How many times is that statement made?
eDiets has an interesting Q&A on the subject. A 14 year old girl is obsessed with wanting that "flat stomach" that every woman "seems" to have. The answer is great:
So what to do? PLEASE understand that flat stomachs are not the norm. It's simply how magazines airbrush the models to make them appear as though their stomach is completely flat. You have organs inside your body and unless your genetics are such, a flat tummy (no matter how fit you are) may just not be in the stars for you.
The magazines preach and preach. The women in them are androgenous - flat angles and bones. Don't believe the hype.

We actually learnt in art class that flat stomachs go exactly against the natural anatomy. It's not so much the organs being round as the drastic convex curve of the lower spine (which sits roughly to the centre of teh body at this point) along with the tilting of the hips curving the entire lower torso. You'd have to have your spine remodelled to get around that.

Replyi see lots of people in my clinics who have flat stomachs, and they are more attractive. I dunno what you guys want to say to make yourselves feel better, but really - those girls will always get my attention first.

Replyi used to be overweight and obese from the ages of 12-18. i always collected Victoria's Secret catalouges and cut out pictures of the models with beautiful perfect flat stomachs and taped them to my dresser mirror, thinking that was what i wanted more then anything in the world, a beautiful, perfect flat stomach of my own, but instead i had an ugly big flabby gut.
ReplyThen, when i was 18, i went on a serious diet and lost 80 lbs and was suddenly thin and beautiful and happy. i had the perfectly flat stomach that i always wanted :) i kept the weight off for two years, and then i got pregnant and had a baby. After i had my baby, i lost all the weight again and i'm even thinner now then i was before i was pregnant, but my stomach sticks out a little at the bottom, even though i've done 500 crunches a day for over a year. i KNOW it isnt fat, because i'm technically 10 lbs underweight. My stomach muscles have been stretched and weakened by pregnancy. :( i dont know what to do, i miss my perfect flat stomach :(
all my life ive had a perfect flat stomach naturaully but about a year ago things changed and i have this bump in it i h8 it it looks like im preggers help me!
ReplyThere is nothing you can physically do to get a flat stomach, if there is fat there it will come off when you lose weight. If there is a little bulge from pregnancy or other things you have to work the muscles around it also to get it nice and flat again.

ReplyHaving a flat stomach does go against basic anatomy as someone previously pointed out, it is possible to have one (to some degree). I've had a flat stomach one and off since I was about 10. I used to be really into gymnastics and training a lot, I was put on a very strict diet, and I gradually picked up bad habits from older girls about food behaviours. It's been five years developed into full blown eating disorders now. Having a flat stomach, working out and dieting are fine in moderation. Just don't let it control your life. Sorry, I didn't mean this to some off as a lecture, but you (the author of this little thread/article thing) reminded me of myself and my eternal goal of the 'perfect body'.
ReplyI'm sweet sixteen and I DON'T have a flat stomach... but I'm happy. I would like one but... I'm too lazy. Honestly, I think having confidence and being happy with the way you are is more attractive to guys.

I have a flat stomach and I mean flat stomach right until you look at the part around my belly button it has this sort of swell well fat I guess but I don't know it really like just around the button. ReplyMaybe some of you younger girls should concentrate on learning how to spell instead of how flat your tummies are. One tip-stop eating the junk food in front of the tv/computer, do your homework to help with that spelling, and be the little girls that you are instead of worrying so much about your appearance. You'll have plenty of time for that when your older.

Replyeveryone in my family is skinny, and has a modle-like body. and not just on one side of my family, both sides. i am the only one who is fat, and deffinatly WITHOUT the perfect flat stomach. no one even has to workout or go on diets in my family, they are just natrualy skinny with perfect bodies. i dont think im supposed to be his size. Replyi, like 'why me' am a whale in a sea of fish in my famliy, and i just dont understand why. my mom has been extreamly skinny all of her life, just like everyone else in my entire family on both sides. everyone is really pretty and has the perfect body without dieting, training or anything like that. some of the people in my family has even taken vitamins to help them GAIN weight. i am the total opposite of this. i have huge legs, and arms, and a really fat stomach. i have stretch marks on my side and down to the back of my knees. this is a problem for me because it is making me hate myself and i have even gotten to the point of depression, which resulted in cutting. and now i have even thought about making myself throw up everything i eat, even though i know everything it can do to you. i am just so desprete to have a nicer body, it doesnt even have to be 'perfect', i just want to be able to shop in almost any store i walk into that doesnt say big and tall. i am the same size as my friend who just had a baby. what is wrong with my body?! please help!
ReplyI am 16, 122 pounds and 5'8 my stomach for the most part is flat. I lost 15 pounds since school ended i was 137 pounds and getting chubby but the only thing i have to work on is the bottom of my stomach which with a bit of walking, good eating habits and some strength training i can do it. and if any of you want some help email me since i am going to be a nutritionist and i will try and help you get that flat tummie, its really easy to get actually, no more rolls for me! i almost have my 6 pack. love you all.

