Kids, TV Watching, and Obesity

A study in the British Medical Journal has concluded that 3 year olds who watch TV for more than 8 hours per week are at a higher risk of obesity. However, this is just one small part of a larger set of results. The TV watching indicates the sedentary life patterns that start when children are very young.

These are the other key factors identified in the research:

- Birth weight
- Parental obesity
- Over eight hours of TV a week at age three
- Short sleep duration - less than 10.5 hours per night at age three
- Size in early life - measured at eight and 18 months
- Rapid weight gain in the first year of life
- Rapid catch-up growth up to two years of age
- Early development of body fatness in pre-school years - before the age at which body fat should be increasing.

I just turned 15 years old im 145 pounds 5-8 and ive been taking creatine. I am able to max out on bench press with 220. Power clean 170. Squat 405. Im the starting running back for my varcity football. If u want to bulk up and build muscle start taking creatine. There is one side effect from creatine and that is dehydration. Creatine takes water into the muscles to build them faster and to give u a "pump" that makes your muscles look alot bigger while your worker out. Makes the veins come shooting out of your arms. Creatine has turned my body into pure muscle i have huge pecks for a 15 year old 145. I suggets anyone wanting to become bigger is to take creatine.

Well, Watching TV, if done right, is not as bad as you think.

Some game developers are developing more video games that require body movement. Just like the iPods have a good side: I have a hunch that video game developers will finally start to develop video games that requires massive body movement. However, the iPod is a good thing to have. I used the iPod as a jogging assistant, so that I can listen to my favorite tunes. To protect my hearing, I bought a noise blocking headphone and also edited the MP3 files I ripped from my CDs, so that it can create more of a pleasent learning experience as I am jogging.

Losing weight does not have to bust your wallet. Last year, I had a poor diet rich in subs and processed foods, and cakes. Now, my diet is rich in fruits and vegtables and fish, as well as some chicken and even some beef. However, I am still having craving problems of too much cereal and still eating a sandwich for lunch, although the content between the bread was basically spinach leaves, tomatos, pickles, eggplants, mushrooms, and sometimes, red peppers. I have two oranges a day and nuts during my work hours, and basically, if my parents decides to cook unhealthy or orders out from places that don't have anything healthy or tasty, I order out fish and vegtables from firefly's (The fish is foiled salmon with squash and unions). However, the flaws on my diet is a big bowl of cereal for breakfast and an afterwork food craving. These bowls are whole grain cereals, too. Can I believe it? Whole grain addictions? It's no wander why the USDA is so corrupt these days. But anyways, I can jog for an hour or more, an aiming for 90 to 120 minutes of exercise after work, and my next step is to cut the grain addiction habbits. Lost 85 pounds, and have not spent a single penny on weight watchers (Boy these points system is just plain awful), and the Atkins diet (Boy, they don't tell you a d___mn thing about trans fat dangers or how bad grains really are.

I do eat chocolate, but the chocolates I buy is organic dark chocolate, not milk chocolate like these so-called three musketters, hearshy's milk chocolate, or snickers. There is something called Cocoavia, but I believe the chocolate thing I purchase is better because Cocoavia is not organic, and the way we are agraculturing our foods is unhealthy to the planet.

But what these people need to cut down is fried foods, grains, processed foods, and added sugars, sugar alcohals, and artificial sweetners. Go on the organic paleo diet.

matt i have been lifting for many years and lifting with your back is the only thing thats stoping you to grow a few more inches so when doing a power clean or squatting use your legs not your back and you will still grow at a normal rate.

Some pretty good numbers you guys. At 12 or 13 years of age, I would take it easy. I recommend focusing on the technique rather than numbers. You are still growing; lifting heavy weight at this age can lead to unpleasant injuries.

yo i jsut turnedd 15 bout 2 months ago and i bench 245.. my whole workout is mainly aimed to increase my bench press...taking CREATINE gave me HUGE STRENGTH gains but didnt do to much for my wiehgt... but if your thinking about trying it ide definetly recomend it because it makes you way stronger and it did make me gain about 5 pounds...for me it had no side affects,, i didnt even drink that much water and nothing happend. but i do have one quesiton that someone out there might be able to awwnser? does the type of creatine you take matter.. such as prolabe creatine monohydrate or something like celltech with sugar and other products mixxed witht eh creatine.... is there a HGUE diference?

Im 13 and I have a question for every body, Im going to start weight lifting and I was wondering if while I'm weight lifting would it be a good idea to spend 3 days in a row weight lifting and spent the other four days recovering and working on the rest of my body like my abbs and leg muscles or should I space my weight lifting a day apart and just train the rest of my body every day but more vigorisly on the days that im recovering from weight lifting.

