Diet Coke With Splenda: Bewildering Choices?
Another Diet Coke has just been introduced - "Diet Coke sweetened with SPLENDA Brand Sweetener". There are now seven different flavors of Diet Coke. They are:
- Diet Coke
- Caffeine Free Diet Coke
- Diet Coke with Lime
- Diet Coke with Lemon
- Diet Cherry Coke
- Diet Vanilla Coke
- Diet Coke with Splenda
The new Diet Coke with Splenda is actually sweetened with a combination of Splenda and acesulfame potassium (ace-k). Will this new flavor confuse things?
Imagine trying to order a particular Diet Coke... Will you need a degree in chemistry in order to select the appropriate formulation for your taste buds?
UPDATE April 06:Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda may be discontinued - see an up-to-date list of the various Coke formulas here.

what do you think is worse smoking or splenda. I'll be a compulsive diet pop drinker over a smoker. think about it.
Reply"what do you think is worse smoking or splenda."
That's a tough one. Both are habit-forming, both can be addictive, both are targeted towards youth, both can lead to chronic degenerative diseases, both taste better once you get used to them... but cigarettes show the health risks on the pack while Splenda doesn't. I guess smoking wins.
Reply"but cigarettes show the health risks on the pack while Splenda doesn't. I guess smoking wins."
Horrible point man. Smoking is much worse.

Thank you for your intelligent insights. As you know, one can only try.
ReplyWow! I have been reading about Splenda for and against. I think it all stinks. I lost ninty pounds on Atkins and felt so much better. I started out not using anything with aspartame but found most drinks(when eating out) came with it so started using it. I found I got major pains in my arms and legs. When I stopped and after about a week or so the pain went away. I don't get the same thing when I use Splenda.... Maybe everyones body is different and reacts differently to the chemicals we injest. We have no idea what chemicals we are injesting anyway with all the canned stuff we use. Half the stuff listed on the ingredience can is chemical and we can't understand it anyway. All the sights I have seen knocking splenda are sights you can't seem to email and they are usually selling their informtion about why it is so bad. If it is really any worse than anything else we consume why aren't they giving us this info for free to download. Seems to me everyone out there is just looking to make a buck for or against anything. My being obese is as bad as any chemicals I am taking in. We are all going to die of something so decide who you want to live and enjoy each day as we don't have a clue when it will be our last.
ReplyOpps should have proof read. It is how you want to live... and the ingredience listed on the can well anyway I think you can figure out what I mean. I just needed to say something cause I am so tired of someone always telling you something is bad for you.
ReplyBarbara, I'm on your camp. I haven't had personal negative experiences with Splenda, or read research that has convinced me it is bad.
ReplyJan, I made this all up. I am a complete dumbass and like to write pointless things on forums. INTERNET JUNKIES FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyShwam Shwams?
ReplyThat last non-sensical comment was not from me.
ReplyOr was it. Thats the question...
ReplyI used to be a non lable reader. I urge every one to read ingredient lists and look up definitions. If these products are poison remains to be learned.
ReplyThe FDA has ingredients in foods generally recognized as "safe". One of these ingredients is propylene glycol, aka car antifreeze. It acts as an emulsifier in many processed foods. Ever see a car with an engine that leaks oil into the coolant? It turns the coolant to milkshakelike consistency. So now will the world stop eating crackers, snack cakes, processed donuts, etc.? I'm guessing probably not, but hey, we can't be eating NUTRASWEET or SPLENDA! Those are poisons! But yeah, we'll just keep downing our antifreeze. Hey, it's good for you...keeps your blood from freezing up in the winter :P
ReplyWell - I'm not sure quite where to start after reading these comments - many of which amount to nothing but bullshit. Anyway -
I guess my main point is that you should make an educated decision.
If it's chemically altered people - it's harmful... period.
If you're dad's a doctor, he learned what they taught him in medical school. And I would venture to guess that most of you don't realize that medical school offers a mere 3 hours (on the average) of nutrition. I have docs in the family who verify this. We all know how nutrition information seems to vacillate from year to year. I have worked with doctors as well. They read whatever studies come out and take that as gospel. Never mind that each year seems to contradict the last.
