The school's canteen still had to provide some high-appeal, less nutritious foods to avoid running at a loss, he said.
The New Zealand based Agencies for Nutrition Action (ANA) sets some strong standards for fluid consumption in children:
Encouraging children to drink plain water and trim milk.Offering limited (one per day) or no fruit juices. If given occasionally, they should be watered down by at least one in three.
Offering limited (one per day) or non-flavoured milk. If given, it should be thinned with half trim milk to decrease sugar and fat and to increase calcium content.
Offering limited (one per day) or no flavoured water. "It's important not to encourage a taste for always having a flavoured drink."
Offering limited (less than one per week) or no soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and fruit drinks. All contain large amounts of sugar, energy and some contain significant amounts of caffeine.
A big ask.