ReplyGuys, guys, you need to relax. A flat stomach (or lack thereof) is NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!! If you have one, great. If you don't, it's okay too.
Excluding what our *lovely* friend Spaceman Spiff said up there, really, very few people notice your stomach except other girls. Really. We're way more critical of ourselves and each other than boys are.
And there's not a miracle diet that will make you suddenly skinny. And honestly, doing more than 60 situps a day doesn't actually *do* anything, just makes your stomach hurt. If you want a flat stomach, go do some cardio. Find a buddy and go for a run. But do it because you want to be healthy, not because you want to have a "model perfect stomach".
I know this is hard and I'm sure it sounds kind of patronizing. I know how it feels to be insecure. My cousin used to be a model, and my sister's got a stereotypical "perfect" body. Believe me, I can get pretty damn critical of myself. But after a while, you need to realize that you want your body to be nice for *you*, not for the a**holes who want you to starve yourself. When all the guys out there have Orlando Bloom bodies, maybe I'll start looking into a super-flat stomach. >_>

ReplyI'm 13 and i have always been "thin". But when i was 8 i started to put on loads of weight and used to dress in size 12 clothes. I hated life, and people say that being thin is'nt what it's cracked up to be....but believe me, it is. Being "Fat" is unbearable for me, and i had anoth of looking at rolls and my fat stomach. So luckly i did something about it at the right time - as i was going through pubety - everyone gets taller and looses their "puppy fat" , and at the same time i cut out all crisps ,choclate, sweets, cake, biscuts, cakes - everyhting that is very bad. It was great! Now i sit hear ,with a size 8 figure and im chuffed to bits, i have never been so happy. I did have a flat stomach but i came off holiday so now it points out abit at the bottem. But hey - don't stress, just eat 3 meals aday , no fizzy (that is a definat NO NO don't drink coke it's like drinking pure acid , and it bloats you!!!!) instead drink loads of water - you will feel SO much better for it, trust me!And to exersizes like jogging on the spot 1 hour after eating for about 10 minuts non stop, and higher abb crunches, lower abb crunches , and for legs-sqauts. Buy yourself an exersize mat and a DVD for workout. I promise you , you will fill better for it.

the best way to slim your hips and to get a flat stomach is cardio+strengthtraining+eatingproperly..
ReplyI come from a VERY fit family..and for some reason I wasn't as active as my 50 year old parents who are in amazing shape! so in order to change that i started running..which is the best activity to do, it burns the most calories and it slims down your hips plus it is free to do, almost anytime and anywhere. All you need to do is commit to 4-5 times a week of 15-45 minutes of running! Now I personally LOVE FOOD!So I found eating healthier was the big challenge. At first make simple changes ie skim milk vs whole..or brown and enriched bread vs.white bread etc etc! Now if you want to lose weight find your daily caloric intake and subtract it by 500..just by cutting 500 calories from your meals a day for a week you will lose a pound! now if you think 500 calories is too dramatic..then cut 250, and make sure you burn 250 from exercise! Remember you dont want to lose more then 1-2 pounds a week..you need to be patient, as this is whats works best! Now for weight training, i find it best to be in a place where i am motivated by other people, so i take a cardio kickboxing class..that actually involves cardio(given), weight training and stretching! its fabulous..and you can burn over 600 calories in ONE hour-- and its inexpensive..45 dollars a month for classes 4-6 times a week! Even though i started out trying to lose weight and get toned(which i did!), i find now that im more energetic, have better posture, and even have a different attitude towards life! its craazy but i love it! Its about time that I(16 year old girl) is as fit as my 50 year old parents!! anyways hopes this helps..just remember starvation diets, and eating disorders ARE NOT THE WAY TO GO! proper diet and exercise..its really that simple!

Your young..eat up, have fun, and dont stress..im 18 years old..and even i am not as obsessed about my weight as these younger girls are! Its actually a very sad thing, when girls just out of double digits worry about weightloss, and dieting! there is definately something wrong with our society!

