The Reverse Diet Solution
Tricia Cunningham's weight loss method of eating meals in reverse has created quite a stir. So much that Tricia has even begun writing her own book: The Reverse Diet Solution.
A number of weight loss diets call for a tapering of carbohydrates during the day (i.e. eat most carbohydrate in the morning, and the least at night). Many people go even further to say that we shouldn't eat after 7pm.
Does Tricia's regime taper carbohydrates in the opposite way?
Is it that the body likes to have changes in order to break plateaus? Does the diet help because people eat more protein in the mornings (most people tend to eat very carb-heavy breakfasts - sugary cereals, toast, milk, fruit, etc)?
Here are some answers:
Don't Eat:
Salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
Do Eat:
All vegetables, fresh and frozen, including potatoes
Extra virgin olive oil (the darker, the better)
All seafood, chicken and turkey
All berries, peaches, pineapple, apples, grapes and plums
Eggs
Lemons
White cheese
Fat-free sour cream, salad dressing and skim milk
Low-sodium margarine
GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC
All spices, excluding salt, read your labels!
Post Shredded Wheat and Bran
Uncooked Old Fashion Oatmeal
Orange juice
Red meat and pasta, in moderation and small portions
Tips:
Eat a BIG breakfast.
If you don't normally eat breakfast, take tonight's dinner and put it in the refrigerator and have your breakfast for dinner. This will jump-start your metabolism so fast, you'll be running to the scale!
Never skip breakfast.
Don't overeat. Save leftovers for snacks.
Eat a medium lunch and small dinner. You do not need to fill up at the end of the day.
Use water, margarine, olive oil or orange juice when preparing meat.
Drink two glasses of hot lemon water per day.
Drink when you're thirsty. Don't force eight to 10 glasses of water per day.
Eat when you're hungry
Tricia Cunningham also enjoys loads of tofu and eats 3-4 servings per day. See Tricia's complete shopping list here.
UPDATE: Tricia's website can be found here.
UPDATE 2: It looks like Tricia's diet should be laid to rest as another fad - at least according to the experience of people in this group.
UPDATE 3: Reverse Diet book has been released.
Thanks for the news Ella. I think this blog will help with the diet. Does anyone know if yogurt is allowed?
ReplyOh, and, Congratulations! Keep up the great work!

Hi Ron,
How are your weight loss efforts at the present time? I am wondering why you would not contact me personally with your questions. If I have a client who may not be experiencing the results they are looking for I generally ask these specific questions:
What was your daily menu for three to five days prior?
What time do you wake up?
What time do you eat your first meal of the day?
What time do you go to bed?
What time do you eat your last meal?
What meal was your largest?
Are you taking medications?
Do you have any specific medical conditions?
Did you gain your doctor's approval prior to starting the plan?
What is your height and present weight?
What is your goal weight?
With these and other questions, I would be able to determine suggestions that will help you achieve your goals.
As for the bad breath-you can compare that with sweat from exercising...Yes, it is not pleasant, but neither is the unhealthy weight! There were tips given to alliviate them. Parsley, beno, time, ect.
I hope you are doing well and always know the support you need is available in my support group or private email
Best wishes,
Tricia Cunningham
ReplyMy present weight loss efforts are great so much that I could have ever expected on Reverse Diet. I am following a lot of advice from the Biggest Loser routine online and Book. I would really enjoy having either Bob or Jillian on my side like the TV reality people. The Biggest Loser is so much better for me and my lifestyle. Those two are real life coaches and have the knowledge, training to back them up.
Why didn't I call you Tricia? That is very simple after my wife and I read posts from your suppossed Aunt and the other personalites you assumed in the group, which was really you in all the log in names, and your finger pointing at people in the GMA group we honestly didn't have a good feeling about you or the way you treated indivuals in the support group. Although you claim not to have spouted nasty language at the group or at people we read the support posts and you very well did. Your grammar was poor in your posts and we found it very hard to believe you are who you say you are.