If you want to digest this shit, then do so. But know that yes, it is chemically altered. It is harmful. Oh yes - but you stupid people - it would take a great deal to harm you. Let's see - starting with the chemicals that are in the lining of your children's cereal boxes - something that is banned in Europe, then the chemicals in your morning coffee sweetener along with whatever hormone and antibiotic you're eating with those eggs, combined with the chemicals that are sprayed on your veggies while you eat that healthy salad, and the chemicals and sugar in your store-bought salad dressing.... - oh my we're only at lunch.
I have to question the intelligence of one who makes such claims about the amount needed to affect us. We are now hearing reports of how our 10 year old girls are entering puberty due to the estrogen found in our food supply. Don't underestimate chemically altered/hormone added food.
You are far better off eating real sugar than these chemically altered substitutes.
ReplyEVERYTHING is chemically altered. EVERYTHING. Everything you eat, drink, breath, etc. etc. Just because it's not altered by humans doesn't mean it doesn't occur in nature in the exact same way. Don't be afraid of the word "chemical." It is not synonymous with "unhealthy." Before you start telling people to make an educated decision, get an education yourself. And, no, in medical school, you get an entire course in nutrition.
ReplyAnd Spectra has a good point - this isn't just about sweeteners - this is about processed foods. Yes - there can be "antifreeze" in your food.
But the existence of those chemicals in other foods should not be used as an argument to consider the anti-sweetener movement as invalid.
ReplyChristie--I was only making a point that yes, there are lots of chemicals in food, especially processed/preserved foods, but so many people fixate on certain additives, etc. You make a good point...there are only minute quantities of these additives in food and the human liver is very capable of digesting most of them. I think the thing we need to realize is that we should try to limit our consumption of these foods, but not worry about totally eliminating them from our diet as that would pretty much be impossible.
Replyok i am in highschool and even i know that most chemically altered substances are completely harmless. When, put in combination the chlorine they add to sugar to make it splenda, is completely harmless, just like it is completely harmless in salt. I really wish people would stop being stupid and just accept the fact that these are well designed substances that have been tested extensively and have been found to be very safe. If you think these substances are harmful and rational arguments won't persuade you to think otherwise, then shut the hell up and don't complain to other people who actually know what they are talking about, ie me. The process to produce splenda sounds bad, but the substance that is produced is very pure. The process is long and needs many chemicals just to insure that everything bonds right, and then becomes pure. What you ppl don't seem to understand that, just because these chemicals are added during the process doesn;t mean they end up in the final product. The only difference between splenda and sugar is the 3 chlorine in splenda instead of 3 hydroxyl radicals in sugar. The only purpose and effect of this switch is the fact that our bodies can not metabolize the resulting molecule, or sucralose(splenda). Have a good day, and stop whining about splenda. Plese don't post more uneducated rants that have no facts supporting them.
ReplyWhat many may not know is that the "sugar" you think is in regular soft drinks is in fact not sugar at all. Sugar's chemical name is sucrose. The sweetener in soft drinks is, and I quote, "high fructose corn syrup", not sucrose. Soft drinks would taste a whole lot different if they were really made with real sugar.
ReplyHello
I know that what I am about to say will most likely be met with cynicism and flames aplenty, but I will say it anyway.
I work for one of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies, a very respected and trusted one. I can tell you with all honesty that the studies that are done on most of the chemicals mentioned here are done very diligently and that the results obtained in these studies are reproduced hundreds of times to make sure that it is 100% correct.
Now, having said that... the truth about aspartame (for one) does not reach the general public, and the FDA is a BIG player in this. They are corrupt beyond comprehension and do what they do to make money, or at least to make sure the shareholders and powers that be make money. I can go into this in some depth, but this is not the place for it.
Virtually all of the chemically altered drinks (and that covers nearly the whole spectrum of fizzy drinks) does harm the health of 98% of people out there. That is fact. It does not stop me from drinking the occasional Sprite or Coke but it does make me limit the quantity severely.