ReplySometimes it seems like having a perfect body would be the greatest thing in the world. Everbody has this pressure, but for all of you who aren't happy with yourself, let me explain something to you. First of all, flat stomachs aren't everything. In fact, most of the guys I know prefer curves over stick straight bodies. Second of all, being healthy is much more important. Not all models are this way, but some take their bodies to the extreme in weight loss. Let me tell you, there is nothing even remotely attractive about looking like you just escaped from a nazi starvation camp. Also, you should never go below 15% body fat. There have been women who did lose so much of their fat that they stopped menstration, and eventually could not have children. Around in the 20 to 25% area is normal, and it varies for each person. But there is nothing wrong with being in shape either. Situps and crunches are good but if you don't have a cardio program, you'll just have muscle under the fat. For all of you who are 13 and below. Please Please Please do not worry about looking pretty for the boys. Boys at your age are not mature enough for a relationship and anyone older than you who is willing to date you at your age is a big creep. Not because you're not cute and pretty, but because he knows that he'll be able to take advantage of you if he wants to. Please trust me and stay away from them. You probably don't even need a workout program, just spend every day outside running around instead of lying on the couch and you'll be fine. I want you to just enjoy being carefree, there will be plenty of time for boy-stuff later on. For everyone else, every guy I ever met who was truly worth spending time with, cared more about personality than anything else.

That is true! The other day while I was leafing through a fashion magazine, my boyfriend looked over my shoulder and said "What is wrong with these models? They look like spiders, not like women. I don't find that attractive at all."

And my family is all losing wieght except me and I look at these magazines alot and I see woman who are in there 30's and are almost my wieght and there not models there mothers! and I want to be a cheerleader when I grow up but I tryed out and the said I had to lose wieght wich meant I was to fat. I have athsma and I have to take 3 prescriptions but mostley my inhaler. And I am really stressed and everyone just thinks I eat to much wich I do sometimes and I really don't workout becase I am big. And my brother calls me a cow I really need to lose wieght my doctor says if I don't I could be at risk for diabitas if I don't get at least to 85 pounds thats 35 pounds or less pounds I have to lose !!!!!!

I am sorry, but the number of comments posed here are overwhelming.
I will tell of the "flat stomach wanna bes" that I used to be like you, actually I am still like you. Until recently...
In high school I seriously thought I was the fattest girl in school. I was 5'6" and 130lbs. All I saw the mid section of my body and I blew it out of proportion. I ended my senior year at 150lbs because of the yo-yo diets. I was sick and tired all of the time.
That was three years ago. I didnt think I had a distorted picture of myself until the day before my wedding. I managed to go from 145lbs to 125 in one month. I almost spent the day before my wedding in the hospital. I attempted a fast and I managed to flush my system of needed nutrients. I was incrediably week and dizzy so much that I fell three times trying to sit in a chair, one of the times grabbing onto the stair railing to keep myself from falling down the stairs. I had only done this fast for one day, but one day was enough. I lost a total of 10 pounds in 24 hours. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF!
ReplyAlthough now I am around 140, I have accepted some things. That if I do want to try for a more fit body (I said fit, not underweight or skinny), I need to do it correctly by changing my diet and exercising regularly, not going to any extremes. I have acheived close to flat abs, but I see those people on TV and realize that they are the extreme side. Those people are hiring $200 trainers and nutritionists and professional chefs. Most look so frail that I am surprised that they havent broken something.
To those who are trying to acheive the flat abs of the stars I give you my advice. Exercise (20-40min. max) three times a weeks with weight regimes two times (not consecutive) days. Cut out the soda and desserts and watch your portions. You mid section will be the very last place you will lose weight. Also, stay away from the gimmick products. Do it on your own with a good diet. Also get plenty of sleep. THis plan takes longer, but in the end you will have the acheivement of being able to lose weight with out compromising your health.
And honestly, if you think you are the fattest person in the world, your not. If you are pre puberty, dont do radical diets, just eat right. And if you are in puberty, your body is burning through everything you eat, make sure that you are not only eating right, but getting enough calories. I knew of people who stunted their growth because they werent eating enough while in puberty.
I want a flat stomic but I also don't want to be a pencil.

ReplyGeez, get lives, people. Most of you "I want a flat tummy!" whiners are preteens/teenagers. You should be worrying about what colleges you want to go to, not how flat your stomach is! Look, I won't lie, I have a great stomach but it's not perfectly FLAT, because my muscles are there. I have a feminine six-pack-looking abdomen and I got it that way by working out and eating enough fiber and drinking plenty of water. Honestly, that's all I do. Having a flat stomach doesn't make my husband love me any more or less than if my stomach were round. It's what makes people unique. I mean, yeah, I love my tummy but I really don't like my legs because I think they're short. But I don't whine about it because I can't change them any more...get the idea?