I do not have any Bad breath on the Biggest Loser way of eating!!! I do not compare Bad Breath to sweating. I would brush my teeth, gargle and still would have sink coming off my body from the reverse diet!
For those of you who haven't watched, or tried the Biggest Loser way of eating this is a Healthy Eating plan, sensible and you can lose weight and not Stink with Bad Breath, Gas and enjoy yourself with the plan!
ReplyAnnie, I eat yogurt everyday but not the sugar sweet kind. I eat the kind with splenda.
SIX POUNDS with only four days on The Reverse Diet. To tell you the truth I can hardly believe it myself. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.\
Ron, I wish you had had better luck with this diet. I personally am finding it easy. My best friend lost 93lbs on weight watchers and I lost nothing so every diet is not for everyone but I feel as though there might be personal issues with tricia you are dealing with. I wish that I had a way to contact her personally. I would pick her brain. If she is offering you a way to contact her personally I don't know why you are not taking advantage of it. No matter what you think of her diet the woman lost 172lbs and speaking with someone who has that kind of perspective can only enlighten and ecourage.
Thanks,
ReplyElla
Hey Ella,
I have no personal issues with anyone. I'm only stating my thoughts and opinions and what happened to me while I was in the group on the diet.
I am finding great hope and encourgagement from the Biggest Losers group! Professional, educated, well mannered and helpful. Whatever we all choose to do to lose unwanted pounds more power to you!
Ron
ReplyThanks for the info. Ella. Wow. Good for you! SIX POUNDS! That is wonderful. I'm only on my second day. And, I don't dare weigh myself. I have 20 lbs. to lose. Hope it doesn't take long. :)
ReplyHi everyone. This is the end of my second day and I am telling you, it is easy eating this way. The only hard part is making great suppers for my family and I eat a salad. My salads are amazing though and I do let myself take a small bite from their dinner. It really isn't so bad because I will get to eat it at breakfast. I am looking forward to seeing results on the scale
ReplyI just finished reading First mag and will start the reverse diet tomorrow. I weigh close to 300 pounds and am only 26 years old. I have no idea how I got to this point. I feel so lazy and tired all the time. I feel so sick of trying to diet but I feel sicker when I see myself naked. I'm really going to try and stay strong and put forth an honest effort. wish me luck.
ReplyOk I'm here because I read the Reverse Diet article in First Magazine, and was doing some investigation. I am 24 years old, 5' 5" and 290 lbs. I've been overweight most of my life usually hovering just above or below 200 and then I sky rocketed during my first pregnancy this last year.
I really want to loose weight so I'm checking out some ideas.
I was absolutely shocked at the anamosity some people are showing towards those who created and who are trying the Reverse Diet. If you don't like the diet or the people who began it, get over it. No one is forcing anyone to do anything here. It's supposed to be helpful and constructive. If it is not the thing for you then don't do it. But all this lashing out is a bit out of hand. I feel sorry for the people who may have had their feelings hurt and I hope it didn't cause anyone to give up on any form of healthy lifestyle changes.
I hope you all find the paths that will lead you to happy healthy lives, just don't scrutinize those who do not walk with you.
ReplyI just got finished reading First Magazine and am so excited to start the reverse diet. It really makes sense that by eating your biggest meal for breakfast that you would burn off those calories thru the day rather than just sleeping with them in your stomach all night.
ReplyI have about 50 lbs to shed. I am a 56 yr. old grandma who just retired and I want to be here to enjoy my grandkids for a long time...I said enjoy and that means running, skipping and jumping with them.
I think it is sad that people have trashed this woman for letting us know how she lost so much weight. If I loose my 50 lbs, you can sure believe I will be telling everyone that I know how I finally achieved success.
Wish me luck.....I am starting this TODAY!
I too just read First Magazine and will be starting this reverse diet soon. It sounds like it is something I can truly stick with.
ReplyI am trying to lose the 40 lbs that have stuck around since my son was born and that was 15 years ago! Good luck to you Sherry and good luck to all who are changing their lives for the better!