Franklin

First off I'm 15 years old. I'm not gonna post how much I lift because my parents are holding back my progress by a lot. I've done some research on this stuff though. Weight training DOES NOT STUNT YOUR GROWTH! Whoever tells you that is lying to you, and if you listen to your body and use proper form you shouldn't end up with any terrible injuries.

finally, tanman you're idea is terrible. Over-training like that actually slows down your gains. Excersise on every other day and you might see better results.

Hey my name is Steve and im 19 yrs old. I rep 205, not sure of the max bcuz im trieng to lose wieght and concentrate more on reps . I have been running 2 miles 6 days a week and lifting 5 days a week concentrating on shoulders, arms, back, chest, and legs. I run first for about 20 mins(2 miles) and then work out whatever muscle I have for that day. My work outs have been very tiring and hard and I feel like I might pass out sometimes. Still I'm gaining weight! I can't believe it, but im taking creatine. Does anyone think maybe the creatine is causing me to gain the weight?( I have been increasing in strength) Its pissing me off to still be gaining wieght

Reply
Franklin

well what kind of weight? because if its muscle i wouldnt complain. if its fat then maybe you should use heavier weights as well as more reps

Reply
steve

I think I'm gaining muscle wieght. I'm having stomach cramps and feel almost constipated or something is at least wrong with my bowels. I also drink tons of water but still seem to always be dehydrated. Maybe its the creatine or maybe is the fact that I drink 2 or 3 vault's a day. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the info

If there's any question that boils my blood, it's "How much do you bench?"

First of all, the numbers don't matter, unless you're entering powerlifting competitions. There have been powerlifters in the past who squatted over 1000 pounds but didn't have big legs. Plus, you can cheat a surprising amount of weight if you sacrifice good form. If you're using good form, 20 pound dumbbells should be plenty enough to make you hurt in your curls, even if you're "curling" 155.

Second, don't use bench presses. It's a poor exercise, unless you're looking to work your anterior deltoids and triceps. I would be humiliated if I were caught doing benches at my gym.

If you're doing this to look good and not to win powerlifting competitions, then you have to look at your proportions. Your arm circumference should be 252% of your wrist, and your calf and neck should be about the same as your arm. Your chest and waist should developed in relation to your hips, and your thighs should be developed in proportion to your knees. Every lift you perform in the gym should be to correct some imbalance in your body.

hey im 14 and the size of a 12 year old:
5ft 3
100 pounds
i want to start doing upper body weights for basketball but i don't want to mess up my muscles or anything
is it too early to start lifting?

Reply
Ryan

No, it is not too early. Actually, it's not your muscles but your bones you should be worrying about. You don't want to go after the heaviest weight you can lift. Most people, when they start lifting weights, pick the heaviest weight they can lift by cheating. You see the worst form ever when people do this. This is what'll screw you up. Actually, some people who have been training for a while still do this; they just never learned.

For every lift you do, even simple ones, read up on the proper form. Follow this form to the letter, even if it means selecting a smaller weight. People may make fun of you for selecting 5 or 10 pound dumbbells for bicep curls, but just remember they have a back injury heading their way. The bicep curl Vince Gironda taught will make a sissy out of a big lifter with 20 pound dumbbells.

Each rep you do should take 1-2 seconds to lift up the weight (do it as fast as you can while holding proper form) and 4 seconds to lower (let it go down slowly and under control). This trains both your fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscles.

Once you've mastered proper form and tempo, pick a weight that you can do between 6 and 12 proper reps of. Every workout you do, write down how many reps you can do with the weight. If the number of reps hits 12, you may be ready to move up to the next weight. However, if you can't do 6 reps of the next weight, keep training on the lower one until you can.

Each workout, you should either squeeze out one more rep than you did last time or move up to the next weight. If this isn't happening, you're working out too often and you need to rest longer between workouts. It's that simple.

Remember, proper form is the very most important thing for you (an advanced lifter may use "controlled cheating" to squeeze some extra growth out, but you're far from this point). After that, it's proper tempo. Progressing to higher weights is least important. Don't let your ego lead you to an injury. There, I've probably saved you 5 years of error right there.

i have 1 more ?:
i was thinking about taking a protein shake too
should i?
after or before lifting?

Reply
Ryan

Yes. Right after your workout, your body can absorb the most nutrients. Take some whey protein (some say up to 25% of how much protein you'd eat in the rest of the day) and 50-100 g of fast-acting sugars, like in juice. This will speed up your recovery.
