The Cookie Diet

A "Cookie Diet" refers to a diet based on a specially crafted cookie that helps to suppress appetite.
The term "Cookie Diet" has been the subject of a legal battle between two companies that claim to own the rights to the phrase. Those companies are Smart for Life, and Dr Sanford Seigal.
UPDATE July 2007 (Dr Sanford won a preliminary injunction with regard to the Cookie Diet trademark - Smart for Life has been ordered to stop using the name Cookie Diet).
Dr. Seigal first experimented with a cookie formula in 1975. He believe that - for many people - obesity was caused by a faulty thyroid gland.
The basic idea is to consume 6 cookies per day along with a single meal at dinner time. The dinner should be high in lean protein.
Some critics claim a cookie-diet is far too low in calories and is unsustainable.
UPDATE: You can purchase the Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet on-line here.

Can I lose 25 lbs and feel satisfied?
ReplyI think this diet is very, very bad for any person. Yes, you can lose weight. But what are you losing? Water, lean muscle mass and yes some fat. Do you really think your body is made to run on 800 calories a day? No, basically you are starving your muscles. Yes, you are losing weight.. but good weight. Your body needs a certain amount of calories to function properly. Yes, if you sat home all day and did NOTHING.. 800 calories would not be so bad. But who does that? NO ONE! I am sorry but this diet is a just another fade that is going to harm alot of people. And then you are going to give them hunger-suppressing pills? And then Thyroid medication to speed up their metoblism. Can this diet really be that healthy. I would love to see a long term trail on this diet. It's a quick very unhealthy fix that needs to be looked at from a healthy standpoint!

ReplyI am on the cookie diet and I've lost 16 pounds in the first month. I don't find it that easy I do feel hungry at time but the suppresion pills work very well. Once I got into the grove I actually got full on just two cookies but you have to eat all six. So far I like it.
ReplyI know that the cookie diet is dr supervised, how much does it cost?
ReplyJust wante to know how to get started ........
ReplyOk so i have heard a lot of good things about this cookie diet thing...and i have just one question. What is the cookie diet? I know that you eat cookies when you try it. (Thus the word cookie). And i know that it works really well! I have seen some entries that people have submited. But i cannot seem to get a clear answer on this. What is it? What other foods are you allowed to eat while eating cookies? Will you have to eat extra healthy cookies? Ok so i have a lot of questions but i would like the main question to be answered. So please contact me ASAP. I plan on trying it. Thanks! Sincerley, Amanda Lynn Schenk!...:-)(My email is miss_kandy_mandy23@hotmail.com) THANKS!
ReplyI did the cookie diet a few years ago, I found it pretty easy, but only because I didn't have a lot of social situation where I had to eat out. I wasn't hungry because you can eat all the (non-starch) raw veggies you want, so I always had a bag of mixed raw veggies if I was hungry. Also, I think the cookie diet is easier than a liquid diet because with a liquid diet the last thing you want is to drink more water, but the cookies make you thirsty for water.
I lost 30 lbs in 3 months, and after the diet was over I used Weight Watchers to re-learn how to cook healthy balanced meals and not overeat.
I disagree with the person that said the cookie diet is unhealthy. Some people are so overweight that normal healthy eating and exercise doens't help them loose weight. I worked out 6 days a week for an hour a day during this diet, and have continued to do so, and I don't feel that I sacrificed health or lean muscle tissue by doing so.
The most important thing to remember with such a calorie restrictive diet is that after you reach your goal weight, you can't go back to eating the way you used to, you have to find a way to re-learn good eating habits.
Replycan these cookie be bought online, or from the seigal medical group in miami?
ReplyI would like to purchase these cookies on line
ReplyThere is a recipe some where out there that some people have hacked and perfected.....does anyone have it?
ReplyI talked to my doctor about this diet and she told me that is a good diet - but must be monitored. She told me that it would not cause problems with my high blood pressure or thyroid medication. She told me she called the company because when it first came out she was concerned for her patients. I am on the Zone Diet at this time but it is very expensive and my switch over to the cookie diet since I have found out it is a safe plan. But again my doctor even on the Zone diet 1200 cals. she wants me to come in monthly and monitor me and do blood work to be sure that I will not have any health problems.
