.5 in the first 10 days. I go back tomorrow for my second weigh in. I am a little nervous though because I have been cheating a little and have had 4 different bbq's and parties within these last 2 weeks so even if I didnt lose a pound I will be ok~ I just know exactly what I have to do starting tomorrow. I know I didnt gain anything cause I would feel it in my jeans and they are stillloose. My friend lost 26 pound sin 6 weeks and became very confident and started eating badly. She gained 2 pounds and was devistated and she got back on track and lost 5 pounds in 10 days:0 It is soooo easy to get back on the horse after you fall:) Good luck and I will keep posting my results and look forward to seeing yours:)

I do have a bit of small advice! If you have a craving for something crunchy~ rather than eat a few potato chips, buy jars of pickles. DONT BUY THE KIND THAT IS BREAD & BUTTER. Get the brand Claussen and they are the halves. One half is only 10 calories ( like Crystal Light) and it will take away your craving for chips! It is very hard for me because I have a 5 year old daughter and a husband that can eat whatever the heck they want to and when I see them snacking~ I eat a pickle. It satisfies the need for something crunchy as well as salty and my Siegel Smart for Life Center said it was ok:)

I will kick butt for my next weigh in which is next week. I am targeted to lose about 3 pounds by next week but thats ok:)

Jennifer,

I also have a 5 year old, 1 year old and a husband that can eat up a storm. We went to the beach on Sunday and they were all eating potato chips, ham and cheese sandwiches and fruits. I was dying to eat some of what they were having but I kept my composure and ate my cookies, drank crystal light and my coke zero. At the end of the day I was so proud of myself! No matter what diet you do, if you have strong will power you will succeed. (I am turning on the will power for this diet; it's costing me a lot of money!) From past experience, once you start eating things that are not part of the diet, like pickles, it becomes a habit and it’s harder to control the snacking and cheating. Remember, on this diet you should only eat when you’re hungry, not when your craving something.

May the power of STRONG WILL be with all of you!!

PS, Congratulations Deb, keep up the great work!!

You are 100% right. I found the times I cheated only made me crave more bad food. I go back 8/14 and that will be my full month onthe program. I am kicking myself in the butt for screwing up and only losing one stinkin pound in 2 full weeks but I am bck on track now:)Keep up the will power.... this diet is too expensive to screw up!!!! I started at 165.5 pounds and am down to 159. I have another 39 to lose tillI reach my goal to be 120 for my 30th birthday which is November 12th..... Keep me posted on your progress:)

Hello... I've been reading up on the "cookie diet" and want to give it a go. I'm 20 years old, and a mother of 2 (already, hah, but I love them to pieces!!!). Obviously, being so young, weight gain is really getting me down. The girls my age are all able to wear such cute clothes, and me? I'm not... at least not anymore. I think that being a size 8 & 10 before makes me feel even worse, because I actually WAS that size before, so it's harder on me because I feel gross now. I'm 5'2 and weigh 160. I had my child 2 months ago, so I still have a little time to lose weight. Someone mentioned that 80% of insurance companies cover some expenses of this diet. Does Medicaid? Also, I live in Ohio, so does anyone know of a way to do this diet without actually living in Florida? Please respond... I'm desperate to lose weight and feel like my age again. I'm feeling cheated out of my youth, and it's depressing to see the other girls. It's also putting stress on my relationship, because I always think that my fiance is "checking out" other girls, but I know that he isn't.... it's just my own insecurity and fear. PLEASE HELP.

Do you really think that you are insecure or is it possible that he may be looking elsewhere? I know that my husband wouldnt cheat but with me being 159 pounds and 5'3.... I am insecure as well. They have a website and has a number tocall for locations. I am in Pennsylvania and there are a few here.

I just joined today. The Newton, MA location. Need to lose 50 lbs.. Have tried nearly every diet.. and feel like need something that will give me dramatic results to get me started. Am 33, 5'2 and wearing an 18/20. Not exercising right now.. Promised myself I would do this for at least a month.. but hope to follow it until the end of November.. then switch over to WW. Also plan on gradually adding exercise. One of my fears on this diet is that I will lose muscle instead of fat.. I have always been overweight.. can't remember weighing less then 173.. My goal is 144.. After I reach it.. I can consider lowering it.
How is Boston Deb doing? Any other ppl from Boston area?
Best of luck to all. - J

You will do great! I did great my first 10 days than went on vacation and blew it. Then I only ate 4 cookies a day and burned 350 doing too much cardio and that messed up my metabolism. I am back on track again and I look forward to losing again. With me messing up~ I still lost 8 pounds in a month so that wasnt as bad as I could have ended up:)

For a period of time, the "Siegal Cookie" and other similar products were available at many locations throughout the US and Canada, but unfortunately, it is now available only in South Florida at Siegal Medical Group clinics. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the press release here

I was a little tired the first few days but not extremely exhausted. Your body goes into shock just make sure that you keep up with your supplements and drink plenty of liquids and you will be fine.If you are tired for more than a few days call the center and see what they say. Just please please do not do any exercise.... thats where I messed up bigtime by burning too many calories and not taking enough in. The doc yelled at me today because I slowed down my metabolism. Stick to the 800 calories a day. I was too anxious and thought I could trick the program but I was wrong:) I need to lose another 38 to be at 120 pounds and I cant wait!!! Keep on track and you will do great!!!! Keep me posted on your loss here on the message board. My next weigh in is 2 weeks the 30th:)

Hey Ladies.................

Let's keep focused on how much fun it will be to go shopping for clothes because we want to not because we have to. I only buy an article of clothing because I have to but in a few months I will be skinny and cant wait to go shopping. I cant wait toknow what it will feel like to be able to put on a size 6 or a 4 ( heck maybe even a 2 in jeans). Thats my motivation:)