ReplyHello to all,
Saturday marked one week on the diet and I lost eight pounds. I am loving this. I have noticed that by having a big breakfast I am not even that hungry the rest of the day. Yesterday I actually had to remind myself to eat something.
by the way I am fourty yrs old and haven't been able to lose this much weight in one week since my twenties.
Ella
ReplyHi,
I don't know how somebody can assert that someone else has been logging onto websites under fake names. How can that be proved? It seems like some people seek attention by throwing out a lot of negativity. It seems malicious and selfish to try to keep other people from having hope. If a person's doctor okays a diet, then that should be enough to make it worth a try if it seems likely to fit with their lifestyle. I did something similar to the reverse diet in the past and found it quite helpful prior to marrying someone who works very late and wants to eat huge meals in the evening. I would appreciate any tips anyone has for overcoming this obstacle. Thanks (by the way, I'm not Tricia Cunningham!)
ReplyI would personally like to thank Tricia for sharing her story and giving everyone hope and encouragement through her own accomplishment. I see absolutely nothing unhealthy with her diet plan. In fact I see a lot of good nutrition being offered in loading up on veggies and lean protein. What's wrong with that? I think there are many of us who already follows a reverse diet plan, and I give Tricia a lot of credit for spending the last six years trying to help others to succeed where she herself did. As for myself I follow my own reverse diet plan that is somewhat like Tricia's. I eat the biggest meal for breakfast, medium lunch, and light dinner. The only difference is I mostly pick foods from the low GI food group and I've learned how to combined the high GI foods to create a lower GI meal. Many of the meal plans Tricia talks about seems to be pretty close to my own healthy diet. As for the bad breath, passing gas, and becoming ill... The body builds up toxins over years of abuse. When a person starts to eat healthy it pushes the toxins from the body. So it is to be expected to have bad breath, even an odor coming from the body, and feeling ill for the first two weeks. It is even possible to have your face or body break out in a rash. That is the toxins being released from your body and is actually a very good sign, and a complement to Tricia's diet. Lemon water will help push it out and after a few weeks any discomfort will pass. As for myself I work at a health club promoting good health. I came here because a clinet asked me about it and I promised to look into it for her. After reading the article in First and doing my own research on the diet I will encourage my client to try it with an open mind as she continues her exercise program. Not every person is the same and what works for one may not work for another but there is nothing wrong with trying. Faliure only comes when you stop trying. There are many people out there who need help and encouragement and I applaud those who share their stories and offer their own precious time to help others. GOOD JOB TRICIA!!!! AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
Replydown 10lbs in just a week and a half.
ella
ReplyHi, I am new to posting but have been actively following this thread. I am 36 and need to lose about 80 pounds. I too am starting the reverse diet. I have researched this diet after reading about it in First and it seems healthy and sensible. As for Tricia Cunningham, anyone that will go to such lengths to help others lose wieght for FREE should not be bashed but applauded and I think she must be a wonderful person. If the diet is not for you then just politely go on to another one that is but there is no need to put someone down that is honestly just trying to help. There is nothing strange or unhealthy about this approach and believe me I have tried 'em all. Anyway, I wish everyone luck and wellness no matter what they are trying to lose weight. Oh and BTW I am NOT Tricia Cunningham either, LOL.
ReplyThe Reverse Diet didn't work for me. The bad breath, the gas and the tedious of cooking in the AM before work was more than I could do.
There has got to be a better way to lose weight than this.
ReplyMotivation plus...I have just read all your posts, and I want to wish you all luck with this program. Along my journey I have been most successful maintaining a positive attitude. DO NOT put yourself down. It crushes you before you even take the first step. If we think we can walk on the moon - - we CAN. I am going to try and utilize the tips here. I tend to stay focused when I write things down on paper. So..today being my first day with this plan, I have done just that. I have read many times an important key is to keep a journal.
ReplyHere's to US...
