The French Get Fat
There are at least two books on American shelves that boldly claim that French women don't get fat. One is the book by that name (French Women Don't Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano. The other is the newly released The French Diet: The Secrets of Why French Women Don't Get Fat, by Michael Montignac.
However this piece in Time Magazine shows that all is not as it seems:
A recent book by politician Jean-Marie Le Guen, Obesity: A New French Illness, notes that women in France, like women everywhere else, do get fat because they have less time to shop for fresh produce and are wolfing down more processed foods.
It seems that the growth rate of obesity in France parallels that of the US 10 years ago. However there is an immediate response from the government to address the issue.
- Ban vending machines in schools.
- New school curriculum on eating well and in moderation.
"The trick is never to tell the children no," says program director Agnès Lommez. "Kids can and should eat chips, just not every day.

I so agree. I was brought up with strict rules about what was allowed and when. For instance, no chocolate spread or sprinkles on bread on week days, only in the weekend. Chips were exclussively for the weekends and fizzy drinks, not more than what? a glass a day?
ReplyThough we were allowed to eat as much healthy food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) as we wanted. Non of us - me and my siblings have now weight problems.
I was reading an article talking about french women don't get fat....that is completely ...well have you ever seen a fat french woman?...

Yes, Antonio. There are fat women in Paris. I saw many on the subways of Paris. However, what you dont see is obesity there (atleast in smaller numbers) So french women do get fat, its just that their culture emphasizes eating healthier (for now anyways) I think French women shouldnt delude themselves into thinking they cant get fat, its a receipe for failure ecepsially as the McWorld culture starts to globalize. Neither should they be obessed about dieting like Americans are. But being aware of what youre putting into your body is essential in my opnion for your health.
ReplyThere are fat women everywhere! What's new?