ReplyThe cookie diet is 80% covered by most insurances. It obviously is not an unhealthy "fad" diet if insurances believe in it enough to cover it for their clients. I will be starting the diet in the beginning of April, and can't wait! I have heard so many great things about this diet. I called my insurance, and they told me that they will cover it upon recieving the Seigel doctor's diagnosis. I have tried every diet in the book, and I really am hopeful about this one. Besides, when I spoke with the woman at Seigel they informed me that this diet has been around for decades. I don't think that can be considered just a fad.
Replyhi can i really get skinny from eating cookies all day? wow who would have thought. I am a 54 year old man who weighs in the 300-pound range. ive been eating cookies for years ...looks like a can keep going
ReplyWow! This is the very definition of a FAD diet! This is an 800 calorie diet that costs $400 dollars per month average, using prefabbed blah tasting so-called “cookies”. This is no different from the old style Optifast diets - only they used “shakes” and protein bars instead of “cookies”. Nothing new here. An expensive, unhealthy waste of time, that does not help people lose weight in a healthy way, or help them keep at a healthy weight long term. People learn nothing about what it takes to have a healthy lifestyle or eating pattern. Get REAL people! (Former Fat Person)
ReplyI have recently heard on the radio about this cookie diet. It makes me very sad that people get sucked into these crazy get skinny diet schemes. It's all about the money. I have read books that have made comments if you want to get rich write a diet book. Why don't those of you who are over weight start educating your selves on eating healthy organic foods.Read books on cleanses your body and why we are all fat. It will amaze you on all the info out there. You will be discusted on how the food and drug industry wants us to be fat because it's a billion doller business. Why not bake your own wholesom organic cookies and take a whole food supplement like Juice Plus which has 17 fruits and veggies in a capsule. Everyone knows from the research that fruits and veggies help prevent sickness and disease. Then you can eat a healthy meal at supper. Do something good for your self. Put healthy stuff in your body. Don't contribute to these folks who are making billions of dollers because you are over weight. If you would like more info on Juice plus email me.slegendre4@aol.com
ReplyI just finished two months of my cookie diet and I have to say that I feel great. Thank you so much for offering a program that works. I know this may sound strange but I miss the cookies. I wanted to do something that it would be all natural without appetite suppressants and the cookie diet offered me this choice. I lost 17 pounds in two months and I am doing the maintenace now. When I arrived in the center I was dragging myself and feeling anxious and in disbelief. Now I feel good and all the anxiety and my aches and pain are gone. Thank you again Dr. Siegel for making me fell like a human being.
ReplyHow do I get started on this weight loss porgram, I heard it advertised by Mr. K on KABC Los Agneles. I tried you web site but could not get connected to your company. Please reply as sooon as possible I would like to buy yur products and start loosing weight about 25lbs
Replyis my goal.
Thank you for a prompt reply.
I started this diet on Thursday, and so far so good. The director of the center told me that yes, it is 800 calories, but most people cheat a little, so it probably ends up being closer to 1000. You can cook with a little PAM, and you can have cool whip free with your cookies, etc. It's not as bad as it sounds, and they are training you to eat when you're hungry--small meals throughout the day with a healthy dinner. Fast weight loss, slow weight loss, it doesn't matter. You have to change your lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off!
ReplyI am thinking of starting the Cookie diet. Tomorrow I have my appt. I'm just so confused because its so expensive and I don't know of anyone who has done this diet. Lots of advise is needed...
ReplyI just lost all my "baby fat" weight, and have kept it off 1 YEAR now. Listen up. You need to change your eating habits. Low carbs (low glycemic foods), low fat proteins, and healthy fats. The Cookie Diet isn't the answer, unless you learn to eat right. I'm not much for gimmicks of any kind (too smart), and needed long term eating pattern changes. I am now a size 2, pushing 50.
If need tolower your blood sugar (hunger control), and your cholesterol. In 1 year after you lose your weight with the Cookie Diet, check back with us, and I'll bet you've gained it back. Sorry guys, I think this is one of the "magic bullet" gimmick diets.
ReplyI started the cookie diet program a week ago and it is sadly just another scam. $375 for the fisrt time i was there. I was rushed and was not given a good first office visit impresion. I tried to ask questions and was told by the "doctor richard kowalki" to let the gilrs explain it!