I have just begun the Reverse Diet as well. So far so good. I'm down a couple pounds in as many days. It is very sensible and has not been difficult to follow. Having such a small light meal in the evenings leaves me more time to walk, workout or just relax. I have close to 90 pounds to loose, am turning 50 (yikes!) the end of this month and have Type 2 Diabetes. The foods on this plan are precisely what my doctor wants me to eat. (Not the OJ and cereal thing, though. Blech!!) I think I will try light soy milk.
Anyway, good luck to us all and all the nay-sayers and bashers just need to get a life. If this is not your cup of tea just go get another cup and leave the rest of us alone.
Bonnie
ReplyBonnie, thanks for sharing, I too developed Type 2 Diabetes :( and just turned 53.
ReplyI look forward to checking in and see how we all are doing. Happy reverse dieting :)
Hi,
ReplyI just read the magazine First yesterday, and also all of the comments here. As far as I am concerned I will try this. But I find if I eat breakfast I usually feel hungry before noon. If I have nothing i don't remember to eat until 2;00pm and I believe that is alot of my problem but anyway this morning at 7:00am I had stirfry with turkey, veggies and by 11;00am I was hungry again but anyway will try this and yes i have tried many other diets and paid a alot and no results so will try I have 50 pounds to lose. I agree if a person doesn't like the diet don't do it but don't bash is either.
Lucille
I would have liked to read about the what the reverse fad people had to say about this diet, but it's a private group and I was, for whatever reason, rejected by the moderators.
It makes it harder to respect the opinions of the diet fad group.
Rose
ReplyMaryrose,
I believe the group is about contribution and helping one another, and not there for lurkers. You were probably viewed as a lurker. I know I was rejected and then got in. The reason you gave for joining was for lurking?
Ronnie
ReplyThis is the first day my husband and I have started this diet. I need to loose about 30 pounds and I hope it works. It does sound logical and originally we are from India where it is a way of life to have a big breakfast, medium lunch and a small dinner. After being in the states for 28 years we had completely changed ourselves to the American customs. At this point in time after reading the article on the reverse diet I realized that that's how it's always been back home. So, here we are back to square one trying to do what we have always known inside our hearts. I just hope it's not too late for us and we would loose the weight.
ReplyShelly
I have been reading all the posting on the Reverse Diet. I agreed with the comments about "fad" diets.....and all the myths. However, the information I have seen and learned from research, the Reverse Diet might just be a good program...for me anyways. I have been on Weight Watchers, and yes it is a good program. However, with 2 teenage boys and a daughter in college, I just don't have the extra money for Weight Watchers. I have Crohn's disease and when I don't eat after 7:00 p.m., I dont have as many any flare ups. Also, when I eat a big breakfast, I do seem to have more energy. So, with all that being said, I am going to give this diet a try unless there is someone out there that wants to knock sense into me....and while your at it....please knock the extra 30 pounds off me!!!!.
ReplyHey Ella,
How you doing on the Reverse Diet? Any luck? You haven't posted in over 10 days. You still on the diet?
Ron
ReplyI am 63 yrs old and 272lbs, so I am very excited about the reverse diet, maybe this will be my magic bullet, lol. Could you use your skim milk and splenda with your oatmeal and shredded wheat? If it is all allowed why not, and just drink you oj, just wondering.