I would like to think that if people knew what they are putting into their bodies that they would revolt and stop drinking (and eating) these toxins - but we all know that that is not the case. People just do not care, if it pleases them then it's a good thing, no matter what the truth might be. Self gratification is todays God.
Enough preaching.
Lastly, water is by far still the best natural metabolism enhancer, it aids the digestive system and rinses toxins from your body. Drink more of it.
Naturally there are problems even with water... fluoride and chlorine comes to mind, but the alternative is do drink nothing... not a very wise alternative indeed.
Over and out.
Replyit is true, all diet products are "bad" for you because of the chemicals. all of the artificial sweeteners start with a bang and then as more studies are done, it seems they end up with the same negative cancer causing image. my dad is diabetic and for as long as i can remeber we've been drinking diet soda and avoiding as much sugar as possible. recently i've become allergic to aspartame and i think sacchrin is just awful, so splenda is a good alternative to me. sugar is also processed with chemicals, so i think the only way to avoid these harmful chemicals would be to switch to like organic raw sugar. good luck with that. :O)
Replysoda pop, diet or regular, is really not good for us. those flavored waters don't have the fizz, but they do taste pretty good for anyone who doesn't like plain water.
Splenda is NOT cancer causing, however Aspartame is VERY dangerous and it's quite insane that is offered in so many products. It's amazing that aspartame was passed and put on the market at all. It's been linked to behavioral disorders in children and also autism...as well as cancer. Splenda is made from sugar...you do the math!
ReplyMy friends mum and dad saw this diet coke doc. on tv and now he is no allowed to drink coke or diet coke i feel i can not go one day with out some sort o vizzy drink.
Replymy mother and i have been reaserching about the chemicles they have in diet prducts and i am 15 and i konw i wont touch diet coke diet pepsi ect.The amount of chemicles they have in these products are scary such ass METHANL/FRMALDEHYDE i looked these two up in the dictinary and you should to. Their is aspartame DEFINETLY LOOK IT UP!!!!!
Replyi have recently decided to give up my coke drinks. since i like the carbonated taste and want to drink coke (a choice i make) i have switched to splenda versions.
Replyi sometimes get the bottled version and find that using small glasses controlls my intake.
i also buy the bottled water cases and refill them and put them in my refrig for a choice of cold drink. i find that having the choice often influences what my hand grabs. sometimes i also add splenda instant teas to the water but i most often drink the water alone.
it really is a choice.
when i watch cable tv progams about parts of the world where the only water to drink is from a dirty pond or river or a poorly dug or polluted well, i am grateful i have choices.
Becky, I don't know if you are still checking this site, but you asked for advice and I have some that might help.
I understand that men tend to be stubborn about things like this, but you should try and get your husband to drink more clear water. No sugars, no flavors, just water. I'm not saying he can't have his Diet Coke too, but a liter or two of water every day (perhaps between his morning coffee and lunch-time coke) will likely do wonders for him. I know my mother's arthritis is twice as bad if she doesn't drink at least two liters of water every day. She drinks almost as much DC as your husband (and she's a lot smaller than him) but she tries to remember to drink the water also.
Even drinks with little or no sugar are not digested and absorbed by the body the same as water so they don't hydrate the same way. Think about it, Gatorade made their fortunes off of this. Most drinks, including DC cannot be used as a total substitute for water. I'm not saying not to drink DC or even to drink less; just drink some water, too. I'll bet that even his doctor will agree it's a good idea.
ReplyGood call Allison. YOU might want to do YOUR research. While Splenda IS made from real sugar it is not altered in a "safe process." They remove 3 of Sugar's NATURAL Oxygen-Hydrogen bonds, and replace them with 3 molecules of CHLORINE! As in chlorine from your pool water! Would you drink a Coke that contained the chemicals you just added to your pool? I think not! And for those of you who are thinking that regular table salt has chlorine in it also, so it can't be harmful, think again! It is CHLORIDE in table salt; which is a naturally occurring element. CHLORINE has been chemically altered, and when ingested, is a carcinogen! You don't need to ingest hundreds of diet sodas to get the effects of Splenda and it's additives!