I decided to reseach the "doctors" Dr. Siegel, Dr. Sasson Moulavi...Please visit the FL state medical licensure page. The so called doctors, do not have a valid licence in FL, only Canada. Their training has nothing to do with monitoring safely the patients.
Even the inventor "Dr. Siegal" licence is o a "retiree" status.
The way the diet works is the following:
ONE Meal a day! Only limited veg and proteins, no good carbs.(which tranlate to massive headache all day.)
They also tell you NOT to excercise ????
Then you get bored of eating THEIR SPECIAL cookies all day, for as long (months)as you are on the loose weight portion of thier program. They also have for extra $$$$ shakes, and soups. Which tastes horrible.
I am not traing to say what you should or not in regards to the "diet." Just keep in mind why your last diet diet failed and what it will happend once you get off thier cookie diet?
Please people lets use the internet for what is was mean to be A GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION. I wish i had more info before wasting money i didn't have.
I know plan to educate myself and loose the 60 lbs i need in order to be healty.
;-)
ReplyMy name is Doug and I am short, bald and yes . . . fat. I have tried a lot of diets, but so far this is great. For me it is especially hard becuase I eat more than almost any person I have ever met. I actually eat butter from the tub and drink alchohol like water. Oh, I smoke ciggarettes and .... .
I do feel ok and can almost see my toes and my trainer says I do really good girl pushups (yes I am a man).
Look forward to other's ideas.
ReplyDoug from WEston
My name is Jason and I'm on the cookie diet not to lose weight, but I am slightly deformed. My body is like jello. I am hopeful that if I lose 20-30 pounds, i'll be able to see bones and possibly my belly button. If I lose more weight, than I'm going to make love to my wife singing "You're Beautiful"............Thats my dream!! Wish me luck!!!
ReplyThis Jason From Davie sounds like he doesn't have any bones. Has anyone actually seen or felt one. Reminds me of a 1 celled Ameba. And for your information Jason, I don't sing "You're Beautiful" because we have it in stereo inside our bed pillows.
ReplyDoug
This is Mark from Davie too. Can you eat Bananas on this diet?
ReplyI would first like to point out that everyone around me is fat, not just me. also, i am eating weight watchers and Atkins at the same time and it seems to be working. i am not on this fad diet. i am doing my own program. Call me if you have any questions. 561-487-4491. PS. Doug does good girl pushups and can braid hair better than the Jamaicans.
ReplyDoes anyone have any cookies to sell?
ReplyI started the cookie diet on May 2nd which brings me to a bit less then 3 weeks. I have lost about 15 lbs and I am thrilled. At first I had hard time due to taste, but the oatmeal cookies taste pretty good once you heat them for 15 seconds and have tea or water. Good luck to everyone!!!
ReplyHey everyone I joined this diet 4 days ago and have lost 9 lbs already. I am not sure what to think but I have been desperate. I guess when you get to a certain point you try anything I don't think most diets are right or wrong I think you just try what is right for you and if it works great if not you keep trying until you find something until it works for you the thing is not to give up. This diet is expensive I wish it was more afordable. I am trying to do moderate exercise every other day so to get myself in traing for when I go off of the cookies so hopefully I do not go back to my old eating habits. I have a lot of pressure from my family and husband to lose my weight because I gained weight in nursing school and they all want me to lose it in fact they mention it every day so wish me luck as
ReplyI will wish all of you luck in whatever diet you may be trying please don't quit!!
Well, I posted last year and now have proof that this diet is not for everyone. I know atleast 4 people that have been on this diet and came off of it with good results but gained all the weight back and then some. Eatting a calorie restricted diet is the best way to go. But not to the extremes. For long lasting results you need Synergy. Synergy is a healthy diet, weight training and moderate cardio. Calories are fuel and you need to make your body a calorie burning machine. If you want free fitness information please feel free to write me and I will email you information. If you live in the Delray, Boca, Boynton Beach areas of Florida.. please get in touch and I will sit down with you and help you make a healthly plan for losing weight correctly. Stop the FAD diets. Most of your initial weight loss is water weight and then you lose precious muscle on a calorie restricted diet like the cookie diet. The more lean mass you have the faster your metoblism. Get with a healthy program! Fitnesstrainerrr@yahoo.com
ReplyI just started this cookie diet 4 days ago and so far I love it.. I lost 4 pounds.. When I am hungry in the day I munch on celery and some of there dips or sauces..
