We Love Junk Food More Thank Ever

monsterburger.jpg
If you ever thought that fast food was getting healthier - think again. The menus may be looking better, but we love junk food more than ever. The fastest growning food category of 2004 was fried chicken (according to NPD Research via USAToday).

In fact, a number of fast food outlets are happily upping their portions and boldly touting their junky new fare. Burger King offered it's huge breakfast sandwich, Hardees has the 1420 calorie Monster Thick Burger. Even KFC wants to be called Kentucky Fried Chicken again. Or what about Pizza Hut?

Pizza Hut got even cheesier. The new triple-cheese 3Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza is such a hit that it took in 20% of the chain's business within four days of introduction, says Tom James, marketing chief. The chain sells roughly one lower-calorie Fit N' Delicious pizza for every 100 pan pizzas, he estimates.

The healthy options are there - but we don't want them. Simple as that. The statistical evidence backs up my anecdotal evidence. When looking at these results, one must give kudos to outlets like McDonald's - who continue to pursue healthy options - even though the consumer really wants a big greasy burger...

The Statistics
According to NPD research these were the Top 10 most popular foods consumed in restaurants by men and women last year:

Men
1) Hamburger
2) French fries
3) Pizza
4) Breakfast sandwich
5) Side salad
6) Eggs
7) Doughnuts
8) Hash browns
9) Chinese food
10) Main salad

Women
1) French fries
2) Hamburger
3) Pizza
4) Side salad
5) Chicken sandwich
6) Breakfast sandwich
7) Main salad
8) Chinese food
9) Chicken nuggets or strips
10) Rice

Apart from the fast foods, as the name implies, it is eaten FAST and unconciously. This is (IMHO) a Major, Major issue in the world today. This is what I like to term as 'Background Eating'.

Background eating could be an essential flaw in your quest for a perfect weight.

Caution: rant ahead:

While seeking for that perfect body which is advertised so abundantly by the media, we may be forgetting a vital element which will aid our digestion immensely. On my forum I encounter many people who have asked me what background eating really is. Well, here it is:

Background eating is eating or drinking while:

- Driving a car
- Watching TV
- Listening to loud music
- Walking
- Riding a bike
- Working (behind your desk or anywhere else)
- Dressing your kids
- Talking on the phone
- Talking to anyone
- Thinking about anything else BUT the meal or snack you are taking.
- Etc, etc, etc.

Foreground eating is eating or drinking while:

- Fully focusing on what you are about to put in your mouth.
- Examining the texture and flavor of the food or drink in your mouth.
- Eating with your eyes closed if you will.

One of the basics of Zen is that you focus on one thing at the time at any given time and direct 100% of your attention to the action you are taking at this very moment. How true this is for eating as well. You will find that once you start incorporating the habit of foreground consumption, you will discover that your digestion will improve considerably.

HOT TIP: If you find yourself struggling to 'foreground' your meals for lack of focus, try this: After you have taken a mouthful of food or beverage, Close your eyes while processing. Open your eyes again when you've swallowed and your mouth is empty. You'll be surprised how this will improve your awareness!

All the best!
John Hiller.

Hi janemorris here.Fast foods or junk foods can be healthy foods but taking these in a proper quantity is helpful for body.
Fast foods can be part of a healthy weight-loss program with a little bit of know-how. Choose salads and grilled foods instead of fried foods, which are high in fat and calories. Use high-fat, high-calorie toppings, like full-fat mayonnaise and salad dressings only in small amounts.
Eating fried fast food or other high-fat foods like chocolate once in a while as a special treat is fine--but try to split an order with a friend or order a small portion. In small amounts, these foods can still be part of a healthy eating plan.