ReplyAnon.--you need to take a chemistry class. Chlorine is Cl2 diatomic gas that is toxic when inhaled. Whenever chlorine is combined with another element, the nomenclature changes because it's an ion. The chlorine in Splenda is indeed chloride because it's a single atom of chlorine in each hydroxyl group space. And the chlorine in your pool is also chloride because it has to be associated with another element in order to get out of its gaseous form. It's incredibly soluble in water because of it's strong negative charge.
ReplyBeer.
ReplyFYI, when it comes to side effects of anything, including sweeteners, it all varies by individuals. All these tests can only relate to the “general population”, Since I am an individual, my results may vary – as the saying goes. The truth is that these tests indicate that the stuff is OK for probably 99% of the people. That sure sounds good to me and I would not want to penalize the 99% for the 1%. I say this as a person who found out that I was having aspartame side effects (diarrhea, and lack of concentration). It all started 2 years ago when I wanted to loose weight and starting drinking diet colas. It took me about a year to slowly remove things from my diet until the problems went away…Diet pop, BINGO! I got to this web site reading up on Splenda. Here’s hoping! Better living through chemicals! Remember, what you eat today, walks and talks tommorrow.
ReplyEver think about the phenyls out there that have to avoid Nutrasweet/Aspartame with a 10 foot pole? If if werent for Splenda I would be 50+ pounds more overweight. Diet Coke with Splenda and other splenda products have saved me from a life of water w/no option.
ReplyIt may not work for you - but quit attacking the products that help people like the phenylketonurics of the world that see Sucralose/Splenda as the only alternative.
It's your choice to use products with Splenda or not. Think about those less fortunate. Think about those without a choice. Use you choices and leave us alone. Quit challenging the product makers that we love - there are more of you than us, and you actually have a choice.
Splenda sucks! Headaches. Aspartame does not do this to ME. Thats the key. If YOU don't like it...don't use it!
Replysucralose (Splenda) is basically the sugar molecule backwards with some twists and additional atoms. The body doesn't know how to process Splenda so it doesn't, the mystery is why does it not leave the body like it came and where are those delicious molecules going?
Replysugar: C6 H12 O6
sucralose: C12 H19 Cl3 O8
Oh yeah the 600 times sweeter thing spikes your metabolism which i hear is real nasty when your older. but as it has been said before:
"it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person." -Jesus (Matthew 15:11 ESV)
Replylynn.. Please consider that the first articles about a sweetener being harmful were directed at Aspertame and NutriSweet. Then a year later, articles started popping up about how Splenda had the same problems. It seems obvious that makers of Aspertame planted fake notes on the internet. This was then followed up by the book authors "Natural cures they don't want you to know about". It doesn't mean the writers of that book did actual testing. They are only quoting the false info on the net. That lead be to worry about Splenda, but at the same time I can't help but feel that the negative articles about Splenda are just a backlash from makers of Aspertame.
ReplyWere can I buy Diet Coke with Splenda or any soda wit6h Splenda? I do not like any of the other diet sodas but I do like Splenda in my ice tea. Please help
Replyregular and
Replydc is bad 4u
stick to plain old water
Just purchase and read the book "Sweet Deception" by: Dr. Joseph Mercola.
ReplyIt will explain ALL the dangers and just how POISIONOUS all the artificial sweeteners really are. He explains just how the FDA gets away with passing these sweeteners so they can get them out in the market. He also expalins who gets rich off the selling of the sweetners. You will be surprised!
I think the Diet Coke w/ Splenda is mostly sold to those on a low carb diet. Most low carb diets like Atkins don't allow aspertame. But they do allow Splenda. I know that's why I switched from regular DC to DC made with Splenda. Just a thought.
ReplyI drink DC like it's water and I put Splenda in everything so when this new product came out I was excited to try it. It definately has a lemon aftertaste, which isn't particularly unpleasant, but the regular DC still reigns supreme.
ReplyThat being said I'm pretty positive that Splenda is a lot better for people than Aspartame is. But, let's be honest people, no matter what we consume, an excess of anything has the potential to be harmful. Science is ever-changing so let's leave the DC to the DC lovers and everyone opposed can go drink some water ... or whatever.