ReplyThey let you taste EVERYTHING and give you the greatest ideas to do to stay creative which in turn keeps you on the diet and enjoying it.. They have caramel, marshmallow, fudge Sugar Free sauces to dip the cookies in.. All kinds of stuff you can buy at the grocery store to.
Try it..
OK, Fern, we get it.
ReplyThe cookie diet is great if you are discplined. My mother and sister have been very sucessful with the cookie diet. They were able to lose their targeted weight. Now they maintain the weight loss by excercising and well balanced diet.
If you get bored with the cookies, then try substituting the cookies for soup or shakes.
ReplyI would like to know if there is a center in Orange County California?
ReplyHow do I start this diet?
I am going today for the complete blood work and checkup. I have been on WW since January and only lost 17.5 pounds in 13 weeks and continued with the pgm for another 13 weeks and have lost 0 pounds. I just tried the Duke University Rice Diet and didn't lose either. I know all the facts and tricks and aids to eat right, but I need someone that can figure out what will work for me, because WW does not. I still have 20-22 lbs to lose yet and am frustrated. I want a pgm that will work. I should be able to maintain using WW. Again, I vow to take action when the 2-4 lbs creep back on. Getting old sucks! Will post my results in a few weeks.
ReplyTina,
I tried WW 3 times and it never worked. I bought the Sonoma book yesterday & will give it a try. I also work out diligently at least 3 times a week and have a personal trainer. I'm in my early 50's and have struggled since the onset of menopause a few years ago. I'm looking for something that I can stick with for the long haul. Hope I have good results in Wave 1 otherwise I am apt to quit. Most doctors don't try to understand when a person eats right and exercises and still has a weight issue. I was told by one to TAPE my mouth shut! I was going to try the Rice Diet but you said it didn't work for you. Let's post again in a few weeks to see how it's going.
ReplyIt's not true that a low calorie diet is unhealthy. Our culture has just so super-sized our food that we don't know what normal calorie intake is. My doctor just put me on a 1,000 calorie a day diet (but keep in mind that I'm a woman. I don't know what he'd recommend for a man.) But you don't need expensive appetite supressors. You just need to know that being a little hungry all the time, even after meals, is perfectly normal and helps keep you alert and awake. And there are ways of dealing with it that are less expensive than these cookies: chewing sugarless gum, drinking water (or crystal light or koolaid with splenda instead of suger) between meals or before bedtime will help keep hunger at bay. No snacking unless you have blood sugar problems. And you just need to get used to being a bit hungry all the time, which is much easier to do when you realize it's a GOOD thing. There's nothing wrong with you if you feel hungry all the time- you're supposed to. The average American portion size is TWICE what it should be. A serving of steak is NOT 10 oz, it's 4 oz, which is the size of a deck of cards. If you eat out, you need to ask for a to go box and put half away to eat the next day. I know all this because my doctor told me, and I'm so glad he did. I starting feeling much more energetic just in a couple of days because I wasn't overeating anymore. And I don't have to feel guilty when I eat one oreo cookie after having a lighter than usual lunch. Another benefit - food tastes better when you have to wait for it! If you are worried about whether it's healthy, talk to your doctor.
Replywell hey guys i started this diet like a few days ago and i have put on 5 kgs this diet sux!!!!!!!!!!!!i excersie now and eat little healthy meals to get rid of this yuck fat any way dont try this diet it will not work ay.............
ReplyI just completed 4 weeks on the Siegel Cookie Diet. At 61 years old, I thought losing weight was over for me. My weight had climbed to 167 and none of my clothes fit me any more. (Since I went through menopause, my body seems to have a mind of its own--I never weighed more than 135. Not so any more!) I was going to move to the "next" size clothes and told myself I wasn't going there. My blood pressure was off the charts and my cholesterol too. At this point in time I am down 15 pounds and I am off my blood pressure medicine--with the blood pressure holding below normal. I have a high profile, very busy job in the corporate world. This diet is so-o-o convenient for me and I've never been hungry. It is just nothing short of amazing! My energy levels have stayed up, I'm not tired and because I've seen results--I am pumped to keep on, keepin' on. Get a buddy (I have one at work who is on the program with me) and give it a try. You will be surprised how the fat melts away.