Wendy
ReplyI too read this about a week or so ago and started this diet with the South Beach concept, just ate the biggest meal in the a.m. I have to say that even though I did not do all that great thru the Halloween week PMS also that I am still down 4lbs hmmm wonder what would happen if I stick to it? I have told a girlfriend about it and she is down 12lbs in about a week!!Yeah Lisa! Anyway I think even though this is hard to get used to eating larger in the morning this may work for me. My mom always tried to tell me about how our family ate its biggest meal of the day at noon and none of them were heavy I will probably not go for the tofu and the cereal with oj but the concept is good and I agree with everyone on not being hungry at night and that is my worst time of the day. Even after taking my kids trick or treating I had no desire to share the goodies lol. I did get off track over the weekend so here I go again. Best of luck to all that try it
ReplyJessica
I have just finished reading everyones' input and I'm a little unsure of the diet. I'm only 24 and gave birth a year and half ago. Since then, I haven't been able to lose any weight. I'm only 5'1 and 195. I've been so depressed about it that I just eat more. I have tried just about every diet there was and nothing has worked for me including the diet pills. I also walk on a treadmill everyday which is making a difference. I am starting this diet tomorrow and am looking forward to hopefully getting down to a normal weight. I am wanting to lost about 75lbs. I wanted to know from those who have had success on this diet about exercise meal recipes. I have to admitt that I don't have a lot of energy now and would like to know if this helps with that as well.
ReplyRebecca
I have just started the reverse diet (day 5) so far I have lost 4 pounds. The first couple of days were hard to eat such a big meal, but now I wake up ready to eat and by dinner I'm not nearly so hungry. My schedule is a little crazy and I tend to eat late at night 9:00 pm or later, so I know thats what put the exta 25 pounds on. So this should definitely help me.
Two easy tips: #1 I'm not much of morning person so I bought a slew of frozen entrees (healthy - low fat- etc). Three to five minutes and I've got a healthy breakfast. #2 If you're thinking of cheating at dinner or you're eating out just weigh yourself first. It really will effect you choices.
ReplyHi Everyone,
ReplyI just finished reading all the comments on this page and am going to start diet tommorrow. I am excited about starting, will keep tou all posted on my results.
Happy Monday monring everyone.
ReplyNo new weight loss to report. That's my fault though, my daughter is in from college and all weekend it was take her out to eat and run run run. Still I didn't gain any weight. It just seems like anything I eat after 7:oo pm stays on the scale.
Hi
ReplyJust wanted to say that everyone is entitled to their opinion, not all diets work for everyone...if it didn't work for you, so be it... don't dispell a possible means for someone else! If someone truly believes that they will benefit... let them decide. This diet as mentioned is a way of living...not used just to lose weight. Most fad diets only have one or two food groups included, this one has several of the essential foods included and gives people an opition to pick from. GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO TRY AND WILL TRY!!! You decide what's best for you!
Does anyone know when the book is coming out? I hope soon! I plan to start this diet the Monday after Thanksgiving and enlisting my husband too! He's well over 350 lbs and I have 65 lbs to shed myself. We really need this to work!
ReplyI love to read the success stories so please keep them coming. I know it inspires a lot of people including me.
God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Jennifer
I just found out about your diet, I have a lot of weight to drop. It only makes sense to me that your main meal should be in the morning, since we are suppose to use food for fuel through the day.
ReplyI also read most of the diet bashing posts. People can be so bold when you can't see their face.
Hello Sunshines,
I am always so enlightened to see such inspiration among all of you. You are truly a wonderful group. RDS has really come a long way since the GMA story. A ton of hard work, dedication, and love behind the program.
I had no idea , in the begining, how quickly RDS would become a named brand.
I get so excited every morning when I come to work and read the awesome results everyone is ejoying. I have incorporated The Sunshine Club as a way of encouragement and accountabilty to the program and yourself.
If members stick with the program each week and show a loss during the Monday weigh ins, the member will email me their results. I in turn, compile the lists and post them on the site. When a member's name appears 4 weks in a row, they will recieve 5 exclusive recipes that are not posted.
ReplyHope to see you there, keep shining you stars. (BTW...this is Tricia Cunningham)
I have just read all the posting and i think that i would like to start the deit. i just have some questions first:
Reply1: can i eat breakfast food in the morning. i don't think that i can eat fish or turkey in the morning. but i could eat a bolw of ceral and eggs.
2: do you have to eat what is on the meun or can i make my own healthy meals.
if you have an anwers to either question please let me know.
elle i was hoping to see you post soon, can't wait to see if you lose any more weight. thank you all for you time and share what you have learned. good luck with you weight lose.
